Does exactly what it needs to

Great app that does exactly what it should. Never have any issues with planning journeys, buying tickets or checking train times. The app is the most reliable source of train progress and due times.

Amateur

5is app is awful. It is complicated , confusing and requires you to search for and choose trains at least twice. Apps are supposed to be simple. Heres a suggestion call up timetable choose train, choose return if required, pay, download ticket to app and /or receive email with ticket.

Annoying

The app itself isn’t actually that bad. The issue is that they could simply email you your ticket, but instead insist on you downloading an app and creating an account… why, when I only want to make one journey? And if I’m going to have to create this unwanted account, why can’t I authenticate using Apple?

Great way to Buy Tickets

Having the app to keep the tickets is a great idea. It’s so
Easy to buy and use rather than having the paper tickets or trying to load to a card. Only thing I need to remember is my phone charger to ensure I don’t run out of battery 😂

Seems to be 10 years out of date at least

Tried it, purchased tickets, went to download them and add them to Apple Wallet, you cannot. So this will be the first and last time I use Scotrail, unless they add that feature which I believe Trainline have had for over a decade

Booking tickets made simple

The finding and booking tickets is really clear and fast, like how it clarifies what train to look out for if you are not doing the whole route. Multi day ticket booking could be made simpler and easier but that’s my only issue

Reloading Season Tickets

App constantly decides to reload season ticket barcodes when there is no signal… for example when you try to go through the Glasgow central low level barriers. Ticket staff are unhelpful with this and send you back downstairs to join the WiFi, very frustrating…

Really useful app

Easy to download and set up and great for purchasing tickets and checking live times for trains.
I know it’s a bit of a niche suggestion but when booking trains through Glasgow it would be handy if it offered walking times between QS and Central rather than default to bus.

PLEASE MOVE USED TICKETS OFF THE CURRENT TAB

The app is generally fine, but it’s so annoying that a Flexipass with no tickets left on it is still in the “current” tab with no way of deleting it or moving it to expired. Worse still, you have to scroll down to find the current one, rather than its being at the top.

Aweful

Like the app a year one student would produce (apologies to students). Nothing intuitive.
Constant repeated entry of details when you change tabs. Have to change time for service search when you go back in later in the day (unless time travel offered - do they do a flexi ticket for that?). No predictive input or AI logic - at least start with stations within 500 miles of me when I type destinations. You can’t add a ticket to Apple Wallet.
It’s taken the worst features of every travel app in the world and combined them into one.
Poor conductors just shrug and tell you “We know. We get lots of complaints about it.

Barely functional

This really is a badly designed app, what else can we expect from the Scottish government.
Positives are you can buy tickets, but directs via website so actually can’t buy using just the app.
Train times are a handy function
Tickets part is awful, far too many clicks to get to your active ticket, just inefficient and badly designed much like the train service

Very nice App. Quick and easy to install and use. I use the ScotRail App to book all of my train trips now, including trains outside Scotland, as it’s clear and convenient, plus you always get the best prices, including split ticketing, which can save you a lot of money.

Better Than Trailine App

The Trainline app has been updated and is now unusable for the advanced bookings. The Scotrail app works.

2025-01-22

Some constructive criticism

It takes WAY too many clicks to be able to buy a ticket, activate it and scan it at a gate/conductor. There’s probably a number of variables that could be reduced to make this more efficient.
ChrisBallantyne
2025-01-07

Simples!

Download the app in about 30 seconds as there was a queue at the ticket window. Booked and paid for tickets, having registered with the info that auto filled, and was done in under 90 seconds. No need to queue or wait, enough time saved that i had a g&b in the champagne bar. Wish every booking app was this straightforward! Well done Scotrail! Some other web developers may want to take a look and adopt your usability and simplicity.

Update Your Delay Repay

I’ve been use mTicket since Feb 2024, (touch wood) it’s easy to use and reliable. However, I felt let down when I first experienced cancellation and delay and needed to raise delay repay - the journey doesn’t cover mTicket nor flexipass.
Please keep up the good work and fix that asap. Or else, I might move back to Smartcard or even paper ticket!

