Bad update of the UX

It’s ok to add new ways to track but don’t disable the diary meal split you had before that was the best and clearest thing to entice me to log. You forced me to turn off all new features to maintain that view? Why?

It could be better

I am perplexed as to why the application fails to launch when experiencing a slow internet connection. This issue significantly contributes to the low rating. Therefore, I kindly request that the developer provide a comprehensive explanation for the necessity of this functionality.
I do not favor the new AI-first approach. Please allow me to use a hybrid approach that enables me to scan barcodes and add information the old way.
**Edit:** The app developer has published a response to one of the two questions, but it is incomplete and lacks sufficient detail. Consequently, I have downgraded my rating to one star due to their apparent lack of concern. Pirchasing a year-long subscription proved to be an unfortunate decision.

Great app, horrible popups

This app is great for tracking what’s in food, I have found so many healthier alternatives by checking the info on here! But unfortunately there’s a few things that ruin it for me. The popups asking me to go premium are SO annoying!! Especially when you don’t want or need any of them features, go away! Also, it sometimes resubmits data into the health app that other apps have already submitted, which is a pain when trying to manage stuff through health.

No intuitive, UX is poor

This is a pretty app but has horrible UX design and is not intuitive. You can’t update meals and there are many more issues with it. If they made improvements it would be great but for now, I don’t recommend it.

Good but don’t like the new changes

Always been a fan of this app and I pay for a premium subscription. I don’t like the changes they’ve made recently. It seems to have introduced extra steps to logging meals which means it’s not as quick and easy to do as it was before. Also, when opening the app the first time each day it will always show yesterdays data rather than today’s so if I don’t notice that and manually skip it forward to today then I end up mistakenly adding today’s data to yesterdays which I can go and delete but it’s a bit annoying. I’m sure I’ll get used to the changes but I don’t like them!

No need to rush AI

The App is fantastic I’ve used it everyday for the past 4 months and it’s been a great helping tracking my protein goals but the multimodal tracking is awful. Not intuitive or user friendly at all. This needs way more testing before exposing to the general public, when turned on it makes me not want to track anything.
I get the push for AI innovation but maybe baby steps would be best.

I bought, before the update the premium subscription, now I really want to have back the old version of Lifesum .
Is there any chance I can have the old version?
Mahiky_d
Version 20.1.0
2025-01-10

Please return the old version of it!!!!!

Honestly, I am completely lost with all the changes. The app has become not a very user friendly one… The way it selects breakfast/lunch/dinner is not normal. What if I want to track everything at once in the evening? I’ll get it all in dinner…. I also don’t like the new way if I want to search by name of the food.
Why do you call Quick Add when it’s not quick at all - I want to at least finally select multiple food options and I cannot! It only allows to select by one option only. Then I have to go back and add more… omg I cannot afford spending that much time on this! Nobody will like that. Counting calories is already stressful enough. I cannot believe that you have made this app so complex and absolutely not user friendly!
Please please please return the previous version…. I’ve been with Lifesum Premium since 2018 and I don’t think I want to continue using it… just complicates my complicated and busy day even more … things should be made simple so people can stick to it…
For now, I’ll be using another app. Shame…

Great app

I’ve used Lifesum for years. It’s keeping me on track and helped me to lose 4 stone by tracking my food using the bar codes and manually adding meals I’ve prepared. It’s also useful to track my daily protein and carbohydrate intake. I highly recommend using the app.

Why change such a good app

Have had Lifesum for as long as I can recall. There was a recent update and it is terrible. It has made it very complicated unless you are where you can scan barcodes. It is no longer intuitive and I can’t help but wonder if they have list businesses to another app and decided to copy some of their processes. I’ll keep giving it a try over the next few days but it’s time consuming and feels as though it has regressed not progressed.

There needs to be a hybrid between the old app and the new

I’ve used Lifesum since 2018, loved the app never had an issue with it. Recently the app has updated with the new AI features and while I have gotten used to the new update and from time to time will revert back to the old diary I feel there needs to be some sort of hybrid between the old version and the new version where you can still search for certain food items without having to Type it in as it often gets it wrong with the text feature. I put the grams of a well known supermarket soup and it got it completely wrong. It often gets things wrong on the text feature. If you brought back the search feature within the new version it would be much better.

Do not use

Unfortunately Lifesum have really sold out. They have made it nearly impossible to get in touch with customer support - with a AI support process that refuses to let you speak to a human.
Multimodal tracking is also ridiculous - it’s a food tracking app, we don’t need AI. A structured interface is fine.

I hated new UI

I can’t add more than one item from recents. Item Icons are wrong and confusing. Breakfast and lunch sections are removed. I don’t know why. I used to select recent breakfast item, recent lunch items sepetately. Now, they are all together and it’s really hard to find (again, you can’t select multiple of them)
I mentioned rice to the AI. It added 100 gr. I’m saying increase it. It says “i can’t do that”
You totally wrecked this app

Pay for everything

Spent over an hour setting up and working out how to use the app, only to realise that this new Multimodal entry system only exists for premium users. Nowhere did it say it is premium only except hidden away in a webpage out of the app! Without this entry functionality, this app is hardly usable and almost EVERYTHING is locked behind a paywall. This app is therefore useless because you can’t even try the premium features to see if they work.

Improvements are terrible

The new improved version is most annoying. It takes far longer to track meals because nothing can be easily found. The old version allowed tracking by weight and was good for people who cook their own meals to track. I dislike this so-called smart version intensely and will be cancelling premium in favour of MyFitnessPal which is easier to use.

Ruined by AI!!

