Terrible refund policy.

Bought a £9.10 return ticket for a train which was subsequently cancelled - a refund takes 2-5 working days and they trouser a £7 “admin fee”!
Nowhere on their website to complain about this, just a link-tree of different automated responses. What a rip-off.

I tried rebooking my ticket via the app before my departure but it was literally impossible. I tried two different devices and website and the page kept crashing. ‘Manage ticket’ function simply doesn’t work, at least not for LNER.
I ended up having to spend another £70 for a ticket because of this lag.
Also emails train line sends with an option to add the ticket to the app not always work.
From now on I’ll only buy tickets directly with train operators, as there is no support when buying from third party (trainline).
2 stars as the service is still useful to check available connections otherwise would be 1.

Why paper tickets still exist for trains, idk. Why Trainline sells paper tickets, idk. Why Trainline sells paper tickets for journeys that begin at a station that DOES NOT HAVE A PAPER TICKET MACHINE, idk. Why Trainline expects you to send paper tickets back to get a £3.30 refund for a journey that you did not go on due a cancellation, idk. Idiotic.

Several times lately it will show an error ‘no trains available’, a few have them have been during strikes which could have made me alter my travel plans unnecessarily. I had to download a competitor app to book my train, when your app literally has one job this is unacceptable.
The UI is also pretty terrible, when you buy a train ticket it would be great if it showed the next train time and platform for that ticket somewhere on that page, currently you need to the run another search instead. Useless. Having used Trainline for as long ad it has been running, I won’t be using it again. In the last few months the app has let me down repeatedly, and the design is getting worse over time.

The app itself is good. It’s easy to book trains. However, you’ll never get a refund from this company if your train is delayed, cancelled, or they themselves make an error. I’ve stopped using the app after a couple of instances where they wouldn’t refund me £100s - even when I paid extra for travel insurance. My advice would be to use it for short journeys, but book expensive journeys through a more reputable company.

The app would be much better if you could access historic tickets from within the app. This would make claiming compensation from delayed train much easier.
Currently the user experience isn’t great, you don’t get a copy of the ticket in an confirmation email, and you just get a link to the app, which doesn’t contain the ticket. You have to long on to the website, which automatically opens the app, and today the website isn’t even working at all.
Not great.

You can set them up no problem, but try and make changes to the favourite or delete it and you get “Sorry - couldn’t make changes to this favourite - please try again later. Trainline are thieves. Multiple times, when I have booked through Trainline, my train has been cancelled and it is impossible to obtain a refund through the app unless you want to only be refunded half the price of the ticket or less, as they take off so much money off in admin fees. Even if you contact them directly to get a full refund, they will not refund the booking fee for cancelled services. While the booking fee is not generally a lot, if you get trains frequently like I do, and considering how often the get cancelled, it will really add up. Even if 1 train gets cancelled per week, you could easily be giving Trainline £30-£50 a year without even travelling. This experience has happened to be too many times now, I will be deleting the app and only booking through Trainpal or the train companies directly.

Useless - charging money for nothing!

Rubbish app doesn’t have the correct up to date information so selling tickets for services that aren’t running! Then they mug you off and say its not their problem and you’ll have to chase the rail company for a refund. Trainline charges money for its ticket selling service. Of course it had a responsibility to ensure the tickets it is selling are valid. If it is selling people tickets they can’t use, it shouldn’t be in business.
Yeah - developer response - planned engineering works are planned months in advance and the train operators make this info public - it isn’t a secret! Trainline is provided with the information, just doesn’t ensure the information is available to customers. Why tell people the service isn’t running when you can sell them a ticket, charge a service fee on top, and then tell them its not your problem they need to chase the train operator. Clearly Trainline doesn’t understand consumer contract law as well as train time tables - should really get put out of business :-/

Awful Customer Service and They Removed Free Exchange Policy without Notification

 –
DafyddSS
 –
2023-10-22
Trainline used to have a fee free exchange policy for advanced tickets but they secretly removed it in September without any notification on their website or on the app. I usually buy more tickets than I need for flexibility, and then change them the day before traveling if I don’t feel like commuting the next day. I found out this month that they are charging £15 per round trip for exchange and now I am forced to go into the office to utilize my tickets. Total lost is around £200.
You can’t even find their customer service email on their website and I had to find it via google. The team is obviously based offshore as all their emails were sent at 3am. They don’t have a complaint procedure and no matter what you say, their response is always a polite fxxx off.
The only reason I used this app and paid booking fee is because they provide free exchange, now that the policy is gone and I’ve had such a bad experience dealing with them, I will not use them again. I am sure there are some other apps that don’t charge booking fee and have lower exchange cost. TrainPal is a good alternative for now. I’ve told everyone around me about this and everyone who was using Trainline are switching to other apps like TrainPal.