Annoyingly hard to use for train times or tickets

This app should make it simple to find and get on your next train, but introduces so much unnecessary friction. Sure, you can find train times, but when you’re walking to the station, you don’t need the app to get in the way. And it does. All the time. Constantly blocked with “must select return time” prompt when all you want is the next train. Of course, if you want to weigh up the best of two nearby stations, you’re out of luck, you have to try each journey in turn.
A big selling point of the app is that it’s the place to hold mobile tickets. And yes, it does that. But if you’re looking for a “ticket machine in your pocket”, be prepared to be disappointed. Tickets have to be booked at least ten minutes in advance, so no “turn up at the station and buy a ticket for the train arriving in s couple of minutes”. Maybe you could just buy a ticket for the next train (all day fares) or maybe you can’t, it’s not clear. And if the app will actually sell you a ticket, be prepared for lots of fumbling around to find and activate it.
It’s a great app, really, it just doesn’t meet any of my get-on-the-next-train use-cases.

So far good experience

However, it is not clear when the off pick time is and who is the service provider. Different trains are run by different service providers and the price can be different. You cannot use the ticket purchased from one service provider on the train run by another service provider.

Easy to use

I find the app great, such an improvement on the old ticketed system. All tickets go automatically to mobile so no waste. Searching and purchasing easy. Been enjoying the friends and family discounts - well worth the money if you travel by train at least once a month.
NatBino
2024-05-09

Reasonable functionality

Although the app functions ok it often takes time opening your ticket when required so would be so much better like many flight apps being able to add the ticket to Apple wallet (even if only after activated). I often find my ticket isn't recognised at the station gate but this could be due to that mainly being Inverness so needing updating or replacing its gates.

Very Good App

I use this daily for commuting and often at weekends. It’s a really well designed app and I notice wee improvements all the time. There’s the occasional glitch, but very rare. I also love the ease of booking that comes with the current withdrawal of peak fares - hopefully that continues. Good work ScotRail!

Quick and easy to use

Having the app to buy tickets as well as check future and en route train times is so handy. No longer are my pockets full of paper tickets and I never have to queue for tickets. So helpful! Tickets can be purchased in seconds and are only activated when you’re ready to use them. Flexible and handy!

Excellent App & Easy to use

Generally it’s pretty quick and seamless to buy tickets. Only reason I marked down ever so slightly is it would be good to be able to add more than 1 ticket before payment rather than having to do each transaction individually. And if the ability is already there make it easier to see it!
Gemmaveronica
2024-01-26

Good app with a few issues

Overall the app works really well and has no issues. You can find up to the second updates on when trains are leaving, whether they’re delayed and on what platform you’ll find them. In addition, purchasing tickets is really easy, with the process seamlessly integrating with Apple Pay.
One issue is that in order to see your purchased tickets you need to click “View Ticket”, then select the outward or return journey, then click “Download Ticket” then click “Activate Ticket”. I’d expect to click once, or twice at most to see a ticket and five times seems unreasonable.
Also, the app could have a shortcut for previously viewed, downloaded, activated tickets to save you having to navigate through the app to find them when you’re standing at the barrier with an angry mob behind you.
Still though, it’s very good.

No longer works with Apple Pay or Debit Card

I used this regularly and it was very easy. In the last few weeks it no longer issues the tickets. It goes all the way to processing your ticket.. then hangs. Tried using a different card, tried submitting a credit card- same result. Apple Pay works perfectly for other purchases and there are funds a plenty in the account. I used the ScotRail site to submit a detailed description of the problem but when I tried to submit it it would not accept a click on the button to accept their terms and conditions. Using an iPhone with latest iOS. Suspect that the site is now incompatible with latest version of iOS.

A few glitches but otherwise very serviceable

This has generally been a very good app, some UI glitches around start time of journey if you want to travel now, but biggest issue seems to be with the latest release where Apple Pay seems to be broken. Confirmation tone post payment but then it just hangs and never completes the purchase.