I have been using this app for the past 3 years and have found it to be very user friendly and effective for supporting weight loss.
Since the unannounced update earlier this week, it now takes twice as long to track everything, you can’t pre-track your meals effectively and when you try and use the image search function it tells you that something has gone wrong! No kidding!!
Please give users back the option to use the previous version, which was effective, simple to use and bug free.
Unless you’ve used the previous version, it’s hard to comprehend just how much the developers have ruined this app! Please sort it out!!

Best up until the recent update! 😟

The app has been fantastic for such a long time with a couple of minuses such as fixed amount of meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack)
This has been fixed now with apparently a big downside.
Adding meals became much more complicated!
You can’t just go and type manually the produce you want such as banana, or a Lidl protein quark (no barcode scanning in this case) you have to describe the meal in natural language which clearly gets translated with some ML models into the list of products which in my opinion is a big minus. Previously I was able to type anything and see the list of most accurate and probable matches. This functionality is gone now.
The ML functionality is alright but please bring the option of adding products the traditional way 🙏 until then I’ll cancel my subscription

Last update is a complete nightmare

I don’t understand what was the product vision for this update - make my life miserable? I’m a longtime user of Lifesum, I loved the search option when I didn’t have a barcode available. Now it simply does not work, I can’t edit the AI generated wrong entry, can’t find anything. I’m afraid if they don’t fix this soon, Lifesum and I will part ways.

New Release

With this new release the app has become useless. The companies are working to make their app better but this one makes it worse. You have to add food one by one compare to multiple at once with previous version, for instance. It is unusable for me unless it is fixed with a new release. BAD update!!! Hope it gets fixed.

Really bad Update

They have ruined this app with the last update. I’ve been a premium member for like 5 or so years. Cancelling today this is a really bad direction and the last straw with the app. Making it difficult to track your food now. They are trying to hard to integrate AI into the app.

New updates

I really enjoyed the old version of Lifesum, I found it easy to document my meals and enjoyed how it was set up into meals and I could add in foods where I wanted. Now I am very frustrated as there is no way to individually document into meals, or choose how something is tracked. Very disappointed and will likely unsubscribe as it does not fit my needs in a meal tracker.

Update made it worse

With this new update a few major usability issues have been introduced. 1. You cannot see anymore if your meal (lunch, breakfast etc) is balanced or not (proteins, fat and carbs)..you can only see the daily progress bar and that is not helpful when trying to build a meal. 2. When entering manually the ingredients or food from the recent tab (which is BTW few extra clicks than it used to be)..you cannot even multi select to then manually adjust the portion sizes..I have to enter each single thing one by one..this is too many clicks and definitely a step backwards from before the update where multi select was possible. Being a premium user it's sad to see that the UI has been poorly designed and important features have been made harder to access. I will now test competiros app as I'm not intending to spend 5 mins for each meal for precision tracking

I wished it was better

It a nice looking app, compare to other food trackers, it has versatility with dietary options. The thing that bothers me is that if you don’t hit the target macros per meal you get an unbalanced medium face. Some of the recipes that they have as healthy recommendation don’t give a happy face, because doesn’t hit the protein needed for that meal. For the life style that I have I can’t eat all the recommended protein for breakfast. Instead I have it for the other meals. I wish it wasn’t score by meals, it was only score by the day.

Frustrating, but fixable

I had high hopes for this app, but unfortunately it is just too frustrating.
It is extremely annoying that the controls are really badly designed so sometimes when you’re trying to select your unit for your serving (such as grams versus tablespoons) when you try to get the pop-up window to retract, it can close the entire food item window, meaning that you have to start over with entering the details for the food. Relatedly, and even more annoyingly, the arrow to proceed to the next screen when entering a recipe is at the edge of the window, and it is tiny, so if you even slightly misclick and touch outside the edge of the data entry window, it will discard the entire recipe and you have to start all over. If you do a lot of home, cooking and have to make a lot of your own recipes in the app, this is such a deeply, annoying and time wasting feature that could easily be addressed with a better design. For example, the app could ask whether you are sure you want to discard the recipe before actually just throwing out all of the work that you have done, and the arrow to move to the next screen could be larger and further away from the edge of the pop-up window.
It is also very annoying that some foods only have one unit and that the app cannot automatically manage conversions. For example, the rapeseed oil that I use only has fluid ounces as the unit. There are no tablespoons, grams, etc. So, what should be very easy for an app to manage using a simple calculation formula is something that I have to google over and over again to get the conversion. The app should automatically convert between different standard kinds of units.
The app can also be extremely demoralising. Most people fluctuate in weight by around five pounds, but no matter how well you are doing at limiting your calorie intake and hitting your macros and exercise goals, the app will say things like ‘it’s time to get motivated’ if you gain weight. To be working so hard to get a message suggesting that weight fluctuation is down to a failure of my personal motivation is nasty and insulting.
It also resets ‘today’ at midnight so no matter what your schedule actually is, if you eat any food after midnight it goes into the next day’s entry and it is difficult to override this. I asked support for help with and they just kept asking me for screenshots of the problem—never actually resolved. Second, a lot of the barcodes are linked to the wrong items or have incorrect nutritional information on the label. This is especially frustrating if you cook a lot of different meals at home and spend a significant amount of time correcting information for individual ingredients. Finally, I was ill for a while and stopped using the app while ill. When I came back to the app, all of the nearly 6 months as the daily meal entries I had made were gone! This meant not only did I not have the record I had spent hours and hours entering, but also it was no longer predicting any of the items in a meal based on previous patterns of consumption, which was the only thing that was making data entry a bit quicker and more efficient as I continued to use the app. If you really enjoy wasting hours and hours of your time, this app might be a good choice. Otherwise, probably not…
Update: many of the issues I raised above have not been addressed. On top of that, in the latest update, the screen for entering a new recipe now doesn’t fit within the typable area, so it’s even harder to enter recipes now. Unreal that this app has so many stars!