I used to use this app for my daily commute and had no issues with it. It was great for quickly checking prices and train times. Now it is a hot mess that only works 1/5 times. When I do open the app without it immediately crashing it takes 39 seconds to load properly and then another minute of no buttons working when i’m trying to enter my destinations. Oh and then if it didn’t crash at first it does then. I used to be able to open my app in under 10 seconds and show my ticket with ease but now it takes about 3 minutes and lots of impatient train inspectors having to walk away and come back to me because this app made to help people with their journeys only seems to make them worse! Until they fix the bugs and the lag they’ve lost a customer- for one of the most used apps you’d think they’d have a decent development team??? clearly i set my expectations too high.

My default way of travelling by rail

 –
.: Stez :.
 –
2023-07-24
I’ve been using Trainline for a number of years to buy my tickets for rail travel throughout the UK. It didn’t take much to surpass National Rail Enquiries. The app has been solid over the years with handy features being introduced to make life a bit easier like ‘Favourites’ for repeat journeys and adding support for Split tickets.
It seems that a few things are broken at this time for me in the app, however. The Favourites tab doesn’t seem to load and appears broken. I also can’t send feedback within the Account section as tapping the menu item doesn’t do anything.
Apart from those two things, the app’s UX is far better than other rail ticket apps I’ve tried by my estimations. There are little distractions or annoying pop ups that get in your way and adding Split Tickets to your Apple Wallet is easy and quick.
I do hope that the My Tickets screen could be redesigned however as it appears too cluttered for my tastes when you have more than one journey for the week. A few options could be hidden behind a tap at least to save space.

Book your tickets from the train line company itself don’t use Trainline I’ve been using Trainline for 5 years without any issues they have a summary of my bookings which exceed 150+ or 200+ bookings I booked a train for my parents and were humiliated in front of everyone because other people had the same seat and we were forced to leave the seats my issue isn’t with standing which I don’t mind but I had two sick parents with me who were forced to stand when confronting Trainline and asking them for a refund they reply by it’s not there issue they booked me seats for one stop and then for the rest hour and a half of the train it was fully booked and they still booked us the train. At least have the decency to apologise they just told me they can’t do anything about it nothing else we had to deal with it.

Every negative review here seems to be because people are making errors when ordering and then kicking up a fuss that Trainline aren’t keen to rectify user errors. That’s annoying, but it’s true of literally every company. You don’t buy food in a shop, walk out and then go back in and say ‘I want my money back I bought the wrong food’.
I find this app incredibly useful when compared to the archaic National Rail one.
Tickets come through on mobile immediately, I can use Apple Pay, there are reminders about upcoming journeys and changes to them, platforms etc… besides cheaper trains; I don’t really know what else anybody could ask for.
I have no functionality issues and I appreciate some people might. But to question customer service on an app that makes travel pretty seamless assuming you put in the right details is beyond petty.
If you know how to use a phone; you won’t regret using it.

I always used to use national rail but lately the app and website haven’t been working for me properly - today for example, I found a journey I wanted but when I tried to purchase said tickets it suddenly wanted to send me on a different route and at double the price!
I have to be a little picky about my journey as I have a toddler in a buggy to consider so I had already ensured I’d be able to use a lift etc at the first tickets stations.
Checked the same journey on Trainline and within 30 seconds I have it all booked and the tickets saved to my apple wallet so I don’t even need to worry about losing my tickets!
I won’t go back to national rail, it’s just not worth the hassle.

Please STOP sending me emails telling me I have a train journey coming up. I know! I put it in my calendar which reminds me. I also know I’m going away naturally. I don’t need emails from Trainline telling me I’m going on a train. Absolutely shocking who thinks that’s a good idea badgering customers!?!? And there’s no way of turning it off!
App just hangs on first opening screen when first opened. Crashes to springboard. Then have to open again. Can’t download train tickets to apple wallet. No one at Trainline cares to do anything. You can always judge a company on how they deal with problems and complaints. Can’t add two for one railcard to apple wallet so forces user to use the app instead of apple wallet , apple wallet is way more streamlined and automatically shows passes and travel on the day. Favourites are useless as adding journeys only shows the price etc for one person not two. So totally useless. It saves you money is just about the only saving grace of this app.

