Good for suggestions but can’t trust it

Use it to suggest alternative routes but live updates don’t work. Been sent to wrong stop, cancelled trains, sent to buses that are diverted. Hopeless. Don’t rely on it

Almost lost a job for being late

Hi! I m writing to offer some feedback I would really like to be fixed.
I recently started a job and I travel from Canning Town to Denmark hill. I always leave on time. The app offers a route through Canada Water station, however the gap between the train arriving to Canada Water and me needing to get the train to Clapham is calculated way too short. I end up running from platform to platform and the train doors shutting in front of my eyes. Got told off at work few times and it was very unpleasant.

Refreshes constantly

Every time I switch apps I have to start what I’m doing again, not useful for travelling around a city. The cookie ‘choices’ pop up returns every single time you start the app if you have selected only necessary cookies, making it essentially forced usage.

Bus timings

I don’t know if it’s not this app’s fault or what. But it always shows wrong times of buses especially slough to Windsor. If it’s saying bus is at 6:20 then bus will arrive at 6:08 or 9 something and then it suddenly changed the time on the app as well. That doesn’t make sense like I start getting ready and doing everything after checking time on app. And if it changes anything it ruin my whole schedule sometimes I’m late for my work. Today 21 December on Sunday it was saying bus timing at 6:28am and I was at bus stop at 6:18am and then the bus came (703) at 6:59am. Like what is it I can’t understand if there’s not any bus in morning why this app showing me while I’m at my home. Really upset I had to kept standing on bus stop for almost 40mins in this weather when it’s super cold and dark outside. Rubbish app

Consistently wrong about transit times

Title says it all, consistently telling you in London that a bus will be 10 minutes away, bus never comes, then the app updates and says the next bus is 20 minutes away. Consistently happens with Citymapper now. Never seems to happen with Google Maps so deleting Citymapper and moving to Google Maps now.

Love this app but couple of suggestions

I've been using this app for many years and absolutely love it! There are a couple of things that should be simple changes but would make a big difference I think. Firstly, when you're in travel mode (in London), meaning on a journey, and you want to look at the tube map, the only way I found to do that was to go back and loose your journey. Unless you have no signal, in which case the option comes up. After closing the map your last journey comes back up but not your options just the one selection you last opened. There should be a way to see the tube map without having to loose your journey options.
The other thing is that when you're abroad and you would like to check a journey back at home, the app switches cities without asking you whether you want to. I find that very frustrating and unnecessary. It's brilliant that the option is there but there should be a question first: would you like to switch cities?
Thanks!

Constantly Late Because of Inaccurate Bus Times 😡

I’m honestly very frustrated with this app. I rely on Bus Mapper to get to work, and 85–86% of the time it gives me the wrong timings. It shows a bus arriving in, say, 19 minutes, so I plan my walking time accordingly. But when I step outside, the bus has already passed! Other times, the app suddenly changes and says the bus is coming in 20 more minutes — completely different from what it showed a few minutes earlier.
Because of these constant inaccuracies, I’m late for work most days. Only about 13% of the time does the app give correct information and I manage to arrive on time. That’s unacceptable for an app that’s supposed to provide real-time bus tracking.
If you need to be on time, I don’t recommend relying on this app. It’s unreliable, inconsistent, and stressful to use. I’m switching to another app that uses direct TfL data instead.

Best app I’ve got!

I’ve been using city mapper for around 4yrs now, in several different cities and it is by far the best route helping application I’ve used. It is very accurate and I’ve never had any issues at all. A few times, what looked the place to get on a particular bus was slightly different to what the app said, but I kept going to the place indicated, and it has always been correct. I’ve so much confidence in it I will consider that I am wrong if I believe something different to what is indicated. The timings are accurate and the logic in planning routes is so, so good. You can pick up a later trip when you’re in a trip, but didn’t start it at the time and it will pick up that you’re on the trip already. It is my favourite app!

Getting better again

Edit: I had of course already used the report route option. In fact, sometimes this app remembers that H&C exists and doesn't tell me to change over irrationally now, so it seems they actually
listened. It's still a bit hit and miss for me, but I'll change my score to reflect this change.
Original:
Since the start of the year, the recommended routes have been overly complicated. It suggests so many changes that shave off less time than is worth it. Instead of keeping you on direct trains, it suggests you get off them to do some insane route. I think there should at least be an option to make it be normal.

Essential but slightly flawed

I’ve use Citymapper since its early days to organise my travel in London and most of the time it is impressively accurate. When it’s not, it’s often down to data problems from LT.
Recently London Overground lines were given individual names to make navigation easier. Citymapper promptly updated its icons and alerts. However, before this change I had saved Overground as a favourite. Now that it is split into separate lines it seems impossible to remove the entry from the favourites list.
I emailed customer support but haven’t received any response, and despite several further app updates the problem is still there. The lack of response from support is more annoying than the issue itself.
Please respond Citymapper!

