Used to be great, now contaminated

I used to love this app - it offered a simple map and route plan. Even if they charged £5 to purchase the tool, I’d have paid for it.
Now it’s just a pile of garbage, filled with ad after ad - money, money, money and subscriptions, that’s what previously good apps now focus on, not on the user experience or offering value for money. Avoid and go with the tfl app. You’re even better off with a picture if the map on your phone! It doesn’t take a genius to work out how to get from A to B.

Awful filled with ads galore, feels like spam

Awful app, so bad that today I’ve gone in to see if it’s actually a TFL app or a knock off, but surprisingly it is a TfL app, which is shocking re its quality. I use it rarely, only when I want to decide on a route when I’m out & about - tried to use it yesterday on the train and as usual I had to sit & wait for ages (several minutes) waiting for the stupid video ads - that can’t be closed early - to stop playing. Why do you need ads on a map app? I shut it down twice hoping it might end the ads, but alas, the videos started upon opening the app every time. So I just forced quit & when to Google to find a map image instead. Awful awful app with a really cheap, spammy & unusable feel. About to delete & find an alternative.

Cynical money-maker. Avoid

This may work if you are London based. As an occasional visitor I find it is desparate to sell me an over-priced subscription and when I finally get through the sales menus the cookie policy is impossible to “decline cookies”.
I would seriously avoid it. It’s only a map after all. Deleting as soon as my review is confirmed.

A once-great product now barely usable

The pop up ads have killed this app for me. They are difficult to navigate (eg hard-to-find close buttons) and they obliterate the screen, so you can’t rely on this app if you need info in a hurry. Of course ads are necessary to fund the maintenance and development of the app, but there must be a smarter way to do this. Google is a better bet these days.

Used to be good, now has really inconvenient ads

This used to be my go-to app when travelling on the underground, however they have now added in ads, so every time you open the app you’re stuck with a 5 second ad. These always pop up right at the most inconvenient time, when you’re in the middle of planning your journey. It’s fine if you aren’t in a rush, but if you’re trying to look something up quickly it’s super annoying.

Has deteriorated over time

This was a good and useful app, and I used it regularly, both when planning and making trips to London. However, the recent iterations are full of pop-ups and insistent demands for me to ‘upgrade’ i.e. pay to get rid of the popups. So now I’m uninstalling it.

Ads a real problem in this App

Ads specifically designed so you either can not scroll past them (timed) or it is virtually impossible to minimise them (carefully hidden “x”). I understand the need to earn revenue from advertising from a free app but these ads are forced, full screen, at times the user has no control over and usually just when you need to look at the basic tube map. Old fashioned tube map card in electronic form would be best. Live times basically irrelevant when service operates so regularly. I have transitioned to the formal TFL Transport For London app and will try that.

Great app. Ruined by advertising.

This was a really good app until they added inappropriate advertising content which pops up without giving you chance to see the map.
I’ve now deleted this in favour of ‘friendlier’ apps, which is the opposite of what the developers intended.

Adverts more important than the map

I’ve had this on my phone for years, but it’s become unusable due to ads. Want to know where your going urgently? Don’t bother opening this as you'll get an ad. The ads don’t just go away either, mostly I have to

Killed by the devs greed ~ TFL GO is infinitely better & free with NO ads!

Years ago this was great but it progressively got to be unusable if you want a map in a hurry with big full page ads that are on a timer like it’s some TV show! TFL run their own app now which is excellent has a load of great features and up to the minute info no other third party apps have like broken lifts etc. I know devs need to eat and don’t mind banner ads if it’s putting food on their table but keep away from subscriptions and full page splash screens or it’ll be dumped in the trash with a review to say it ain’t worth it. I was using this before TFL Go came out but now that’s here this is deleted…

FANTASTIC little app

Used this little app on a weekend visit to London. We wanted to avoid walking as much as possible due to a injury.
We just typed where we were and where we wanted to go, down to the individual shop if needed and it gave clear instructions on getting there.
A must have app if you plan to use the underground/tube in London.

