My essential dictionary

I am so pleased to have found this after coping with a variety of dictionary books for many years.
My Damascene moment was two years ago whilst on a short Italian language course in Florence. Imagine me, fumbling through my my pocket tourist dictionary and failing miserably to keep up with the rest of the class! I am 70+, my colleagues, all 20-30 ish were all managing to keep up with our teacher's carefully spoken Italian, by doing some magical thing on their phones.
I soon discovered their secret! Now I have used this superb app ever since. It is so useful on a daily basis for reading and also in conjunction with my studies on Duolingo.
My grateful thanks go to all who have been involved with producing it.

Great Resource

Really useful for travelling. Very easy to look up a word/phrase in either language. Easy to cross reference. Makes learning Italian easier by helping to add a few relevant words of vocabulary each day.

Extremely useful.

Extremely useful tool when learning italian. Look up any word and the meanings appear with numerous contextual examples,
verb conjugations and audio for pronunciation. The last item could be better and the volume of content could be greater - as one would expect the difference between dictionaries of different sizes.

Excellent resource

This is a comprehensive dictionary which will be an excellent companion for both beginners and advanced users. If a particular word isn't in the dictionary, it takes you to an external link so you always find what you need one way or another.
The ability to add your own notes to dictionary entries is extremely useful, for example if there's a particular idiom you wish to add.
The verb tables are also an extremely useful feature.
My only two observations are that I would like to see the imperative form included in the verb tables; and I want to be able to add new words that I find. These are not serious drawbacks and I think it merits the full five stars.

Really great dictionary/teacher

I've tried quite a few dictionary apps and find this to be the best. The inclusion of all the verb conjugations is very helpful and all the different usage examples given are great. Really happy with it.

great for verbs but

The dictionary recognises conjugated verbs, which is amazing. Verb conjugations are great, with all tenses displayed in the same screen. Both dictionary words and conjugated verbs can be played as sound. The phrases feature, however, while being a good concept, is implemented very poorly.

Pretty good!

Usually gives a range of uses for individual words to put them into context, which is particularly helpful, even though not exhaustive. Verb conjugations are also handy. Useful for checking things I'd forgotten, not so good for looking up obscure new words I come across when reading.

Brilliant dictionary.

This is a great little app. It does so much. It pronounces the words, conjugates verbs and you can even look up something the case of a verb (eg past participle) and it will give you the infinitive. Very useful. And it even has a quiz. Don't hesitate: buy it!

Yet again I see that my inept interpretation of the 'Star system' in the reviewing procedure has failed to properly represent my high estimation of this product. I say again that I unequivocally rate it as FIVE star. And here is why:
I installed the App. some three or four years ago and I have been using it 'on the go' to translate the words I have been encountering in my daily living here in Italy's Tuscany. In the grocers and the green grocers and the bar and the hardware store it has regularly come to my aid. But in recent weeks I have embarked on the long journey towards becoming fluent in the Italian language.
So it is now that I have come to appreciate, admire and applause the true power of this App. Beyond the simple translation Eng/It/Eng is a range of most helpful aids: with an Internet connection the chance to HEAR the word pronounced accurately; without an Internet connection: a comprehensive list of the meaning of the word in the different contexts in which it can be used; by highlighting any verb the COMPLETE conjugation of the verb in the fourteen tenses of Italian and the twelve tenses of English; and MOST HELPFUL, a comprehensive list of examples of the chosen word as it is used in everyday speech and script.
FIVE Star!! I would give it more!
I have been using the recently updated version for a little over a week now and I can heartily endorse my earlier praise for this app. and add that I am finding the extra features even more helpful while I am using it intensively every day. The revised format presents the definitions and examples of the word in differing contexts more clearly and very easy for the eye to follow. The revised layout is easier to use, especially the relocating of the 'history' icon. I generally use the app. off-line and I have a comprehensive dictionary to help me out for the occasional word not included. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover the offer of an automatic link to "WordReference.com" the instant I typed in a word not listed in the app. earlier this afternoon.
I am using this app. intensively on a daily basis. It has become a very valuable and trusted friend to me as I tackle the long task of learning the Italian language.

An excellent App! Easy to carry around on iPad when travelling and needing instant translation, or for browsing and learning. Voice activation for dictionary is very useful, and complete verb tenses make this a great purchase!

Useful

Some of the negative reviews are far too harsh. To say this ap is 'useless' is absurd. I use it in conjunction with google translate which is good for idiomatic phraseology but sometimes makes odd mistakes. This is a basic and inexpensive mobile dictionary. As it cost less than the physical dictionary I use I accept that it is not absolutely comprehensive.
I expect that the developers are looking to constantly improve that aspect. I would suggest more detailed definitions with examples to ensure more idiomatic accuracy.
Update: seems improved with a bit more detail. Examples (as requested above!) now included.
Now I would suggest making the verb conjugations more comprehensive - include gerunds (andando - going) - not difficult to work out but would help beginners.

Italian dictionary

I would have given this App 5 star rating BUT I am constantly losing the text to speech aspect, in fact, I have only had it working once. I have deinstalled and reinstalled and done all that was suggested but still silence.
This is frustratingl to say the least, and since date of trip to Italy is creeping nearer and nearer the need to use the fully functioning App is vital. Ciao

A mess

The free version convinced me to buy this, but unbelievably the paid version actually has LESS features! There is an entire section dedicated to conjugating verbs, but no way to find the translated equivalent or even the untranslated version if you don't know the proper verb name. For example, if you try to look up 'ho' ('i have') there is NO WAY to find out what it means!
This app seems to have the data to one day be useful, but the user experience is atrocious - I would honestly believe that no one who is not already competent in both languages has ever used it. In summary, this app has so far been unable to work either as a learning tool or as a point of reference; save yourself the money and type what you want to know into google

I bought this Ap after downloading the free version and I wish I had not bothered. The full version hype in the advert does not deliver, I expected for the price to get Audio Translations or at least phonetically written ones of the Italian words, but got neither. All in all a very poor quality product.