The app saves whatever destination you previously put in for ticket. Accidentally bought a ticket for destination B to A instead of A to B. Used the return ticket on my journey there. Customer service stated I cannot get a journey back to destination B as I have already used the return ticket. Costumer service are uncooperative, cold, loud, rude and started yelling at me through the phone. Their costumer service are located in Indian. Do not expect the greatest level of English speakers to answer your call which is also rated at 2p/min.
Forced to pay for another ticket from B to A home even though my first ticket was never used.
Download whatever respective train service app their is available as this app doesn’t provide any lower of a price the other ones do.

Bike reservation system broken

TLDR: Don’t book bike reservations through Trainline
I booked tickets with bike reservations on trainline for an Avanti West route. When I went to redeem the bike reservation ticket before my train, Avanti West had no record of my bike reservation. I ended up missing my train and getting put on a later train (thanks to the help of the train staff). I called Trainline support about this issue after the fact to hopefully avoid this for my return trip. The rep said that my bike reservation was in fact booked and that I wouldn’t need to worry. Three days later, the same thing happens again and I get put on a train two hours later. This seems to be known problem — the Avanti agent claimed it happens over 30 times a week and has been this way for a while!
Given that this part of Trainline is clearly broken and incorrectly reserving bike spaces, Trainline should remove bike reservation functionality to avoid headaches like mine or contact Avanti and other train lines to resolve this issue.

I contacted support after I bought 4 of the wrong tickets asking for a refund which they refused because the tickets had been scanned but by a guard I never went through the gates but apparently they couldn’t do it but I said that I had t used it and they still refused and they said they needed confirmation from southwestern railways so I contacted them and they said they’d call Trainline who did t pick up so they sent an email I then contacted Trainline again who denied receiving the email so I called swr and they said Trainline had even sent them a confirmation email saying they had received it and told me the even specified that my tickets should be refunded no matter what so I went back to Trainline who denied it again and kept saying my ticket had been scanned so I called swr again and they looked at the email and then Trainline finally responded to them agreeing to refund my tickets. I have never struggled with a support service this much especially considering I was fully in the right to receive a refund on these tickets I hope nobody else has to deal with them in the future as they are extremely uncooperative and helpful always asking the same questions and not listening to what you say

Apple Watch app not working

The Apple Watch app is not currently working. I have a business and personal account for tickets, when I’m logged into one account with no bookings on it, the Apple Watch app shows as “no upcoming trips” which is correct. But when logging into an account where I have purchased tickets, the Apple Watch app opens with a blank black screen, then closes immediately. I initially thought this was due to the app not working with one of the accounts, I contacted Trainline through the chat function and had all of my tickets and railcard transferred to the other account that the Apple Watch app was working with, which before was showing as “no upcoming trips”, but now this account opens with a blank black screen on the watch and closes immediately. It looks as though whatever account has trips/tickets associated with it, will not open or work on the Watch app. This is very disappointing but I hope it’s fixed soon.

I bought a few tickets… ok. My settings always the same: adult/child and open return. I bought tickets to Bath — but unbeknownst to me, Trainline ignored “open return” and took money for utterly useless “day return” tickets. My daughter and I arrived in Bath at 4pm… stayed two days, and then when we tried to get the train home discovered what we had been sold: useless expensive tickets. Nearly an hour on the phone. They care nothing for customers. Then the inevitable: I had to buy new expensive single tickets home. Not a £60 trip, £100+. Its like saying I’d like to buy a cake, they give you and bag that you take home, but its bread. They sell what they have, regardless of what you ask for.
Trainline have replied. Blaming the customer: with app firmly set to Open Return. Always set to Open Return. Every previous purchase an Open Return. Never expecting anything except Open Return. But sold a Day Return??? To Bath? Arriving at 3pm? What use are those tickets? They cannot be used.

Trainline is great, been using it for years. Tickets are cheaper than buying at the station. But it doesn’t take into consideration the strike situation, especially when booking connecting journeys. For example today I booked a journey from Farnborough to Finsbury, the last part of the journey is a tube ride from London Victoria to Finsbury Park. But there is no Victoria line service today due to strike. So I had to make last minute changes and delayed my journey for at least 30 min. Given that strikes in the UK are happening more and more often, it makes sense for Trainline to adapt to that.

I am beyond furious with the Trainline app. I have never encountered such a terrible and unreliable app in my life.
I was trying to buy train tickets for an important trip, and the app kept crashing. It was so slow, and it was impossible to navigate. I was on the phone with their customer service for an hour, and they were no help. They kept blaming my phone and internet connection, but I have a brand new phone and a great connection.
I ended up missing the train I wanted to take because of this app and had to pay extra for a different one. To top it off, I was charged twice for the same tickets, and customer service was no help with that either. I spent hours on the phone trying to get my money back. I will never use this app again, and I advise anyone else to stay far away from it. It's a complete waste of time and money. Zero stars.

