Description

NewsTap is a powerful Usenet Newsreader for the iPad, iPhone and the iPod Touch.
Features:
- Optimized for offline usage, so you can read and write news articles without an internet connection
- It's easy and simple to subscribe, manage and read news groups.
- Filters (also known as "Killfile") can automatically mark articles as read or mark them with a certain color.
- The application fully supports the portrait and landscape mode.
- Support for binary groups (photos and other files). Photos and pictures can be displayed directly. It's possible to add photos into the photo album or open them in other Apps.
- Quotes are displayed in different colors. Colors are also used to distinguish between read and unread articles, filtered articles.
- Hyperlinks are automatically detected and can be opened in a web browser.
- Optimized article layout for the small iPhone display. The original article layout is also available.
- Navigate within the articles from within the thread view or simply by flipping to the next/previous article with your finger.
- A graphical „tree view“ visualizes a complete discussion and makes it super-easy to follow and participate discussions.
- It's possible to hide articles that are already read and to hide quotes.
- Sync the read/unread states of the articles using a „newsrc“ file with other usenet client. The sync can be done via SFTP, WebDAV, Dropbox and iCloud.
- Post new articles or send followups.
- Build-in help, which explains all the application features.

What's New in Version 5.5

Because of a bug in iOS 14 very large and deep threads could not be read properly anymore. So articles of the groups could not be accessed. The new release will include a workaround for this iOS 14 issue, so articles do no longer get lost. There was no such problem under iOS 13 or older.

Killfiles need attention

As a usenet application it’s ok but the filters (killfiles) need the option to Delete posts. As it is, simply marking them as read still leaves them cluttering up the timeline.
A kill filter should do just that, kill the posts, ie delete them.
By definition they are not wanted, not just marked as read.

It's great this exists

Having not read news for several years, I'm really glad to find that NewsTap still exists and is supported: thanks!

Quite functional and nice update

NewsTap is a functional news reader, and while I don't think it will win design prizes, it works. Best NNTP reader I’ve found.
The update fixes iOS 9 compatibility and now scales to the bigger iPhone sizes.

The best newsreader on any platform

So happy to see this superb update to Newstap. I really missed it when the iOS9 beta broke it and it's great to have it back. It was definitely worth waiting for. Usenet junkies are a dying breed, so I really appreciate the hard work the developer has put into this app. Thank you!

Performance poor

Functionality wise it would be OK (forgetting the dreadful interface for implementing 'filters' (ie. killfiles),) but unfortunately the performance is very poor.
Basic interactions like skipping from message to message invoke a complete freeze of indeterminate duration, or one time in ten it crashes completely. Changing settings in something like a filter doesn't actually work so you have to delete and start again every time, which you'll be doing a lot because the absence of a 'show full headers' option on messages means setting up a filter is a matter of trial and error (assuming they actually work at all - I've yet to successfully get any to work.)
Could be good but let down by, being blunt, amateur programming, reminiscent of 1990s freeware quality. Absolutely not worth paying for in its current state.

Good job

Mr Clauss has done it again. He has a very good pedigree behind him, I remember CAB on the Atari. So if you want a basic usenet reader then this does the job, not had a single problem and great for keeping an eye on the group when you are on the move or in the loo.

Really good. Needs some one touch features

I think this is an excellent usenet reader and I'm very happy with it. However, F
For me, it is really essential for there to be a one touch facility to mark a group as Read. Possibly a one touch for marking ALL groups read as well. And with an option in the set-up NOT to have to confirm such one touch commands.

Reallyvgood

Really good and well worth the money. I had no problems connecting to my news server and selecting groups. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is the insistence on using a 3 pane window layout.

Essential

Have had this application on the iPhone for some time now and been entirely happy with it as a quick and easy means to keep up with Usenet groups while out and about. The iPad upgrade has made a great application simply superb - the larger screen is perfectly suited to in-depth article reading across multiple groups. Very very pleased indeed and I'd have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone wanting a good and capable Usenet article reader.
Drawbacks, if there are any at all, are entirely minor and hopefully would be looked at in future versions. It would be nice to be able to switch off the animated page turn transition between articles. Plus the window doesn't keep up with the highlight bar in the articles list at the top right and can tend to move off the bottom if you're working your way through a number of articles using the 'next' arrow button rather than by clicking on each article in the list individually. Small points which don't distract in any way from what is a superb application.

Gets better and better

It's a Usenet client and it's on the iPhone. What more could you ask? Though seriously, bugs are fixed very quickly and useful new features are added with each new version.

Excellent App

Addition of multiple server support in v2 has upped my rating to a full five stars. This is easily my most used app on iPhone. Thanks for the enhancements and for producing such a useful app!

Very good

But needs a threaded view & the ability to mark crossposted messages as read in all groups after viewing in one.
Also needs the ability to post to more than 1 group at a time.
