Ens**ittification Alert

I paid for this app. I do not appreciate the increasing amount of upselling that has started to appear, wasting screen space in order to push useless “premium features”, without even the courtesy of a “dismiss” button. Today it was “Insights”: poorly written bits of ungrammatical, inauthentic, fluffy text which sound like they come from some teenager’s social media feed - or, worse, from some marketing department trying to sound hip. Why yes; I’d be delighted to pay for more of that, thank you ever so much. Stop it, Sleep Cycle! It’s a decent enough app when it sticks to what it does. These crude attempts at further monetization make me want to delete it in anger and buy an Apple Watch or Ouro ring instead. At the very least, add a profile setting for “Do not nag me about ‘Premium’ features again, as I have no interest in ever subscribing”. At best, offer occasional new features to your long-time customers, and discreetly mention, politely, and exactly once, that there are other “premium” ones which might also be of interest. Treat your customers well. It’s a radical thought, isn’t it?

Has stopped working

I’ve used this as my alarm for about 10 years. Unfortunately it has stopped working. Two nights in a row it has crashed after an hour and I am without an alarm. I can’t afford that so I’m having to ditch it. Don’t waste your money on an unreliable alarm.
Both app and phone are up to date.

Absolutely the best alarm clock

This was one of the first apps I purchased for my first iPhone around 2010 and I have been using it every night since then. I would find it extremely hard to go back to a regular alarm clock. The sleep analysis is also extremely interesting so why do I only give it 3 stars? Well recently it has turned into an annoying piece of nagware, trying to sell me a subscription at every turn. I don’t even get to see my sleep analysis without having to scroll past a load of clickbait trying to get me to subscribe. I’m now in a position of actively trying to find a replacement. I used to recommend it to friends but I wouldn’t now. Very sad.

Literally perfect

I’ve been using sleep cycle for about 4 months now, and I just want to say that it is perfect! The UI is very well designed, easy to navigate and smooth, the actual tracking which is done via breathing is fantastically accurate even when I’m fully rolled over in bed. The app also gives you a wide range of other Interesting stats like respiratory rate and coughing levels in your area. I couldn’t recommend this app anymore- even if you don’t want to pay you get an amazing range of features and the usability of the app is not limited (eg ads…)
Great job whoever made this :)

used to be a one time purchase :(

i bought this app years ago, and paid for it. i very rarely pay for apps so this felt like an investment. my health and routine changed and i deleted it, but came back to it as a student hoping to make my mornings easier. i’ve now discovered that it’s £35 a year, with no limited feature free version, and that the money i paid for it back then now means nothing. i have to find an alternative that i don’t know if i’ll like as much, all because everything now has to be a subscription. i understand that there are continuing costs with running an app, but id much rather have ads introduced, or a one time payment option again. will miss this app.

James

This is probably the most used app on my phone I have used it for years and I think it really helps me wake up in the morning especially in the winter with the dark mornings I find the sunrise simulator wakes me partially up even before the alarm goes off also the sound generator helps to block out my tinnitus . I would definitely recommend this app to anyone who has trouble getting to sleep and then trouble waking up in the mornings additional note the hue integration is very hit and miss sometimes works sometimes it doesn’t it’s very unpredictable ever uninstalling and reinstalling doesn’t fix it
Update Phillips hue integration now completely broken will not connect to hub even though I can control my lights from apple Home Screen or Phillips hue app they either need to fix it or stop advertising that it works with hue

Don’t use as an alarm!

Do not use this app as an alarm to wake you as well as track sleep. The app often stops at around 2am - both tracking and the alarm is then switched off. I’ve had this problem multiple times and it comes in waves. This is the next 6 monthly shut down it seems. Just as you start to trust it, it shuts down again. And definitely don’t pay for it!!!

Good app ruined by upsell spam

Early adopter and paid for it ages ago. Now get relentless in-app spam trying to get more money off of me.

Stranger things

This is a great tool to help regulate sleep, with breakdowns of each category. I would like to see more depth within insights. Not sure if I’ve missed one, a set time option would be an advantage.
While playing back my talking there seemed to be something present. I was responding to movement and what seemed to be poking. I then heard taking, not in something we would understand, and seemed almost electronic. It’s as bizarre as it sounds but the evidence is there.
Overall, yes it answer more questions than surprises for a healthier lifestyle.

Love it but...

Excellent app, tracks sleep very well and provides very useful insights that help me improve my sleep. However, I often sleep past the alarm, skewing my average sleep time and quality metrics. This is especially problematic when I have a few bad sleeping days in a row where I go to sleep really late but plan on waking up early. Once awakened by the alarm, I stop it, and get back to sleep another additional 3-4 hours. Thus, the app will only catch half of my sleep. Because of this, out of 200+ nights, I have an average of 5 hours. A solution would be to allow users to modify how much they've slept if they wish to do so for any given day. Or add an additional option of "sleep more" on top of the usual snooze or stop alarm options.

I don’t think it works

There are nights where I’m struggling to fall asleep yet when I check in the morning that section of the night is recorded as “deep sleep”. As an example I’m sick right now and I keep blowing my nose throughout the night (Sleep cycle even records that) yet claims I’m in a deep sleep. It’s too good to be true to be able to recognise simply by listening via a mic what sleep phase you’re in especially when it can’t event reliably tell if you’re awake or not. I like the idea but I just don’t think it works.
EDIT after developer review: it’s not in deep cycle “the whole night”, it just can’t reliably recognise the sleep cycles.

Other peoples recordings in my app

I have noted other peoples recordings appearing on my app. The recordings do not belong to me as they are of a couple playing with a pet, I sleep alone and have no pets nor watch tv or other media types which could possibly be confused as my sleep recordings.

Predatory Subscription Model

I used this app many years ago and it was incredible (had to delete because I wanted to take better care of my battery). Recently reinstalled but found they’ve started to use a super predatory subscription model. I know 100% I will not pay a subscription for any app yet it forces me to enter me card information.
“Oh but there’s a free trial!” Then why isn’t there an option to skip it? “Oh we’ll notify you a few days before your trial ends!” Then why isn’t there and option to skip it?
For this app I would have absolutely considered paying a one time fee (coming from a guy who has literally never spent money on the App Store) very disappointed to see what was once a genuinely good product succumb to greed. Time to look for alternatives.