Great App I would highly recommend

This is probably one of the best apps I’ve used. It’s very easy to use and has loads of benefits like recipes and tracking body measurements. It helps you balance your meals to live a healthy lifestyle. It also has some great food plans like keto or 3 week weight loss boost. The only thing I wish it had as an extra option after paying the yearly subscription was a fasting timer that helped you with an alarm that said when was the best times to eat when fasting.

Disappointed again

I try this app every couple of years as I always think: surely this must be good by now.
Unfortunately managing recipes in this app is borderline impossible. No way to import recipes from external sources, no way to duplicate and edit, no way to categorise your own recipes or even distinguish them from the saved ones.
Additionally, despite choosing the vegan dietary restriction, the very first recipe I clicked on had eggs in it. And that was from an official Lifesum recipe.
Anyway, disappointed again. Writing a review for the first time so hopefully I don’t waste another £15 again in two years.

This app has made me think about what I eat and how much hidden sugar there is in most products, it’s helped me lose weight and still is, in a controlled manner and I don’t feel I’m missing out on anything.
In fact I used it to successfully create 3 burgers in buns with pickles etc good size burgers and squash fries that as a total came in at less than 800 calories. Boom. Result.

I like the service so far only been using a few days as of typing this
It is very irritating that nearly all the features are under paywall and every time you click on something ether an advert or the pop up to pay the subscription comes up I get needing money but make it less annoying

No longer using due to ads

I had previously used this app and even had a 1 year subscription. It helped me on my journey but now I use it occasionally so there is no need to pay. The new ads are too intrusive and make the UI/experience unbearable and too slow. Have them at the bottom of the page at least… I will no longer use the app.

Definitely helps

I’ve tracked calories manually in the past and lost a lot of weight, but it is a tedious task.
This app makes it a lot easier. The ability to scan a bar code is very handy when it’s an option.
I’d be very tempted to buy the annual subscription, but they only offer 50% off deals. I’d rather have a week free to see what the benefits are, as they’re all hidden. I won’t buy what I can’t see, hence the reason for the 4-star review. Short-sighted in my opinion.

The ads killed it

This is my first review on AppStore —I've been a loyal Lifesum user for years, and it has significantly helped me achieve my weight loss goals. I even subscribed to the app while on my journey. Even after reaching my goal, I continued to use Lifesum to track my daily intake. However, the recent update has drastically diminished the experience due to the introduction of intrusive ads that disrupt the core purpose of the app: tracking.
While I understand the need for ad revenue to keep the app free, it feels like there's little value being offered to free users in return. Here's a suggestion to improve this experience while still generating revenue:
Consider adding a dedicated "Ad" tab where users can choose to watch five ads in exchange for five credits. Once they accumulate 20 credits, they can redeem them for one week of premium subscription. This way, users have the option to earn their subscription through engagement, and you still generate revenue from ads without compromising the user experience.

Love it!!

Tracking what you eat is incredibly hard. Tracking what you eat using Lifesum is ALMOST easy - it still takes dedication, which is not the app’s fault. I love that you can instantly scan any food barcode and the app knows exactly what’s inside - calories, carbs, protein and fat - and it adds them to your day meters, so you always roughly know how much more or less you need to be eating for the rest of the day. It’s simple, pretty beautifully designed, and best of all it provides the basic functions you need to diet for free. I don’t mind the small ads they’ve added, since I get a good app for $0 and they need funding to provide their service to me. These guys have done a brilliant job, I wish I had the time and devotion to justify premium. Thanks devs! :)

Why do I need to pay for Macros and Calorie adjustments in a calorie tracker?

I understand that there are certain features like recipes, life scores, etc. that some may choose to pay extra for.
HOWEVER, why do I need to pay nearly £100 pounds a year just to be able to change my macro preferences and calorie intake goal? Both of which are also ridiculously low for me and do not make any sense.
It is expected for some more advanced features to be available with premium but this is such a basic thing for a calorie tracker. And the fact that I need to pay to at least be able to use it as a calorie tracker for my goals, makes it lose its whole point and purpose. If it is a calorie tracker than make macro changes and calorie intake changes available for free. The values it provides for the target calorie intake are also extremely low so please consider changing it according to activity levels, etc.

Love love love

Absolutely love this are used to use MyFitnessPal to track my ear however I found it wasn’t aesthetically nice and I didn’t feel motivated to use the app. I suffer with our arfid disorder. However this encourages me to maintain my weight have such a fun time navigating my health condition such a lovely app to use has a huge inventory. I’ve only had to add one food item using it since I’ve been using it for awhile. There is probably a few little things I would change about it i.e. document and food there should be a clear breakdown downloads of tabs, as I mentioned these are tiny little things just to make it even better thank you

In desperate need of a reality check!!

I’ve had this app for a while now and only recently decided to get the premium. One issue I’ve found so far with most of these apps is how frustrating it is to track when you cook for yourself every day. I wanted a feature where I could meal plan for the week in advance so I could see how many calories my recipes are and then decide whether I wanted to do them or not. STILL after purchasing premium, it is an absolute nightmare. I can’t delete old recipes so mistake ones just linger about. I can’t edit recipes so if I think to myself hmmm maybe I should swap the heavy cream for yogurt this time so I can eat more of the food I love (as yogurt is not so calorie dense), I can’t!!! Or I have to input the 20 or so ingredients all over again (maybe even a copy past function for ingredients would be handy). When I can’t see exactly how many calories my meal is going to be, its really frustrating, especially when it takes so long to track the recipes in the first place. Plus there is a meal planning function for Lifesum’s own recipes, but not mine!!!! Realistically, people cook their own recipes more than not. They’re not going to be doing a Lifesum recipe every day of the week (heck, I don’t even need to do one) - its too much of a learning curve when their own recipes could be healthy enough.