Latest versions cause phone to heat up

For the last six months or so, the app will semi-regularly lock up. It usually occurs after setting up a journey where the app becomes unresponsive. Quitting the app and coming back to it is not enough as it will try to bring back recent journeys which brings about the same issue. It's really bad because the phone heats up and you lose a lot of battery from these episodes.
The only thing I've found that works is fully deleting it and installing it again. This causes all the data on device to be cleared so can be quite disruptive. I've done this three times now and I've reported the bug in the in-app feedback mechanism.
I love Citymapper and have used it for years to get around. The display of possible journeys is second to none. This bug has been frustrating to deal with though!

Amazing

I am actually rubbish at following direction but city mapper is fantastic as it tells you from where time and time and bus taxi or train you need. I mean I am using it now and almost at my destination with plenty of time in my side. It also tells you where your stops are. The very first time I used this was in London in October 2021. Sister in law and I where going to a wedding and we were lost and asked two females for directions. They told us how to get where we needed to go then told us about the city mapper app and said we should download it because it's really good. It's great but everyone absolutely great

Screen freezes/touch screen function doesn’t work

Amazing app for the most accurate live updates, and absolutely cannot do without it. Unfortunately, I have had ongoing issues with this app for the last 2-3 months as the touch screen function doesn’t always work for more than 50% of the time and the page also freezes (for bus times) which I find to be hugely frustrating.
The last few updates have really caused a problem with not being able to search for live updates due to the screen freezing and/or not being to function as a touch screen app. Has anyone else experienced this?
My iOS is up to date. I’ve tried the app with and without wifi/location on and off and nothing seems to work.
I used to love this app and have recommended it to all my commuter friends and colleagues. I’d love to use it again without the hindering issues and give it the 5 stars it deserves. Please help!

What’s gone wrong?!

I’ve been using CityMapper for so many years I can’t remember how long now and I’ve always loved it. But in the past few days it just freezes on me or allows me to search and then when I click on a suggested travel option the next screen it goes to has a blank map and the info area below is also blanked out. Then it freezes on that screen and won’t let me even go back…. Really frustrating after finding this such a super-reliable app in the past. They’re is no connectivity issue as other apps are working perfectly well. I’ve tried closing it down and then switching my phone on and off but still the same issue. I’ve just deleted it from my phone…. Will download again to see if that helps but I’ve obviously now lost all the data and journey history. Disappointed.

very good navigator; weak UI; limited settings/features; no OTP to remove ads

Citymapper is an excellent navigator and web mapping service for those living in cities due to its leading awareness of public transport. However, the app’s messy and unpolished user interface renders it lacklustre in front of its competitors. Citymapper’s app is due for a UI overhaul if it wishes to keep up with industry norms.
The app also lacks a basic settings page for its users to toggle and personalise various customisation features. This aspect causes Citymapper to fall behind the other apps and services in its space which offer a wide range of personalisation.
Lastly, the app contains ads. Although very few and minimal, users who wish to remove said ads must pay a (small) monthly subscription as the app lacks a one-time-purchase for their removal.

You thought you hated Google Maps.

I’ve been using city mapper for a good few years. During this time the app was decent, giving me accurate directions and making navigation a breeze. Over time however, the app quality has decreased so much that I often find myself resorting to using google maps to get me out of the orientation prison that Citymapper has become. I used to be able to filter for bus only routes but that is now locked behind a paywall. It also can’t navigate anything beyond a main road, god forbid the front of your destination is a little tucked away on a side street, Citymapper will have you walking all around the place. While I admit I could have used my eyes and logic, the whole point of a digital map is that you don’t have to and when I was on the way to an appointment becoming later by the minute, I didn’t think I should need to. Anyway, I assure you, you THINK Google Maps it bad but Citymapper has become a huge downgrade.

Suggestion for an enhancement!

I love Citymapper and have been using ever since it came out. Although there are some bugs now and then making the app crash or freeze or not load the correct train cancellation updates, it’s minor compared to the overall performance of the app.
I did have a thought of what would be even better, super useful and just a great feature to have, is the widget for the phone screen saver, to display any train cancellations. A little reminder to check in the morning before the morning commute… especially in the big city like London and for those of us who are still working in the office full time, would be an absolute saver in making the commute more efficient and less stressful days ahead.
I hope it will “tickle” someone’s brains on the other side and if not, I’m sure something else good will come out of this.
Thanks for your continuous hard work of making this app so great!