The most annoying app I have

The app itself is very good, but the constant adverts that go on for ever is soooo annoying and makes it almost unusable. Yes I could pay to have them removed but why should I for an app to help me get around a rail system I pay a fortune for the privilege of using.
I get some apps have adverts, but they are normally short, and don’t get in they way. This app has ads (for silly games I have no interest in) go on forever, and are very disruptive. They also just send you to the App Store when you try and quit out.
If I could give the zero stars I would.

Ridiculous ads

Forcing people to watch ads when all they want to do is find the best route home should be illegal. These ads have slowed my journey down on a number of occasions it’s ridiculous. You do not need this many ads! The ads aren’t even good! This app is more about ads than helping people. Absolutely pathetic. ‘Just pay for a subscription so you don’t see the ads’. It’s a map app with some little updates like it’s not worth the money. And even if I wanted to subscribe I’d have to wait 5 minutes for the horrible ads to stop.

Used to be good.

Used this app for years. I’m on the free version, so understand that there are ads. But the developer has really over done it with the ads now. They are long, convoluted and seem to be designed to confuse. Takes way too long to get to the journey planner. Can you imagine the frustration if you need the information quickly? Guessing the paid version is better but I don’t use it enough to pay for it. This was a go to app for the occasional times I used it, but now I’m deleting it and using TfL go.

Useful app made unusable by intrusive ads

The tube map app is great. I use it a lot whenever I am in London. However the last several times I’ve tried I get about 10 seconds of use before an ad pops up, usually for some kind of hook up app or a really janky game. It’s virtually impossible to get rid of these ads. You can wait 30 seconds for an X to appear in a random corner but clicking this usually takes you to download the piece of junk. I usually have to force Tubemap to quit and restart so I can get another few seconds of use before another app pops up. Then today I discover tubemap has used 12% of my battery in the background… I haven’t even opened it today… I think it’s time to delete this once great app and find another way to get around in the tube. Gutted.

Cashing in!

I used to love this app. Worked well every time. Had live info and you could open it quickly when needed. Then they introduced ads. Not content with the banners, we now have ads which you can’t close for about a minute, and when you do another bit of the same ad pops up. When you’re on a train and need to look for a route quickly, it’s not only frustrating (you can’t see any close buttons for ages), but you end up missing stops or trains as you can’t figure out where you need to be quickly enough. The past week or so I’ve had the same COOP advert debacle every time I’ve opened it and I’ve had enough. I’ve had this app for years and I'm now going to delete it and look for an alternative. I appreciate developers need to make money to survive and produce quality products, but this feels like they got a new head of advertising in who is tasked with increasing revenue and isn’t thinking about user experience. And reading the recent reviews, it looks like I’m not alone.

Unusable - Constant ads

This app is now practically unusable due to a recent change in adverts. Previously, they were infrequent and brief. Now, they are constant, take up the entire screen, are often in foreign languages so you can’t tell where the close option is, and touching anything but the tiny X that appears takes you out of the app. This used to be an excellent free app which ads you didn’t mind seeing. Now, I can only assume through greed, it’s unusable. Use TFL apps. They’re free and do the exact same thing as this app without subjecting you to constant and intrusive ads.

What the hell is this app anymore?

I got the app a long time ago, when it was just the map. Clean and simple map, nothing else. Exactly what it was built for. Perfect! But now, it’s nothing short of garbage. The app is littered with advertisements; hell, I clicked the contact button which brought up the input to send an email… THEN GOT AN AD ON TOP OF THAT! All I wanted to do was give the developers my personal feedback, but seems I can’t even do that in peace. There’s even a “Shop & Save” browser extension the Tube Map app provides, which gives “shopping deals with Kindred”. Yes that’s right lads, the MAP wants to give you shopping deals and inject itself into your web browser, just to pry on your daily routine just a little more. I’m not sure what happened, whether the developer’s eye pupils have turned into dollar signs or if the app was simply bought out by a money-hungry company, but don’t bother. Stick with the TfL Go app. That’s what I’ll be doing, and I highly recommend everyone else does the same.

Unwanted Safari extension

Not cool. Even if it is deactivated by default this is not acceptable . Now I have found this out l will be testing alternatives. The bus London app has it too, so I’ll be saying goodbye to that as well. As far as I recall I’ve had a premium upgrade to these apps and no others for my London transport needs since they were launched but this is not on.