Don’t bother

This app is great if you don’t care about accurately tracking what you’re eating. Every single food item will have something wrong on the nutritional information, most commonly is the sodium content which people put the salt content (they aren’t the same thing). Lifesum then “Verifies” these items which means it’s impossible to amend the wrong info.
Even when you can amend the info you have to do it every single time you scan the item as it doesn’t remember the correct values. The only way around this is to send screenshots of this to support who take a week to reply saying they’ll update it.
Additionally the recipes/meal plans are incredibly limited and are rarely ever updated.
Having been a premium subscriber for the best part of 3 years I won’t be bothering again.
The developer response to this is utter rubbish. These issues have existed for years and been reported for years and they do nothing to fix them. Saying report the items to support does nothing because they a) leave the incorrect item up b) take days to respond and c) they create a new item which you can never find.
They need to address the fundamental issues with this app rather than just copy & pasting the same response to reviews.

Almost perfect

I like this app. A lot. It does what I need in terms of tracking meals and exercise, and the UI is easy-ish to learn and quite elegant. However, there are a couple of wrinkles, which is why it gets four stars from me.
The recipes are really tasty, and I love that I can add ingredients to the integrated shopping list. But, the quantities are sometimes in metric and sometimes in cups, which means very little to the average European. While I can do conversions into grams using the Internet, it adds a lot of time to cooking and complicates shopping choices. Also, an easy way of removing duplicates from the shopping list would be great, as many recipes use the same ingredients.
Secondly, when I’m tracking a meal, the daily totals don’t refresh automatically. As a workaround, I found changing the day then back again does the trick, but it would be better if it was automatic.
That being said, it’s a nice package and I’m using it daily. So far, the weight loss has been impressive, without feeling hungry. In fact, I reckon I’m eating more than ever!

Horrendous User Experience

First of all this app is good at what it does, provides tracking, connects to Apple Health and a whole multitude of features that make it very helpful. Also, the recipe and diet suggestions are really good too, it can really help you pursue new goals especially if you don’t have any ideas of how you are supposed to be eating. Based on what I’ve said I’d rate this app five stars.
However, the user experience is horrendous. I find the user interface to be tricky to navigate, buggy and annoying. If you scan a barcode and it brings up the incorrect item it’s such a pain to sort out. Last year they updated the app with a brand new look and I thought they’d finally fixed it. Nope, same crap interface with new looks. Please can they hire or consult someone to fix this experience. If you’re consuming less calories and a little hangry you can very little patience for this app.

Beautiful design, great functionality

Having been a Lifesum premium subscriber since 2014, I can say it’s 100% worth it. The new design is extremely aesthetic and the functionality offered by the app is the best in the market. I like being able to save food to a favourites list, create custom items/meals, save recipes in the app, track weight and body measurements and track categories like water, seafood, fruit and veg.
The tracking is simple to use, giving a clear visual overview which is encouraging for keeping up with progress. I love being able to select a style of eating which reflects my goals (balanced eating for me, although there’s paleo, low carb, Mediterranean, high protein and more), and the feedback is tailored to that. I also like that I can edit my calorie needs and macro split.
By far the best calorie/macro tracking app I have seen, and definitely the most beautifully designed. It’s pleasing to use and there’s also IOS widgets so I can keep my daily tracking in sight without having to open the app.

Best app ever

I started following this app 3months ago I don’t pay for full membership, I just use the free app , it’s been a life changer for me , I have become obsessed with my walking and eating a healthier food regime , I have always been a big meat eater , I am virtually a vegetarian apart from eating more fish than I have ever eaten , all processed food are now history , my weight is dropping steadily, my Doctor is amazed I was pre diabetic last year I am now completely the opposite, I am considering going into full membership as the results are better than I could ever imagined, I can’t emphasise how good I feel , try for yourself you won’t be disappointed

Have used for years but easy fixes still unimplemented

Life Sum is a decent app. It’s edge for me at least is that it supports UK products a lot better than much of the competition. However I have had the same bug for almost 18 months now and despite reporting it, it is still unaddressed.
When on a daily view, once the (useless) day rating card appears you are no longer able to scroll down. This means often I literally can’t log my dinner.
twice I have reported this, gone through the support route and twice they have just stopped relying to me. I even showed a video last time.
I had paid a year subscription previously but that has lapsed. I won’t be paying again until this is fixed. The recipes and stuff are pointless fluff, the app is a calorie tracker. The only thing I am lacking as a non premium customer is custom meals. I am happy to lay even for just that as I appreciate devs need to be paid but please for the love of god fix this bug!
SIMPLE FIX: Put a cross on these cards to dismiss. Even better have the option to turn them off entirely. They serve no purpose and break the app.

Very good app!

I love this app, it’s very easy to use, you can have control of what do you eat everyday and you can even scan the barcode of food and it put it straight in the app, which I found amazing. I paid 3 months for 9.99 pounds and I think it really worth it.
There are so many diets, and focused in different targets. Even my boyfriend love the recipes, they are very tasty. I have used it for a month and I think is one of the best apps I have used for healthy meals and healthy lifestyle. I recommend it 100%.
Also, you can filter recipes with dinner, lunch, calories, etc. Which I think it’s very useful.

Almost perfect

I use the app on a free basis and really impressed with what’s on offer. It’s helped me make healthy choices and steers me away from the cupboard because I feel embarrassed logging what I’ve just snacked on 🙈 I’ve had some time away from the app and have slipped back into an unhealthy lifestyle so I’m back on it and hoping to make some drastic changes.
A couple of issues for me. The calories I’ve lost aren’t correct and worth the developers looking to see if there’s a glitch. I’d lost 3lbs in the first week and it recorded that only 2lbs were lost. It’s actually deflating because I’d worked so hard and I wanted to see that number on the screen. It instantly put me off keeping to the plan as bizarre as that seems but I’m definitely driven by the amount of calories lost.
Also I’ve been breastfeeding and can’t see that there’s an option to put this into your profile. I would like to see this on the app to help other ladies who are breastfeeding make the right choices but get enough nutrition for their babies.
apart from that, it is a great free app.