Missing Features

No landscape mode for iPad is pretty surprising, as that’s probably how most have it set up on their bedside table. No light alarm or always on display, no volume gradual increase setting. It’s fine, but nothing special. I use a different iPad alarm as a light alarm.

Don’t believe the reviews!

Don’t waste your money. And don’t believe the 5 star reviews. It’s so inaccurate! I have insomnia but every night without fail it says I’m asleep in 1 minute and my quality of sleep in over 80%! Haven’t fallen asleep within a minute since a was a newborn! I even get up during the night to make camomile tea and read something- but it doesn’t register that at all! Says I’m sound asleep! Amazing

After two weeks of experimenting with my daytime habits, cutting down caffeine to 2 per day (finishing at 10 am), taking up meditation, making sure I get outdoors in the morning, exercising, but not too late, eating meals from 8 am to 4 pmand not snacking in the evening, and almost giving up alcohol (previously x1-2/night), and a few supplements like magnesium, I’ve achieved my first 100% sleep score - and feel great. This App gives you the feedback so that you know what you must do. I can’t believe I’ve put up with foggy brain and headache every day for so many years!

Wicked Monetisation Strategies

A fake roulette wheel giving you a guaranteed discount in the form of a “jackpot”. A fake countdown for an exclusive “timed” discount. These are strategies the developer employs to sell their product: I therefore do not respect them or their product and would certainly not support the development of it. Why would I use an app that is dishonest with me?
Thank you for the feedback!

The only way to wake up energised

Love this app. If I use a normal alarm I wake up exhausted every time and it never gets me in the right stage of sleep, but this app is perfect for fixing that. 4 stars though because a bit clunky having to manually start the sleep tracking every night - I wish there was a way to automate it so that the app starts automatically at bedtime.

Great for waking up

I have used this app for years now as the wake up window feature really helps me feel less groggy when the alarm goes off. There are some useful insights from the app too such as sleep quality and noises, and it’s interesting to see when I have a good or bad sleep.
Only criticism I have is that I can’t record naps on it! I do shift work so the regularity feature doesn’t really work for me which is fine, but I would love for there to be a way to incorporate a nap so it doesn’t affect my data. It would be cool if there was a box to tick for shift workers so it somehow took that into account, but I can imagine that would be tricky.

Good and Bad

So, sleep cycle is amazing.
I wake up feeling refreshed, due to the smart alarm, i love the way it is designed and i love the listening to your sounds feature and the graphs.
One problem which ruins it for me. Why is it only a yearly subscription? I dont see why there cant be a monthly subscription?
If there is a feature where u can get a monthly subscription im using other apps as it is practically useless without premium. Such a way to ruin such an amazing app.

Lacks Apple Watch integration

This is a great app which I’ve been using for many years. A great feature is the integration with Philips Hue & Apple HomeKit; this allows to fade down the lights at bedtime and fade them up around the time the alarm goes off so that you wake up gently with light.
It has a standalone watch up which has a silent alarm but lacks the other features. An integrated watch app would make this a 5 star app.

Please don’t keep putting user developed …

I have supported sleep cycle since 2011. I paid for the app early on when they were developing the technology. I would give it 5 stars as it really is a great app, if the company were not now putting valuable functions and user developed functionality behind a premium subscription. I understand the need to do this, why not offer those who supported the company early on something much better. Don’t get me wrong they do offer a better deal, it’s just not good enough and if it continues I will pay for another app, it’s immensely frustrating.

Just stops working

I’ve used this app for years, mostly for the wake-up window it gives you to gently wake you up. However, it isn’t a recent thing that it sporadically just shuts itself off after an hour or two. This has been happening to me for a couple of years, it’s been reported by plenty of people in the comments here, yet the response by the ‘developer’ is always like it’s a brand new, perplexing issue. Just fix it! We shouldn’t have to set a back-up alarm because your product (which is an alarm, that many of us paid for) doesn’t work - literally - half the time. In summary, good product when it works but completely unreliable as an alarm.

Now completely useless

I’ve been using this for maybe 5 years but suddenly, without warning, it’s turned into a subscription-only app. I can’t listen to anything it recorded, even if I go back to a date when it was working properly. I guess it’s time to delete!

Good app but seems inaccurate at recording sleep

I installed this app to record my sleep, rather than for the alarm feature. Overall, it’s a well made app that works well and has a nice design.
However, after using the premium free trial for a week I have some significant doubts over the accuracy of the data it records and over the sleep scores. For instance, there have been times when I have woken in the middle of the night to go to the loo (even picking up the phone to check the time) but when checking the app in the morning it has said I was soundly asleep at those times. There was also one morning where I woke up way too early and couldn’t get back to sleep so sat up and read my book for around an hour, the app said I was in deep sleep!
The sleep scores also seem to be calibrated to you in particular, which means you can end up getting very high sleep scores even if you haven’t slept particularly well or for a particularly long time. However, I’ve not used the app for long enough for me to get a proper indication of how well these work.
The app might be more accurate if you used an Apple Watch, or if you slept without a partner, but overall I would say that this is good for giving a general indication of your sleep but I wouldn’t rely on it being accurate.

Working again

UPDATE: the paywall screen stopped appearing yesterday. I tried to bypass it multiple times over 4 to 5 days, before contacting the developer for technical support. The day after the dev responded to my email, the paywall stopped appearing.
I’ve used this app for a decade. And it was vital for me. Now it is forcing me to find a replacement. I have serious problems with sleeping due to severe ADHD. I’ve been using this app for since 2011, as I found it helped me improve my sleeping quality and my ability to function when I woke up. I also paid for extra functions. But the app now forces you to subscribe. Subscribing (which is expensive) gives access to features I don’t need. But the full-screen selling page can’t be skipped or bypassed, as there isn’t a “no thanks” option and the “restore purchases” option has to be used each time the app is opened to get access to the alarm clock. This has broken the iOS Shortcuts and automations I used to controlled this app, as you can no longer use the alarm without subscribing or going through 3 screens to restore purchases every time you open the app.