Amazing UI

Hi, I just wanted to say that the app is amazing however there a few things that may need improvement. Before I get into those, I just wanted to say that the design of this app is beyond beautiful it is THE BEST UI I have ever seen for a maps app. It is so incredible - there is SOOO much customisation - I haven’t sent this much customisation - FOR FREE - in any app. The few things that need improvement( that should hopefully be fixed in the next update) are that on the live activity it doesn't show the emoji and only shows the default dot. Also, it is quite annoying at times since I am just trying to go home and I know the route and I just need to see the times. It then proceeds to show me the most confusing route I don't even understand. It wants to me to change buses and wait for another bus - just to cross the road. Hopefully it understands I'm able to cross the road. If that just gets fixed then this is a perfect app!

Sorry but the Apple Watch App is worse than a Β version

Always liked the CityMapper App so when when got an Apple Watch decided to utilise the routes going straight to Watch face rather than advertise phone to pick-pockets so paid for the ad-free subscription but that where the good review ends!!! The App now just stalls with an annoying smiling face (we’ve got your money so what you looking at?!). When it does work 1 in 99 times it either has an old route ‘stuck’ in its memory or has chosen an arbitrary alternative route then again the App just hangs. Numerous updates of main App but still no fixing so have now deleted the App & asked for a refund on a broken App that they don’t appear to care enough to fix (& no it’s not Apple’s fault - you’re advertising a working App & for you to build it so it works!!!). Final cherry on the (eat)S🤬it Cake is that the new we’ll show you which way the train comes in on the platform to get the correct end is about 20% correct if that (tested in London/, Berlin & New York). You just ain’t walking the talk yer advertising & for reason I’m out and back to Google Maps. You had it but you lost it you absolute fools…

Wish List

I really like this app, however with current state of transport services and the general uncertainty of life, it would be great to have a way of saying ‘I am now on the suggested mode of transport’. Currently, I have to keep going between starting points to search for the next leg as one mode of transport and another turns out to be delayed or cancelled. I mark the earlier train I have managed to catch, get on it and find all the timings have been automatically changed to those of the next train, on the assumption that the departure time has passed and I’ve missed it. This happens also when I am sitting on a train waiting for it to leave. As soon as the due time passes all the following legs of the journey change to those that reflect the next departure time. Would be a great feature if you could mark a particular journey as the one you’re on and set it!
Thanks for all you currently provide.

Simply The Best

All encompassing. By far the best route planner I've ever used. It will show you the best routes to/from anywhere to somewhere else. You can set home and work destinations for easy access. It will give you alternate routes you'd never have thought of, which are easier and quicker than the one you might have come up with yourself. It will alert you when you need to change or get off. It supports multiple cities. It has integrated tube maps and bus finders. Just perfect. Yet the developers continue to find things to make it better! It is truly amazing and will no doubt change your life.

Mr A Harris

A well constructed ‘user friendly’ menu on this reliable to use App! It was recommended to me by a friend years back and I had started using it to time my journeys around the capital more efficiently. After a user enters a clear entry selection to the desired destination the App will directly show and highlight the route options. It also provides a different transport breakdowns with indicated prices and alternative ways to get there. Find it very helpful and time saving to consider all options before leaving your point ‘A’ of origin. A great App to use and it’s practical nature will help out anyone with their planed journeys!
Thank you Citymapper admin team!!!

Second to none

I’ve been enjoying Citymapper for years, and still I don’t see any serious competition to its truly comprehensive and sensible routing algorithm. In London it’s well-rounded, but it’s also taken pressure off finding transport information in cities like Paris and Warsaw for me (the fewer apps the better). I don’t know how, but even pedestrian directions are superior to those of Google Maps. The multitude of routing options is also a big plus for me, I hate when transport apps insist on select few ridiculous combinations just because in one minute they make sense.
Any improvement ideas? (1) Fare information is wrong on some routes, for instance Clapham Junction to Shepherd’s Bush – it treats Overground and Southern trains differently even though there is no fare difference on that section (ticket gates don’t know which exact train you took and fares are set by route not by provider). (2) I wish there was a way to plan walking tours, i.e. to set a route consisting of multiple points. (3) I sometimes struggle to cancel directions and the app keeps working in the background – there is no easy button to do that. Anyway, those are minor points, and the app is miles ahead of its competition.

Bad route planning and money grabbing

Since this app was updated and taken over by new management it is now shows poor route plans in London. It used to search all possible routes and show a variety of options. This is now hidden unless you pay a monthly subscription. I could accept a yearly sub for say £3 on the basis that you do have to pay devs to keep the app up to date with iOS updates and changes to transport info. But the greediness of the monthly sub is disgusting. I wouldn’t trust it to offer the full range of features unless I paid a small fortune. Today for example with some train lines out due to engineering it shows really limited options even though there are still trains running and if you get the timing right the trains would still be a viable option. Instead the new dumbed down free version can’t be bothered to show this info even though years ago this was fixed in the app and worked. I guess the devs have had to partially destroy the app so that we are encouraged to pay subs every month. What greediness from the owners. About time someone makes a rival app.

