Fantastic
Fantastic game. I only play solo but I have encountered no problems at all. Wonderfully varied game for when you have 10 minutes to kill.

The worst
Don't waste your time or money on this useless game. The worst I have ever experienced!
I can't believe they have the nerve to charge almost £5 for almost no gaming content.

No in game tutorial, and the game itself is pretty boring. Not very deep at all.

Excellent
Great game with lots of replay ability, nice graphics, very easy to navigate with clear indicators, etc, and online gameplay is really good with cross platform support. There are very minor niggling issues, but nothing major enough to even mention. Get it, for 79p it's a bargain.

Brilliant
If you enjoy the board version then this is a must. It's great for a quick solo game but also handy if you fancy a quick game without getting the bits out.
If you have never played the Small World board game you are missing out on one of the best games ever made. Try this app which is exactly the same as the board game and you WILL purchase the board version.

Weak AI lets it down
This is a great implementation of the board game with a fantastic UI. Really the only thing letting it down is that the AI is weak and isn't really going to offer you much of a challenge.

Poorly balanced
Small World 2 has the makings of a good game, but terrible game balance completely let's it down, to the point where it is just not worth playing.
The game and the terrible excuse for expansions are ridiculously over-priced.

Good game but awful online
Good game {think risk but with many more possible combos) but horrendous online; dead, tough to get a match, and no time limit on player turns so when u do eventually find a match, u sit there for ages while they get bored and stop playing... Horrendous, not worth the money.

Shame about the AI
Haven't had the chance to play this online as I generally prefer avoiding the rage quitting you normally experience in online play. Unfortunately as has been previously pointed out their are serious issues with the AI. The most serious of which seems to be that all the AI players target any human players races on the board regardless of whether it makes any sense . Even though I have obviously not been leading they still go for mine rather than an obviously stronger other bot player. It generally results in the bots playing kingmaker for other bots. This seems to especially prevalent the more bots you have in the game. Just imagine playing a boardgames with friends and family where every time they play they just aim to stop you winning regardless of whether they can win and you can see how you would lose interest in playing. Until this is fixed I shall look for some alternative games to play. Shame as the rest of the game is lovely

Excellent for local play
Love the board game and I've been hoping for a multiplayer version to come out. I only want the pass and play mode to play with my family and it was a pleasure to play. Strongly recommend.
Small bug report - my flying giants didn't get their -1 reduction for attacks. Update: My mistake in understanding the rules, it's actually fine.
Request: Redeploy button is close to troops and my young children push by mistake. If you have 3+ troops please add an "Are you sure?" pop-up.

Too many bugs
Great update but there are still loads of bugs, at least on the 5 player mode that I've been playing, some bots have been able to take all their tokens out of a region -leaving none in - when going on their second turn with that race and that is when their special power and race doesn't have that ability. have seen pillaging humans do this and a couple others. Also twice now I have put my ghouls into decline and the comp has kept tokens back without replacing them on the board. Have been playing pretty consistently with all three add ons bought and still haven't seen 2-3 of the races and 2-3 of the special powers come up - this is either bad luck or a bug. Apart from the bugs the update is very welcome and really improves the game.

Wonderful game but and only a little but
Great game on all levels but please add something that sorts the online game out if someone times out or crashes please your just sat waiting with other players feeling frustrated that the game will not continue. Just a idea is there any chance you could maybe add some animations to the water along with the fish and birds I think it would look great on the board. Thank you for the update great game.

Awesome job by Days of Wonder for turning this game around. The UI is smooth and looks great, plus the addition of all of the normal board game features and online multiplayer makes it totally worth it.

Very good Conversion
Good conversion of the board game. Works very well on the iPad. The AI is suitably worthy opponent. My only gripe is even in a single player vs AI their actions are all upside down which seems pointless unless your playing against someone sitting opposite. You also don't seem to be able to view what their race and special is once the AI has picked it.

