Lacks spaced repetition system

Study lists are useless without some way of tracking progress. In fact, if you are serious about studying kanji, there is only one study list: all of the kanji in the RTK book. What you need is for the app to help you organise which Kanji to review over time, which is exactly what the spaced repetition system does.
Also we found the stroke order to be different to what is shown in the book for some kanji (e.g. convex).
Finally, being the official app and not having the original RTK stories makes it feel overpriced, especially when spaced repetition is available in other free apps.

Use this with the book

I would have liked an Anki-style priority system with the flash cards in this app (ie shuffling the deck around based on your results) but otherwise it’s absolutely perfect to use in tandem with the book. I also highly recommend using a cheap stylus (saves a lot of paper!).

100% excellent

I can't fault it. This app has made reviewing the kanji an enjoyable process I consider it an essential companion to the books.
Thank you!!!

Missing some Kanji

Considering your paying out more than you would for the average app here, I expected that they would include the new 196 kanji they have added to the updated book.
This app feels abandoned by the developer and author.
Otherwise this would be the perfect supplement to the perfect kanji learning method.
PLEASE UPDATE

No spaced repetition

This app claims to be more fully featured than the competition but in fact it lacks any spaced repetition system (SRS), which I would say is a pretty basic feature of any flash card app these days. You can compile your own sub-lists of cards, but the only thing you can then do with them is go through the whole list, optionally in a random order. The stroke order animations are great, as is having all the data from Hessig's book (minus the stories) in the right order, but the lack of SRS will limit its usefulness, and makes it feel overpriced.

Almost perfect

This is a great app to accompany the remembering the kanji book.
It let's you revise the kanji you have studied already from the book and with rtk 2 included it's also simple to find out the readings if you want to.
I have two problems with the app however.
Firstly trying to add all the kanji from a lesson to a study list sometimes crashes the app.
Secondly, this app is not in line with the latest release of the book (6th edition). This means that the frame numbers are out of sync and there are a few kanji missing from the lessons.
If these two things were rectified in some way I would definitely rate this a five star app. It's already a valuable part of my studies.
(edit- now even better since you can import your reviewing the kanji stories!)
Latest version edit- I've returned to this app after letting my studies slide a bit.
it supports 6th edition now! great!
I would like some sort of srs to be included in the flashcards but I suppose you can't have everything! The ability to draw your kanji now is much appreciated. Great app. You won't get better for rtk!

Major story-space oversight.

The screen space for the kanjis is incredibly poorly designed. Huge areas of white space around the kanji are wasted, a list of primitive elements that takes up twice as much space as needed and yet for the key feature, the major purpose of the app to learn by reviewing and using the RTK stories: a tiny, tiny 3 line space to fit your story in! It's ludicrous!
This means that the actual majority of the time - going by using the precise average length of widely available stories - you have to fiddle about in a micro space just to review the kanji not even fitting on the screen.
Primitive elements could have been relegated to the right of the kanji or option to them turn off.
The new, longer iphone screen benefits the stories and yet not everyone is using one and for everyone else this is the area that is 'cut' for the previously standard iDevice screens - to the small size of the primitive elements in the screenshots.
Compare this to 'Kanji Stories' app where you can add the same stories and you can scroll to see and use the whole screen to see the actual whole story per kanji. And if you do not need a story review then this app doesn't even come close to the flashcards features in 'Japanese' app from Renzo.
Developers were terrible in response, taking several weeks to reply and then only to be very dismissive to politely put facts and then in reply not bothering to respond at all.

Very good

This app is really useful if you are learning from the Heisig books; it helps you to remember your stories, and works as a good flash card system.
Quick note: if you have the newer edition of the book, change it to the newer edition in options! Otherwise some kanji won't appear in the app (I only just realised this)

Compact

I bought the book before the app and made a few hundred flashcards before despairing at the space they take up! I love the fact that I can carry all the kanji in my pocket on my iPod but I've gone back to the cards at home; there seems to be some kinaesthetic benefit to physically holding them. I also find that I absorb them better by writing on paper than the practice pad.