Adore the app but it could be even better!

I've been using Citymapper for years and I absolutely adore it. But in recent months I have become temporarily disabled, and it's given me a new perspective on getting around and using the app. So I have a few suggestions for improvements:
As is, the Walk Less option isn't actually about walking less -- it's about staying dry (ie, walking less *outdoors*), which is a good option to have but is NOT the same thing as genuinely walking less. I'd suggest that the current Walk Less option be renamed Stay Dry, and that a true Walk Less option be introduced that actually minimizes walking as much as possible. That could mean, say, offering an option to take three buses rather than two plus some walking. And it definitely should mean suggesting bus stops that are closest to where you're starting -- even if that means that getting to that bus stop takes you slightly in the wrong direction -- and closest to where you're heading, even if that bus stop is slightly beyond your destination.
(Step Free is also an excellent and much-needed option, but for someone like me who is not using a wheelchair but is walking, slowly and painfully on a crutch, being directed the long way around, say, a train station to an elevator is not helpful.)
I hope you'll consider these improvements to the app. Thank you!

Used to be good, now it’s unreliable

This used to be my go-to app for moving around London, but it’s gone downhill in the last year or so, to the point that I no longer trust it, especially for bus journeys. The app just sends me to a bus stop that doesn’t exist, or it does exist but the bus I need to take doesn’t stop there, or the bus does stop there but is disrupted - a disruption CityMapper apparently knows nothing about. The last time I tried, a week ago, it kept me waiting for 20 minutes showing a bus that was supposed to pass every 5 mins, it said the bus was about to arrive but it never did. Then I thought of checking Google Maps and there it was, bus route was disrupted because of an event.
When CityMapper decided to introduce charges I decided to wait before jumping into that wagon, just in case the service degraded over time. Glad I did. Maybe the paying route would have been better, but Google Maps is free.

LET US CUSTOMISE!!

When I alter the ‘Arrive’ time.
In the suggested area: I hate that the ‘Leave’ time is on the right hand side. In the Western world, we read, left to right, so it makes sense to have the most important things on the left, and the lesser important things on the right.
When i’m in a rush, the most important things I need to see immediately are:
Travel time
Mode of transport
Leave time.
The time the train arrives is the last thing on my mind when in a rush because the ‘Leave’ time, takes priority (why wouldn’t it?). I’ve been late a few times when instead of checking the ‘Leave’ time, i’ve checked the Train arrival time (Left hand side), thinking it was the ‘Leave at’ time that i’m sure was originally on the left hand side on this app a few months/years ago.
It’s infuriating! Overall great app, but if you’re getting mixed responses from users about which side the:
a) Mode of transport
b) Leave time
c) Travel time
d) Mode of transport departure time
should be..then why not create a feature that allows us users to customise how we’d best like to view the layout? Again - I have had silly lates recently when I didn’t have to, and that’s because the layout has slightly changed. That slight change, has made a BIG difference 🙏

Best app I’ve used!

I was recommended this app for a recent trip to NYC. I could not have got round without it. You can put locations in and it will give you the time it’ll take with trains, walking and any delays. I am not very techy and yet I found it easy to use and extremely helpful. It will tell you which subway station to walk to, how long the walk is from your exact current location and which stop to get off at and where to walk to once you’re off the train. It will tell you which platform to stand on and what will be on the front of the train you need. I genuinely would have been lost without it. Brilliant app!!

No longer what it was unless you pay.

Citymapper used to be a great app for travelling around most places in the world however since the new update most features are now paid.
Having to pay for more features is actually acceptable as the app is very useful however they’ve changed the app in a way that makes it rubbish unless you have paid. For example, if you want to leave at 0800am it might show you a route that takes 1hr20mims but if you then change the time to 08:05 it will show you a route that is only 40 minutes long. Why would you want to leave earlier for a longer journey? It also no longer shows you how long trains are running for when you select down the list. You used to be able to see trains running up until the last one of the day but now you can only see trains running for around an hour after you set your leaving time.
I still use the app but I am considering not using it anymore as there have been a few times (since the update) where it has actually made my travel slip more difficult.

More information on platforms would be great!

