Great journalism ruined by dreadful app

About a year ago this was optimised for tablets and IOS. Now it’s a pitiful, badly rendered PDF file. Why oh why did you roll back the well presented digital version to this cheap rubbish? I think I may have answered my own question there… Such a shame.

Bad app, bad customer service, good magazine

Subscribed to a 6 month package, the app then said the autorisation failed and it acted like I hadn’t subscribed. I checked the bank and yes it had been paid, so contacted the magazine, no reply, tweeted them, no reply, emailed again, no reply, contacted the publishers, guess what? No reply. In the end I had to refund it through Apple because their customer service is so terribly bad, I couldn’t get hold of them at all. Really good magazine though, packed with informative articles and some stunning photography, just a shame the app doesn’t work for me and they couldn’t be bothered to answer my questions.

A horrible reading experience

This is just a pdf reader with each magazine completely left as per the paper version. So you are zooming around trying to read paragraphs instead of it being rendered text. Awful.

Retrograde step

Insane that this is now a pdf version of the magazine. You can’t skip to a page and have to zoom in on parts of the print that you want. Add in that the app just force closes 30 seconds after opening and you’ve gone from an app that used to be well worth the subscription costs to one that is getting cancelled at the end of the next cycle.

You f**^#!? it up with the mobile UNFRIENDLY format

Why why why did you change it?
Why why why don’t you listen to the reviews of your customers???
I’ve been a subscriber since issue 001, addicted to my monthly fix. Now I barely read and ONLY because you’ve made it so unappealing/unattractive and difficult with your mobile unfriendly version.
Great editorial and pictures, perfect story telling, passion perfectly in line with what we’re looking for......all ruined because of what?
Shame.

It’s been spoiled

I agree with the others, this used to be a great digital reproduction of the print Evo. Sadly, it has been down graded to a .pdf which is not readable on the devices it is meant for as it just copies the magazine pages. I have therefore cancelled my subscription. Why on earth did you have to spoil it!

Cheap pdf

This used to be a very well laid out and high quality digital publication. Now all we get is a low res pdf. It’s sad as the quality of the magazine hasn’t changed (it’s still the best car mag around) but reading on a device is now detracting from their work.

You’ve gone backwards!?

You’ve gone backwards.....?! It’s terrible, why I am I viewing a pdf of the actual magazine and not the prior superior digital version. In 2020 this is very disappointing. I love the content and style of EVO but this is enough for me to revoke the digital subscription and just get the physical magazine version. In 2020 this is very disappointing. I love the content and style of EVO but this is enough for me to revoke the digital subscription and just get the physical magazine print. I thought this was a bug and flagged it with the dev team. Essentially the response I got back is this is how it is now. So I’ve now got to manually zoom in (on iPhone). You’ve returned to a gen1 reading app from 2010. Top Gear, Car all offer a better experience. Very disappointing approach from such a great publication.

Well and truly off the boil

I recently cancelled my subscription after being a reader since Evo launch in 1998. For me the magazine is a shadow of its former self. Considering its the only performance car magazine, I'm disappointed that all road tests now carried out by the title lack performance data - in-gear stats, etc. - that Autocar and other titles offer. Yes, the content is well written, but sorry guys, other magazines are equally so. I lament the passing of Performance Car magazine - and its brief relaunch a few years back - which covered all the bases I think you should. Until you bring those tests back, I won't be returning to the Evo fold.
Now having a Readly subscription which allows access to European magazines, it is shocking how poor this title is in the thoroughness of road tests and quantity and variety of cars tested. I suggest Evo takes a look at titles such as Auto Bild Sportscars and Sport Auto to see how it's done properly.

Excellent EVO content, terrible app

I really like reading EVO, having been a reader for many years. The content is great and the pictures are superb so props to the writers, editors and photographers for the great job they do.
However, this app is appalling. Almost every time I open it, it goes to the magazine month selection page instead of the mag I’m currently reading. Then clicking in it always takes me to the top of the last article I was reading, despite how far into it I was. This is in stark contrast to ‘other’ car magazine apps I read that load straight into the page and the spot I was at when I last had the app open, no matter how long ago this is.
Seriously EVO, get this sorted out pronto, it’s shockingly poor and I’m now at the point where I get so annoyed I am seriously considering not bothering.
Oh, and an update for the iPhone X wouldn’t go amiss either.