Great App

I purchased a Senior Rail Card Oct 2022 online which was very user friendly and I’ve been using the Scot Rail App fairly regularly ever since.
It’s fast, efficient and even great to use on the run to a station. All the times and info you need are easily accessed and ticket purchase is straightforward. Top marks! Thank you :)

Good app but with some major flaws

I have recently started using the ScotRail app for local journeys with e-tickets. However twice in one day it randomly logged me out, I then didn’t have access to data and the onboard WiFi wasn’t reliable, so this left me trying to prove I had purchased a ticket with an email confirmation as I couldn’t log back in. This is a major flaw with the app, as although ScotRail says you can use it offline, that doesn’t help if it randomly logs you out of your account when you have no internet to log back in. My recommendation is to use paper tickets or e-tickets if you can purchase them from a alternative ticket retailer.
Tom_199611
2023-10-01

Not as slick as Trainline

This is is powered by Trainline but with less functionality eg Apple Wallet but it saves the TL booking fee. This is handy when you need your ticket out of signal.
As others note it’s lots of clicks to buy a ticket which for commuters is annoying; even more so that the new off peak deal means the flexipass carnet style convenience which ideal for irregular WFH trips has been retired. Please add flexipass/carnet style ability.
80amadeus
2023-07-31

Glitchy and Frustrating

The app is massively annoying if you are using it to travel on any kind of schedule.
• You will be randomly logged out at various times, even after activating your tickets.
• Tickets will be purchased and downloaded, even activated, but then will glitch and repeatedly display “try again later” messages when attempting to view it.
• The times shown on the app will occasionally not match the train times themselves.
• It will prevent you from buying tickets despite seemingly no problems with the train schedules or services. This was verified across different devices, accounts and payment methods.
The UI is simple and easy to use and there are opportunities for cheaper tickets (though this is arguably manufactured scarcity since they could offer this with physical tickets but choose not to) but it is routinely problematic and unreliable.
RAEaglesham
2023-07-20

Service design

App does job but it seems to need about 10 clicks to buy the same ticket each day. It can’t be too hard to identify a pattern of someone wanting to repeat select today’s date, select inbound time, select outbound time, search tickets, select journey, select ticket, scroll and buy ticket, download ticket, view ticket, activate ticket, confirm activate ticket. How about a ‘buy and activate that ticket you do daily’ button? Very helpful when rushing for train…
Manch2023
2023-07-05

Excellent for frequent travellers

Great that you can buy tickets in advance so you don’t have to queue. Usually works great but sometimes I have noticed that I get told to pick my ticket up at the station. There doesn’t appear to be a reason for this and would be good if there was a clear reasoning behind what journeys need collected and what don’t.

Refunds and changes are impossible

I travel by train most days a week and buy my ticket the night before. Sometimes plans change on the day and I am not able to stick to my travel plans. My ticket costs £7.80 but a refund costs £10!!! How can this be justified? The change ticket option doesn’t work either to change to another day. I thought the app was more convenient but this is causing me more hassle than it’s worth. If I buy a paper ticket I can get a refund or change it. Please look at making tickets more flexible of make it clear that you cannot get a refund before buying.

Unreliable

While generally okay, and as mentioned on other reviews, the app suffers from a few UX problems:
1) having to select a train by time rather than by route (as would be at station machines)
2) taking about half a dozen jabs at the screen to actually display a purchased ticket
3) lack of receipts (and therefore proof of purchase should phone die)
4) randomly logs user out without a quick mechanism to log back in (e.g biometrically etc)
NicknameIsStupid!!!
2023-06-19

Nearly there …

This app is really good and so much easier than having to queue. A few more ticket types eg child tickets would be good plus also the ability to go across Glasgow and to Edinburgh on one ticket - just now you have to buy two separate tickets (into Glasgow central and then from Queen street) and it’s more expensive than the paper version.
hooliob
2023-05-31

Keeps kicking me out

The app has recently developed a bug where it kicks you out as you are trying to download a ticket. It then won’t allow log in on mobile data, and have only been able to get it working once I’ve connected to onboard Wi-Fi (not station Wi-Fi). This means that I’ve had to plead my case with ticket staff showing them email confirmations and proof that I paid for the ticket, which they are usually extremely reluctant to accept as proof of the ticket. This is a policy that should be reviewed until the app (which is being pushed by scotrail as the best most reliable way to buy tickets) actually becomes reliable.

Why did you change Live Trains?