I’ve been using the all in London for several years and it’s great! It suggests which train car to go to for more optimal trips and it’s great! Unfortunately it didn’t provide that info in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It can be very confusing in some cities because there are different train services and their gates are often side by side and it’s not very easy to navigate (not always large boards showing all platforms are available at stations..). When you’re in a rush and have to figure it out, it can be quite frustrating.. so that little bit would improve the app massively, albeit it would be a bit tricky to get live updates at last minute when platforms are potentially changed from the usual.
That’s the only discrepancy I’ve noticed this far. Otherwise a great app to use! Hopefully will get a live-update-version for Athens too. (Haven’t tried it there yet!)

Useless since introduction of the paywall

I have been using Citymapper for years and the free version of the app is no longer functional. It provides incorrect information on live train times and claims buses and suggests routes which don’t work such as changes that aren’t achievable with any delay in the first form of transport without making this clear.
It also no longer gives an option I can find of opting for a longer walk - if you live further from the tube it therefore will give you options with a lot of changes / a longer journey when you could just do the walk - this isn’t an advertised feature of the premium app. I now find the way of actual arriving somewhere without arriving at a station or change point and having to wait quarter of an hour is to choose and arrival time and work backwards in short what Google maps does and Google maps is better at alerting road closures that prevent pedestrians getting through

Love the app but recent decisions by developers have spoilt it.

I first downloaded the app many years ago. The app is phenomenal and is miles ahead of any other app in the market to the extent that it has no rivals. The user interface is easy to use and is great for those for whom technology is not their strong suit.
Historically I would have granted the developers of Citymapper 5 stars. Unfortunately, recent decision-making has resulted in me having to take them down to just three stars. The developers of Citymapper have for some inexplicable reason, decided to go down the unnecessary and shallow route of the subscription model; I get it because it is an app that is by far the best of any city-based travel app, however.
The trouble, however, is that it smacks of greed and does not make logical sense for them whatsoever. It is a fantastic app however, this is not the way to go about it. I hope the developers will read this review attentively and take what I am saying on board.
I propose that the decision to become an app using the subscription model is reversed and move to a paid app. What this would mean for the prospective customer is they would pay £4 for the app, which would give them access to all the features; this model will have a better impact on the loyal customer base and any future purchaser; this is by far the better and more satisfying option.

It used to be great…

I think I’m done with this app tbh. I went to Berlin a few weeks ago and my mates told me this app is not good in Berlin (I’m from London). I thought it was weird but actually they were right, I found it to be really unreliable and it would not display correct timings and occasionally send me the really long way around, like asking me to walk around a park instead of throughout. This park has recognised footpath as when you walk through it it changes the path… Anyway, I got back thinking it was a quirk of being in Berlin as it had rarely messed my journey in London. But since then I’ve noticed it quite a few times send me the long way around ir not display trains which I’ve missed because Citymapper said they’d already left, with me leisurely strolling to a station to realise I just missed my train or my bus that I could have caught had I known it was mere minutes away.
I really lost a lot of respect for Citymapper after the rubbish they’ve pulled with the subscription model. But I get it, they want to make money and this is clearly a viable method for any business. Otherwise not every company, and their mothers would be adopting this horrid business plan, but that’s the world we live in. However it being glitchy/unreliable as well as limiting my travel options is really crap. It’s sad because it’s my favourite of the apps to use, I think google maps has slightly unappealing UI but guess I’ll have to get use to it because I’m done with this.

Extremely disappointing

This used to be my go-to transport app. I’ve now switched to another service. With many free services like google maps, Moovit, apple maps. It’s quite shocking that during the cost of living crisis citymapper now does not function unless you pay £3 monthly or £20 a year.
The *only* free function, “classic” only shows the option of cabs where it shows the average cost or how to go home by car. If we had a car would we be using the app…? So why show us that? What used to be on citymapper classic now has a new name titled ‘mixed’ and is only accessible if you pay a monthly fee. I don’t think anyone should have to pay £36 a year or £20 for navigation but citymapper thinks otherwise. Especially when it’s main demographic are young students trying to get around. They have turned into a money focused company and I find that to be really disappointing. You will only lose all your young customers.

Bring back bus and train tabs

As a long time fan of Citymapper, I was disappointed to see that you have removed the bus only and train only tabs from the free version. These were incredibly useful to provide detailed options when travelling. I understand that it’s been done to increase conversion to paid version but it removes what made Citymapper so fantastic. Without the option to see multiple bus and train routes in dedicated tabs, I may as well use Google Maps which also provides one or two bus routes.
Whilst anecdotal evidence, this pain even came up organically at a party yesterday! I know it’s been done to increase conversion but please consider rolling back this feature, else Citymapper loses what made it so great.
I don’t usually leave app reviews but I’m a product manager and I’ve learned it’s one of the only ways things might change.

