Description

New: Rolling Average for week now has its own Preference. Added the concept of Alcohol Free Days. Added Quick list to both add and delete previously added drinks.
Ever wondered how many units there are in a drink? This App can can be used to just calculate the number of units in a drink but it can also be used to keep track of units consumed. Just press the 'Add Units' button. Until you ask yourself the question how many units am I consuming day by day, week by week and through the months you will have no idea. Many people wildly underestimate the amount they drink. This App can tell you and it can be very enlightening. Unlike other Apps this one makes no judgement on how much you drink it is a means for you to understand the amounts and to act as you see fit. If you choose to cut down then that is your choice. Maybe this App will confirm that apart from the odd day or two you are generally within guidelines.
This App is not restricted in the amounts that can be entered unlike other similar Apps. The values are entered using a decimal number pad so you are not restricted by the values specified on picker wheels. You can enter ANY amounts using US fl Ozs, millilitres, centilitres, litres, UK pints.
Drink Driving Limits: A 3.6% abv pint of beer has 2 units in it. In the UK to remain within the drink drive limit you can have no more than 1 pint of weak (3.6%) beer - any more and you risk being over the drink drive limit. Note, that the last sentence used the word 'weak', not one pint of beer but one pint of weak beer. So what difference does that make? Well a 5% beer has 2.84 units in it. So, you're probably pushing the upper limit, if not already over, the limit with one pint of 5% beer.
Add Units Page shows:
Set the percentage alcohol, the volume and the number of drinks. The volume for the drink can be expressed in US fl Ozs, millilitres, centilitres, litres, UK pints using the switches above the drink amount.
Touch a field and type in the value required. Touch the next to add the value for it. The field being editing is shown in yellow. To dismiss the keyboard, at any time, either select the OK button to the right or touch the current field.
Once the values have been entered you can add the units for the selected day. If it states the units cannot be calculated then one of the fields is not filled in correctly. If the calculated units are very large or very small then check that the fields and the switch for the volume type are set correctly.
Next to the total units for the day is the delete units for day button (the red octagonal button) and if you confirm the deletion then the units for the day are removed.
A green line that is the daily units limit set in the Preferences.
The red bars show the number of units consumed for each day.
The yellow line shows a rolling average of the number of units consumed over the last 10 days for each day.
Swipe the Graph View left or right to show the Graph for other months.
All the days for the selected month. You can move backwards and forwards using the Prev and Next buttons to show other months.
To add units to a day other than Today's date select the date in the month view table and then select the Edit button. This will show the Add Units page where the units can be added to the selected day.
Select how many units you want to allow yourself per day.
Select whether the Alcohol percentage is to be expressed as either ABV (Alcohol by Volume) or as ABW (Alcohol by Weight).
Legal Disclaimer: Do not use this App as a guide to whether you can drive a car or not. This App is just for calculating and collating the number of units consumed.
Now with Apple Watch support & iCloud Support to save your precious information. Easy to add the same units from your Apple Watch. See how many units you've consumed today glancing at your Apple Watch. Save you units consumed to iCloud. Retrieve them on another device.

The only app worth using

I give this app 5 stars for functionality & 4 for UX. 4.5 stars. It pretty much does everything you’d ever need. I’ve tried most of the alternatives.
Functionality
It’s the only app which lets you enter *any* drink. Why? Because you enter the ABV & volume. All the other apps some with vast budgets have daft features & restrict what you can input.
UX
The UI is a bit retro & you have to develop the knack of just where to hit the quick button, but it’s no big deal. The charts are handy & tell a useful story.
Jim the developer is a helpful chap too if you need assistance.

Most flexible app of its kind, but UI could improve

By far, the best app I have ever used for alcohol consumption tracking is AlcoDroid but it’s not been ported for iOS. Trying to find a similar app for iPhone is near impossible but this ticks the best of the AlcoDroid boxes.
Its key advantage over all the rest, is its ability to allow the user to type in the ABV number and the quantity of drink consumed. All the other apps have fixed drinks, like you were only being served in a bar. I like to use digital scales at home to weigh measures and I don’t always make the 125ml on a glass of wine. Sometimes it’ll be 124 or 129 etc, so to be able to enter the numbers for every aspect of one’s own alcohol consumption is the USP for this app.
My only small criticism is the UI can be a little ‘clunky’ in parts. The section where it’s possible to edit historical drinks needs work in this area, but I rarely have to use it. Other than that, this is worth every penny of its modest price tag and the fact the developer has bothered to give the power to the user to record exactly what they drink, down to the exact millilitre, is priceless in a sea of apps which have overlooked this completely.

Great App

I really like this app as it clearly identified the alcoholic units consumed. I would like one change and that is to be able to view the details of any day in retrospect. This would be useful if you have a number of different drinks on any day.

Doesn’t work

Not even basic functionality works on this very basic app. Not sure how it got published.

Straightforward drink unit app

Very easy to use showing daily and weekly units, and averages. Does not include anything superfluous like many alternatives.

Simple and the best

I’ve used several of these apps and all but one has disappointed. This app is the best.