Could be a whole lot better

The UX and the interface are great, definitely above the competitors but I still find the accuracy still a little inconsistent, sometimes it does reflect my sleep well sometimes far off, even though the environment is exactly the same. Two things to mention, I’m not sure if line charts are the best way to display the data properly, see other sleep trackers for reference. Secondly, I want to see my sleeping pattern throughout the day, not relying on the OS’s sleeping schedule or alarm time range. This also means I want to know if I fell asleep for a nap during the day and how it impacts the quality and sleep debt. And you only need a smart watch or fitness watch to do it so I don’t see why it can’t be considered. Naps are sleep too! :)

I’m annoyed

This used to be a free app that you could use and obviously there was a premium versions to get a bunch of extras I deleted it thinking I didn’t need it anymore for some reason and when I re-downloaded it because lately I’ve found it hard getting up on a morning sometimes I don’t even hear my alarms I changed the sounds and everything and still can’t get up on time so I have gone back to this app because when you could use it for free one of the only free thing you got on it was waking you up on your lightest sleep when you choose what time you want to get up and it worked but now I go onto this app and it’s telling me I need to pay a subscription just to even use the thing I’m so annoyed and I hope the maker of the app sees this and gets some realisation of this problem and go back to how it was because it might as well be an app that you need to pay for even to just download it because saying it is a free download is so misleading as you can’t even use the app without paying

Needs improvements on auto detection and watch integration

The app the amazing, and the main idea of choosing the best time to wake you app based on the rhythm of your sleep is GENIUS! However, I’m personally deciding to not stay with the app for one reason, the app needs you to report that you’re asleep which is very impractical, it’s something is very easy to forget and there are a lot of cases in which I wake up, take a meeting to respond to some emails in beds and they get back to bed for a morning nap, this app won’t track all of that, a lot of apps out there are automatically detect that you have slept, especially if you have an Apple Watch, I’d believe this app will benefit a lot from improving their Apple Watch integration/auto detections/and looking into other more accurate vitals like heart beat, wrist movement, etc in addition to just listening to you.

Annoyed

So I paid a premium rate a few years back, promised it to be a one off good buy. I’ve also recommended it to friends as a good one off by. I use the pink noise and rain on car roof for anxiety and sleep deprivation/ insomnia. It’s become a thing for me. Only for all of that to be taken away and me having to spend £34 for the year to use what I’ve always used. I remember back in the day that sleep cycle called it a one off payment. I feel stupid and robbed basically. I’ve been loyal only to be subjected to some contra cat they’ve made. I’ll be looking for an alarm clock that I don’t have to pay £2.50 a month for. We all know it’s only going to go up. Never put your money and trust into building an app. They’ll only rip you off against they’re words later down the line.
Once trusted, not anymore. As good as the app is. I’d give it 5 stars. But I feel like they’ve walked all over me as a loyal customer.
Thanks sleep cycle. I’m use be among your first customers 😞

Sleep Cycle reveiw

In my opinion this app is very helpful for me when I am trying to get good hours of sleep. The main alarm really helps me wake up and just a few months ago I could hardly get out of bed. This has gotten my sleep process so much healthier and I now have at least 9.5 hours of sleep a night with no trouble of getting to sleep.
The premium is extremely affordable with the prices being £2.45 a month with an option to cancel the subscription at any time! Some people may not think it is needed but I think it is a cool feature and I am very interested in what I say in my sleep. If you are having a hard time getting to sleep, you can choose anything from sounds of the sea to bed time stories, personally I like to do some meditation to clear my mind before bed.
This is definitely a great application and would recommend to people having a hard time sleeping! Thank you for reading and I hope this helped :)

Sleep Cycle

Great insight to my sleep patterns & has really helped me refocus on a healthy sleeping pattern.
Previous to using this I was setting 6 morning alarms on my phone and snoozing them to the point of rushing around for work in the morning as I really struggle waking.
The smart alarm gradually and gently wakes me whilst still in bed. I’m feeling like I’m falling like awake before getting out of bed which is the best part of the app for me! No more panic & running around grumpy like I’ve been dragged out of a warm cocoon against my will 😊
I have mild sleep apnea, it’s been intriguing being able to track, monitor and actually listen to the amount & regularity of my snoring & after longer use I can see what might be impacting the quality of my sleep along with making some lifestyle changes.
The only reason I’m knocking a star off is it appears to capture my audio books, not a major problem. It would be even better if they would integrate more human interaction on different wellbeing subjects into the app, maybe weekly podcasts etc but in all honesty for the price it provides me with what I need & does what it says on the tin. Probably asking too much 😄 reasonably priced for the upgrade, not out of reach & ridiculously expensive, to me worth the money. Hope that helps

What’s with the bird!

I’ve used this app for more years than I care to remember, but honestly, with each update it becomes more and more unreliable in the data it gives! Last night I couldn’t sleep, I lay awake listening to two of your stories, this morning the app shows that I was asleep half of this time!! It apparently thinks I was sleeping when I went to the bathroom too! Unfortunately these are not isolated data, it’s become so unreliable recently! I just bought a new phone, so for one night used the app on both phones, one either side of the bed, low and behold, two completely different sets of data recorded!!
And what’s with the bird noise? There are no birds anywhere near to where I live but each day I’ve an assortment of noises recorded as ‘bird’, too bizarre. Can I suggest you stop these useless updates, they haven’t improved the app in any way, shape, or form, quite the opposite!

Inaccurate readings

I have been using the free version for around 3 years now. More out of habit than anything else. The readings are always wrong, saying I’m asleep when I’m actually awake Said I was coughing when I wasn’t it was actually a bird. Also since I have used this app it says I snore which I have never done in my life. I’m still trying to work out what it is picking up.
One of the most recent changes to the free version is so annoying, a recording that is 47 mins long, so boring it is unbelievable. I have to keep switching it off. This horrible feature comes on automatically and it is the only free one. Every night I switch it off. Also who wants to listen to something for the best part of an hour when they are trying to go to sleep? That is absolutely ridiculous. This alone will make me uninstall and stop using the app.
I think the developers are going the wrong way about this. Who will pay for this app when the only free one is the most boring recording ever that they have to switch it off? That again is ridiculous. As far as I’m concerned this app has gone from good to poor and definitely not worth even having it downloaded, in the 3 years I have been using it. I’m uninstalling it today.