Without any Miss usages they debited my account and when I noticed and inform them they refunded my money back saying that is technical fault. They are not responsible and they even doesn’t realize their fault they just said that was technical mistake and refunded back without good apologies and compensation.. very Worst Experience, Very Worst.
Again after this every week they charged me extra 3£,2£,1£ each week and for claming my money back i need to send at least 20’s email and only they returned. This made my routine frustrating and when i asked for claim they said you didnot tap in or out sonit is overcharged and for them to prrove wrong i need to download all the contactless payment and journey history everytime and send them again and again and even my bank statements.
I suggest genuinely not to use this app as they are taking you money as extra charge .. and uf u dint check you will loose your money as they wont refund automatically.

Hiding basic old features behind paywall

I think the decision to hide existing old features such as bus only option behind a paywall was of extremely poor taste and also a desperate to move for a quick cash grab. I understand that you want to make money but hiding a basic feature that’s been in the core app for ages and expecting people to subscribe to be able to use its just downright disrespectful to your costumers. I used to be subscribe but as I became a cyclist who mostly uses busses when needed, this feature was a must for me as some routes sometimes won’t be shown on your classic options so by going to bus only is the only way I would get certain route or if I needed to play around with routes from a different location, it would’ve been one thing I’d you ask people to buy a “pro” or “full” version of your app a one-off payment and be done with it, but I for one will not be subscribing for the simple reason that I will not be strong armed into paying for a feature that was always there and you suddenly decide to take it away and put it behind a paywall, I would have subscribed for better/new features not for something that was such a core part of the app and now you want to make a quick buck and force people to subscribe, as much as I will miss the feature this was not the way to try and get me to subscribe if anything you’ve pushed me more away from the idea. Just absolute greediness. If you want to make money stop buying overpriced coffee.

Good BUT

I must say I’m very unhappy with the “ bus only routes” changing. If you already gave us this feature for free, stepping back is not professional. Only shows the needing for money. I always preferred this app over the tons of others but at the moment I’m going back again to maps and others.
Then if you want to do this feature at payment, at least give something useful on the main page. If I ask the app for a route, on the main page I only find impossible ways with 2 trains, a rented horse, ships and 2 miles with brooms.
I clearly will need a “bus only” route, which I KNOW EXIsts and it’s the best way. But won’t show if I don’t pay.
This is disappointing me and I’m pretty sure tons of other users too.

Extremely poor decision to paywall ‘Bus Only’ journeys.

This app use to be good, but has been declining for years and has finally tapped out at the bottom.
I don’t bemoan a company from adding premium features behind a paywall. But any idiot in the marketing department should realise that paywall features should be for something premium or luxury, not for something completely basic.
With the recent update, being able to view a ‘bus only’ journey is now considered so special that a users has to pay for it. However, this pays little no consideration to who it is that will need to use the ‘bus only’ journey.
I live in London, my neighbour is a cleaner and will take a nearly 1hr45minute journey across 3 buses to get to her job in central London instead of taking the tube that is about an hour faster.
She does this because she simply can’t afford the £5 more a day that the tube would cost, even though doing so would save her 2 hours a day.
The people who rely on a Bus Only journey aren’t searching that option because they are looking for a luxury feature, they are doing it because they literally don’t have enough money to make a different choice.
CityMapper forcing this feature behind a paywall, trying to get poor people to pay for the privilege of taking the longest, slowest, most inconvenient journey possible is disgusting.
There are plenty of other options out there, and I hope more people delete this unethical app.

Amazing

Brilliant app! Have been using it for a few years now and it never fails me. Extremely helpful, and I don’t know what I’d do without it. I don’t even bother checking my routes online before leaving anymore as I just use this app once I’ve left the house.
Has a ‘get me home’ setting which is so wonderful as, once you’ve set a location as your ‘home’, will tell you the quickest route home from wherever you may be! (Great for me as I get lost so often).
Notifies you when your bus is due, and when you should get off the next stop, so you don’t doze off or get distracted on an unknown route.
Always tells you the quickest possible routes to get where you need to go.
Notices when you’ve left your usual areas and asks you if you wish to change your map to the area you are in.
Always 100% accurate and has never failed me, even when I’ve been stressed and confused and not known where I am.
Tells you every single possible route you can take, and you can plan routes to and from anywhere in the country.
Totally free!
There’s plenty more I could say, but basically, it is a brilliant app! And I wish I could give it more kudos, for how much it’s helped me.