I had to cancel my return trip to Cardiff today because commuters had filled up the limited spaces in Lydney. The app could have informed me of the risk of the car park being full up at the time of arrival and informed me of alternative car parks nearby for me to use (as Lydney had failed to expand their car park or build another site), so that my trip would not have been wasted. I received my refund for my last minute cancellation but would have appreciated an earlier heads up so my plans wouldn’t have been scarpered. The app is streamlined useful, fast and very informative on ticket options, but need travel and parking information to go with it!

Good app. Needs one more tweak to make it 5 stars

This app works well, allows easy planning of journeys and breaks down trips into easy steps. Also the storing of appropriate railcards is excellent.
One thing that would be a real boon would be the ability to book with your own railcard and that of someone travelling with you. Recently my wife and I, who both have senior railcards booked a trip to Liverpool. I couldn’t include her railcard on my booking which meant she had to book separately and so we got reserved seats in two different coaches. If there already is a way of doing this I’d like to know as it’s a bit of an omission otherwise.

I have not managed to buy a ticket on the Trainline app or website for well over a 1.5yrs. Every single time I try, either on the app or website, no matter which payment method I use or how many times I reinstall, restart, wipe and re-enter my payment details, I get an error - the current one says ‘this is awkward’ whereas the earlier one was an ‘oops’. I am glad I don’t have to use the train as much as I used to, because I’m forced to fork out full price at the ticket machine instead of saving money, every single time.
Clearly there is a serious problem somewhere deep within the server that affects individual accounts, given I’m not the only one having issues but others can buy tickets no problem. Goodbye Trainline, I will be deleting my now-useless account because it’s obvious this is an issue which will never be investigated or fixed. (I have contacted customer support about this several times already but it’s clear nothing has been done).

Serious Problem with changes of trains

I have used this app for a long time and was my most favourite app in travels- unfortunately recent changes have some serious flows-particularly for off peak return tickets - if you have a connecting trains and your ticket was checked at first train it is marked as used on the app and when you go to next train connecting train the conductor doesn’t accept the ticket as it says it was used - this is particularly problem if for off peak return and your train is different than the one printed on the ticket, please look into that, I experienced it on my journey to London- I bought the off peak return ticket- hot on my connecting local train - which is half an hour- the ticket was checked and marked as used- than I took my main train to London- the conductor didn’t accept the ticket saying it was used- I had to buy a new ticket- similar problem happened on the way back as well- I hope this is a glitch in the software and you can sorted it soon- it is a shame to ruin such a lovely app with this nonsense, thank you

Hi Trainline, on the days your app works I’d say it’s the best on the market, but over the last year (with updates) I’d say it’s failed more often than not.
I’ve not been able to search or buy tickets because “oops, somethings gone wrong on our end” or I’ve not been able to open a bought ticket because “ oops, somethings gone wrong on our end” or I’ve not even been able to open the help section because .. well in this case nothing happens.
Irritatingly you come to rely on an app like Trainline to emergency purchase tickets because it’s quicker and better than going to a booth or buying via the website but that means when it fails it’s the most frustrating thing ever.
As a fellow Product Manager - please introduce reliability into your Production application. It needs to work every time for the most basic of tasks - like buying a ticket. Thank you very much.

I’ve used trainline for a few years with no problems but my most recent experience has been a nightmare.
I purchased a £70 senior railcard on 1 September for a £160 rail journey on 9 September. I checked up after a few days later booking a short journey which told me I had no railcard only notifying me that my old card had expired. Fine I’ll sort it out with customer services. What a joke. What customer services. This is my only means of lodging a complaint. Nowhere did I find a means of emailing or phoning trainline. Any other method just ended up in circles or wanted me to buy a railcard. I have an email confirmation, the transaction appears in my bank statement and it also appears in my Apple Pay. But none of this is evidence of purchase. So I travel on Friday having to pay the £80 discount back on my ticket and £70 out of pocket for the invisible senior railcard. And I’m buying another railcard from a different company.
I will either be complaining to the ombudsman or taking trainline to court as I can’t even get a refund! I’m 76 and can do without this hassle. So Goodbye trainline. You are useless and thieves. I do hope someone t trainline reads this and reaches out to help me. Pensioners can’t afford to throw away £150.