Poor

Edit:Changing review to one star. Won't download any content at all, no customer service at all. Had an automated response that I'd have to wait weeks for help due to a change of customer service providers. Apple can't help because the content comes from the EVO servers.
Disgraceful, DO NOT SUBSCRIBE!
I love the magazine and have subscribed in print and digitally for many years. The problem I have is the app. I don't really like the drip feed layout but one can get used to that. What I don't understand is why articles take so long to download. They're basically just words and pictures so why take so long?

2017-03-18

Content good, app abysmal

There are many EVO readers out there, myself included, who will overlook the quality of the app most of the time because the quality of content just about balances it out.
It remains extremely frustrating, however, that some simple media fixes have not been carried out.
Why, for example, give us a grid-frame of 4 photos in an instagram-style grid that does not expand sufficiently when you tap the frame? The photos remain in the frame, not even significantly magnified. What is the point of a detail shot if I can't expand the photo properly to see and appreciate the detail? That really is pointless. I'd rather have 4 separate clickable photos, than 1 cobbled together hipster fail.
Come on, evo, you are testing your readers' patience with sloppy art direction!

A big improvement

I found it very frustrating with the previous app that when viewing the pictures the text comments would cover up most the image. Thankfully that's been remedied here and the scrapbook function I find a particularly useful addition. A search function for articles within the app (without having to be taken to the EVO website) would be a useful next update.

At least this one works

The previous version was frustrating because it kept crashing on my S6 Edge Plus. I'm happy because at least this works on all my platforms and devices. 2 negatives so far: 1. The app delivered the latest issue 2 days after I had received my print copy in the post. 2. I've noticed previously read issues have an 'updated' caption on their thumbnails. It would be nice to see when you go into that issue what has been updated to save going through all the pages again. Maybe on the contents?

Same again

I was going to write a review but others have covered it. Review number three is exactly what I was going to write. Funny thing is the same thing happened a couple years ago when updated the app the last time. It was a shambles for about six months. Sack the QA team.

New new format worse than the new format

So first we had a magazine... then some bizarre article based stream that I needed to download each item for... and now it's less than the print edition back to some vestige of a magazine format.
At least the last format gave access to interactive content with videos and other non-printable content.
Seriously, why have this instead of the print edition? Anyone? Anyone? Nope, no reason at all. So back to the print edition on an occasional basis.... this is just rubbish.
Axe Bandito
2016-09-18

Slight improvement but still frustrating to use

I had high hopes when I saw that there was a new Evo app. I do like the fact that I can now browse am edition instead of the old blog format, but there are a couple of absolute basic failures that have carried over.
1. When swiping down an article, the slightest move left to right of my thumb changes the page to the next or previous article.
2. Number 1 is annoying enough, but when I go beck to the article I was reading, it's lost my place and put me back to the start.
And for these two reasons alone, I will continue not to bother with this app. I wrote similar reviews over the last two years, but clearly whoever has developed the app doesn't actually use it themselves or bother with reading the feedback left on here. Yet ironically, I'm here leaving a review that the development team won't read because the app keeps hassling me to leave one.
So once again, here's hoping that one day someone might sort this mess out, but I don't think I'll hold my breath.

Brings Nothing New; Old Clonker

This new app has gone into reverse gear and back itself into a wall. It looks like the folks at Evo responsible for this side of the business just have no real map for getting where they need to on this app. This is slow, lacks imagination and adds nothing to the print version. In addition to all the other negative reviews (with which I agree) I would add that this app makes no use of video, sound or any interactive features. If you are going to have an app, then you should be making use of all the add benefits that such a medium allows. Not just repeat the print stories and photos without any enhancement whatsoever. No value add here. Bit of an old Clonker.

Needs a fair bit of work...

As an avid car guy and equally as big of an evo reader I am quite disappointed by the new update to the app. Working in the app/tech startup industry, I was very much looking forward to trying the most portable library of my favourite publication. However, upon downloading the app doesn't seem a step forward from the previous version and in many ways is slower, more clunky and less of now. It seems to be a hybrid of 2 types of publication app but has no clear identity and UX of something understandable.
Why when we download a magazine are we taken to the cover article, I guess this is a loading screen mechanism but why need to download the whole magazine at all? Why can't we simply choose what articles we want and create our own evo for that month? Also the need to download is frustrating for storage, why not just stream a title unless we the users/readers ask to download as when you have read something you don't really need it and with no clear way to delete what you have downloaded!
Come on guys this should be the benchmark for magazine apps on iOS, just like the quality of print is of the magazine. I hope this gets fixed soon...