Customer care cares about ratings over customers

UPDATE: For a second time, CityMapper have replied only to my negative review, offering to help if I email them. I emailed them accordingly, several weeks ago, and yet again they have failed to follow through, not even acknowledging the email I have sent. So I stand by my original assessment, and dock them an extra star: customer care only “cares” about their ratings, not about resolving customer issues. Let’s see if they reply to this review again - though I have all but lost hope that they will follow up over email with any actual support…
I contacted customer care about in-app data on my London bus route being consistently inaccurate vs data in the TFL Go app (had me waiting for multiple cancelled buses, which TFL Go knew were cancelled but CityMapper didn’t, etc). A month passed with no response, so I posted my question as a negative review instead. CityMapper responded to the negative review, asking me to use the “Report Issue” button in-app next time I was on the route and encountered a similar problem. So I did, and received an automated message that I’d get a response… that was a month ago, no response. So, here I am posting the issue as a negative review again, in the knowledge that, sadly, that’s what it takes to get the response CityMapper customer care commits to - but otherwise doesn’t deliver. Awaiting your answer…

Great but not always great

A very handy too for navigating the city with fast results, but it doesn’t always give you all the options - I have several routes I could take from my home stop to work but it seems to only give me one ‘first train’ choice and then various connections combinations after that rather than multiple initial train options. I have to manually change destinations to find (often quicker) routes.
It also doesn’t have a “via” option, which would somewhat alleviate this problem.
To make it worse it includes cancelled trains in the list, which is fine if it also shows other options but often doesn’t, just the same cancelled train multiple times, on one route only! (I have a screen shot if CM want to contact me!)

All around great

I downloaded this app almost 5 years ago now, back when I first started uni and moved to London. I only got it because I’d heard it was a bit better than Google maps and wasn’t expecting much. Now I can say that this app is life changing, at least as much as a maps app can be. Outside of times I’m in a different country entirely, I can’t think of many, if any, instances at all where more than a week has gone by without me using this, even for something as simple as double checking the time it’ll take to get somewhere. The routes and times are always super accurate, even down to walking speed, and now it’s expanded to more than just London. Couldn’t recommend more - blows all the competition out of the water.

Misleading information!!!!

I’m a young woman who does babysitting as a side job and often return home quite late on my own. This app used to be reliable but I don’t know what has happened recently that I can’t trust any of the information it gives me anymore. Incorrect bus times, buses that don’t exist, making me wait on my own for a bus they say will arrive and never does. Tonight, leaving a job, it gave me a route across a park with no illumination and at the end of it the bus stop it told me to wait at had no sign of the bus I needed. The app kept telling me the bus would arrive but nowhere on the bus stop signs or led panels it said that bus would even pass there. I waited and to no surprise the bus never came. I had to walk a long way to get another bus and then had to walk more to get home as that wasn’t the bus I needed. Honestly. If you’re a woman on your own at night don’t trust this app. This is not the first time this app has mislead me into a bus stop that is not working or is not the one I need or into thinking a bus is coming at 2 am and the bus never comes.

Fantastic app

One of my most used apps. Great in my home city and also when travelling to other major cities.
One suggestion would be to have a feature that showed you the optimum time to travel to a destination within say a one hour window. There may be a train that is less frequent but that is more direct thank making multiple changes. So the priority would be on speed of journey and simplicity of trip. Sometimes I would be happy to plan my journey around something like this rather than setting off immediately and seeing what the current route is.

I have used this app for years for public transport and walking routes in London and abroad, and recommend it to everyone. I recently started cycling in London and had been using google maps voice instructions for longer journeys. I found the routes were too busy and on main roads, whereas the citymapper routes were quieter and more suitable for cyclists, so I decided to pay for club to get step by step voice instructions. This was the first app I’ve ever paid for, and I was extremely disappointed. The voice instructions were delayed, so that it would tell me to turn into a road after I’d cycled past it. I cycle at a slow to average speed, but I’d have to have been cycling at a snails pace to hear the instructions in time. It kept telling me to do U turns because of the delayed instruction, and a journey that should have taken an hour took two. I had to stop using it half way through because it was doing to opposite of what it was meant to - getting me lost rather than showing me the way. Some may think this is an overreaction, however I am such a fan of all elements of the free version that I trusted that the paid version would be even better. But unfortunately my trust has been broken and I will be removing my subscription and will only consider redownloading it if this element is improved tenfold.

Essential for London

Im a university student studying in London. Without this app public transport would be infinitely more effort. It breaks down each step of your journey giving you times for trains, information on delays and cancelations and tracks as you walk for directions between stations. I admit that at first glance it can look complicated but take a minute while ur waiting for a train or bus to try different features and after a few journeys u will get to grips with it. After reading other reviews I would stay away from the in-app ticket thing as people are saying it is more expensive and less flexible than oysters but I dont use that feature anyway. I also appreciate the small detail when it gives the calories it will say what percent of a meal it is (eg. 0.6 english breakfasts or 0.8 burgers)
To conclude, download this app.
P.s. I wrote this essay of a review while I was supposed to be writing an actual essay

Some additional features please!