Awesome, but last update was a let down.

Hi Guys,
Love the app, have been using it for more than a year and being a subscriber it helped me to stick to my diet.
Guys, the last update however I believe made a bit less usable and also I think, I’m really not sure, it’s affecting my battery life.
After an update a colour of the overall meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) which corresponds to overall rating of your meal is now gone from the dashboard. You have to go in there to check the rating, which is annoying.
On battery side:
I had it on my Apple Watch 6, and recently I noticed that I couldn’t get through the day without watch annoying me that it’s running out of juice, whilst before it lasted 1.5 days easily. I started looking for the apps I don’t use on the watch and the only one was Lifesum, so I deleted and voila. My battery in the watch is back to normal.
Same thing in the phone, only I use it every day in the phone, so deleting is not an option. Please look into this.

Good…. but

I downloaded this app and at first it looked good, recipes, diet plans etc. it wasn’t until I’d entered all the info for a diet plan and clicked on ‘start plan’, that a pop up for ‘start premium’ appeared. It would’ve be nice to have been told at the start I would need the premium subscription to be able to have a diet plan. Same with recipes, I clicked on a recipe and there was the pop up again. I currently use MyFitnessPal, where exercise programs and recipes are included without having to subscribe to the premium version and it’s made clear before you attempt to do anything, that you will need the premium subscription to do it. I don’t mind paying for something, what annoyed me was that it wasn’t made clear beforehand. I’m afraid I will be deleting it and going back to MyFitnessPal which has helped me lose around 20lbs.

Great but could add more features

I have used the app for a while and really like it but I think it would be nice to be able to create your own meal plan. Currently the only way to have a meal plan set up is based on the apps recommendations but I cannot add meals/recipes that I have created. It’d be nice to be able to have more options and choices there
Other than that it’s a great app. I have a premium subscription and i love that i can see all the macro information and track water, veggie and fruit intake. Also links with most apps or devices to track fitness measurements. A small detail but one that i like a lot is the design and how cute it is. When you reach your veggie or fruit intake a little Brokkoli or something starts to dance haha

Problematic

I think it’s probably great if you’re doing ‘clean eating’ or paleo, but it’s not so good for just dieting, even though it purports to be.
It rates foods, according to nutrients, and gives you a smiley or frowny face. If you select Mediterranean diet, you get bad ratings for olive oil, and pasta (hilariously, I got a frowny face for nice unsaturated fat olive oil, and told to eat more unsaturated fat for the same meal). On normal dieting, foods like wholemeal pitta breads get frowny faces because they are ‘processed’, but that’s the only thing in the con column of the rating, and there’s three positives in the pro column.
Fruit often gets a bad rating for being high in natural sugar, despite the fact that health professionals recommend fruit.
All the app recipes are faddy or ‘clean’ or paleo focussed - low carb, or using only coconut oils and fats instead of other healthy oils like EVOO or rapeseed.
I feel like this app is potentially triggering for people with tendencies towards something like orthorexia.
Edit: the developer has responded, but it is not relevant as I’m not referring to the meal ratings but the food ratings, and they haven’t addressed how these are clearly aimed at particular types of dieting, and you can’t turn them off (you can turn off meal rating).

Monthly subscriptions

I love this app so much. I’ve used it on an off for awhile now. I’ve tried slimming world and Weight Watchers but I still come back to using this app instead. The only reason that I haven’t set it as a full five stars, is that I just wish there was a more accessible way to pay for premium. Not everyone can afford the full 12 months in one go. I certainly cannot afford that. When you click on premium it advertises as a price per month and a price per year but there is no way to select a monthly payment. Three or £4 a month is easily accessible for me and I’m sure for a lot of other people, however I can’t afford to pay £33 in one go, would be absolutely amazing if you could think of your customers who maybe struggle with money a little bit and offer is a way that we can also have premium by offering a monthly payment choice

Enjoying more than MFP

This app is great because it’s much more aesthetically pleasing than MFP so it makes you actually want to use it. The barcode scanner isn’t quite as responsive though. Also the search options are not as comprehensive I.e. if I searched for a specific prepepared salad from a well known shop it’s less likely to appear in LifeSum than MFP, but you can just use the barcode so it doesn’t really matter. I’ve lost just under 1kg in my first week (although I can’t give the app all the credit for that!) This app make things a lot easier & more appealing, I’d highly recommend the free version and would be open to upgrading at some point.

Better apps out there

I recently purchased this app and thought I’d give it a go based on reviews. Firstly, I wouldn’t recommend installing or paying £7.99 for this app. When putting food in from previous days in automatically puts it on the date that you’re on. Trying to find the food is really difficult! They don’t have hardly anything on the app unless I scan the barcode for it then to come up with just 1 calorie and I know that’s wrong because custard definitely isn’t 1 calorie. I’m finding it very frustrating to use and the data definitely seems incorrect to me! I’ve giving up using it. If I had a review like this before purchasing then I wouldn’t have brought this app so want to inform others before they waste their time. Definitely better apps out there!!
Don’t get me started on the meal plan, if you have time to spend 3 hours making a tiny portions of god knows what, then be my guest but the recipes are fair to complicated and most of the recipes repeat throughout the different programmes. Really not helpful for someone who wants to clean eat, you’ll end up spending hundreds a month on a food shop.