Highly recommended!

Very good app, pretty much faultless to be honest. Though I would like a feature when the alarm is in use that tells you how much time is left until you wake up as I feel that could be beneficial when you are going to sleep or wake up in the middle of the night. Other than that, it's honestly the best alarm app I've come across and probably the best app on my phone. Highly recommended! Update: pretty much the same comments. Love every feature really, but I've had issues in the past when I'd set a song from my music to wake up to, and it had reverted to an app sound within 1 or more uses of the alarm (using every night). I don't know when exactly it would have reset because it was selected to my music when I set the alarm, and it took a few days possibly to realise this.

Used to work but…

I have used this app for years, but lately it’s getting the times I’m asleep wrong and I don’t understand why? I wear a smart watch, and that is always correct. I’d prefer my sleep cycle to work however as I don’t want to always wear my watch to bed. Last night I went to bed early at 10:30ish. I know I was asleep about 10:40 and sleep cycle agrees I was asleep after 10 minutes. It also agrees I woke up at 7.30… but is telling me I only slept 7 hours 28?! That’s WRONG by an 1 hour 20 mins approximately. It keeps doing this. So maybe this app needs bugs fixed or somthing. Also to hammer the last nail, my watch had my sleep time correct as 8 hours 40. I used to have all the listening to the sounds features free as well and it’s annoying you have to pay for that-but I get it-& don’t mind. Just wish it could actually track my sleep correctly!

Not working as expected

I’ve had the app for around 2 years and used it almost every day for the first month but then I ran into a lot of problems. I think the idea of the app is great but it says I’m asleep when I’m lying in bed awake and the alarm usually just wakes me up at the earliest possible time in the window. I tried using it again recently to see if any updates improved the problems I had, but the same thing happened and I had an absolutely terrible night of sleep, and it said my sleep quality was around 80%. Then it showed that it hears talking and snoring, and I never do that so I’m sure it was coming from the other room because the people sleeping there sometimes snore but I can’t check because I would need premium. I really hope that it doesn’t work like this for other people, and maybe I was using wrong, I’m not sure. But I really hope it’s improved if I’m not the only one dealing with these issues.

Honestly

I always use this App to monitor my sleep. Every time I change my mobile this is one of the first Apps that I will download onto my new device. I have invested in the premium paid section before but lost it due to multiple downloads. It was worth the extra information but I feel that I won’t keep purchasing it every time once I have lost the password to reinstall the paid features. I am happy with the level that I get without the extra features anyway and continue to use on a daily basis for a long long time. Also hoping that my sleep information will help towards a better understanding of sleep for the scientific community in the future. Well done guys keep up the good work.

Powerful by mixed experiences of accuracy

Sleep cycle is no doubt a powerful app with a lovely UI, some great functionality (I love the ability to add tags and see what may be contributing to sleep issues) and I think the pricing is fairly reasonable. I would like it if there was greater consistency with regards to the data collected by the AW app vs iPhone. For example, if I use my AW app only, I’m not asked about my mood when I wake up. I also lose the snoring functionality.
Perhaps my biggest issue is the lack of any way of correcting obvious tracking mistakes. The app said I was awake between 5am-6am today, which wasn’t true but the only way to stop the data skewing your averages is to delete the whole day. An edit raw data function would be quite nice in my opinion.

Useless since updates - alarm randomly doesn’t go off

For five years I’ve used this app without a problem, absolutely loved it and recommended it to all my friends. Then about 6 months ago it just stopped working. You set an alarm, and the app just switches itself off during the night. So it doesn’t track your sleep, and worse still the alarm doesn’t go off in the morning, so what’s the point? And the even more annoying part? It’s absolutely random. Works 4 nights in a row and then on the 5th night, nothing, turns itself off again. Maddening. The developer response is to fully charge your phone before bed and leave it unplugged; but the app eats battery like no-one’s business, so your phone either dies before the morning, or you wake up to a dead battery!? Oh wait, and their alternate response: “please set a backup alarm just in case.” You’ve got to be kidding me?! What’s the point of a sleep tracking and alarm app that neither tracks your sleep, nor has an alarm, and you have to set another alarm as backup??? They need to fix their recent bug introduction, or revert whatever useless update they did 6 months ago and go back to basics. Looking for an alternative until they do, such a shame.

A great app

I’ve used this app nearly every night since 2010 so have amassed a stack of useful information which I use to change my sleep pattern. The developers have been very quick to respond to recent issues mentioned in feedback - thank you. I need reading glasses which I don’t wear to bed (!) and it would be useful to have a toggle switch to turn off notification prompts on the landing screen about new sleep aids or whatever, because I need to walk back upstairs to find my glasses to read the messages and then don’t sleep so well!! (Hence my 4* score) In an attempt to switch these off In settings I’ve hidden Insights, have set Sleep Aid ‘keep download to forever’ (in case the 20 day setting was triggering the messages). On a very positive note, from my previous feedback left I note that Sleep Cycle continues to evolve.

Probably more suited for non-disabled people.

I’ve only been using the app for the sleep analysis, not the alarm. Unfortunately it isn’t able to distinguish between me being asleep or lying awake. I can wake up and lie there for two hours perfectly awake, then I pick up my phone and stop the app, and it thinks the time that I switched off the app is when I woke up and that I was sleeping for those last two hours. It also can’t tell when I leave the room during the night to use the bathroom, it thinks I’m sleeping then. So it never gets the length of time that I was sleeping right, which makes it kind of redundant. I am interested in how long I actually sleep vs lying in bed, and given I’m chronically ill, I lie in bed a lot through necessity. Also, the ‘tips’ it gives me, I know these are probably relevant for most people, but being told I would sleep better if I went for a walk before bed would be a whole lot less offensive if that was actually possible for me - I’m unable to walk more than 20m, FYI. The wording of these tips could be changed to say, for example “if you are able, you could go for a walk before bed…”. Don’t assume everyone using the app is non-disabled, it’s ableist.