This is often a very helpful app, updating arrival times when traffic increases/train delayed etc. I would love to be able to choose “go via” particular locations because some journeys are possible but don’t show up and I prefer quieter routes which don’t go via central London. Another addition I’d like is all the bus options when I leave a station to continue my journey. Eg right now I’m on a different bus than that suggested which goes from the stop 10 steps away and will get me to my destination sooner ( by 15 mins!). Finally, I sometimes start my journey by bike and leave it at the station. Is it possible to incorporate this option? Currently I have to estimate my cycle time and plan on the app from the station. Many thanks!

Loving the new STEP FREE update!!

I have this app on various devices for more than a few years now and I always recommend it to other people. It’s actually one of my favourite apps how sad is that? LOL. I am so happy that they now have step-free routes I have been waiting for something like this for so long for my cousin who is disabled I have now told her to download the app and she is so happy.
The TFL wheelchair access / step-free guides/maps were so confusing to the point my cousin had to be lifted up a flight of steps from a platform late at night when we got confused whether it was a station that had lifts or not for her wheelchair. It was the last train so we couldn’t turn around so lucky the nice men helped her while i carried her wheelchair up.
Anyways now thanks to this app and its wonderful nee update i am confident this wont happen again.
A BIG THANK YOU to the city mapper developers and all who contributed to making this!!

Still pretty good but one annoying change...

It was much better when trains/buses/etc that were more than 20+ minutes in the future showed the exact time they were due instead of how many minutes away they were.
This morning, it wasn’t helpful to know that the train I needed was 86 minutes away. Knowing it was due at 8:17am would have been much more helpful, as it would have avoided me having to go to another app to figure out the train time. Please at least give us the option to choose “show minutes until the train” or “show exact train times” and give us the option to set the cutoff point between the two - eg I’d like the app to show me “minutes until the next train” up until 20 minutes away, and then all trains more than 20 minutes away show the actual time of the train.

Marketing is good until...

Smart ride is one of the most exiting and innovative thing i’ve seen for transport sectors. Although as much as i appreciate the effort, please do not give up on the most fundamental thing of the app which is to provide the quickest and optimal transport options. Some of the recommendations nowadays makes no sense. There were clearly quicker way around and less changes needed when i search for my destination. Even after browsing all the given options, i still dont see the route option that i know that would be quicker. It makes no sense. Please improve and not to make me pause on the selection screen and later just quit the app

THE best way of finding one’s way around a city I’ve ever used!

I love Citymapper, I really do. Never before have I found such a great way (if you’ll excuse the pun) of finding my way around a city. It considers and calculates every single means of transport there is for you, between where you are and your destination, and then presents a range of options for you to pursue, combining different modes of transport and displaying total journey cost expectations, in a very clearly and fun, even, presented instruction for the chosen route. It’s always been spot on, e.g. when compared against other similar services, very straightforward and simple to interpret, so definitely gets my vote as the clear winner of its type!

One of the best apps on my phone

Whether it’s the prompts telling me it’s my stop next on an unfamiliar S-Bahn Line, reliable ‘local’ walking routes that shave 5 minutes off travel times with shortcuts, telling me the best Tube carriage to get on in London, public transport timetables or Uber integration, CityMapper has made travel so much easier.
I use it all the time in London, used it for a 1st time visit to Copenhagen (when I had no other map), 2nd visit to Berlin (where the public transit was invaluable) and Paris when I needed to find some rather more obscure locations.
Unlike other mapping apps, it doesn’t seem to drain the battery as it tracks progress. Maps are clear and directions also usually. You can save directions for use offline. Public transport integration is excellent. For example, in Berlin other apps listed incorrect info (telling me there was no direct airport route to where I was staying, when the S9 in fact does the job).
My only two quibbles; it doesn’t cover enough cities and on on occasion it directed me across a park that’s currently a building site. Minor points against a really outstanding app.
Oh. And it’s entirely free. Chuck the paper maps in the recycling and download this instead. It’s all you need.

Turn by turn walking directions please?

I use CityMapper on and off and recently acquired an Apple Watch so thought it'd be a good time to try out the CityMapper integration there. I could select my destination on the phone, it'd sync to the app and it was very nice, UI layout and everything. Until it came to the walking part. I look at my watch and it just said "Walk". OK, but my destination is at least 25 minutes away, why no turn by turn directions.
And then I remembered this last time I tried using CityMapper. It seems such a shame since it puts so much emphasis on walking, but it doesn't even tell you how to get there.
It's nearly perfect for my uses, I like to walk as much as I can, but the lack of turn by turn makes me go back to the competition. And no one wants that.