SACK THE DEVELOPER, EVO

Every time I use this app there is something wrong. Currently, having just upgraded to an annual subscription, I am rewarded with no access whatsoever and a load of tatty ads which benefits the developer, not the reader. No amount of app closures, iPad restarts, app deletion and reloading fixes it. Previously, it has been a case of every article I open, opens the same one, until there is a change in the wind direction. And someone keeps insisting on putting black text on dark backgrounds WHICH WE CAN'T READ. We enjoy your work, Evo and on the occasions I can read your articles, enjoy it, but your developer is publishing an app which isn't fit for purpose - you are wasting your money with them. And this has clearly been going on for a long time. Please terminate their contract and reappoint a company technically capable and that cares.

Laggy, swipe navigation ridiculous, article ordering totally random

Amazing photography and excellent write ups screwed up by a poor quality app that makes it difficult to navigate, is terribly laggy on an iPad 3 and the article ordering makes no sense.
Navigation is provided by swiping left right and centre, quite literally. Swipe left accidentally and right again to go back to where you were but you can't; it takes you to the beginning of the article. Swipe left or right and be surprised by what's next; there's no indication where you are or where you will be if you swipe. It all seems random and who thought swipe-navigation like this is a good idea?
The previous app was much better with only one issue: it had to be open to download an issue, that's it. This one? Absolutely terrible and makes the magazine almost unreadable.

On the road to nowhere

What a disaster guys! Things were working so well and then you do this to yourselves. I'm all for trying something new but in the end I'm subscribing to a magazine and not a website. There's nothing to look forward to when the odd new article is added each day or every few days. Not only that, when I try to read those articles on the tube, the app constantly refreshes back to the start of the article and I have to look for where I was before. Why do I get the impression you're deliberately trying to kill your app so that we go back to the printed mag? Why else would someone have thought this was a good idea?!
UPDATE: I give up guys. I paid for a subscription to a magazine, not random articles uploaded at various intervals. I want a refund. How do I get it?

Backward EVOlution

I have been an avid EVO reader for many years. I used to love waiting for my copy of EVO to pop through the letter box in its signature grey plastic sleeve. I like many of you out there really enjoy the quality of writing and photography in EVO and the anticipation of waiting for the next copy to hold and read in my hands was an intrinsic part of the whole experience. Times change and I accept that digital copy is the future, a future which I think EVO were at the forefront of with their previous version of EVO digital. They managed to combine the look and feel of the original magazine along with cool video content and the original monthly (4 weekly) anticipation of the original magazine version so many of us love. This latest version feels more like a website. The great content remains but the magic has gone.
Just like when they changed from thick glossy print to thinner less glossy print with the original magazine this latest digital version represents a significant step backwards for EVO and EVO fans.

What a disappointment

Firstly, this app does not work properly. It does not work at all on iPhone and continually crashes on iPad. It also needs to download content as you open new articles, so if you plan to read offline you need to open everything beforehand. And there is no logic to the content order at all. Just released as the stuff gets written. Not good and this alone means I have gone back to the paper version
More fundamentally, the content is so much poorer than before. From a truly excellent interactive magazine to one that is just average and offers no more than the paper version with website back-up for current stuff. No doubt it is much more cost effective to produce and could have been much worse - look what happened to the Octane interactive magazine - but don't pretend this is consumer led or a step forward. It is not. A great pity given how good the magazine and previous app are.

2013-03-17

Very disappointing

As an Evo print subscriber, I was chuffed to see that Evo Interactive is a free app. I should have dug deeper before bothering to install (for all of 2 mins before removing). No real content, just basically a shopfront for the digital issues.
Considering that I already subscribe to the magazine, I would have hoped the digital versions would be available to me at minimal - or no - extra cost. I can't see that as an option.
Why? Well, the cost of providing it to me as an existing paper subscriber is £0. It's already produced. Would I pay extra for the videos? Yes. But given my existing subscription, certainly not £2.99 - especially when many videos are available freely on the web.
So, if you don't already subscribe to the "old-school" print Evo then this app makes sense. But for me - and many others judging by the comments - it's a choice of one or the other.
And that's not the only reason for the single star rating - I just don't think a dedicated "storefront" is a good use of storage on my iPad.

