Interesting content however no access to old magazines like the new scientist subscription model

It would be better if they included the specials in the subscription fee - was clear as mud when paying for it thinking all was included.

Saying that the actual content was entertaining and enjoyed learning new and interesting facts.

The format of the magazine makes it hard to read the font is tiny meaning you need to zoom in and out on each page. Maybe a scrolling format of the articles on each page would be better with embedded images instead of the full page on the screen. Otherwise an enjoyable read with great facts!

Good, fun magazine but poor resolution

Enjoyable magazine full of interesting articles, but the low resolution together with small text size means fuzzy text at any sensible reading size. I have perfect vision and a retina display and there is still an issue. Please improve, the Top Gear magazine is a good example of high res text that doesn't have this problem.

I can click on any mag to download, subscription or special mag, it doesn't matter- each time I click to buy it says 'oops purchase failed' !

So frustrating and it's not because of Internet connection or money in my account, something's up with the app :(

Second Subscription!

I've been a long term subscriber to How It Works mag and when I heard it was on here I rushed to get it!

However I realised I had to get a 2nd DIGITAL subscription! Why!?!??

The love the mag but I wouldn't recommend subbing to it. Shame :(

Lots of facts

Before I started reading this I knew 11 facts. I now know all the facts. And they still keep coming. Facts are everywhere!

It's sometimes difficult to move around the page though, because instead of scrolling it'll bring up the navigation screen. This can be annoying. And that's a fact! Ha ha ha! See, I'm even making my own facts up now.

Since this update it now hangs and crashes. Never had any problems with this app before so it's a shame. I hope it's fixed soon so I can receive the content I have subscribed to!

Hi I subscribe to your actual magazine and now have an iPad 3, can I keep my subscription going to receive it on the iPad as well or do I cancel my subscription for magazine and re subscribe for iPad version or can I get both.

Good content but...

This magazine has very good content but unfortunately due to the crammed layout, the zoomed in fonts do not have retina display for the iPad 3.This makes it difficult to read on the iPad as the shortcoming of the little low res fonts and pics is magnified by the retina display.Please increase the font and pic resolutions and then mag is surely 5 stars

Superb! Digital edition for less...

I love this subscription. I've never bought any magazines on a regular basis until NewsStand came along.

Cheaper and more flexible, putting you in control!!!

I love the quality of this magazine! Clear and shows up really well on my iPhone 4S screen.

5 Stars for quality but would give 4 stars in total for the way the magazine handles navigation. Other magazine subscriptions have better navigation features, and Library Views, i.e.: Library showing just the purchased magazines instead of ALL the magazines on offer.

The other thing is double tapping on paragraphs does not line them up zoomed to the screen width. You have to pinch in and out slightly to fill your screen with the width of the Paragraph. This could do with sorting please!

Patch needed

Please sort out this app. I can no longer get it to start up. It neve gets past the opening screen before it crashes. I am looking for money back from subscription as I can't read anything. SORT IT OUT, please!!!

Update broke it

Before the latest update I could access the app. Sometimes a bit slow but was fine. I like the app and I have bought all issues for the last 4 months. However since the last update I can't access the app at all. I have restarted the phone and ever reinstalled the app but still no luck. Fix it soon or I will be cancelling my subscription.

Not great

Update: There have been no noticeable improvements with the latest app. Navigation, zooming in, and reading are all still a rotten experience on the iPhone.

I bought this via the new Newsstand app on the iPhone. I knew the actual magazine was an in-app purchase - that was obvious and I can't believe people thought they would get a regular magazine for free.

With regards to the way the magazine is presented, I am quite disappointed. It's just a series of images of the individual pages. Therefore zooming in on an article doesn't focus in on the text like zooming does in Safari. You have to pinch and move the article to get it into place. General navigation throughout the magazine is also rather poor because of this. I probably won't buy any other magazines from Newsstand if they all work this way. I guess it may look better on the iPad.

With regards to the actual content of the magazine, it appears the target market is A-level science students: good introductory explanations that could entice you to explore further. I'm hoping to see New Scientist in the store soon - but I'll only buy if the articles are presented in a way that's suitable for viewing on an iPhone.

We need to try it out

The problem with many magazine offerings on iOS (and all the other platforms), is that the interface can be tediously slow and the layout, dull and unimaginative. We really require these days to have a sample version to move through and test.

