Useful but there's still rooms for improvement
It is very useful but it would be mighty nice if the app can pronounce the words too.

I do come across words that aren't in this dictionary, but the majority are there and the verb conjugation is great

Fantastic
How did we ever manage without apps like this. I use this app for four languages and I have the whole language at my fingertips without having to carry a big dictionary around.
The verb conjugator is a particularly cool feature.

Don't Buy German Dictionary
Perhaps I don't know how to use the dictionary, but in German, knowing the gender of a noun is absolutely essential to everything else.
But, eg look up "haus" and it gives NO gender. The same for many other words.
How can Collins say they understand about languages when they miss out this fundamental information??
Apologies to Collins if I am not using the dictionary correctly, but I cannot see this gender information.
So don't buy this expensive, useless dictionary.

Good product, turned bad.
It saddens me to write badly about this dictionary. It was good, it׳s now nearly useless. No browsing. No fuzzy search. No wild card search. None of the features that used to be so good.
Please restore these immediately. Without them this product is useless.

Refuses to open on iPhone 5 and IPad
A very useful app until it started not opening. I paid a lot of money for this and am very cross - you wouldn't get this problem using a paper dictionary!

Fantastic Dictionary
For those unable to open the app due to it crashing, re-download and install it and the problem is solved. A really good app with all the features of a large paper dictionary at a fraction of the size and price.

Expensive but worth it
If you are serious about learning German this is a great investment. Works well on the iPad and iPhone. Much faster than a paper dictionary.
For those complaining about the crashes...yes it crashes too much. But just delete the app and reinstall. Takes 2 minutes.

Excellent reference, but .....
The changes a few months ago were a massive improvement and I find this app extremely useful. But in the last few weeks it has become very slow. Is this something to do with the iOS 7 update?

Great little app
The crash on launch problem can be easily resolved by deleting and then redownloading the app.
I've replaced my bulky paper dictionaries with Ultralingua apps. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

The dictionary and its features are excellent. However, although it works fine on my iPad, it will not open at all on my iPod touch which is very annoying! I would be pleased if you could fix this as soon as possible. Thanks!

Was good now useless
When i first bought this it was fantastic. Did everything it needed to. Then it started crashing and refusing to open. Now its an expensive app that sites in the cloud. Please fix it!!

Brilliant until it crashed

For my level of German this was a useful and easily accessible dictionary, but today for no apparent reason, it refuses to open - so now completely useless!

This is the best German dictionary app I've ever used. It's a little pricey compared to others but well worth the extra investment.

Most useful app I ever bought
I live in Germany, with limited German, and I use this every day. The translations and usage suggestions are really good, and the app is also easy and quick to use. Really well designed, even better since the update.

Good update, but...
It crashes all the time! Today it doesn't even open at all! (On an iPhone 4S) Fix it ASAP!
It would be 5 stars, but the crashing completely ruins it... It should be 2 stars, but if the bug is fixed then it's a great app.

Rotation problem with keyboard
I have just purchased this App and its virtually useless due to the face that the key board on the iPad will not rotate upright with the Dictionary. This has to be fixed urgently and I would not have purchased the otherwise great dictionary Had I read this was still a problem. Fix it!!!

Very impressed overall, however crashes in iOS 6 quite frequently... An update to fix this and to utilise the full screen if iPhone 5 would make it a 5 star product!

Wrong words
I bought this because I wanted the convenience of a large dictionary in my pocket and for the first few weeks it was fine. Today I am compiling vocabulary lists for my Integration Course and I find the dictionary's search engine can't differentiate between schön and schon; two very different words. I want the definition of one and it takes me to the other. This is a basic and frankly lazy error by Collins. Fix this please.
Since the recent update, this app crashes every day. Please fix this.

Great app, one small request thought
I can't praise this series of dictionaries too highly - they are perfect for travel and worth every penny.
One small request. I also go to language classes and use the grammar section. This is very useful for looking up the conjugation of different tenses but there is one irritation. If you are doing an exercise on, say Konjunktiv I, every time you look up a new verb the display defaults to the present tense. It would be a smarter app for a smart phone if it remembered the tense that you' d consulted last and defaulted to that, or at least had a preference to do so.

Excellent and essential resource
I'm living in Germany and learning the language. This has been a huge help so far. A really extensive databse of words, and helpfully illustrated with sentence examples to show usage.
The interface is excellent, switching from German to English look-up happens on the press of a button, and the app works really fast.
Reading the other reviews here they seem to be awfully hungup on a few very minor points - I am tempted to say it's a bit of nitpicking that misses the real strengths of this app.
Certainly I have found this extremely helpful and easy to use. Bought it 8 months ago and still use it daily. Recommended.

Why not do some work Collins?
This app is good for basic German needs ie beginner and intermediete. The conjugation of each verb is given for all tenses and moods (which is the reason I bought this app in the first place) as is the gender of nouns. However, words not in everyday use are very often missing making this app useless for anyone interested in German literature. Also the general layout of the app is BAD! Switching from looking up a verb to getting its conjugation is a multi stage affair that requires considerable dexterity, and thus completely anathema to the general iphone ethos. It has not been improved IN ANY WAY since I bought it 2 years ago. Lameness!

All the Good Points: None of the bad.
To find a physical dictionary this good then you would have to carry something much larger, possibly five times the size of an iPad. After that you would have to flick laboriously through the pages to find the correct word. This dictionary is fast, concise and able to provide a wide range of alternate words and conjugations; worth every penny.

A poor performer
I got this dictionary intending to use it as my main German dictionary (I use the Collins German-English in paper), but I was severely disappointed by the range of vocabulary. In a quick test of half a dozen random literary words, none rare, it could not find: tumulus, architrave, tumescent or cuneiform (though it found Keilschrift). I'll try the Oxford now. But for a price equivalent to the Oxford Russian Dictionary and the Oxford Italian Dictionary, I expected more.

US or UK English?
Impressive functions here: search history, dictionary listings, conjugation for verbs; and clear typeface and layout. Some oddities which seem to confuse US and UK English, however: "colour" is bracketed as (US), not "color"; "paediatric" is labelled as US and not "pediatric". "Pavement" becomes "Gehsteig" while only "sidewalk" (US as bracketed) becomes the more usual (?) "Bürgersteig"; and only "sidewalk café" shows the useful "Straßencafé". US/UK editors please note! Otherwise a useful app.

Good, but others are even better
Bought this in the first place as I needed a dictionary and considered Collins to be good quality. And it definitely is a good choice: The handling is quite easy and is has everything you would expect just as a printed edition in the first place.
But as I knew from my Windows Mobile Smartphone, it could be even better, as you might want a digital dictionary to be even better than a printed one: This dictionary has no audio support for teh correct pronounciation and a misspelling can cause trouble as you don't find your words. There are Apps available doing better for the same price - I ended up buying the PONS dictionary as it was released and would say that PONS is the better value for the same price, being much more flexible. So compare carefully before you spend the money twice!
Collins is not bad, but others are better.

Wünderbar
Though not perfect this application has enough good features to recommend it to anyone needing a good German/English dictionary. As well a being pretty comprehensive it has conjugation tables of every verb. This means I no longer have to take a dictionary and seperate book of verbs when I go to my German lesson anymore. Obviously it's a lot handier when travelling too. Looking words up could not be simpler and every word of each definition links, in turn, to further definitions or in the case of verbs to conjugation tables as well.
What would make it better? Well I would have found audio files to help with pronounciation extremely useful. Also some of the definitions contain explanatory notes. It would make more sense if these were in the language of the definition rather than the language bring translated.
All in all a very useful dictionary.