Needs a better intro, but a good game nonetheless
Small World is a great little strategy game with simple rules providing a nice level of depth and the different races and powers making for lots of different experiences.
Starting up though the AI will take you down, hard. There are no difficulty settings and worse still there seems to be no easy way to see what abilities the AI is using. It also glosses over some important rules and the implications of them. Until you get a handle on this the game can be pretty frustrating. That said I picked it up in under an hour so it shouldn't take that much effort.
Also a major free update is coming later in the year. I'd recommend getting this now before the price rises.

Superb for two players, but 'Bot' too difficult in single player
Title really says it all, the AI opponent in single player is too difficult, really needs a difficulty select. I have taken two stars off for that flaw, as the single player is pretty useless as it is.

Works fantastically on the ipad, I only wish you could play with more than 2 players - then it would be superb.

Only one difficulty
Whilst enjoyable, the computer only has one difficulty level, which is quite advanced. First time players may find this challenging. Also the walk through provided for your first game isn't detailed enough to direct you how to play successfully

This does create the two player experience well however you can't just pass and play this game is annoying. There are no option to turn this off so it just looks lazy from the developers. Also no in game options make this seem not quite as good as first seems. 2/5 good do better

I love and enjoy the boardgame but I wont give you 5 stars for the successes of the original. Im only giving 3 stars to the app, it seems like theres more work to be done on it still.
As a fan of the board game I find this app good fun but it won't replace the full board game anytime soon!
The comparatively hefty £4.99 price seems justifiable considering the board game is £35 but then again the board game doesn't have bugs and can have more than 2 players...
The instructions were a bit short and vague, I don't think anybody new to this game would have fully understood the rules and implied tactics etc (the board game has a huge rule book!)
Sometimes the restricted linearity of the rule enforcement is stifling. It would be really good if you had the option to access some basic settings to agree custom rules like in a human game. Ie: turn time limits, re-do mistakes, or extended number of rounds in a game.
Also the AI is a bit weak, you get tired of winning and eventually start feeling sorry for the bot player... Another thing you should be able to adjust is bot difficulty/ behaviour (conservative/ agressive etc)
Isn't there a way to have more players? Or even just choose a different map?
Needs more expansions, expansions are reasonably priced so I dont mind paying for them. Surely bring out the rest of the expansions? Or Underworld?

Great game but needs to incorporate more players
Great game but a bit short as its only 2 player. I'm pretty sure the Giant option conquering adjacent Mountain regions with one less token doesn't work. But other than that - great version of the board game

small world but big game
The rules very simple, but combination of characters and abilities gives a variety of gameplay options. Currently restricted to two players, it will be good to see this expanded to support more. The artwork is fun, complemented by good in-game music.
An all round entertaining game, I'm looking forwards to seeing more of the expansions available for the board game becoming available on the ipad. I am going to buy the board game as I know my kids will love this

Faithful conversion
Great iPad version of the board game but only supporting 2 players severely lets it down - with clever UI expansion / tweaks could easily add more human players for pass & play

Very good... But...
This is a beautifully put together app, the art, sound and interface are exceptional. I love the board game but not so much as a 2 player, which is (by far) the weakest setup.

good but...
please add the 'Don't Be Afraid' expansion as well as 2 levels of AI... while it is OK for me at this point, the difficulty level while learning the game was steep as the AI is not very novice friendly. Also, let experienced users skip the step-by-step counting of VP for the turn, at this point it takes probably 20% of the overall game time, for very little benefit!

Just one star left outside
I must say that Small World is one of the best digital implementations of board games I've seen so far, though if you have never played it before I'd recommend that beforehand you spend a bit of time to get the basic rules (number of tokens necessary to conquer a region, effect of races powers and decline feature).
To receive a five stars rate it just need to implement online multiplayer feature. Oh and also Tales of Small World expansion would be really welcome.

Simply put: one of the best games on the iPad
Originally I found it quite hard to understand the mechanics of the game as the instructions were quite sparse. After playing (read: losing) ten games I started getting the hang of it and now can't put it down. To avoid learning the game the hard way, go to the Days of Wonder website and look at the board game instructions which are a lot clearer.
This is a quality, fun game with great art direction and charming characters that will totally hook you. The game mechanics mean that no two games or strategies will ever be the same.
Completely recommended!