A bit odd

I really like this app but it does confuse me a bit. For example it keeps asking me to weigh myself every day, which seems a great way to give someone an eating disorder.
But, also, it gives me a “target” of calories that I should eat every day, but adds to that target if I add in even a tiny bit of exercise. For example, I work as a cleaner (four hours a day) and cycle about 45 mins a day. It adds over 1000 calories for that. Now that’s just normal life. I thought the adult recommended calorie intake was based on a person who moved a bit. Also, people burn calories all the time, even when sleeping, so to categorise exercise calories as “calories burned “ as if they are the only calories you burn is misleading.

Great App for tracking your calories!

Lifesum is a great app for tracking your calories and I definitely recommend it. It has a great user interface, everything is clean and really presentable.
The only downside is when you’re using it on two devices. The sync is a bit lazy and doesn’t happen immediately even after refresh, I think it happens in the background once it’s opened on the second device but it can take a while. So be weary if you’re using it on two devices to track.
Also a few bugs where searching for food can sometimes display nothing or it logs it to the wrong meal (for example I tried to log a snack and it logged it to my lunch instead). But I’m sure this would get fixed in an update.

Great app

This is a great app for tracking calories, while also helping you to make better and more well rounded meal choices showing you how many grams of carbs, fat and protein you need per meal. It gives a calorie goal for each meal as well as optional fruit, water and vegetable counters that are customisable. You can also change the percentage of carbs/fat/protein to make it more customisable to your preferences. It also comes with pre made diet plans along with recipes so you can try different diets to find one that works for you. I started calorie counting using myfitnesspal app but prefer the ease and layout of this app more. This app is also more pleasing to look at.

Great app, but could be even better

I wanted an app that would help me to increase my protein intake and allow me to break down my favourite meals into sensible food choices and this app is great for making you more aware what you are eating and putting into your body.
The one significant improvement I would love to see with this app that would make it even better would be not only the ability to free custom log your calories, but the ability to free custom log your fat, protein and calories from other recipes outside the Lifesum app as the recipes are quite limited and there is only so many times you can make these over and over again.
Allowing for the custom logging of recipes outside the app will allow for greater freedom for the user to track more meals thus using the app more efficiently. Yes you can log your recipes and add these to the Lifesum database, however the nutritional values are not always correct when you do it this way, and makes the recipe nutritional information added incorrect.
An improvement like this for the app would make me then rate 5 stars, but at the moment I cannot rate 5 stars, as I just feel it is missing something to take it from great to awesome!
I hope this feedback is appreciated, and look forward to future updates with this app and seeing what the developers can come up with going forward.
Kind Regards,
Chloë

I love it, but needs improvements

I basically got addicted to the app, I use the free version for now and it literally made me more consistent I drink water and work out and I can see which food is good/ bad and now I have an idea of how many calories the daily products I use have so I quit some of them. But I find it strange, somehow I noticed the calories are changing all of the sudden in some crazy numbers, first it shows my intake over ex. If I have 90 kcal and then it jumps to 600 kcal left (for a snack). At first I thought I’m imagining things but now that I pay attention it happens every day. Please do something about it cause I’m planning to purchase the premium but like this is tricking me to eat more and being a beginner I still don’t know how much I have to eat. I also find it strange that it doesn’t sync with the step counter so I just have to insert everything manually which takes a lot of my time. I downloaded Argus and i can say it really has a lot to offer, many options and possibilities but I found it difficult to put food in so I gave up, otherwise Its way better, if you could do some improvements following their example we will all be happy. Thanks again for helping me get back on track! I will give you 5stars and purchase the meal plan✨I love you guys ❤️

Terrible customer service.

Although the app itself could be great and looks great. I have felt cheated by the company and customer service. Very quick to make money out of a bad situation. In September 2019, my google phone broke and I had it replaced with an Apple. I had forgotten I had this app and was unaware the subscription would still run with google, as I hadn’t received any emails, hence not having a google email set up on new phone. When logging on to a google account on my laptop I noticed 3 payments I hadn’t authorised. I contacted google and google said it was down to this company. I explained my situation to google and they said to contact Lifesum, explain what has happened and they will hopefully refund as a good will, due to me not having had access to this app. The customer service agent over looked my emails, ignored what I had asked them to look into, would not accept it as a complaint and passed it back to being Google’s responsibility. No offer of any refund or even an offer to use the app for free to make up for loss of service. Thank you Lifesum for your help 😊

Constant begging for upgrade

Before you even try the app they push premium. You try for the first time - “hey, would you like to some insight?” - “Sure” I say - “great, upgrade to premium here”. Or “we recommend this for you - click here to find out more” - “great, this will be interesting” - “you know the drill by now, sign up for premium”. Beautiful app - useful - a lot of duplication of the same thing - typing in black coffee gets a page full of results - hardly any of which is actually black coffee!! Poor first impression compared to myfitnessspal but I can see that with a bit of regular use you can overcome many of the issues. I would even consider subscribing if it was more naturally promoted. Not now. The only reason that I didn’t delete the app is that a friend highly recommended it.

Pretty satisfied

It was actually a lot a better than I expected it to be
Good for someone looking for just a simple app to help track meals when you can’t be bothered to do it on your own. Has a set goal for you each day.
Without the paid premium, it helps you easily track your calories, proteins and fat and gives you ratings on your types of meals with little smiley faces.
Also reminds you to drink water and gives you little glasses to click on and fill which -surprisingly- actually motivates me to drink more and fill them all up just for the satisfaction. Same with the protein, fat and calorie bars. I like seeing the bars full, good for motivation.
Very easy to type in and search for all the foods you had for your meals and gives you their ratings as well.
Aesthetically pleasing and easy to use and get around. Also gets straight to the point and tells you where you’re lacking.
Takes into account what your goal is and in how much time you want to achieve it.
I don’t have premium, but it still has a good amount to offer. Could add more recommended recipes for people who don’t use premium though.

