Not updated.

Considering the price of this app I was surprised to get a message flag up about it which said the application will not be compatible with future versions of IOS and may slow down my phone unless the developer updates the software.

An excellent app with some missed opportunities

This is a very neat and useful app. It seems a pity that it doesn't stretch to comprehensive cover of the colregs though. The less well known lights such as fishing vessels shooting nets could easily be covered in an extension section.
In the learning section the self test function showing lights in the dark is clearly a lazy effort. The lights are just taken direct from the teaching examples, so for instance, for a single white light an answer is given of 'power vessel more than 50m in length from astern' because that is the blacked out example in use. In fact it could be a vessel of any length from astern, a vessel less than 7m, a small vessel at anchor, etc etc. if the effort was made to write a bit more code it could be a brilliant tool.

Lack of information

It needs more information. Doesn't have what I expected it to. Update maybe ?

Irritating attitude to older platforms

I have just reset my iPhone 3G and updated apps only to find that the current version of this app only runs on iPhone 5. What do Imray presume that the many users of older phones are going to do? It would be useful to be able to access the older versions.
If I could award zero stars I would!

Well, OK I suppose!

Whilst there is certainly much information presented through this app, overall the diagrams are really disappointing! The app simply fails to make use of screen real estate available on iPads. Hopefully, this will be addressed in a future version!

Some very good illustrations and animation but it would benefit from a bit more actual simulations like the harbour entry which is excellent.

Whilst all the information is there, I was Disappointed at the very basic presentation. I felt it could have been done in app form with a lot more imagination and flair.

Be wary

Although most of the content is correct there are serious errors, such as the amendments to COLREG Annex IV that have not been included yet.....too long since they became law.
The International Code of Signals definitions for the flags are incorrect, for example the Bravo flag does not mean simply "dangerous cargo"
Imray, please sort it out, you are meant to be a respected organisation, shame on you.
To all studying for CoC's please be careful, use the correct definitions in Orals.

Replaces lots of paper references!

Nicely replaces a stack of flash cards - all of which cost a few pounds each! As a reference for sea-faring folk, it does the job well, and the latest update to add iPad compatibility in a universal app is great!

Very good app have been using it to learn buoyage and the rules would be better if it had tester and also morse code in separate.

Great App

I'm in the Merchant Navy and I use this app all the time as a reference. Everything is 100% accurate and very easy to understand. Must have for any one learning there ColRegs, or for any weekend sailors.

Simple & useful

A useful aide-memoir, quick revision tool and introduction to current rules. i agree a self-test facilit would be a welcom addition.

Alright but could be slicker

All the information you might expect from this app is there, it's just not very slick.

Not bad

It only has very basic info included so only useful to an absolute novice.
The descriptions for things like overtaking etc are very rushed and only have a few word, it would be good if all descriptions were padded out with more info.
Not a bad app but would have expected more for the price.

Good

It's a pretty decent app but still in it's infancy. Nonetheless the best nautical app available thus far.

Excellent App for learners and also for those already sailing as an aid memoir. Could be improved with some exercises to get 5 star rating!

Constructive criticism.

Delightful little app that may become a really useful learning tool for people travelling etc. (Fog signals might annoy the people sat next to you though). However there are one or 2 technical errors to be corrected. I thought people who published things like this were bombarded with corrections from "nurds" as soon as they published but these slipped through the net! We have e mailed the details to the publisher. More updates before 5 stars..

better than flip cards

a training tool and reference manual from the trusted source of Imray, great!.
One comment, it would be even better if there was an option to make the night lights apear without the ship outlines.
Other than that it would be a 5 star.

Good content, difficult to navigate

Whilst the information is accurate and detailed, the layout is a bit haphazard. Perhaps I'm not the target user for this app: I don't use this while navigating, I just thought it might make a suitable replacement for various reference books. It does, to an extent, but it's not complete enough for me. Why are some Rules present and others not? It just feels like an introduction to lights and signals, and I can't help but feel that something's missing.

Handy to have

I teach Young Officers in the Royal Navy Reserve and Rule of the Road forms a big part of their training. This is much more convenient than carrying decks of flash cards around - the learn feature is really good.
Could use a little polish but is much cheaper than buying a set of flash cards and a reference book.

Getting better, the new update has some good inprovements. Still could do with more info for more stars!

Marine Rules & Signals

rip off! could be so much better, e.g. be able to test yourself like flash cards. Wish I'd taken more notice of the other reviewers before paying for this, it's the equivalent of a six page pamphlet when you are expecting a book.

Imray review

I am very pleased with this application. Its real strength comes from the fact that I have all the key information I need, right there in the cockpit. If you're at the helm it's not always convenient to go below to look up a navigation mark!
The information is very logically laid out, and the interactive night time views are fantastic.
I would think that anyone who needs to study marine navigation, would also find it very useful.
Full marks!

Good but...

Agree with other reviews. Not a great deal for the money, I took about five minutes to read all the information contained in this app. I agree that Imray could have done more with the iPhone software, sound signals, flashing beacons etc. They did try with the harbour entrance page, this is the sort of thing the app should be full of. Rather expensive for what you get.

Conventient and user friendly

Admittedly I'm a little new to the game but I thought it was pretty good, well illustrated and much cheaper than... say... a boat. Write one that makes your iPhone waterproof, then you'll get 5 stars.

Not enough detail

I agree with the first review, I purchased this thinking it would give a lot more info, it is informative but very basic. I expected items such as cardinal marker identification in fog or at night, to illustrate flashing sequences, or a more interactive movement of vessels to show right of way / stand on vessels. As the previous person said, not worth the money & needs a lot more work. The RYA have a CD rom showing col regs, which I believe is free, which is far superior to this. In truth this should be a free app in its current form.