Not accurate or helpful, waste of time.

This app does not work. I used this app for a week and found it didn’t once accurately record any of my sleep patterns. I wake up about 10 times a night and the app would be lucky if it picked up one of these times. I followed the instructions to the letter and was very disappointed by the results. It’s a good idea in theory and I’m sure some functions work but this app has proven to me repeatedly it cannot do what it claims, which is a real shame because understanding sleep is so important. Although this app has a cool idea and an easy to read lay out, the way it works is flawed and aside from telling you when you go to sleep and when you wake up (something you have to do manually anyway) it doesn’t accurately tell you anything else. This is not an reliable app and doesn’t work sadly, so my recommendation is do not waste your money buying the full version. Even the free version seems like a waste of time.

Here’s why I deleted it after 4 years

So I’ve used this app for about 4 years with the subscription. It is a very good app. I love the data I have built up and it gives some insight. That said, the data is also pretty useless. Over time my sleep quality scores have gone up, but my sleep hasn’t changed. The scores it provides have gone up because the app learns YOUR sleep and gives you boosted scores when it knows enough about your sleep, you know after 4 years. I always score like 90+ in the later years of using it. This means that ALL of the data from years gone by is useless as the room for error in the new data has reduced. It is the most unscientific experiment ever. Afyer 4 years I can tell you the main benefits of this app are the wake up window and audio recording.
The rest for me is a gimmick. It doesn’t work well in partner mode. It’s sleep scores are not accurate, I’ve often felt like I’ve had the sleep of my life and scored 60%. I believe a healthier sleeping pattern involves waking at the same time each morning, something this app discourages with its wake up window (this is optional tho), and also not incorporating a smartphone into your sleeping. Keep your phone away from your sleep area. Since I’ve stopped using the app and started waking at the same time each morning with a normal alarm, I feel much better. I enjoyed the app, but I do not believe it has any positive effects on your sleep and if anything encourages poor habits.

Couldn’t really live without it tbh

Been using this app for years! I’ve had the free and paid service before and both are amazing. Can’t really afford the paid one now but I use this every night and love that it stores my sleep logs. Also I can’t stand the iPhone alarms!! the ones on this app are so much nicer to wake up to and allows you to gradually wake up. The alarms go off softly half an hour before you actually set the alarm and allows you to snooze by tapping your locked screen (sometimes don’t even have to tap it, I swear it just knows when I’m awake) … then when it comes to the time you actually need to wake up the app will make you unlock your phone to switch it off ✨

Can now drift off wake up early! 😀

This app has greatly helped my sleep /wake competency. I am able to fall asleep much easier with the guided voice which I really like. I also wake up early and easily thanks to the smart touch snooze alarm which is a game changer. Overall a great app, tracking seems reasonably accurate, although it’s hard to tell, but for an app, it seems good and generally reflects how I feel when I’ve woken up. My only gripe would be that it doesn’t sense body presence, just sound. So if I leave the room, it can think you’re asleep and give a false reading! Also I’ve been awake in the night and it hasn’t properly sensed that. So upgrading its technology would be good, but for practical, everyday purposes the tracking format seems sufficient. Thanks for this app, and for providing a solid enough free version. I’ll no doubt upgrade at some point.

Apple Watch with Bedtime Mode

Tried a few nights on my Apple Watch, and was very happy with results on the first morning in terms of the intelligent wake up during the 30 min default window, but my Sleep in the Health app (iOS 14.4.2) recorded the correct time sleeping while Sleep Cycle consistently showed hours less, both as being asleep and being in bed. I did not put my watch or iPhone on silent mode just to be safe that I could hear the alarm the first few nights. Then I tried using Apple Bedtime mode (without alarm) where I edited the end time to end before the Sleep Cycle alarm window started, but the Sleep Cycle alarm did not sound. Now third day the same. This morning, after oversleeping an hour, I chose the Sleep Cycle app from the apps running in the background on my watch and as soon as I’d chosen it the Sleep Cycle alarm sounded immediately albeit an hour late. Can you please get it to work with Bedtime mode? This is not the same as silencing my phone and putting watch in Nighttime mode manually since I’d like them to be silenced during sleep but un-silenced automatically when I wake up, preferably when Sleep Cycle chooses to alarm, but at least when the Apple Sleep period ends that morning.

So inaccurate

I was so happy to finally get an Apple Watch but disappointed with the lack of sleep information available. I’ve had a Fitbit, and an even cheaper health watch more recently that gave really good insight to my sleep pattern so I was sure the series 6 watch would measure up.
I have a chronic condition where I can wake up with the most horrendous migraines very suddenly in the night. Kind of feels like I’ve been whacked round the head with a cricket bat! I am a very restless sleeper anyway but my condition makes sleep more difficult. My husband often states that I appeared to be fast asleep, when I feel very unrested and as though I have been on the edge of waking up all night (when you’re aware of every sound around you and it filters into your dreams).
I was desperate to understand my sleep better and see how I could improve it and this app looked perfect. The first couple of weeks were great. I even started to sleep better, longer, fall asleep faster (always been a problem unless the TV is on). But then I started noticing that the app would have no knowledge of me getting up in the night to use the bathroom, or pacing around the bedroom looking for painkillers in the night. As long as someone was breathing/snoring it assumed I was asleep. Never mind it was me wearing the watch!
The last straw was the night I lay awake in pain virtually the whole night and maybe had a couple of catnaps. It recorded 100% sleep quality on this night. What a load of b******s!

NOT GOOD

This app simply doesn’t work as it’s advertised to do so. I’ve been monitoring it closely for several months and it consistently fails to produce accurate data. I’ve also compared it with the Apple sleep app whilst wearing my Apple watch. It frequently records me asleep when I know I’m awake and vice vera. It fails to show awake when I get up during the night and even last night I woke twice (once with a nasty leg cramp) and it recorded a constant sleep over over 7 hours. The Apple watch always gives a greater sleep time usually around 45-60 mins extra sleep which is far more accurate. Curiously, it always shows me going to sleep in around 10 mins (which simply isn’t true) but when I wake during the night it often shows me taking 30-40 mins to go back to sleep (again not accurate). It consumes a massive amount of memory cache (currently over 1Gb).
Overall, this app is wholly inaccurate and consequently the data analysis is seriously flawed.