I’ve just recently started using Trainline. The website is so easy to use, lots of different options, times , prices. So easy to book and manage.
I’ve just bought the family discount ticket, what a massive difference in prices. Not sure why the family rail card are so cheap with a massive 33% discount on all tickets. But thank you , it’s made such a huge difference for us. It’s given us lots of opportunities to travel now, family days out . It’s brilliant just brilliant, with lots of people on tight budgets and bet it’s been a god send for all. I do drive but too nervous to drive on motorways, this has given us some freedom to do some really fun trips . Thank you 🙏

This is actually one of the worst apps I have ever downloaded. So Inconvenient, the website says there’s buttons you can press on the app that don’t exist, Can’t change my advance single train time. It requires me to have a transaction ID ready before contacting them, which can only be found on the expense receipt, FORCING you to close down that window on your phone to go open the expense receipt only to realise you can’t even copy that 12-digit number and so you must memorize it (obviously) until you open up the page again and put it in.
When asking for a refund they will also burden for every transaction detail and personal info you can imagine before conveniently telling you “sorry we only manage bookings, for refunds please contact the train company which you took e.g. GWR or whatever”.
In short, this app is horrible.

Recent updates have made it hardFor me to find my favourite journey tickets. When you go to favourites you are now pushed through a process of confirming which time is your travel, which many London commuters will know is not something that’s fixed. So your tend to buy the most flexible ‘any time’ ticket -you don’t wanna be forced through this process of selecting train times.
Previous version was easier to find my favourite journey and the buy same type of ticket. But in fact even that could be made easier – i.e. a same again? Button
But generally this app is much better than the other train ticket apps - nice easy interface with Apple Pay, don’t force you to log in each time etc.

Watch out for overbooking or selling off peak 1st class without seat reservation

1st class standing

2022-06-05
Mostly, the Trainline is ok. But for that one time that they mess up, I have to give a 1 star rating. Just had a chat with the train guard who listed multiple problems he encountered with Trainline customers.
Don’t buy an off peak 1st class without confirmation of seat reservation. Trainline state that “seat reservations are subject to availability “ but selling 1st class tickets without guarantee of a seat is in my opinion, a rip off. I won’t use them again due to this bad experience of having to stand up from Berwick upon tween to London kings cross. I’ll book direct. The customer chat line tried to say it’s LNERs problem, while LNER say it’s the Trainlines, as they are my service provider. Trainline should never sell any 1st class tickets without confirmation of a seat, off peak or otherwise. And I think that their “subject to availability “ clause is an excuse to get out of careless over selling of seats.

No way of cancelling mistaken tickets if the ticket is marked as non refundable which goes against consumer law, there should at least be a short cooling off period especially when mistakes happen with technology so easily. Tried to get a refund after talking to an agent which they accepted but it turns out I later scanned the mistaken ticket by accident (because I had another identical ticket in my tickets) so they only gave me £15 out of £61. If I’ve asked to cancel and refund a ticket it shouldn’t even be visible in my app nor scannable, yet they use a 24 hour processing excuse. Now because of a simple mistake I’ve lost a massive £45 on a ticket I didn’t need alongside cost of living increases. Trainline takes no responsibility for their unlawful non refundable ticket policy nor their terrible app that takes so long to process cancellations and gives you the chance to accidentally use a ticket which rejects any refund you could have gotten that they promised to give. Useless customer service as they just blame it on their system despite promising a refund that they can’t follow through on and refusing to take any responsibility for their flawed app and policies. Never using this app again.

You Will Lose Money if You Use This App

If you use this app to buy an open return, and let’s say, you accidentally buy a day return you’ve just lost money.
The train workers will not help you because you used a third party app to buy the ticket. Bare in mind, if you bought the wrong tickets using machine however, they will be more than happy to help, and you can easily change your tickets.
Another feature of this app that makes you lose money, is if you filter tickets to open returns only, this app will STILL always advertise you prices for day returns. What is the purpose of this? To lure you into buying the wrong ticket I reckon. It will sneakily display the open returns (THE TICKET YOU ACTUALLY WANT) underneath. Hello trainline, I don’t want day returns I want open ones, that’s why I used the bloody filter.
This app is hilarious, you request a refund and they expect you to put your tickets into an envelope, seal it shut, go to a post office, send them to Edinburg, THEN wait 5 days for 70% of your money back. I’m sorry what century are we in? The 1800s? This long winded refund method is a sneaky technique to deter people from getting refunds.
I think it will be easier for me to just delete this app, never use it again, and buy my tickets from a machine or the official south west train app. Thanks for making me waste money😊