Good app

Enjoy using the app - TubeMap is a great resource when travelling around London. Lots of good reviews - even if the pop up ads are a bit annoying - but someone has to make a living! I do like the save / shopping feature - which I downloaded - planting a tree for every purchase is something we should all do! Great feature.

Essential for tube travel!

I don't often write app reviews but this app has been a joy to use and is very intuitive.
The feature I use the most is the tube map, which works offline (great for when you're riding with no signal) and means you don't need to stress about where your connection is or whether you're going north/south/east/west when you get there!
Would be much more of a faff to get around without it.

Too many adverts make it useless

This app has now so many pop ups and adverts it’s become useless. The app itself is good but I tend to use it when I’m on the go, to see where my train is, whether it’s better to jump on a line or another and all that is impossible to do when you’re forced to watch an advert first. And no, I’m not going to pay for an as free version because the cost of living in London is sky high, transport costs a fortune and I’m not prepared to add extra costs to that
So I’m going to delete the app and it’s a pity but it’s the same with the bus app, started brilliantly but become impossible to use because of adverts

Very helpful - worth paying for

Had used the free version of this app for a while but the adverts pop up at the most inopportune times, such as whether to go left or right in the warren of tunnels !
Treated myself to the lifetime subscription and can’t wait to see the difference. Now..where is the option that tells you which street exit to use ?

Missing information

I have used the app for a long time but recently the Elizabeth line has been getting pushed. It is quicker but more expensive. I arrived in Heathrow Terminal 2 and searched for a train to Liverpool Street. It gave me the Elizabeth line as the quickest and the bus as the cheapest, but unlike usual route recommendations where it gives an alternative route so you can choose there was no other option. But the compromise route which was ignored was to go via Holborn. It was 15 mins slower but far quicker than the bus and was cheaper than the Elizabeth line. I won’t be using the app anymore.
pushkdurmdkens

Very disruptive ads

I’ve used this app occasionally for years now, but recently they’ve changed it so that the whole screen suddenly gets taken up with an ad. So you’ll be scrolling across the map and an ad appears, so you touch the screen to scroll and then go off to a website for a clothes store that you don’t want to go to, you just want to see where the Elizabeth Line goes…
I understand the value of ads to free-to-use apps, but when they don’t just get in the way, but actually take you away from what you were trying to do, things have gone too far.

No alerts when planning route

I’ve use this app for years and it’s great. Few problems I have with it is that it doesn’t alert to a problem on the tube line when you are planning a journey. It also doesn’t always give you alternative travel options when there are some. This mean that it is imperative that you check the TFL alerts before committing to the journey the app chooses for you. Also worth looking at the map to see if there is another option. Basically, if you know the tubes and your way around London, this app is helpful. If you are a tourist or new to the city, I wouldn’t advise as the app will lead you to believe it has the best option for your journey, when really, you need to do more work yourself to find the right one.

My first review ! Can I rate zero stars?

Imagine someone dying on the side of the road and you have to watch an ad before calling an ambulance. Well, this app is the same, you have to go through endless ads before planning your journey so if you’re on a platform and in the rush, with only seconds before knowing if you should jump on that train or the next, this isn’t the app for you.
Are you, as a navigation app company, aware that a new line was added to TFL? It’s called the Elizabeth line and you had 10 years to plan for it.

Used to be good

This app was wonderful for years, but since lockdown it’s become absolutely unusable. It opens, you start to navigate, but the screen turns into a full page advert for kids games, which you then can’t help but tap - as your finger was already committed. You then panic to find how to get the app back and somehow shut the advert page, before then landing back on the advert again and having to wait what seems like an age for the ‘X’ to appear to close it and get back to the map. Absolutely despicable user experience! This week it has now added a 2nd advert before leaving you alone, to double the deep pain you’re already suffering. And oh look, there goes the train I was looking to get 5 minutes ago.
My advice; get a taxi, walk, get a paper map out even - just avoid this app, life is too short!..

Good app, a few flaws

I have the ad free version - always worth pay a small amount for this, so no intrusive ads etc. Bug 1: if you start the app in landscape mode the map is portrait and you need to rotate the iPad to portrait then back to landscape for the map to correctly render. Bug 2: latest January 2022 update doesn’t show the Moorgate to Oval part as closed (from 15th Jan) I.e. doesn’t render the same as the January 2022 London Underground Tube map.
However typically the main app I use for tube info.