Live trains used to be so useful for checking departure board at a station, but inexplicably it now requires you to put in the end destination. And removed the ‘arriving from’ function.
Example: When picking up a friend travelling from Glasgow to Paisley, I could either see arrivals from Glasgow or just the departure board.
But now I have to specify whether it’s an Ayr, Ardrossan, Largs, Gourock or Weymss Bay train to find out when the next train from Glasgow arrives! 🤦🏼‍♂️

2023-02-21

Unreliable when you need it most

Overall a decent enough app but with two major flaws.
1—after a certain point, you’re unable to buy a ticket for a journey. I’m assuming it’s too close to the departure time. But that’s when people arguably need it most – when they’re short of time. Is the alternative to just get the next train? Not really great customer service.
2—the app has a tendency to log you out and you only realise this when the time comes to use it, at a ticket barrier. When you can’t log back in with Glasgow central’s non-existent WiFi or awful data coverage, having to rely on a kind hearted station worker to let you pass is again, less than ideal.

Stops working in glasgow central

I’ve been using this app for awhile and I really like buying my tickets on my one to save paper. However for the past few weeks every time I go into central station and open the app to get my return ticket, it kicks me out and it’s impossible to get back on while I’m the station because I can’t get on my mobile provider signal. So I keep having to plead my case that I do have a ticket, I’m just locked out. This is totally rubbish. Until they fix this I’m gonna have to go back to the ticket machine. What a hassle!!
powergrrl
2023-01-22

Useless for receipts

If you’re just wanting to buy a ticket and don’t need a receipt for reclaiming your travel for work or business the app is really convenient and is great when the ticket machine doesn’t work and for avoiding queues at the machines. However if you do need a receipt they send you a 5 page email with the invoice spread across all the pages. Environmentally crap and really annoying. So I’m back to getting paper tickets for work and hoping that the ticket machine works.

Useful

Good app to buy and use m tickets. Not so useful for quickly finding trains. It keeps your latest journeys but I miss being able to check railboards at nearby (and saved) stations. There are separate apps for that but it would be nice to have it all together.
At the moment I need three apps for rail travel:
- One (currently ByTrain) for seeing times of arrivals and departures (but I understand ByTrain will stop working next year).
- Another for buying and using tickets.
- And another for my railcard.

Please reverse the live times update

I would previously have given this at least 4 stars as it used to be a really useful app as you could very easily check the latest live departures from a station, but since the recent update, you’re now required to enter details of an entire journey in order to do this, and you can’t save multiple stations on the live times page any more, which has basically removed the most useful feature of the app.

Pretty solid

The app is really good. I use the live times often and the mobile tickets are great! The ticket machine at our local station is often out of order so this helps avoid the purchase queue at the end of the journey.
My only small gripe is that you can’t buy mobile tickets if your journey requires you to switch station mid-journey. They also frequently fail for journeys that require a change of train in the same station. It’s a bit inconvenient but overall the app functions really well.

Love times useless

Used to be a super app to check live times at stations but this upgrade has made it clunky and basically useless. To check between departure or arrival times at a station you now need to put in a full journey instead of just clicking on any station that you’re interested in. You can’t switch between journeys or stations and can only have one saved. Please just return live times to proper functional use, the way it was before this update. It’s absolutely useless the way it is.

Don’t like the new style live times

Why does the app make me do it in two steps now, first enter the departure station, load all the departures from that station (amd save it as a favourite) - and only then allow me to select the desti ation station. Now I’ve got all the departures from the Queen Street station in my favourites and I definitely don’t need it.

In need of modernisation

There are a few annoying issues with this app on iOS. When you access the app from search, the Cancel/back button sits in the same place as the iOS button to return to the search, making it hard to go back in the app. Gesture control would be useful - swiping left and right to go back/forward would be a good way of getting round the above issue.

Really bad interface design

Has anyone tested this design? If you’ve opened the app using the iPhone search function, then when you’re in the ticket screen you can’t click ‘cancel’ or ‘back’ without accidentally tapping the iOS ‘search’ text that takes you back to the search screen.
So many times I’ve tried to use the app and its design takes me back to the operating system.
Tiny buttons and a confusing ticket system that needs too many clicks to enable a ticket. Come on, I appreciate the effort but do better.
Never mind the fact that some gates at stations don’t have barcode readers. Today a crowd of us were waiting to get on the platform because neither of the two entry gates had readers on them, and the single member of staff was busy dealing with a deluge of people coming through the other way. Don’t release a feature until the infrastructure can handle it!