There is absolutely nothing good about train line. I accidentally booked my ticket on the wrong date so I refunded a minute late after I bought the tickets, they have a £10 refund policy and I was meant to get my money back within 5 days however I never got my money back in the end.
I payed for a £100 ticket and they never refunded me and stole all of my money. I was already mad about the £10 charge for refunds so I accepted it since I’d get at least £90 back but after 5 days I never got my refund back. So I called them and they said random excuses and told me that due to policies they can only refund me £20 of what I bought 😀. But they couldn’t even refund me my £20 in the end. And after looking at different apps I found that there are much better and cheaper and more trustworthy apps which DO NOT STEAL YOUR MONEY and they do not have a refund charge either which is very helpful. I believe anyone who is using trains apps for the first time should do their research first and be careful with which app they buy their tickets from and they should DEFINITELY NOT BUY FROM TRAINLINE!! Otherwise they’ll scam you.

Trainline sold me a ticket on Boxing Day through EMR. No trains were available on that day since i learned later that WMR never sell tickets on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. I asked for a refund for my ticket and hotel as I had to spend the night before returning home the second day. They refunded me the ticket and not the hotel , and then they changed the dates of the ticket on my app so that it couldn’t show that they sold me a ticket that EMR would never sell on Boxing Day. There is no way to reach them properly and I’ve been chasing this for 3 months now. Trainline have successfully lost a customer who has been with them for years as they did not give me my due right when I deserved it. I even stayed at a cheap hotel. I now book through other apps for free and avoid the charge Trainline imposed on me in return for nothing.

It’s very difficult to get a refund from the trainline and if you do they take loads of charges off you prior which makes it feel not worthwhile, which I imagine is the purpose. Given the pathetic state of trains in the UK this means loosing a lot of money. Have lost tickets to app glitches and been stranded. Also frustrated with the upselling, adding 1st class to your journey without asking and then those trains not even having first class on board. As useless as the train system and frankly a scam. Every so often I forget and in a rush or panic order a ticket for what feels like ease but it just makes more sense to pay more in the station. As national rail app is terrible this app can be helpful for seeing times of trains.

I am highly disappointed by using “Trainline” to book train tickets online. I wanted to book ticket for 6th of January but it keeps the current date despite the fact that future date was selected for couple of times. After booking, the payment deducted and I was not able to amend the ticket. The app says “to amend the ticket you need to book another ticket and the original ticket will be refunded”. So I booked another ticket but was not able to amend the original ticket. I am unable to contact anyone for the refund and now when I am getting closer to the travelling date and time, the app does not show my tickets by displaying messages that “something went wrong please contact the customer service centre”. My first ticket cost me £75 and second ticket cost me £112. After paying these huge amounts still I am stuck in the app to get the ticket. Further, I am not able to contact anyone for assistance or to resolve the issue.

Cambridge north to Greenwich today - easily set up in the app. Booking the ticket is very easy. However the one problem is when you look up the stops - I just want to walk from kings cross to St Pancras and get the train to Greenwich - the app tells me it is a 29 minute changeover and that there are two changes. But actually there is only one change which is at Kings Cross. As I know what my journey looks like I take no notice of the strange instructions. If you hadn’t done this journey before you would be very confused! I dare say there is some explanation for this if you are in the know (or are the person who wrote the app) but to most purchasers I suspect it is very confusing.

I use the Trainline to track my husband's progress when he travels from Yorkshire to Norfolk. He often runs late (thank you East Midlands Railway) and Trainline is great for seeing how late he's going to be until ... the timetabled arrival time arrives, then the tracking stops and app says the train has arrived. For example, last night the train was nearly an hour late. It was tracked with expected arrival time at Norwich until Ely, at which point it stopped tracking because the timetabled arrival time passed. If there were further delays during the remaining hour's journey, I would have had no idea. Please set the app so that it tracks the train until it actually arrives rather than when it's supposed to arrive.

I’m not too sure if it a local issue or the version of the app I have, but I am unable to log into the app and the website is also not working (which I assume is temporary).
I also just tried to book train tickets and got a confirmation that the booking had failed and that my money would be refunded. However, unsurprisingly, like many companies the Trainline seem to be absolutely fine with taking my money (£130) instantly for a payment (even though the service failed) and don’t see any issue with making me wait 5 working days for a refund. Im sure most people are totally fine with being £130 or more short for 5 days.
I also don’t see any good in not having the direct capability to change the email address associated with my account like I’m able to with a lot of other user accounts for other websites / online services. The process of changing this via customer services seem archaic and inefficient.

