Description

* Unlimited free map downloads based on Ordnance Survey® OpenData, at 1:25,000 and 1:10,000 scales, and now also paid map downloads at 1:50,000, 1:25,000 and 1:10,000 scales, just like the paper maps. * 3D mode ideal for mountains. * Maps downloaded and saved for off-line use. * Mark waypoints, plan routes and record tracks. * Import and export GPX files. * Plot graphs of altitude and speed. * View your photos on the map. * Off-line place, street name and postcode search.
After installing the app, please touch the '?' button to view instructions including how to download detailed maps.
Northern Ireland is not included. The Isle of Man is included only at 1:250,000 (free) and 1:50,000 (paid).
Since 2010, Britain's national mapping agency Ordnance Survey has released a large amount of free map data. UK Map makes much of that data available in a single app. It includes 1:1M MiniScale® and 1:250k road maps, which are built into the app, and 1:25k district maps and 1:10k street maps for the entire country which you can download in 5km by 5km tiles. As the free O.S. data does not include footpaths, this app superimposes footpaths derived from volunteer-collected data from OpenStreetMap.org. These downloads are free of charge.
In addition to the free maps, you can also purchase and download 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps that are just like the Ordnance Survey paper maps. You can also purchase 1:10,000 maps for selected urban areas which show more detail than the free 1:10,000 maps.
Once you've downloaded the detailed maps that you need, an internet connection is not required.
The app can load GPX files (for example, from websites, other apps and from nearby devices via AirDrop) and display waypoints, tracks and routes. You can also mark waypoints, plan routes and record tracks within the app, and export them.
You can view graphs of altitude or speed along recorded tracks and routes.
The app has a 3D mode that lets you view the terrain from any viewpoint, useful for visualising hills and mountains.
The app also includes a searchable gazetteer containing over 250,000 place names, 850,000 street names and 1.6 million post codes. All of this data is built in to the app, so this search also works when there is no network connection.
The app also supports the compass and GPS - on those devices that have them - to display your position, orientation and altitude.
Paid maps are licensed for personal and non-commercial use only.

Best £8 I have spent on an app

Version 4.2
After initial layout (£7.99) for this app, I was expecting to pay for each detailed OS map I might want in addition. As it turned out, there are free maps available and the 1:10,000 version is perfect if you are looking to find places to walk anywhere in UK. Bridleways, footpaths etc are all well detailed on the free maps. After living in my area for 20+ years we’ve found places to walk that we would never have otherwise found. Not sure what the paid maps offer in addition yet but I may download one just to check what else is included. Not sure what they actually cost as the prices don’t seem apparent. All in all - a fantastic for wannabe walkers & local explorers.

Version 4.2
I spent £8.00 to buy this app (which, incidentally has a dreadful cluttered interface) but all that buys you, effectively (other than a VERY low detailed map (pretty much only showing major motorways etc)) is a conduit to purchase more detailed maps each one of which costs you a further £3.00. That MIGHT be OK but mine failed to download!! Will be contacting Apple about this.
Essentially dont be fooled by the graphics on the sales pitch, the real thing is NOTHING like it! Avoid at all costs. 👎👎👎

Waste of money

Version 4.1
I’ve used UK Map extensively for a year and a half or so, and can honestly say it’s paid for itself many times over.
Having tried a variety of outdoor navigation apps, it’s by far my favourite; mainly thanks to the very clear user interface. Every time I use other apps (outside the UK) I get annoyed about useless features, maps take forever to download even on fast internet, clunky interface, etc.
Nitpicking: unfortunately the app has a tendency to crash/ cause my phone to switch off when a recorded walk or run exceeds 25km or so, but the files have always been recovered reliably.
A huge thanks to the developer who has created the clearest, most user friendly outdoor navigation app I’ve ever used.

Version 4.1
Used and loved this app for about a year. Recorded all my walks to track distance, times and locations. With the new Apple update, the app keeps crashing after about 5 mins, with a message saying “automatically recovered after crash”. The recording of the walk is now useless.

Indispensable app!

With this app you can have (for free) the entire UK in high detailed on your phone. It has GPS which means if you have low battery or no WiFi or data access you can navigate out of trouble. OS maps are miles better than the crap google maps. This app is indispensable!

Update looses your previous map collection.

Version 3.2
I have used this app for many years since it was first conceived and never been let down in any shape or form. The updates have always improved the app with new features. The only part missing was plotting a route so had to export / share the gpx file from one app to this one (easy enough but messy for corrections to a planned route). Now with the latest update I was so happily surprised to find that route plotting is available. Which works exceptionally well. I could not be happier, well done developers and thank you. Various other bits and pieces have been improved as well. With out doubt this must now be the best UK OS mapping application for walking / hiking / biking available. The file system does need a little getting used to but you will not be disappointed with this navigation app. Just remember to touch the "FILES" tab at the top to get to the main files menu list then work from there. Thank you developers keep up the good work.