Great app

I really like this app I’ve been using it on and off for a few years now and I’ve just really got into using it consistently. It’s very informative of nutritional information and I love how easy it is to find products with the barcode function. It links with my Apple Watch so I can easily keep track of my progress throughout the day and also tracks my activity. You can set weight goals for yourself and log your progress as well as body measurements, the app isn’t limited to only weight losing goals as it can also guide you with gaining and maintaining your weight. The only real downside I feel is that I have paid for premium and the plans have very limited recipes. I am allergic to nuts which is taken into consideration on the recipes page but not in the plans. I think this would be better if the plans page had a wider range of recipes to cater for more people and also a wider range of recipes in general. Other than that I haven’t noticed any issues so overall very useful app.

Another useless app deleted

This app has no free trial. Why would anyone pay £7.99 per month before knowing if it’s any good? It asks you to sign up then asks questions regarding your goals etc which is fair enough but after wasting ten minutes giving them the information it offers pictures of recommend recipes. However, when you click on them it then requires payment. Like most healthy recipes given on apps and in magazines they consist of strange ingredients I’ve never seen or heard of. Also it asks you to scan barcodes. I can’t say I’ve ever seen meat from a butcher or fruit from a grocers with an individual barcode attached. Presumably then the app is mainly set up for ping meals and therefore not very healthy. In conclusion it’s a good concept but with poor execution and if I paid for this app I’m certain I wouldn’t use it and would waste my money.
Update: I have since been bombarded with emails to purchase the full app and had to unsubscribe and here is their reply to my original review which doesn’t really address anything and sounds like a right faff.
"Thank you very much for your feedback! You have different ways to track your food - one is the barcode scanner mentioned by you, another one to create your own food items, meals or recipes under FAvorites in the app and track from there or you can simply enter the food title and calories using the simple tracking functionality.

Almost perfect

Some way of logging supplements / vitamins, and synchronising with Flo would honestly make it the perfect app. Beautiful interface, fun little recipes, and would easily be five stars if it logged exercise and water as simply as everything else. I love the syncs from health and runkeeper but every time I open the app, my logged exercise disappears. Every time. And every day. It even wipes retroactively. I can input it as many times as I want, it either disappears immediately or the activity stays on there but doesn’t show the calories on my day. So when I try to keep track of my calorie burn over the course of a week, I can’t. Water tracking I’ve just given up on. App support led me to a dead end so I really hope it’s just a bug because it’s incredibly frustrating, especially as I’m paying for premium!

...

I started using this app nearly two weeks ago and it has been really helpful to track my food and I have already lost 5 pounds in one week alone and will most likely have lost more by the end of this week however, When opening the app today a pop up has began appearing advertising the “fit for fall” discount off of premium.
I do not have the money to subscribe to any new subscriptions currently and the features provided without the premium membership and useful enough. However, the “fit for fall” pop up even after I press the cross still continues to appear every 3 to 5 second making the app impossible to use. Has this happened to anyone else?

Absolutely love this app

As a younger male trying to watch my calories and track what I eat and drink I can find it quite hard because each food has different amounts and it can all be a bit much. But this app makes it incredibly easy to do so. In addition to this if you have an Apple Watch or Fitbit the app automatically tracks the calories burnt and steps done without and prior setup which makes it incredibly easy for you to calculate what you have burnt offThe premium version may be expensive but I would say it is so worth it!! The only improvement I would as for is that there is a different section for drinks rather than it all being listed under food.

Great in part

Been using for while now & over about 6/8 wks lost 6lb was doing great with lifestyle etc-🤗👍 would totally recommend ; until my injury , within 1.5 weeks of no exercise ( on total rest ) and painkillers that had to be taken with food at certain times - ( so couldn’t fast ) put 6lb back on in same amount of days as it took in weeks to lose ! 😥
some guidance through times of poorer health ( esp with fast diets , ie an option to change if ill & revert back when better that’s built in) would be much appreciated.
In test not once does it ask about health , exercise in relation to health and medication . Someone who has to eat to line stomach for meds needs help to plan & if can’t exercise needs help to keep risk of piling on pounds to minimum . Plus it’s depressing to be on total rest & ill , with no treats :/ so maybe encouragement tabs.

Lifesum

I really love this app as I can see in full blown technicolour just how those little extras add up and push your calorie intake higher. I also love the fact that you can choose which diet you want, which kind of lifestyle you have so if your vegan or vegetarian or just have to follow a healthy diet then there’s an option for you, it’s great! However the only thing I don’t like which is why I only gave four stars is the measurements used, I’m vegetarian so I have to eat seeds and nuts etc and I only literally use a teaspoon of seeds the app then tells me I’ve eaten the whole bag, so I’ve pushed my breakfast up by 500 calories just because I can’t find the right portion size. I will persevere with the app as I love it so much and find it really useful.

Really good app to track your meals for free!

Really good app to track tutor meals. I have subscribed to the premium versions that I unsubscribed the same day as it’s not really what I was hoping for! All meals are measured for 4 servings, clean eating options show receptors that contain meat, you can’t pick a meal by calorie content or at least sort them that way, your app also has receipts that look amazing but the list of ingredients is very long and there’s no way to extract the list if you plan your meals for few days in advance.
As I cancelled my subscription with in few hours I am hoping you can simply revoke my subscription and not charge me for something I will not be using.
If things change on your app I’m happy to revisit the idea of subscribing, however for now huge premium option is not for me.

The app is great but could be better.

I really like almost all of the features in this app and how well it synchronises with apple HealthKit. However a free trial would be great to see how well it works before buying a subscription.
Additionally the app is really good at scanning barcodes so it knows how many calories are in products consumed. This is great when tracking food consumption during breakfast / lunch / dinner. I would however, like to see the app be able to collect nutritional information from website recipes from popular cookery websites. I have a cookery app that can do this so surely LifeSum could do it too?
In addition to this I’m unsure how the app calculates how much food you should be eating. I got the app to help me maintain my weight but the app suggests I should be eating more than I do even though I feel full up.