Great service when it works, but when it goes wrong and you need a refund you better be prepared for some pain holding on the phone for an hour and then jumping through hoops to prove that their process didn’t work. You can request a refund online but they take a £10 admin fee even though it wasn’t your fault, so you then need to call and hold for an hour, then email photos of receipts of replacement tickets you had to buy at the station because the Trainline ticket didn’t work. I’ve yet to see if I get a full refund but suffice to say I’ll be adding a new 1* review if I don’t and asking my credit card company to refund the payment. My advice …. use Trainline for info but buy your tickets at the station … save yourself the Trainline fee and the pain when it goes wrong!

Let’s face it, the app is brilliant. It’s intuitive, it’s clean, it’s reliable and it holds your e-tickets or sticks them in your Apple wallet.
Sadly, it’s for a company that charges a booking fee, which you may well accept on the basis that it’s for a nice service, but just think, every time your train is cancelled, they’ll rob you of that booking fee, and they’ll do the same to everyone else who would have been travelling. So imagine they sold every ticket on that train, and let’s imagine it’s a Grand Central service of 268 seats, and there are four services per day for a month, per line, over four lines, five days a week, all cancelled due to COVID restrictions reducing profitability, and everyone got charged the same £1.75 booking fee, that’s £163,000 a month smashed into the biscuits and cake fund whilst all those people have to cancel arrangements, pay for Uber, parking, wherever. Of course I’m being ridiculous, and it’s a lot more that that. Don’t bother, and use Trainpal instead.

Its really disappointing that this companies are actually leeching money off ppl due to the pandemic. I bought an advance return ticket to see my family unfortunately due to the recent corona restriction i was not able to travel at all. I wanted to get a refund however i was told that one of my ticket is none refundable and due to the huge admin charge i was getting refund like 15% of what i had actually paid. I was also suggested that i should change my date instead 😂😂 is this a JOKE how would i know when thing will settle down . I did try to change my ticket but i was not able to do it since one of my ticket was none refundable🤦🏻‍♀️. Previously i was refunded a full amount even tho both my return tickets were non refundable due to the previous restrictions.
Whats really funny is that couple of times before the pandemic i had made a mistake to some of my ticket purchases cuz the app is really unreliable i wanted to get a refund and of course i dont want to pay the huge admin fee. I contact them, My tickets were none refundable and i was issued a full refund with out the admin charge. 😂😂
Plus the customer service chat in train line is getting worst all they do is copy and paste the same thing again and again. Talking to them is waste of your time and waste of your phone min.

New review Great app overall, in particular when travelling across borders/different train companies. I‘ve had one negative experience which I have detailed below but the dev team responded promptly and hopefully won’t be reproduced.
Previous review: « Do not buy tickets for trains in Italy via the app. Despite the few euros you will pay for the ease of use you will lose some key functionalities as the booking is done via the trainline email address. This means that these tickets cannot be modified or cancelled directly on the trenitalia website. So it is better to directly buy the tickets (cheaper and more cancellation option) on the trenitalia website directly. As Trainline s only advice if you wish to exchange is to not use the online method but to try to explain yourself at the train station. A risky option... »

This is my most used app for train travel, including for getting updates while on journey. The information throughout the app is presented logically, and it’s easy to understand.
I can’t find a way to contact the development team with app suggestions, so I’ll add mine here: With the requirement to pre-book seats on the longer legs of the trip due to social distancing requirements, it would be great if the Add to Calendar option automatically added seat details to the iOS calendar entry. At present only the booking reference number and a link back to the booking in the app is included. At the moment I am manually adding booked seat details to each Calendar entry - and I suspect I’m not the only user that would find this helpful!
Anyway, thanks for a great app.

The only thing it saves is the route and time (although there’s a problem with selecting a favourite time, as I want to save a train that’s at 7 o’clock in the morning and it’s 1 o’clock in the afternoon now, and it’s showing me train times up to 10 at night and not the previous train times before 1 o’clock either, so I’ll have to wait until later). It also doesn’t save if you want a return or not which makes it completely useless for me as I only want to buy returns. The favourites tab also doesn’t allow you to search in the tab itself, you have to search for the service you want on the main section and then it appears in the favourites menu. This section is completely useless to me and probably for a lot of other people.

Winning Winnie!

The journey was so tense and exciting racing in traffic towards my new adventurous life with my honeysuckle betrothed - finally someone who understood every fibre of my being - right down to my love for the very roots of Pooh bear. My heart pulsed vibrantly in my chest until I realised it was my electric toothbrush instead! Every nerve and cell was on edge and yet I could still enjoy zooming on the fast train across 160 miles of beautiful British countryside. Was my story going to end the same, burying my ashes of the past? As I searched the treetops for my titanium strength while my stomach lurched and my heavy chest felt like it was being cracked with a vice like retractor ripping my body apart. The pain was excruciating! How could I survive this? Stepping anxiously onto the bridge I caught his sweet smouldering eyes as they met mine and those dimples simply melted my heart and we zipped into the zip car of love . Trevor Noah - therapy for life! Woohoo! Love you darling!