Had this app for some time and in its early stages the interface was a bit hit and miss but now it’s been revamped and more user friendly and has become invaluable to our country walks. I love the fact u can download a detailed map for the area you’re visiting and even in the most remote area areas with out any phone signal it will track your position. Very clever.

This app has a much more comprehensive gazetteer than the O.S. Maps app, (which is peculiarly idiosyncratic for ‘definitive’ data).
It’s quick, comprehensive, and I wouldn’t be without it. Great postcode search, street naming, permanent connection not required.
This app is vice-free 🙂

I’ve used this map app for so many years I can’t remember, it’s always been on my iOS device, I’m pretty sure I’ve had it for eight years. I recommend it to anyone I know who is a walker, cyclist, runner etc. I love downloading maps for offline usage around areas I know don’t have decent signal. I’ve hiked all over Scotland, Wales and England with it. I can’t praise it enough and felt it was due a review. I can’t imagine a time when I won’t have it installed.

I purchased this OS map app many years ago and am always pleasantly surprised as it continues to be upgraded and updated with current OS maps (without trying to charge extra). It has been useful and reliable on many occasions, installed on many iPhones over the years. Lots of apps like this stagnate after an initial few updates, but not this one. Well done and thanks to the conscientious developer.

This was one of the very first apps I ever bought, maybe six or seven years ago. I couldn’t get enough of it then and showed it to everyone as a demonstration of what my iPad could do. In the last couple of weeks I have started to use all the route import, navigation and locational features. There is a lot there and it takes a bit of learning, but it’s stunned me again. Would still be value if it was ten times the price. Thanks developers xxxxxx

Updated Sept 2017: this app gets better.
I’ve now got it on an iPhone 8 Plus. The experience is brilliant. Super smooth and sharp.
This is a superb app on both iPhone and iPad. Utilising OS Open Data, it presents it to best effect. Draped over a terrain model it does a great 3D job. It's wonderful to zoom around.
Practically it's great too. Was heading up the Lakes recently for a walk around Blencathra. The 3D rendering makes it simple to visualise and see what the landscape looks like.
Great stuff!

Almost a great app but not for serious walking

Having read the reviews was very much hoping I'd found the app for me. The App itself works very well and its easy to download regions of interest. However, have found two problems with it so far - which is not to do with the software but rather the maps used.
1. just looking the region where i live i found that a fair number of designated public paths are missing (which are shown on 1:25k & :50k OS land ranger maps) hard to quantify but possibly as high as 1/3rd of footpaths missing.
2. another issue for me though is that boundary /field walls are not shown this is an issue on those occasions where path markers are sparse/ confusing or in poor weather.
Where it is particularly good is in villages / towns here the additional information at street level excels.
Unfortunately not what i was hoping for in this app.

Excellent app

This app is just brilliant, so I keep it on my iPad and iPhone. Thanks to the GPS feature, I never get lost any more, even at the top of Blencathra when the cloud was so thick I could barely see my own feet. It's the best app on either device. If you ever leave the house, you need this app.

I'm sold on this app. It used to be really good with great value access to maps at several levels of scale. Then they added a ton of route features. It took me a while to get my head around them but the support for this app is also exceptionally good. The route planning and recording does more things than I've had a chance to try out yet but all the basic things [plan a route then record a days cycling] I've done work well. I'm not loyal or anything. I recently looked to see if the competition from OS maps (or others) had anything to offer. Some of what OS maps is supposed to offer sounds really cool but if you read the reviews and look at the features and implementation.... I can't see why anyone would bother. I just think that when a small company gets so much right and continues to work to get better, it deserves to be acknowledged.

It's deleted all my maps!

I've been using this app for years and it's great for detailed navigation on the Lake District fells and the Highlands of Scotland. This a really great app for walking with the dog. Lots of new routes to find and explore and easily being able to follow the designated paths.
But, on a SIM enabled iPad Mini 2 iOS 10.3.3, tracking recording seems to abort when the app crashes, and it seems to crash quite a bit under a lock screen.
If this gets fixed, 5 stars.

I have been using the app for a few years and must say the latest upgrade is brilliant. I previously emailed the developer asking if he would consider the ability to drop pins on the map. This has been done and makes the app so much more useable for me. It's a really simple process to drop, name and delete a pin I no longer needed. I also like the ability to search a number of different variables from OS Grid reference to street name and post code.
Finally the upgrade has enabled multi tasking on the iPad, which is where I mainly use the app... this means I can run the app and Apple maps in satellite view side by side, so I can view my location, drop a pin and also see the satellite image for the area as well.

Brilliant update
