Crashes

It was fantastic till a recent fix-now it crashes whenever you try to hear the word in English or French. Previously it was outstanding, 10 star, but in using to teach a child, the spoken language is imperative. Please fix again to regain full marks. Thank you.

was a really good app but on the latest version of IOS trying to play the sound/pronunciation crashes the app. Translations still work so useful but less valuable

Excellent and great value

I searched for a while for a dictionary that has a wide vocabulary, examples of use, conjugations and pronunciations. Those I looked at where either very expensive (£20-£25) or free with drawbacks (limited vocabulary or intrusive advertising). This Larousse does exactly what I need and is a fair price.

Larousse English - French Dictionary.

An excellent resource. Plenty of examples given for each word to permit context-learning. The sound option really allows you to embed the right sounds as part of your learning.

Loss of audio a real pain!

For goodness sake can you please sort out the loss of audio/prononciation on this app. It negates 50% of its usefulness! Come on Larousse...

Good dictionary indeed but

This app appears to clash with itranslate app. I updated the itranslate app to pro and immediately lost sound on Larousse and another dictionary. This happened on all versions of the apps ie German / French. Eng/ French and the same with the other app. This was with iPad Air. On my iPad 2 I did not download the itranslate app and have no probs with Larousse or the other dictionary apps

Best in show

Excellent little app. Good level of detail in the definition compared to others I've looked at; nice clean page with clear layout. Am using on an iPhone 6 and have none of the difficulties other reviewers have experienced with the audio pronunciation function. I didn't think I'd use the pronunciation function but it is surprisingly useful, especially for longer phrases. Tremendous value for money.

Excellent dictionary

I've used it thousands of times and every day when I'm travelling in France. It's quick and easy to use.
The only change I'd like to see is the facility to export your favourite words and their descriptions to another format.
It's one of my top 5 apps.

Excellent, but sort out the problems!!!!!!

Come on Larousse!!! Nothing seems to have been done about the much reported iOS 7.1.2 audio crash. You are besmirching your company and an excellent product by your lack of response. Reviews are key to future success. Get a grip. My first review said:
Have used this for over a year, and it has proved to be excellent. Highly professional.
HOWEVER....on updating my iPhone from 3 to 4 and therefore from iOS 6 to IOS 7, the very excellent 'Definitions' feature (downloaded as an extra after the app. was installed) didn't work, was lost, or seems to have migrated to the 'cloud' or web, so, like the amazing speak/pronunciation feature, no deffs. If you lose wifi or g3 data connection.
Retrograde step!
Other than that, a truly brilliant app. for the low price.
Recommend.

I like the app, but the pronunciation icons not working

When I tap on the pronunciation icon, the app shuts down. I'm running iOS 9.2.
I tried posting this on the app support link, but that took me to an error page!

No feedback possible

I like this dictionary but have two devices that I would like to synchronise. There's nowhere to be able to make this or any other comment or request. So from this point of view the app is not very customer friendly.

Is an iOS 8 update possible?

There hasn't been an update for a while. I'd like to see support for the new iPhone models if possible. Otherwise, it's an absolutely great app.

Outstanding

This is becoming one of the most frequently used apps on my phone. I like to keep up my French and often refer to it to clarify the meaning of words.
It is as good as the 2" thick printed Larousse dictionary and also includes verb tables. So it saves (up to a point) lugging around two books.
Definitions are clear and authoritative and include a variety of meanings. Some very recent or idiomatic meanings may not be included.
Overall this is an outstanding app and I highly recommend it to those serious about their French. I don't recommend it for those needing a tourist phrase book, this is for more studious use.

Excellent, and great value too

Good range of words, even some esoteric ones. App layout is good, it's easy to get to conjugations. Pronunciation feature is really useful.
IMO better than the much more expensive Collins equivalent, which has fewer words and an inferior interface.

Excellent value

This is a very well thought out app. It seems to cover pretty much any words or phrases someone will need, with good links between words & phrases, and useful sections of grammar. I used it for travelling through France though I think it would be equally useful for other purposes. Highly recommended.

Larousse French dictionary

Was excellent app but recent upgrade has lost pronunciation option - a big loss. Please sort it out!

Not bad...

But could be better. For instance, some entries are blank; try looking up 'mal-logé' or 'mal-aimé'For instance. Also, some form of in-app reporting would be good, so that these blank entries could be flagged, as well as some of the more dubious translations. As other reviewers have noted, the audio seems to have stopped working with the 6.1.2 upgrade.
I really Like the History and Favourites feature, but if the app needs to be re-installed, all your Favourites and your searching History will disappear. This has happened several times to me and it's incredibly frustrating. It would be nice if these could be stored outside of the app, so that they're always available if the app needs to be reinstalled.
Another problem that I've come across several times is lack of reciprocity: for instance, if you look at the verb 'to flout' it gives its translation as 'se passer outre de', 'se moquer de' or 'défier'. The (most common?) translation 'bafouer' isn't there. But, look up 'bafouer' in the French section and there it is: 'to flout'. Still, considering the £3.49 price, it delivers quite a lot: it just needs a bit more attention to detail...

Dr

COULD HAVE HAVE GREAT
This app is useful and has a welcome audio component. However the main problem is it will not lookup plurals nor words in the indicative .This is a serious disadvantage for the beginner in French. If stuck one has to go to google which both irritating and sad.I hope it can be tweaked because the words are in there.

Good value for money

Good app, though a little clunky with a few minor usability flaws. It sometimes stops translating which requires quitting the app with the red circle and restarting.
The content is excellent with very good word coverage, whilst the app itself is a bit mediocre and unpolished - searching for words sometimes is a bit frustrating. However for the money, compared to competition, this is a very good value for money app and I would recommend it.

Very very good

I have to pinch myself sometimes - the large tomes I used to haul around everywhere as an undergrad are now available in my pocket. Except they're better, as it's faster to get where you want with the ability to hyperlink. Add the Larousse French-only dico to you idevice and you've everything you need to the highest level. And when you are brought up on paying £££ for real books, all this seems too good to be true for a few quid. But it is!

Everything I wanted

Excellent, this ticks all the important features I wanted - a search history, verb conjugations, hear words pronounced by french speakers, no internet connection needed (except for pronunciations), favourites - all for less than the cost of the cheapest pocket dictionary in a book shop. The best I've used, and I've tried a few.
abedarts
Version 2.0.1

Very good but not perfect

I'm using it to help me read a French translation of Borges' Fictions and so far I haven't found any missing words ... but
... It doesn't handle hyperlinks for reflexive verbs, for example 'bend down' translates to 'se baiser' but if I want to go to that verb I can only click on 'baiser' which doesn't show the reflexive as a variant, so I have to search for it and type it in if I want to conjugate it.
... I can't just browse the dictionary to see what other nice words are in there - part of the fun of using a dictionary and a great way to discover new words. Even if I search for say 'C' it only shows me words as far as 'cabine' and if I want to go further I need to change my search argument.
... The back/forward buttons appear to function in their own sweet way with no apparent rhyme or reason.
All that said, I really think it's a great dictionary and if they fixed these issues it would warrant the full five stars.

Things are looking up

This is the best as well as the cheapest bilingual dictionary currently available on the iWhatever. It is easy to use and cross refer and contains many useful phrases and usages of common words. With the addition of phrase full-text lookup it would be perfect, but for the price - five stars is obligatory.