Disappointing treatment of old users

My rating a few weeks ago would have been 5. Thats no longer the case. I really like sleep cycle and have used it for about a year, it’s definitely the best smart alarm I have tried. However I was extremely disappointed that they just decided to stop users being able to set alarms one day out of the blue with no warning so I had to update to the new version where it’s no longer free. I have no issue paying for apps but this was a really shoddy way to treat existing users of your product. I only use the alarm functionality I am not interested in the rest of the features so quite frankly £25 is a ridiculous price and I will not be purchasing. You may wish to consider a much cheaper option for just the alarm

What’s changed?

I’ve used this for quite a long time and generally found it a pretty accurate measure. For a while now tho, the statistics are simply wrong. I am awake a lot through the night and it says I’m asleep. This isn’t a case of thinking I’m awake longer than I am, I’m actually sitting up reading or listening to a podcast. I often suddenly wake to go to the loo - I always check the time, yet when I finish the cycle the stats say I was still sound asleep during that time. This morning I was awake at 4, took phone with me to make tea etc, went back to bed to listen to various things and have done so for three hours, yet it says I slept. It’s so inaccurate now I’m really frustrated as how can I trust any of the amount of sleep it says I’m getting. Also different sounds, like a deep breath when awake gets mislabelled as a snore - as do various other sounds. This app used to be really helpful. Am now extremely frustrated by it.

A couple of problems

Okay, so. To start off with, I’m autistic, I struggle with routine and sleeping and this helps quite a bit to track how much I’ve slept the night before in regards to how sensitive I am during the day. It’s pretty good with the alarm that chooses when to wake you up when you’re most awake and it does that but I never actually wake up during it, it only kind of makes me turn off sleep cycle because I’m half asleep. But that’s my own problem with a lack of motivation to get up. And then here’s my absolute biggest problem with this. I use the sleep sounds but I only use one in particular and I can’t listen to any of the others. My routine is important to me so it has to be the same every single time. About half a year ago they made everything or most of everything premium features which included the specific sleep sound. After a massive meltdown and cracking my phone in anger I decided to get premium, just for the sake of the sound. The other features are nice but aren’t as important to me as the sleep sound. Now, for some reason. Even after I still have the premium version, the sound isn’t there and I’m losing my mind over this. Is this a temporary thing or a glitch or something? I don’t know what I’ll do if otherwise. The sound is aquascape and I think the composer is computer-generated...

Isn’t accurate

For the first week of using this app, i found it interesting to see how much sleep I got that night. The feature of listening to noises picked up in the night was a plus side... until I signed up to the free trial and listened to the noises. The app told me that during the night, I was coughing; although I didn’t remember doing this, I decided to listen. What the app through was coughing, happened to actually be picking up my phone receiving an email. Where the app thought I was snoring, was a car driving onto my street. This was funny but disappointing. As weeks went by, I started noticing inaccurate information from the app. This app actually develops information from the noises around you at night. If you are very quiet whilst trying to fall asleep, the app will tell you that you was in a deep sleep, when actually, you know you was awake. Therefore, that isn’t correct information. It’s just picking up noises, that’s all. It’s not learning or adapting like the adverts say. It’s just listening and providing you with incorrect results. I’ve decided to uninstall the app as I don’t find it necessary after discovering this.

Tricky icon but good app overall.

This app is good in doing what it promises. Even though there are a few premium features that you can access for free in other sleep-tracking similar apps. The data collected is not super accurate but still a little better than the average competition. I would say it’s an 4.5 points app in its category. Though it has a huge problem: instead of designing an original logo/icon they almost just did a copycat version of the original Apple “Alarm” app icon. Same orange background colour Apple uses for all their official timing apps, same white line, same stroke thickness and almost exact same design than the official Apple Alarm, so it is not possible to differentiate them. Can’t say if this was a thought move to trick user trying to open the Alarm clock feature, or if they tried to keep aligned with the Apple system, or if it is just laziness to hire a graphic designer to design their own logo. Anyway, this is too confusing and should be changed.

Long time user

I’ve been using this app for years and have always found it to be VERY accurate, even noticing when I woke up for a few minutes to have a sip of water or go to the toilet. Well worth the money I have been paying. However, in the past month the data has been inaccurate, it has not logged when I’ve gotten up and has just assumed me to be asleep from the minute I start it. It has also been picking up my podcasts which I use to help me sleep as snoring or me talking, again this is new as it has usually ignored these sounds. This has never been the case before and I’m hoping it’s just a glitch with the latest update. If it’s not, however, and this persists I will reluctantly be ending my premium payments as it’s not useful to me if it’s recording incorrect information.
To anyone reading the reviews deciding whether or not to get this app, I advise you wait until the next app update with bug fixes.
Otherwise, it’s helped me for years, I hope it gets back to normal soon!

Almost great

I had the same sleep app for ages but then it wouldn’t update on my new phone so went searching for a new one. This is so much better than my old one in lots of ways. The gentle alarm and being able to snooze it by tapping my bedside unit is awesome. The journal is way more detailed and insightful than my last app too. I fall asleep with the tv on so I find if I don’t wear my watch it’s not so accurate at knowing when I fell asleep but that’s my fault that I can’t always wear it overnight because I need to charge it then, if I’m wearing it then it all becomes very accurate again. I like that this also updates the apple health app too. My main gripe against this is the paying for listening to noises? There are many free recorders and even my old app had free recording but to pay £25 just to hear snoring seems a bit excessive. You do get a lot of extra features for paying but I only wanted the noise recording that is pretty standard in most sleep trackers so will be looking for an alternative app in the future.