Excellent App

As the title says.. an excellent app that keeps me informed about just how much is in "Just one more.. "

Convenient & accurate

Data entry is easy. Just add quantity and abv and units are accurately added. There are several free drink tracking apps. None is as easy to use as this one. Most don't allow easy direct entry of abv, something which really is needed for convenience if one likes a variety of beers, ales, ciders and wines. I used to use the Drinkaware app. That still has a bug which can double or triple up entries, and offers pointless badges for "achievements". Considering the huge funding of the Drinkaware charity by the drinks industry it really is shocking that after multiple negative reviews over many months they are STILL unable to get somebody competent to sort out their coding mess.

OK so far

Moved to this after the drinkaware app lost all my data, as already said, less 'hand holding' and you lose the satisfaction of entering a non drink day as this is the default position - but it does the job

Very impressed

I bought this after the Drinkaware app loused up. If I'm honest I didn't take to it immediately but it's worth perservering with.. It's as accurate as you want it to be, you can set your own limits (no silly 14 units for men here) and even adjust the weight of a unit for the country you live in. The best thing about it is there are no patronising messages or achievement badges.App support is first class too. It's a basic tool that makes you responsible for your own intake. It won't suit everyone who wants to be hand-held.

Disappointing

If you have Excel on your iPhone or iPad and know how to set up a simple table and a graph you might be able to do much better job of monitoring your alcohol units than this rather primitive App.

Great app

This is very simple to use and very effective in its aim of making one aware of the units drunk week by week and thereby allowing choices to be made. Worth every penny (hick!)

Don't bother!

This is a fiddle format and doesn't display the data in a user friendly format. I much prefer the free Fit For Life app that performs the same function.

UI broken

I use this app religiously and have done for years. It works the way I want. However, iOS 8 or something has broken the UI - everything is shifted up the screen including the pop-up keyboard which now obscures the number of drinks box. It's not impossible to enter a number, but it's hard. I have 8.1 on a 5S. Also, when are we getting data export?

The only decent unit calculator app

Finally I've found a unit calculator app made by someone with some sense, the other free unit calculator apps are useless because you can't enter a specific value for measurement or strength. This is a nice simple calculator that tells you exactly how many units you're having and keeps a record of it, brilliant.

Version 1.7

Useful

As the saying goes, you can't manage what you're not measuring. This takes out the guesswork of how many units in that glass and lets you know exactly now much you drink each day, week or on average.

Useful aid to tracking alcohol consumption

The app calculates the number of units in any drink provided that you know the ABV% and the volume you have consumed. Unfortunately when you add a drink to the total there is no list if each drink taken so if you are insure if you added that chaser you took, you can't check. The daily and monthly graphs are very clear and motivating.

Ok but needs work

I don't mind finding the ABV - the App at least lets you record accurate amounts. The missing function is being able to see what you've already recorded. It would help to be able to go back and check what you've recorded, change errors e.g. When you find out the right ABV. The lack of this function really drops the usefulness for me.

Better than a nagging wife

This helped me reduce my drinking a while back. I now use it to keep my drinking in check if I feel it is on the increase. It's better than others on the market as you can adjust the abv and amounts allowing you to record your consumption of a wide range of drinks. A very useful tool.

Good app but needs work

Very good app, easy to use and seems to be accurate. Two suggestions to make it a lot better:
- the ability to go back and see a breakdown of any given day's intake. I may have beer and wine on the same day, but as it stands I can't go back and look to see how much I've had of each. I know it's the total that's important, but being able to see how much I'm drinking of each type of drink would be very helpful.
- save favourite drinks for re-use. For example, my most common drinks are a pint of 4.5% beer and a glass of 12% wine so it would be nice not to have to type the values for each every time.
Other than that, good, informative and has definite health benefits!

Needs attention and update

I have used this for a week. The chart in the current month fails to map- lots of lines - reinstalled, lost all the previous data from the iPhone, retyped in, used for another few days and it just happened again. I am sure there must be better apps out there. This app is so basic and non graphical that doesn't deserve the three stars that encouraged me to try it. Sorry cannot recommend.

Make it better......

Great app, but definitely needs developing further....pleeeeeze!! Some good suggestions are made below, but also would be good to view a number of months at the same time (export them to desktop perhaps) as the scale changes each month (well mine does...ooops).

Useful but needs more!

I found this app very useful as it shows you the actual amount of units you consume with every drink and shows a good representative of what you consume.
With it being an app that is not free, I think it needs more options etc, as in a week view (aswell as the month view), some information/warnings as to what the amount of alcohol is doing to your body and I think it would be a good idea to show the amount of calories consumed with every drink and show it in the same respect as the units calculator as it is in the graph.

ACU

This is a very useful app if, like me, you need to keep track of how many units you are drinking. It's easy to use and shows the result in a bar chart.
I would, however, like an explanation of the yellow line on the graph.
It would be useful if the app calculated weekly consumption and added it up automatically. The month view is not very useful.

Ok

Does what it says, needs a week view in my opinion.
Also should save a drink type under a user defined name for ease of use.

Great App!

This is a really great little app and quite possibly a life-saver. It really does bring home to you how easy it is to overindulge without realisation. I hadn't realised how much alcohol I was actually drinking, and have been able to visually see my reduction on a daily basis (and yes, I'm still having fun).
Being able to enter the values by different quantities and set the ABV level for different drinks is a great plus as it makes the whole process so much more accurate, and the average chart lets you see at once if your consumption is creeping up.
Its on my front page and used daily! Anyone who likes a drink, but wants to stay healthy should use this.