Used to be great - now awful

Constantly popping up notifications I don’t need, then prompt me to buy pro, followed by video adds you have to watch to use it that come on at full volume when you least expect it.
I’d be fine with full screen picture adds or something like that, but this is obnoxious just resulted in me uninstalling it. Might be fine for people who live in London (but then probably know the tube anyway.) for those that visit on occasion this app isn’t any use friendly anymore and your better off just using Google maps

Adverts make you wait 30sec before you can use the app. Directions are bad too.

Terrible ads that you can’t close for 30seconds. You have to close 3 ads in a row, and they don’t have easy to spot “close” buttons, and even when you do find the close button it’s tiny and half the time it thinks you’ve clicked on the ad and takes you to the App Store. I get it, you need to make money from ads, but you’ve pushed it to the point where the app is a chore to use, so I’m deleting and just using TfL app even though your map COULD be better. Just tone it down lads. Also when you click on a station to make a route it uses that station as the start point? Obviously can switch it around easy enough, but just makes me think you’ve put very little effort/consideration into user experience. Also, dodgy route suggestions: searched for Stratford to Boston Manor, it told me the journey was -1105 minutes long (?), and even though it’s 2:30pm now it thought the next option was at 11:33pm. And can’t change time of departure. Got a long way to go to match Google maps capabilities.

Adverts have become ridiculous

Used to be a handy app for the simple purpose of displaying a tube map. Unfortunately it’s become unusable with pop up adverts that take over the full screen with no close buttons.
Alternative apps are available that are better at doing this basic job. Even just having a PDF on your phone!
I wouldn’t mind in-app adverting, but the ones running in the app are intrusive and spammy.

awful beware all commuters

This app is full of long video adverts that play one after the other, i can’t tell you how many times i’ve missed my stop because i’ve had to wait for a video to stop playing, the worst app i’ve ever downloaded, it should be illegal.
i will promptly delete it now, and use a paper tube map instead, what a joke.
steer clear of this app all, they blackmail you to upgrade, shameful, as if we don’t pay enough on the TFL already travelling in to London, they want to make money off the app as well, what an incredulous joke.

Ads completely ruin the experience

I have had this app for many years and have finally had enough of the adverts. It runs the whole experience. There have been so many occasions where I needed to use the app in and emergency but then an advert pops up. Honestly the app is really good but I can not deal with the ads anymore. I’ve now deleted the app because it’s just ridiculous. The adverts have just progressively become worse.

Needs an update…

Needs to be updated for Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms on the Northern Line. Day one and they are not there… This is a very useful app, you can look at rail stations as well as tube lines. Have used it a lot over the years but the ads have got longer and more annoying. You used to be able to clear them easily but now there are some you are forced to watch all the way through, which is very annoying. I may look around to see what other apps are available…

Good app but ads are so frustrating!

It’s a tube map. With line status. So it’s very handy. BUT... the ads are infuriating!!! usually I’m looking at the map for urgent info - and a 30s ad pops up which you can’t get away from! I realise they need to make money but really this stops me using the app and I’m on AppStore looking for an alternative.
Update: I’m deleting this app because the ads get in the way of usability. The close button is intentionally small. They run for a set time so is you’re in a rush it’s game over. Can’t believe I stuck with this app as long as I did. Have just found an add-free alternative. Phew!!!

The adds are killing!

This used to be great, open the app and find out if your train is coming in seconds.
Now, you have to wait a minute until some stupid advert plays out. I understand it’s a money thing but every other app, you are able to cancel the advert within seconds. We move fast in London and we need an app that allows us to do that, choose which way to go before it’s too late.

The pop up ads make it unusable

This used to be my go-to app, for years I relied on this to navigate around London. However, recently it has become completely unusable due to pop up ads which take 30 sec or more to close. They pop up at the most irritating moments - when I’m lost, trying to figure out how to get home, or trying to find another way to get to work - and it’s impossible to close them. Several times I have missed a connection or a bus, been stranded in the rain because the stupid ads wouldn’t close and I couldn’t see the route I needed. £9.99 a year is extortionate to pay for the ad-free version. So I am deleting this app and advise that you do too. Seriously, don’t bother with it - use City Mapper instead

Useful but.....