I think I would enjoy a good number of these issues but…

a. I have no idea what is included in each magazine

b. I feel reluctant to pay for a random issue, only to be disappointed by the same old scanned PDF offering all over again (it may be brilliant, but how do I know?).

So, please provide a sample few pages to view and include an index to the subjects covered in the various issues. Thanks.

Oh… and by the way, sure you can orient to landscape mode for a static preview (although it wasn't clearly mentioned), but that is no indication of the interactivity within the magazine itself. Also, the contents page is far too tiny to be legible.

I think this typifies the problem with the thinking surrounding mobile development. These are not magazines, they are something different. Delivering the same content, albeit digital, in the same format is not the answer. Magazines are tactile. It's about the glossy pages and scanning from one page to the next. It's not possible to do that on a tablet without panning, swiping and zooming. It's a lot of work for not much reward. You have all this extra power at your disposal, so use it. Make the page dance.

I'm sorry...

You have to be a special kind of idiot to think that a magazine which is not free is going to be, all of a sudden, free in digital format.

If you are reviewing with 1-star and this is your first ever rate/review, I can understand the confusion.

For those that have been buying apps for more than one week, do me a favour. I wish people reviewing on newstand would stop messing around with stupid reviews. It blights this part of the appstore as it does others.

Future enhancements needed

It it disappointing trying to decide which past issues to read, when all you have to decide is a miniaturised copy of the cover. When you click on it, no highlights of what you can read inside pop up. An enhancement would be if they had screen shots to go with each issue, like what you find when you are think of purchasing any other game or app.

I feel that the only app that works really well on an ipad is the Reader's Digest app and that's because of the size of the magazine.

What we need is an ipad with a bigger screen!

I subscribe to the mag and thought it would be good to have an i version too. Unfortunately a further fee is required. I suppose i will have to stick to the old format and delete this "free" news stand item.

A note for the creators: subscription holders should have this i version included in the fee… arrange this please.

It Works

I can understand why people only give this App one star and rate it as a fraud, con etc, for the reason it says it's free which it is not. My opinion is purely that it is marketed wrong and the price should be as it is £2.49 each volume, not free. If you think that you are being mugged just pop down to your local newsagent and buy it at 3 times the price . I wouldn't buy it at this price although it is a very good read at £2.49 on my iPad. Just do as I have done and download one volume and see the value for money that you are getting.

Normally I don't rate anything 1 star as I usually don't like people that do it but don't justify it. But this does deserve it, the whole point of being able to pick up a magazine in a store before you buy is to get a preview. This needs some free sample pages at the very least.

Guys, stop giving one star reviews because the app is free, but the issues cost money. Thats obviously how Apple has set it up because THEY ARE ALL LIKE THAT!

Don't blame the publisher for something that's out of their hands, and don't bother rating magazines if you haven't even read a copy - that's not what the reviews are for.

I've just discovered that if you download the app, then view the unpurchased issues in landscape mode, you can tap the cover and it goes into a preview mode that shows you the whole issue. Try before you buy!

It's good, the content is excellent but the delivery method is poor.

The app is somewhat jerky and moving swiftly between articles is slightly tricking when it lags. It needs work to bring it close to a seamless experience.

Great mag. Aweful app.

If you want to know what this app is like? Pick up a previous 'how it works' mag. Take pictures of each page. Then read the pictures. That is literally what you get. There has literally been no attempt to optimise this for an I device. No double tap to focus on text, you have to do that manually. Then the mag takes an age to re focus when you zoom, so much so that you think it has not responded, so you reinput, then it does all the commands at once. Aweful aweful aweful! Please at least pretend that you care about the product you put out then I might consider returning.

Only the content is good

Very very unfortunate for the iPhone, Pixelmag, News stand feature and all of the people who like reading interesting mags.

Really amazing content, really interesting.

But an absolute phenomenal let down on image quality and zooming capabilitys!!!

With the technology in our hands. The very least these guys can do is deliver some fully high definition renders of these mags. From the moment you open the app and look at the mag for the first time you can see it is blurry and low quality. This is before you zoom in enough just to read the text!!

The double tap zoom feature is non functional and not intelligent, usually it will fit the text/image to the screen for optimal viewing. In this case it needs to be manually adjusted to fit screen. IMO

This is due to each page of the mag being photographed for the app. HUGE mistake... Image quality is crap!

Content is amazing tho but without the rest being up to scratch, it's not worth a penny!!

I do not understand how they can sell this in this condition for that price. I am very dissatisfied with my purchase.