Huh?

While I really appreciate the ability to draw the kanji in the flash cards and check them side by side with the stroke order (it's awesome).... What happened to the tracking of progress for flash cards? Am I just missing it somewhere? Doesn't seem to keep track of where I left off either when I pause a study session. Please bring that back!

Pretty sweet

I would give this the full five stars, but there doesn't appear to be a way to track when you have finished a lesson other than to complete the flash cards for it... And occasionally they reset to 0! So you can't rely on it!. Anyway, epic app. Oh and it can replace the book... Just import the stories which you can get off revtk forums...

Great companion to the book

This is helpful all round and compliments the book very well. Importantly, you can access the stroke order animations from inside the flash card environment or through a simple standalone look up facility. The flash card function itself is pretty good really and kanji can be added to user defined lists individually or by RTK lesson blocks. I have been using it in combination with other more sophisticated repetition systems but am finding that I don't really need to as it works well in isolation for me. Please note you CAN now set the flash cards to show either the keyword meaning or the kanji first. Basically, if you're finding the Heisig method is working for you, it's well worth giving this app a try! It would be useful to be able to export user generated notes/stories from the app to somewhere safe on the desktop. I've not found a way to do this yet (but think it can be done the other way round) - perhaps something that can be added in a future update...

Disappointed

Quite disappointed by this, I was hoping to use it to replace my book & paper approach but it neither has the stories from the book, nor does it let you draw the kanji in the flash card environment, so unfortunately it doesn't offer anything that the other numerous other apps don't already do better. Maybe I was being naive, after all - the book costs 10x more than the app.

Problems

You can't sync your stories from the Reviewing The Kanji website. No way I'm typing them all up again!
Also, it's easier to study RTK 1 from this app rather than RTK 2. If you want to study RTK 2, I'd recommend Anki instead!

Worth Every Penny

Remembering the Kanji is a tremendous help when remembering how to write kanji. If you follow the guidelines of the book at your own pace, you will be reading relatively quickly.
I just wish that this app had an iPad UI as well as an iPhone & iPod interface.

Great reference tool and companion to the Heisig books

If you have the followed the book Reviewing the Kanji of James W Heisig I think you will enjoy this application. I went through the first book and I am now busy with the volume II and I really like to look up kanjis. It is so easy, with just one touch to flip between RTKI and RTKII (RTK is Remembering the Kanji).
Heisig did a great job in creating an unique system to memorise the Kanji and where RTKI is focussed on keywords and mnemonic hints, RTKII is the same list of Kanji but regrouped in a different order. This helps a lot to remember the sometimes confusing readings of a Kanji. Of course you will still need to have the book and follow the method for the best results. Really going through some 2000 kanji and remembering them is not an easy task but Heisig made it possible for everybody.
Now this App is not a substitute for the book.
I bought the app and I really like it because of the interface, the ease of looking up kanji and kanji lists. For instance I was looking up freight 貨 today which is number 1010 in lesson 27. I could find it fairly quickly by lesson or by stroke number. on the RTK I card I get the keywords in English to help memorise it like change 化 and shells 貝.
Now switching to RTK II with one touch gives me the On-yomi (音読み)which is カ. And I get an example: 貨物 freight to help put the kanji in contest. Great, of course having the book I would get the hint, that this kanji is part of a so called for convenience sake "pure group", together with 化 (1008) 花 (1009) 靴 (1894), they all share the same on-yomi カ. That easier to remember, than going through each kanji without a clue...
Especially now hat is on sale I think it is a good deal, it is a very useful companion to the books, plus the money will go to finance research at the university in Japan where Heisig is teaching.
The only thing, it got a flashcard system that I decided not to use because there are many other better Flashcard apps out there, and I found a bit troublesome to input notes on the iPhone for all the cards especially knowing that there is no back up solution yet, but for the rest I can only recommend this little App.

Missing Functions

Some essential things missing
1) Search function
2) Keyword prompt flashcard review - i.e. flashcard's that pop up with the keyword for the chapter you want to review just the way you would learn from the text book