1- I find it ridiculous that the maps load only in portrait mode! Even to write this review I had to flip the tablet to panorama yet the maps can only be viewed in portrait. It wastes so much screen space and we must zoom to see the detail.
2- Adverts are totally intrusive and should not have sound (this is mainly a reading app).
3- If these issues were resolved I would definitely consider buying a subscription.
It is a shame that I have to write this review. I would have rather contacted the developers directly and make a decision about purchasing or not.

Route planning - usability

When you click on a station where you want to travel, it sets it as point A, instead of setting it as a point B. It’s common sense that if one were to search for the station - that’s where they want to get to! Instead, it requires additional click to swap the points A and B. Also, you’ve hidden the option “route” in one of the recent updates, it now requires several clicks to plan a route. Just add a long press option or something similar to bring up the select route option, so that it can be done in 2 clicks, not 20! It’s not that hard to do?
Finally, there’s no option to customise the route, e.g. go via a specific station. Notification times - no way to pick specific hours.

Full screen ads on a map!?? Consider this app £4 not free then :/

I don’t like the fact that removing ads costs £3.99 - being ad-free should be an essential feature. This app isn’t TfL’s only revenue stream so if they cannot fund its development or maintenance then there’s got to be other ways to get the money needed than to throw in frequent, full-screen ads! Seems extremely excessive and seriously harms the functionality of the app. I’d rather have my sanity and be able to use a map without my screen blocked every couple of seconds so I ended up ponying up the £3.99 😕

New version introduced intrusive ad!

I used this app a lot before to find my way around London but recent new version introduced a very annoying ad which would suddenly pop up completely cover what you are looking at, usually at the worst time, making me feel like deleting this app immediately from my phone.

Essential for any Tube traveller

I really rate this App, the journey planner is great, particularly the indicator for which carriage to be in for exit at interchange and destination - if TFL were to number carriages or the platform (Virgin Trains did this) as well as indicating the direction of travel life would be even easier in terms of knowing where to head for on the platform.
I also like the station status and updates, great for figuring out when to head to the station for minimal waiting time, I am slightly spoilt as my nearest tube station is 2 minutes walk away.
Enhancements I would like would be for the map to automatically centre the station I am closest to. Also indicate when empty trains are scheduled, again slightly spoilt by being close to Northfields tube station which is the start point for a couple of Eastbound services most hours of the day.
If you are a transport geek the little nuggets about each station are great, I had never noticed the painted columns at my nearest station that acknowledge the local football team until I read about it in the app.

Useless precision on push alerts

I used to like this app very much, until the push-alerts were made useless. Today you can only chose to get push notifications for very large time intervals (many many hours). Most commuters know within a very narrow time interval when they will travel. Turning on notifications means that you will be spammed with notifications many hours before and after your actual travel. As a result, I have been forced to switch the notifications off. As this was the only feature of this app adding value for me, I’m sad to say the value is gone.

IF YOU’RE IN LONDON YOU NEED THIS

Went to London for a weekend and legit used this every day we were there. Used it for every journey we made as it’s so helpful and clear where you need to go and which tubes you need to take for your journey. We probably would’ve been lost if we didn’t have this app with us. The fact it works fluid with an advert popping up once in a blue moon was well worth the download. It’s so easy to navigate around, you choose where you want to go from which station and it tells you the tubes to jump on with the colour coordination etc. Absolutely fantastic app for the tourist of London and the Underground. Thankyou for making my weekend easy!

Expensive

The app is only useful and enjoyable to use if you pay for the full pack. It’s quite expensive at around £13 but at least it’s a one time purchase. Now, there is missing Tube Carriage data that tells you which carriage to board and disembark for quickest exits and quickest transfer routes (especially Northern Line) How you can you expect someone to pay for something they are not getting? Furthermore, some carriage information incorrect. (Might be due to station changes).
Would be nice to have a Dark Mode or at least for those that have paid.

Really good if you pay extra for it...