It is 2 player but it's very good...
I already knew how to play this, as does my daughter, we could play this app straight away with no problems. It's really well done, great interface, looks fab. If you don't already know how to play small world go to days of wonder web site and check the rules, the in-app ones are quite brief...

Why only two-player?
I own the original boardgame version of this already, so getting to grips with the rules wasn't an issue for me. This is a very well done implementation of the boardgame, except that the boardgame is for 2-5 players, so why is this limited to two?? Developing it to full playability should be the priority, not releasing expansion sets for it. This would be five starts easily if it was the proper 2-5 player version.

Lots of fun - kids always find their way
This is great a time-spender for me and my son. He's 8 and got the rules fine after several rounds. Yes, the characters' powers and rules are complex but nothing I would consider exceptional.

Good conversion but limited
Having played the board game, I find myself playing the ipad version a lot. Shame that it only supports 2 players though, would be much better with 2 humans + 3 computers!! Also, more expansion packs please! :-)

Fun, deep, great looking...but only 2-player
Don't listen to the reviews that say this game is incomprehensible! It takes a couple of games to get into it, but once you do, the gameplay is fun and there is plenty of depth that allows for strategy and planning.
I've been playing games with my co-workers at lunchtime in work and we're all having fun with it.
It has a high replay factor due to the randomised race/combo choices and the AI is challenging if you're playing solo.
For a game of this quality, for this price point, to be getting poor reviews is an outrage!

Pretty good conversion
This is an excellent conversion of the board game although it is limited only being a 2 player game when the board game is 2 - 5. I would give it 5 stars if it added more players.

Confusing :(
First of all let me say this game has lush graphics and good sound, so 10/10 for that.
The problems begin if you have not played the board game, which I haven't. There is a quick start guide in the game, but it immediately starts using cryptic terms like tokens and markers. Not a great introduction.
The tutorial bumbles you through a few turns but doesn't explain why you're doing what you're doing. In short, theres no info about where exactly the strategy is.
I've beaten the AI 4 out of 4 times without really having a good grasp of any strategy, so I guess either the AI is fairly poor, or theres not really much substance to the game other than pretty graphics. It really needs much more work on explaining the game, and maybe a strategy guide... When to decline, and when to use certain races.
Also I hate the way the AI plays upside down, as if he's sat opposite you. Why can't it just show his toolbar at the bottom during his turn?

If you've played the original tabletop version you'll be pleased to know all the strategy and (slightly) insane gameplay remains intact, if not then you're in for a VERY pleasant surprise - this is not Ludo *g*
There are lots of ways to win and the mix of the different real/fantasy races is very funny. A++++ recommended!
Now if they'd release a version of Nuclear War or maybe camels Across the Desert...

Boardgamers' delight.
My friends and I love the board-game and having it on the iPad is fantastic. Graphics and game play are just like the real thing. To be able to play a board-game in a coffee-shop without taking up table after table is great.
The latest update has extended my love of this app; the AI opponent is pretty tough! All I would ask is that it be made more than two players if possible and PLEASE add the expansions that were released for the physical game.
Overall, if you a board-game geek then buy this app; if you have never played a board-game in your life then buy this app, you will not regret it. Now, go conquer some regions!

Very cool!
This is a great game and it translates extremely well to the iPad. I hope it presages more excellent European board games ported to the iPhone in the future.
It possibly could benefit from some additional things, like "undo". I know I made several mistakes playing it the first several times—not strategy mistakes, but mistakes with the interface—as well as the odd strategy mistake that you realize just after you've placed the piece and go, "Gee, I wish I could re-do that" In the real world, people would usually let you "fix" your mistakes.
I hope we'll be able to buy the expansions too, perhaps as a micro-purchase within the game? That would be cool.
My partner would like the side-by-side mode to not flip the board upside for the second player. That works well if the board is on the table and is realistic, but…
It really is a world of slaughter!