ScotRail App

Love the app as it’s very easy to use and user friendly in that you can find what you are looking for very easily. The only downside (hence my 4 stars)is that you cannot get your tickets refunded through it, at least not the ones I buy on a daily basis, but have to phone customer service and sometimes it’s not worth the bother.

Best App but..

The App is amazing!! But if the Delay Repay can be processed in the app while having the ability to track the previous claims, that’d be great!
And all that’s rather than the extremely expensive and unreasonable service! So, it’s more expensive to go from Home at Caldercruix to work at Uphall than going to Ayr? Traveling almost half the country west is cheaper?! Huge budget going for just the trains.

Use this for my commute but could be better

Generally fine. Would be good if it would allow for bulk buying tickets. Also tickets don’t always expire once you have used them which makes it more difficult to find the ticket you need. Would rather not have to download each ticket separately as internet is not always available at the train stations. Would be best if tickets would automatically download after purchase. As mentioned in an other review you’re left with no option if your phone runs out of battery. Another point that could make the app more useful is if it could tell you if the train you’ve bought a ticket for has been cancelled etc. The app also logs you out at strange times (although rare) which, if you can’t remember your password or don’t have access to the internet makes all of your ticket purchases worthless.

Easy, quick and better than the service (sometimes!)

Easy to use, quick and very convenient for buying tickets and getting myself passed the horrendous queues which usually form at the machine and guards sited at a stations exit.

Rubbish app, use at your peril.

App is pretty flakey at best. First time I used it I was on a train (station I get on doesn’t have a ticket machine) and heading towards glasgow (which has barriers and a long wait for tickets - presumably to discourage non payment) with no conductor on the train I tried this app. I had to buy only in advance so had to work out return times and after a fashion managed to secure an e-ticket.
Similar situation today. Except this time it decides I need to collect the ticket from a station and I need to show a card (I use Apple Pay) and now I can’t get a ticket.
All I can say is this app is less than useless. There is no bloody need to demand timings of train you are getting. Just make it the same as the machines at the station. Also. Either give e-tickets and promote a ticketless service or don’t, what not to do is arbitrarily make it an option.
This will be deleted the second I get my ticket sorted and I’ll chalk this up as yet another good idea poorly implemented by old men who don’t really understand technology properly.

Signs you out for no reason

On approach to Glasgow Queen St your phone loses signal going through tunnel. When you open the app it requests you to sign back in, every time. Very inconvenient standing on the platform trying to get logged back in. The app doesn’t save the password either and as the signal is so poor inside the station you’re waiting a few minutes on the email coming through to reset password. How about letting you add tickets to wallet in iPhone? Not the best app when either in a rush for a train or trying to disembark

Does the job

But I noticed that it’s hard to get the cancel button top-left to recognise my tap. Hitting it frequently it takes. It’s an iPhone 12 mini if that helps. Eg. From train list select Live Times. Cancel is verrrrry close to the iPhone time display. Too high and you get the Notifications pull-down. Too low and you miss the cancel

DK

Generally OK but issue if your phone runs out of power before your return trip with no alternative way of getting your ticket. Also the app should know that you have a valid railcard rather than being asked to present this sometimes when travelling and conductors don’t scan it instead you have to call up the ticket portion even though the details are below the barcode. Hopefully teething troubles that will get ironed out.

Most Recent Update is Terrible

This may be a bug, or for some reason an intentional feature of the app, but with the latest version of the app you cannot use it using a data connection, either 4G or even 5G. It works perfectly fine when connected to WiFi, but walking to the station I’m reliant on data, and sometimes a data connection is faster than the onboard WiFi. Honestly hope this is sorted soon, better to just use the website.

Really handy for tickets

The new app is great as you can purchase tickets easily and as long as you’ve got your phone you don’t need to worry about losing TM your ticket! The only downside I have experienced is when I checked for tickets on a Sunday morning and it defaulted to Mondays times without me realising so I could not get the train and had to go for a bus instead, making me slightly late for my shift volunteering at the peacock shelter in Dunfermline.