6 and a half years in and I can’t wake up without it

Yep, I’ve used this app for 6 and a half YEARS, every night, without fail. I recommend it to everyone I know. The way it wakes you up means I never wake up tired, and the insights into your sleep (especially after a long period of time) are really interesting! For someone who has never been a morning person, the gentle wake up cycle leaves me fresh and fully rested come wake up time. I’ve kept the same alarm tone for the whole time of using this app (I recommend) as now the sound is always associated with waking up.
The graphs and charts that show sleep patterns are so cool to look at and being able to add your own markers before you go to sleep is really useful, and you can see on a percentage how it affects your sleep!

This is AMAZING

I’ve always had trouble trying to get up in the morning from my normal alarm so I decided I’m just going to get a proper app. I was looking for some good app that will help me and I came across sleep cycle. It looked really good and had great features I tried it for the first few days and it was great!! I happily woke up in a light sleep and I actually was ready to get out my bed instead of my normal alarm which was insane!! I also love how as soon as you wake up if tells you have long you slept for unlike other sleep apps you have to wait along time just to find how long you slept that night?! Sleep cycle is just so easy to use and is absolutely great for people who have trouble waking up in the morning! Even though I don’t have the premium it still works great and fine! So I am very impressed with how great this app is! Question- Does sleep cycle still work even with people sleeping in the same room near your phone or can it mess up the cycle a bit hopefully not because I have roommates how like to snore and I hope that doesn’t affect anything!!😀 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Used to be brilliant, now just useless

I’ve had this app for nearly 2 years and until July 2019, it was pretty spot on in recording my sleep patterns. Since the big “upgrade” in July, however, it’s been almost useless.
It now doesn’t recognise when I’m awake (even when I know I’ve been using my phone, it records me as sleeping). The Apple health app uses the data from sleep cycle but gives different results! And now, for the second time in a week, I’ve found (during a bout of insomnia!) that the app isn’t even running, despite setting it, which could have resulted in no alarm to wake me up. And the graphics are nice but more limited in what data has been included.
The response from the team was quick, so I can’t fault them there, but amounted to “delete and reinstall “. Apart from the faff factor, it has made no difference at all. I’m holding on in hope that they’ll go back to the previous version

App can’t adjust to time zones

Generally this app is good, however I also use this as my alarm clock and it turns out the app cannot be trusted when you travel to other time zones. I have overslept because the app thinks I am in the old time zone and been late for my meetings as a result. On the return trip it has woken me up an hour earlier because it again struggles to adjust back to the change of time zones. Absolutely hopeless and it will take a long time to regain the trust in the app again.
App developer responded saying that the phone needs to be restarted in full to avoid this issue. Now I know how to resolve the flaw, but pretty poor resolution and I am pretty certain that most users will not have read my review and will not be aware of this issue / resolution. I would have expected the app developer to say that they will resolve the bug rather than putting the responsibility on to the user...

Good, but with 1 flaw

I’ve been using the app for about a year now. The app is excellent and highly recommend it. There is, however, one thing I’d like to pass to the developers: last night my device automatically updated in the middle of the night (which includes resetting the phone), my alarm was set prior to the update... after updating, the alarm didn’t turn back on, and thus I was almost late for work! I had to catch a ride to work at 7:30am, luckily my ride was running late so I still made it... however this bug should definitely be addressed. What if you had a train booked, and this caused you to miss your train and miss an important meeting?... be cautious, perhaps with something ultra important it would be best to use the built in alarm

Updated app !!!

I paid a long time ago for the premium version which I really liked however now the app has been changed. In appearance it is nothing like the original that I paid for. The wake up alarm is totally different. When setting the alarm it would tell you your ‘wake up’ phase but now it doesn’t. When the alarm goes off .. it is very short and if you move it turns off. The display when alarm is set would previously slowly turn light down, now as soon as the alarm is set the screen goes black, so you are never sure if the alarm is set properly or not!
For anyone who has bought this updated version I am sure they would feel it was ok but being an old time user and purchaser of this app I think it’s bad that you pay for one thing and after a while it is changed and in my opinion not for the better. The numerous differences, the way data is shown and stored, the alarm, the lighting etc is not what I paid for. I would like the original version back ..... how does one go about getting their money back !!!!

Wake up gently

2014 review
Love this app! Best alarm I've ever used. Been using it over a year and very pleased with it.
One thing that'd be useful is being able to change the alarm time during the night. Sometimes I sleep badly and could do with delaying my alarm time. Sadly this isn't possible without cancelling and restarting the process, i.e. Having 2 records for one night. Apart from this a great app! Highly recommended.
2019 review
Been using the app for about 6.5 years! Looking at my previous review, There’s the feature to change alarm in the night now which is helpful. Thank you 🙏🏽
Also loving the latest update with the modern icons and useful info - steps, snoring, morning heart rate, etc is user friendly and useful
Also love the fact it now tells you the moon’s current cycle when you go to sleep. Shame this isn’t recorded on the journal page..... looks like there’s a space next to the morning heart rate to pop in a moon symbol with the correct phase (exactly as shows during the night on the night time alarm)? I sleep better when moon is in its fullest cycle so it would be good to see this on the daily page as well as in the trends. I’m sure this will be added, so thanks in advance 🙏🏽
Keep up the good work 👏🏽👏🏽 still loving this app! 🥰 Thank you 😊

Good but Astonishing Omissions!

It's a very good app with fascinating features the developers have clearly worked hard on. BUT it's hard to believe that - after all the years I've been going back and forth to check - the developers still haven't put in place two basic functions found on other alarm apps. These basic features would turn Sleep Cycle from a good app Into a great one:
1. I can't enter a period to fade up the volume, which means that I've no option but to wake up to deafeningly loud music faded up to max volume quickly, which is so obviously unpleasant!
2. I can't choose my own playlist to shuffle; I'm only allowed to choose one single song - which will quickly drive you insane if you have to listen to the same song over and over every day (or being forced to remember to dig into the settings over and over to change the song you're now sick of)!
It's hard for a non-developer to understand how someone can go to so much trouble to design and build such a complex feature set while leaving out such basic alarm functions.
I'll continue to check back in the hope that the developers provide these basics, following which I - like many others I'm sure - will finally be able to embrace the otherwise great feature set of this app.

Where have all the stats gone?