It doesn't work!

Bought a subscription for the app through iTunes but have been unable to actually activate it and download anything - all magazines still show "Buy" next to them. After a week of emailing Evo support, I got the following information from them:
"We are aware of a problem that some customers, such as yourself, who have purchased subscriptions through iTunes are experiencing. This error causes the subscriber to fail during subscription recognition, so that no issues become available on an active account. We are currently working on a fix for this however do not have a timeframe for when the update that will resolve this will be released. In the meantime we would recommend that you request a refund for the iTunes subscription from Apple."
Just have a battle now with Apple to try and get a refund. Not happy

GOOD BYE PRINTED MEDIA

Update 7 Feb,
Still awesome! Subscription works!
Update 21 Nov
I love this app, good to see streamed movies in the Art of Noise issue, to the guys with the low scores stating problems with opening, is your iPad jailbroken? Mine was earlier this year and it caused no end of problems, videos crashed, crash to homescreen etc. this app alone is what made me go back to unjailbroken state.
This is it, the benchmark, the Veyron of iPad apps. This is what I expected when the iPad was announced over a year ago. The format is perfect, videos where you hope for them, fantastic photography and very well written articles.
Bravo chaps, bravo..
Update 22 June.
The latest update has fixed most of the issues I previously had, the app support guys are very helpful, for me the movies sometimes work, sometimes do not, but for me being able to read the magazine is enough, still worth the price. Maybe an update could provide online movie links instead to reduce the file size?

Great, but not the full mag!

The digital version of Evo's fantastic mag is very slick, polished and seductive, and it's a really enjoyable way to experience the well edited and engaging content. The app really shows off the photography and videos well. However, having previously bought the paper magazine every month, I do now miss some of the content at the back of the magazine such as the classifieds, which don't feature in this digital edit. It would be great if these back pages could be included too, even if just in a basic, non interactive form. The track guides, buying guides, travel, speedshop, workshop and knowledge sections all seem to be missing - some of the best components of the magazine, in my opinion!

Some good ideas but need work

It's a really nice app to look at and has some really good ideas but need a bit more effort to make it a 5* app. The image quality is really high and the integrated videos are a nice idea. Two main quibbles I have are firstly the size of magazines are over 300Mb and I think is due to having the videos downloaded directly to the iPad. If you have a small capacity iPad it can fill up your device quickly, it would be nice if they would add an option to not download the videos and just stream them instead. My iPad is always online via Wifi so would not be an issue. The second comment is that the moving through pages is not very intuitive, I think they should keep it in a magazine style so you just flick left and right to go through the pages and remove the up down method for digging in deeper into the articles. You have the contents page which is selectable so they don't need to separate the articles like they have.
Have a look at the free sample magazine before buying an issue to make sure you can get on with the app.

Great magazine translated into a great App.

EVO was one of the first apps I downloaded when I got my iPad. I have been reading the print version for ages and couldn't wait to see how it translated to this new medium. I was not disappointed. Cliche or not, it was everything I hoped for and more.
The excellently written reviews and editorial from the paper mag are all here along with stupendously gorgeous photography on the awesome iPad screen - it feels like they were made for one another. There's also a good mix of videos thrown in. To see and hear the cars actually being driven and the enjoyment on the driver's face brings you closer than ever to the thrill of driving.
The app is full of nice little touches, for example in one issue you could pick keys out of a bowl to watch video clips of the cars starting up and revving, makes you feel there is a lot of care, attention and talent thrown into each issue.
If you're a fan of the magazine or just looking for a great iPad performance car magazine then I urge you to give it a try, I sincerely doubt you'll be disappointed.
Keep up the great work!

1ST CLASS!

As with other leading newspapers (Times/Sunday Times) Evo Mag has set the standard for an electronic version of the already excellent standard publication. What you don't get with the standard magazine are the high quality photos and videos which make the iPad version so much more enjoyable to view and use. OK so it's not yet perfect but at least the guys at Evo and Dennis Publishing have seen the future for quality magazines and it will get even better.
A first class first effort and well worth waiting for the 508bm to download. Just one tip to anyone disgruntled if it doesn't open first time - double tap the home button of your iPad and close down all the other apps which may be running in the background before opening the Evo app