The individual train companies in the UK are so mean about refunds. Ive been delayed over half an hour multiple times and refused any kind of repayment by Northern Rail. They even cancelled my train WHILST I WAS SAT ON IT and kicked me off at a random station and STILL refused to refund me! Recently I spent over £50 on a train ticket and then my train was completely cancelled. The next 3 trains were also cancelled. So I cancelled my event and went home. By the time I got home, they had un-cancelled the trains! And they refused to refund me because they told me I should have just got the next train!!
Thankfully trainline came to my rescue!! I filled in a very very short application on the trainline website that explained my situation and they said they would talk to the train company and “do all the leg work for me” and they did! I got a full refund very quickly! Thank you so much trainline!
The application online for Avanti refunds didn’t even have the option of “abandoned journey because of cancelled trains”. So there was no way for me to appeal. The train companies are so stingy, even after they ruin your whole journey or kick you off in the middle of the country somewhere!
I recommend trainline to everyone travelling so that you don’t get scammed out of your money by avanti or northern rail etc.
Thank you trainline!!!

Mostly easy to use but Not clear enough

While the app works smoothly most of the time, it doesn’t give enough information on train ticket validity and the FAQs are sparse in providing these answers. only after having to repay for a ticket was I explained to by a ticket collector the times for off peak and super off peak, the weekday to weekend difference and how to change tickets in the station. None of this Information is easy to find or clear on the app itself when booking the ticket.
even with an open return, the varying and unclear nature of peak, off peak and super off peak is different from service to service and day to day meaning that it’s easy to be caught out with a ticket that is no longer valid.

Joined up service to Europe?

After loading this app, I got a screen suggesting it was possible to get tickets for trains to Europe. So I tried to get times and prices from my local station to Paris, but “oops something went wrong”.
I tried from the next biggest town but “Oops, etc...” and another city, etc.
Eventually found you have to get your tickets separately from London to Paris and then from your local station to London. However you can buy a combined ticket from London to a further afield destination in France which uses Eurostar and a separate train company.
Back to the local station. You have to buy your Eurostar ticket first as many are sold out and then find a ticket from your local station to the London station that is achievable. I.e. the sort of logistical exercise that you’re using the app to try and avoid.
For uk journeys the app is good and I’ve used it for years.

They keep cancelling my booking and won’t resolve the issue

I booked trains from London to Germany for Christmas and they took the money out of my account and then cancelled the tickets. I contacted their customer support but they can’t help with tickets to Europe. Grand ! Now I am left without money and tickets to go home for Christmas and by the time I get a refund ticket prices will be up by a lot!
Update:
I got the money back and was told this rarely happens and not to reserve seats . I tried to book tickets again and the same thing happened AGAIN. Trainline has been absolutely unhelpful in getting me the tickets they offer on their website / app. The total price for a comparable journey went up from 186£ to 240£ as well. How are people supposed to fly less and be environmentally friendly when booking a train home is IMPOSSIBLE and expensive and booking a flight takes about 10min :(

*update* I have since found out my phone didn't have spare memory, once I deleted a few things the app downloaded and works fine! Thanks to the developers for offering to investigate further :)
App was not allowing me to open it (it was greyed out) so couldn’t show my ticket at the barriers. Luckily the ticket attendant trusted me. I uninstalled the app and tried to reinstall it and it isn't downloading to my phone. It could be that it’s a bug with my phone but not had the trouble with any other app. Otherwise, good app when working!

What have you done to the app?! 🤯

I love love love adore adore and obsessively use this Train Line app. Last few weeks the app is very clunky. It is very very slow in opening up, in processing searches for tickets and finding tickets. Instead of seemingly instantaneous like usual it takes 5-10 seconds! Making me think each time it has frozen!!
Today after update the app gave me a black screen, on shut down and reopen it gives me BLANK blue heading and green box screen 🙈🤯☠️ And it's NOT giving ME ANY INFO 😡 I've screenshot it if you don't believe me. I've never seen the app done this since I've used it for nearly 6 years now. Only change I did was UPDATE the app just now before I write this review!!
Thought you should know the new update done on 4 Nov 2019 gives blank screen of blank blue and green boxes when open app after update ☠️