The app is really useful and super helpful after it’s gone through the whole advert thing. If you don’t pay for the extras it’s pretty un-useable. I would have to wait a minute or two for the ad to fully load wait for it to finish then close to be able to search anything. If you’re already underground then forget about it, the app takes what seems like forever trying to connect to a network so it can show you the ad, but it can’t coz you’re underground but it just keeps trying coz if you want a good user experience you have to pay for it. In my opinion these guys know exactly what they’re doing, make a good app not work unless you pay for it. It wouldn’t annoy me as much if it was just a pay for app, but they try and pass it off as a free app but it’s not really the case.

Best app now worst

Really good app that I use every day but features that were previously available for free are now needing to be paid for. I completely understand if they did this to gain some extra cash to keep the app running up surely they get more than enough from the ridiculous amount of adverts now on the app that make it irritating and unusable. City Mapper is a much better all round travel app now.
Bye tube map app...you’ve been like an average girlfriend... you were once so great but now just wanting more cash and immensely irritating.

Good - but doesn’t show early morning real-time

Is helpful for planning - but in terms of actual timetable planning very poor.
On district line this morning was planning the route to Liverpool St and it was saying that first train was at 0604 when all posters indicate first train times. Developers comment of works with TfL love time is incorrect as I went on TfL and got the exact timing of the train.
Also, the “extra” you get with Premium really isn’t worth it on the tube app. Paid the £8.99 and all I’ve seen a difference is I get which carriage to go into to speed the journey up.

Very Helpful App

I use this app all the time and find it really useful to check routes and find out how long it will take to get somewhere. But it doesn’t always figure out the best route, especially with regard to changes. I live in Brixton and it often makes sense to switch to the Northern Line st Stockwell, only across the platform, but it never suggests this. Same deal with regard to Green Park, an awful place to change, there might be a route with more changes but much easier ones but it doesn’t take this into account

Adverts make it unusable

Picture this, your standing on a platform and a train is rolling in. You’re not sure if you should get on the train or wait for the next.
You flick to the tube map app to check the map and instead of a map a full-screen advert pops up, stopping the song you were listening to, and you have to wait 5 seconds before you can close the ad, which is for some silly game you’d never want to play anyway.
In the meantime you’ve missed your train and should have just downloaded a photo of the tube map to you favourite photos so it’s quick and easy to find.

Great, but a few tweaks could be invaluable

Great app, but £3.99 each for one extra, when you don’t need the bundle, I think is a bit of a Mickey take, particularly the tube exits one. It would be nice to have the available exits and which one is best for where on street level, from the tube STATION as opposed to which carriage to get off at, especially for stations like Charing Cross, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus which have numerous exits into the street. This doesn’t change, so I would imagine it wouldn’t be that hard to integrate.

GUI could be improved.

The map is the map - a classic of transportation design. All good so far. The updates on services are a benefit - when you want them. But an irritation to figure out how to stop them when you don’t! Is the ‘Star’ on or off? Seems whatever I do, the alerts keep interrupting even when the App is closed.
If you just want a map then it’s fine - but a better designed GUI for the options would be appreciated. My review is for the free version.

A good app made unusable by ads

I’ve been using this app for a while, and while I’m fine with adverts in exchange for a free app, in this case the ads have made it too frustrating to use. When I open the app, I have to accept that it will stay frozen in one place on the map screen for sometimes 20 seconds, THEN load a full screen advert, and eventually an X will appear on the ad for me to close and use it. I often have to check the map in a hurry, and unfortunately I can’t do that any more with this app.

If you travel in London - you need this.

The developers and the designers should be proud. It’s clean, crisp, simple to use, evidence of good ux design. The fact that you can download the app from the same developer for other countries that have metros and use it without freaking out is amazing.
Thank you for making our lives a little easier, especially those of us who tend to get lost easily.

Essential if you're traveling on the Tube!

This is single-handedly the best app to use in London. If you buy the premium version (which I recommend you do) it allows you to find your way between stops just by putting in the start and end stations, detailing which line you need and in which direction. It's ridiculously simple to use and works offline so there's no need to worry about data usage. I can't recommend this enough.

In-app purchases - update!

I was frustrated with not getting what was promised when I bought in-app upgrades, and left a poor rating. Within 24 hours I had a response with an explanation of how to find the information I was looking for - now it makes sense! Excellent features and response; I've held back one star as I feel that ideally I should be able to find the information on my own. Still, I've tried the app with my new knowledge and it works :)