I’ve been an avid and happy user for 7 years with 2,300 nights recorded to date. It’s my most used app and one I have recommended to many people. I have been happy ever since my first use but since the update a few weeks ago with the new design a lot of my data has disappeared.
I seem to have lost my sleep quality by location, by my notes, the moon phase, air pressure and now just have very basic trend data. What is the point of adding sleep notes now if there is no trend analysis. I travel a lot with work and found the location analysis very usual. I am not sure if just my data is lost or if you have removed these features. Whatever the reason the output is now less interesting and I would love to have these key features back.

Where have all the stats gone!?!

Dear Sleep Cycle
What have you done? You stated that all of the original features remain in this visual rework however, that’s clearly not the case.
Put simply, where at the numerical statistics for anything longer than seven days gone? Now when changing period of observation within a specific fittest category worth the grass change right up to complete data as before, the textual average hello remained for just seven days.
So your original statement that all features have a present before having carried over is incorrect. I have been a subscriber to your app since around 2000 and, for over seven years now, I have become an expert user thriving and driving both my sleep and that of my family on the ability to compare specific numerical data across the differing period of observation.
This update now deprives us of this key capability which differentiated yourself from the rest the market and enable me to drive and manage our sleep effectively.
I am sure that I am not alone in speaking for most significantly long-term users whom have been making use of these key functional elements within your app, in saying that, without this functions, your app becomes of questionable use.
I would urge you to reconsider your redevelopment and absence of these stats accordingly as I along with his other expert long-term users will after the best part of a decade of use be forced to look elsewhere for the data which you have deprived us of access to.

Don’t like do not disturb

I have been using this app for just over a week now. Though I’m not entirely sure I trust the trends that it’s recording, I do definitely feel better waking up, less like, urrgghhh and more like I can actually get up in a reasonable time. I do think all the premium stuff would be good, but I’m not paying that much for it!
One thing that is bugging me, and I think needs to be changed, is the do not disturb feature. I have missed a phoned call from the ambulance service this morning relating to my brother, and only discovered the voicemail 6 hours later! There are NO settings in the app that I can turn this off. While I understand why they put this into the app, they need to let users decide whether to use it, and I already use the Apple do not disturb settings, which allows me to pick and choose what calls and notifications come through already. It’s enough to make me not want to use the app for fear of missing something like this again!

Useful for my health issues

I haven’t had the app for long, so maybe I’ll feel different about it in the future. So far, however, I find it incredibly useful in not just monitoring my sleep - which I like analysing since I have had various difficulties with sleep for years.
All of the things that it monitors and tracks as having an effect on my sleep also have an effect on my mental health. As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, it’s so much easier to keep track of the little things I do each day that I don’t think about and gradually have a much bigger impact on me.
This app, alongside Screentime - where my devices tell me just how much time I’m spending on them - are really good warning systems for when I’m treating my health with too little care, or when outside factors are likely to be affecting my mood so I can mentally prepare for it rather than have seemingly inexplicable bad days that leave me feeling helpless against myself.
That’s not even mentioning the gentle wake up the app allows me to start the day off right - especially important because I am NOT a morning person and on bad days I struggle to get out of bed at all.

Keeps syncing with my sister’s app...

Okay so I loved this app, did everything it was supposed to do, until I came home to visit family for Christmas. My sister is jet lagged and so had her alarm set for 5am, mine was set for 7:30am. She is staying in the next room to me.
My alarm went off at 4:45 in the morning on Christmas Day. After doing some digging in the app’s FAQs, apparently the apps of people who sleep in the same room automatically link together over wifi. Great for partners, not so great when your jet lagged sibling is next door. Why this happened when my sister is sleeping at least 20 feet away from me, in the next room, I don’t know, but I’m now a very grumpy person, wide awake at 5:15am, and as far as I can tell there’s no way of turning this automatic link feature off, and there was no warning that this feature was turned on when I set my alarm.

Had it for 2 years and deleted it today- hooray!

When it was free it was a bit of fun, hence the 2 stars. This morning it asked me to pay £25 a year. Waste of money so it’s gone from my phone. As the reviewer below says it recorded my wife’s snoring and blamed it on me. Hilarious but not v helpful if you want to record your sleep pattern for anything other than a laugh. Also hopelessly inaccurate at saying how much sleep I’d had. Records almost all your time in bed as asleep even if you’ve spent an hour or two lying there wide awake.
Interesting record of what I’d done each day, which could have been useful if all the information could have been seen in conjunction with each night’s sleep. However it wasn’t.
All in all, the free version now has so few feat it’s not worth using and the paid version is priced at five times what it’s worth.
Im going to spend the money I saved on extra sleeping tablets or something;-)

Overly sensitive, everything’s basically premium

I got this since I am a terrible sleeper and I figured maybe this was a way to track where I’m waking up and how long I stay asleep at a time.. I actually sleep 3/4 hours a night but I go to my bed and stay put for as long as possible to try and promote a routine, even if it’s staring out my ceiling. Apparently I slept 7hours and 35minutes.. and snored for almost 3 of them. The snoring was hilariously a combination of my cat and the road outside my house, I swear I don’t purr or have a horn. And the app on my tablet noticed I slept for 3hours and 17 minutes.. which is a big jump. This also puts your phone into basically flight mode, you won’t hear any messages or anything else.. I get the purpose but if you’re likely to get called into work early via text I wouldn’t chance it. I think that can be turned off somehow but I didn’t realise it done this. Personally this app isn’t accurate if your house has any noise, like the road outside of mine.

Wake ups are easy!

I’m in love with this app! I originally bought it way back when and didn’t really get along with it at the time. But, about a year ago I invested in some Philips Hue bulbs, so, thought I’d give the app a go again as the idea of waking to slowly brightening lights during the darker months was super appealing. It didn’t disappoint! What I also love is the amazingly calming yet super effective wake up sounds which have kept me using the app even though I’m not using the Hue bulbs anymore. What I hadn’t expected to find helpful was the sleep tracking, but knowing whether I’ve been able to get to sleep quickly, whether I’ve stayed asleep and whether it’s been restful have really helped with my sleep and mood disorders. My only disappointment was having to pay again to use the backup and sync feature, as all my other premium features came across great.
