Could be better
It’s a good app, but it could a great app. It runs a little slow no matter what you use it on iPad etc. More listen back features would be great with longer times to listen back to, not just the past week as on Lyric FM. However still high quality entertainment from RTE!

Unusable on the move
Generally the app works well until you’re on the move. The buffering is practically nil so sound cuts out frequently making it unusable. On a train and the consistency was atrocious.

I use it to listen to Irish radio in England when I’m feeling homesick, or want to listen to good quality music shows and DJ’s.

Cannot pause or rewind a live program. Long time lapse after live program until it is available to listen back.

Love this facility and the Timer which allows sleep if listening late in the evening. I am out all day and travel overseas each month, but, having this allows me to keep up to date with all news and programmes as little or as much as I wish

Please just make it work exactly like the BBC Sounds app? Landscape view please as well as portrait, ability to pause and rewind while a programme is playing live? Playback of a programme to be available ASAP after live one has finished. App before was much more user friendly ☹️

I listen here in England to the Great mix of music and entertainment presenters bring a laughter sadly missing in this sometimes sad world we live in keep it up RTE2 love it 🫶

RTE app review
The updated app has been very difficult to use. The old one was much better. It also had better breakdown of programs making it easier to find a topic within a show.
The delay in getting shows up onto the player is too long.
It’s like a half hearted attempt to do the job properly.

App is slow. Programmes not uploaded or accessible for hours . Too many adverts before programs begin. Compared to BBC Sounds your offering is a joke.

Thanks a million
Listening to RTE remotely online since 2023, thanks for investing in us committed listeners. RTE radio has been a constant companion in my life for as long as I can recall, giving such a breadth of music, discussion & global political debate, remain sincerely grateful the tech exists to keep me tuned in.

Live radio
I tune in and miss the beginning or part of discussions of my favourite radio shows. Would RTE be able to implement the functionality of rewinding and pausing etc LIVE radio like some other radio apps.

Good start but a lot of room to improve
RTÉ have built an app that works but there are a lot of room for improvement:
- I now subscribe to Sunday Miscellany via Apple Podcasts as the playback function on the RTÉ app is wanting. How about variable speed playback?
- The user experience is wanting, my 83 year old Dad who has mastered an iPad struggles to access playback. Does RTÉ think about accessibility
- Streams are laggy indicating work needs to be done on a CDN
- what about rds style messaging on livestreams?
On the plus side it isn’t as bad as the RTÉ TV player.

The app often doesn’t react to button presses . It seems quite random and almost always starts with an ad which is quite frustrating

Why have you made it worse?
Why has RTÉ made its app worse?!
On Listen Back, the programme’s progress bar has disappeared, so one can no longer skip forward or back to a specific point in a programme, by tapping on the progress bar. Why?
The whole of Help & Support has disappeared. Why? For example, this is how one accessed a music programme’s playlist, to find details of songs played.
One should never make an app poorer….

Not User Friendly
I miss my old Doc on One app, the new podcast section on the RTE Radio app is virtually unplayable. If I have to pause it or go back, it cuts off & touch & go whether it goes back to the spot where I left off. If not I t’s impossible to fast forward next to where I was. I’ve had to give up on it unfortunately for more play friendly app. I really miss the great documentaries let down by an awful player.

I am an avid rte radio listener. Like others the immediate ads are frustrating, the position on the iPad screen now awkward, and the reception a bit hit and miss. However I find the listen back great, the variety of programs very varied so generally the other aspects are not to be critical. But constructive.

I personally found the old app more user friendly, deep down I am missing the convenience of tuning into RTÉ LW on my radio transistor one of which which I had in what ever room I walked into during my day round the house, I would switch it on and tuning in was instant. I now walk round the house with my mobile phone in my apron pocket constantly losing contact. I always chose to listen to RTÉ indoors on my radio and only sometimes outdoors on my phone when on our allotment. It remains my favourite station to listen to.

The new app is significant improvement on the early editions. But disappointed I still can’t download shows to listen offline as I’m often in areas of poor WiFi/5g coverage. Also limited functionality on CarPlay- only certain shows available (although good to seeit there) perhaps this will improve in time

I only listen to RTE1 and don’t plan to change but I find the ad for RTÉ Sport excruciating to listen to, especially as the App drops frequently and the ad comes on every time I press the Play button

Needs a Live Listen Back Option
I like the RTE app and use it all the time to listen to my favourite shows, as I now live in England. I really wish it had a live listen back function, so that you could go back to the beginning of a programme during it’s broadcast, like BBC Sounds. I think it would be transformational and really appreciated by RTE radio listeners.

The Ads
The ad mean I have to allow 5 mins of silence before I turn up the volume, ie for news at 9 O’clock switch on silently at 8.55 until the junk listening ceases. Is this advertising slot the reason our Long Wave station was closed. Not a Happy ex-patriate bunny.

Very poor functionality and hard to navigate
Previous app worked much better, this is difficult to navigate and when then find what you want and press on it a lot of the time the app doesn’t react to the selection. Hard to believe what should be an improvement is actually much much worse. Probably the worst entertainment related App I have used. Please sort it out. Even bring back the old app as a stop gap.

Disappointing
I dislike using this updated app. It’s cumbersome and slow. Everything is heaped into one long play!
Unlike the old app an instant replay of a programme is unavailable.
Every play begins with ads. The sleep timer is hard to find. To locate it, you must go through the menu, locate the sleep timer options etc also no end of programme sleep timer available.
I enjoy rte but this app is horrible to use!

No longer working
This app was working well but in the last few days it will only play ads and then stops when you try to switch to the Home Screen or use another app and then when you go back to it the ad continues or it cycles to a new ad, but there’s no radio programme at all. Please fix the bug.

Love the player but recently every time I open the app I get an ad which is fine but I also get ads every time I press pause which is really annoying to be honest and means you also miss part of the show you pressed play on. We get the same ads as radio/fm listeners during the breaks etc why do we need extra ads because we use the app

Not very accessible for the blind
A lot of this app is not properly labelled or navigable using VoiceOver, that’s making it very hard for a blind user to access the app. Which is a shame.

Great content, clunky crashy app!
Love RTE’s content, especially documentaries, but as an app this isn’t good. Hard to navigate / find what you’re looking for, bad UX, crashes, doesn’t remember where you were in a program etc. All minor things other radio apps get easily right.

Playback facility much worse than before. I live in UK and rarely listen live. Previously the programmes were available much more quickly. Now it's often late into the evening before a morning show becomes available.
As others have said, it's also cumbersome trying to find particular content on playback. Unlike before. Sort it out RTE!

I use this on iPhone and it’s great. Clear, loads of choice, well curated and I never fail to find something surprising. So top marks for feeding curiosity. Playback on RTE1 is a must listen.

Unreliable
New app seems to freeze a lot on apple iPhone especially when on the move. Old version seemed much more stable and used to reconnect if you lost connection for a short time - on the new app it just seems to freeze.

A reliable and strong service
Sound quality is excellent, much better than my FM radio, and it is dependable. FM Reception is not uniformly strong in all areas of Ireland. Great to have a reliably strong service.

Where’s the zero star rating?
Since the update a few weeks back it won’t open on my iPad. I’ve deleted it and reinstalled multiple times and still nothing. Before this update I used the app everyday without fail. Please sort this out