A great App!! Just one thing to improve..

This is a great app that helps me with planning my meals ahead and eases my mind off thinking how healthy i am eating. However there is one thing that could be improved to make it the beet app out there. While on a diet that does not have meal plan, i have to choose favorite meals from recipes. Later when i make my meal plan i have to scroll through all of my liked recipes which takes quite abit of time. I would recommend to the developers of the app to sort the liked recipes into sections of liked “Breakfast “, “Lunch”, “Dinner”, and “Snack” so that when planning a snack for e.g. i don't have to scroll through the mixed liked list that contains every meal in it. I hope this review was clear.
Good luck in future developments!!

It works!!

This app is great. Like some others here I’ve used MyFitnessPal in the past which I also found good, but after hitting 40 three years ago, the weight steadily crept on & id resigned myself to middle age spread. I started with the classic dieting & it was immediately clear that in my normal day to day life I was eating too many calories. After a few weeks & with up & down progress I switched to the 5:2 with a subscription offer & straight away I was losing 1-2lbs a week. Since October I’ve lost 13lb, 18lb overall since using the app. I hit my goal weight just before Christmas, which was an amazing feeling! I’ve varied with the exercise I’ve done & actually most of it has been yoga, so it’s been great to see the weight drop off without having to find the time to go to the gym. The recipes are easy to make & inviting. Thank you Lifesum!!

Great way to change my eating habits

Have had this app for about three months and it has made me much more aware of my eating and exercising habits. I have been able to make gradual changes to improve my overall health such as increasing my protein consumption and water intake as well as encouraging me to take up different forms of exercise. I was not trying to lose weight but have lost 9lbs. It would be even better if mums could use it more effectively although I know it would be tricky. Such as accounting for extra calories used through breastfeeding (I currently tandem feed my 2year old and 4 month old) or through pushing and carrying as I often log “slow” walks but can’t take into account I am simultaneously pushing a large toddler and carrying a 14lb baby! Probably accounts for the weight loss 🤓

Genuinely helped me change my life

Like everyone I began the year with the feeling that I must get my physical health together so I downloaded Lifesum (after a painful failed attempt at jogging).
I began tracking my usual meals and to my horror discovered that my eating habits had gotten way out of hand. After a few weeks of using the app I started to feel mentally and physically better. Actually seeing explicitly what I ate everyday made me take responsibility for my health.
I was quite overweight for my height (200lbs) and managed to lose 50lbs in about four months just by paying attention to my diet and moving more. No fads, no ‘diets’ just not mindless eating.
I am massively grateful to this app for helping me to pay attention to my health and get my life together.
Would highly recommend.

Quite good

I found this app and it’s actually quite good, however most recipes and “going smarter” -to know more about what you’re eating - is part of the premium section. However, it is still quite good, with loads of food registered on the app, and you can scan a barcode of what you’re eating and most of the time it is on there. It also has a test to show if you’re healthy, balanced etc, and you can track your weight. You can also say how much water you drank, and you show the exercise that you did. That being said, when you have something like a macdonalds, you feel very annoyed looking at how many kcals you are over - for lunch. So, tracking your diet will either be really good, and I recommend this app and no other (yet), or really bad.

Great interface and easy to input foods

I find this much, much simpler to use than fitnesspal and i much prefer the aesthetics. The exercise list is limited but sufficient for me for the time being
What would be really helpful: as someone with health issues, it would be useful to have more information on nutritional intake eg iron, magnesium, iodine etc
It would be great to link it to my menstrual cycle app or if a menstrual cycle thing was added in to lifesum as it would allow me to develop a clearer view of how my diet affects my body and what my body needs more of. (I could also dispense with entering info into a separate menstrual cycle app - none of which seem to link nutrition and exercise to create a more holistic view of ones body)
Both these features i would be happy to pay for as it would be useful.

amazing but..

Honestly this app is great, and it’s the truth hands done one of the best.
but .. i mean, okay i get it , the developers need to make money off of it as well, but they keep shoving you tests ( that are technically super useful) and then to proceed to take a plan , and it’s really annoying for me particularly because as much as i love this app i can’t pay for a plan and is kinda useless , they don’t track alcohol / smoking .. i smoke a lot and often drink alcohol , especially on weekends ( and that plays a huge part for your health / metabolism ) , and there are some info that should just let be left for free or .. at least have an free plan in hopes the user achieves it and for the next plan, actually pay for it, why should i pay for something if i don’t know if it’s going to be beneficial to me ? ( and for this matter my body!)
the interface is nice i 100% love it , it’s somewhat okay to use but i got the hang of it really quickly the search option for food it’s pretty .. international to say so, it finds foods/snacks from all over the world and it’s amazing for that.
the whole app is great !

Great but not perfect

I’ve been comparing food tracking apps for a short while now and Lifesum definitely has the nicest interface. I appreciate the integration with HealthKit too, though I think a few other apps do that. I have a few things that could be implemented that I think would make lifesum even better.
Features that I would love Lifesum to have:
- The recommended target calorie ranges for each meal to be scaled to match your target. At present these remain set at the range for “maintain” eating, so if you plan your meals by these targets then you will overshoot your overall calorie goal.
- Auto detection of fruit and veg from your added foods. I’ve seen this feature in other calorie counting dietary apps and it’s handy to not have too many button presses.
- similarly it would be nice if food can be added first and then assigned to a meal secondly. At present there’s quite a few button presses to get your food added.
- I would LOVE it if meals were suggested for dinner that helped you meet your carb/protein/fat target without overshooting. Sometimes it’s quite difficult to pick the right combinations at the end of the day.
That’s all for now!
