Absolutely useless!!!

I only downloaded this so l could use private listening. It’ll connect when you first download it but won’t stay connected. I uninstalled it, and lo and behold, it connected again…..only to disconnect again. This appears to be running theme amongst the other reviews. A pretty fundamental flaw that isn’t being addressed by Roku.🤷‍♀️😏

This Roku App is a very efficent app for using your television if your remote is broken or if you would just prefer a quicker resource. I would definitely recommend trying this out!

Supremely frustrating

When it works, it’s wonderful, but trying to get the audio to stream over Bluetooth only works half the time. The app claims that it is connected, but all that happens is the TV mutes. Have rebooted phone, but no change.

Poor updated app

Latest update will no work as a remote, says Roku sticks not connected to network. Reset both Roku connections but next day not connected again. Worked perfectly before, handy when remote batteries went flat at night.

Great app broken

With the latest 2 upgrades if you should go off screen and do anything else, the app freezes. For instance, my security camera gave me a notification and when I come back to the app it does not Respond. Forcing a quit and relaunch of the app, then it works again. Rinse and repeat. Therefore making this app redundant. It does however have other excellent features features such as the search function and typing or speech recognition. Mirroring. But, its failure in its basic functionality makes it a deal breaker. It use to be a good solution. I have a projector and so in a darkened room the included remote with Roku is not adequate. This app no longer works, without frustration, so I will go back to 15yr old, back lit Phillips Pronto remote. Sometimes new technology can be more of a hindrance than a benefit.

UPDATE: 10.0.2. Has fixed the above app freeze. I’m well happy the issue has been resolved.

Remote woes

When it works, it’s great but the remote uses a set of batteries every couple of months. The stream bar then doesn’t communicate with the remote and I have to reset it, losing all my log in details for each channel. It might be in the bin soon. It’s a shame because the sound is good.

This is a lifesaver. My Nowtv remote was damaged and I thought I’d need to locate a new one. Apparently, Nowtv don’t produce the tv stick anymore so this app from Roku enabled me to carry on watching tv seamlessly.

Keeps disconnecting

I have to uninstall this and use one of the non official versions which actually stay connected, basically unusable at times just keeps disconnecting, and when rewinding or fast forwarding once it disconnects it just continues to fast forward or rewind because I can’t press ok to stop it, the unofficial Roku remotes work perfectly, I can deal with there ads over this any day, tried all the trouble shooting methods, nothing works, tried this on multiple high end tvs so clearly not the TVs problems

Pair new remote.

Very annoying you can’t change a remote to a different Roku without it being on same network! Trying to get a box working but can’t find remote! The app won’t find Roku 1 box & we brought from a different home & hence network. Really frustrating and annoying you can’t pair until it’s set up WHICH I CANT DO.

Temperamental Remote

When it works it is great, but the remote constantly locks up. The volume controls work, as does the on/off control, so the batteries are fine, but to move across apps and channels just doesn’t work. Then the next day, with no changes, it suddenly starts working again. Would you accept a car, or a kettle, that was this temperamental?

Free, easy and VERY useful!

No need to sign in to your Roku account unless you want to save favourites etc. Finds your devices and works immediately.

The private listening option is amazing. Just tap the headphone icon on the remote tab and it mutes the TV and starts playing on your phone. I mostly listen from my phone's speaker, but plugging in or wirelessly linking headphones also works brilliantly. This feature makes it so easy to watch TV when everyone else is asleep. Tap the icon again to unmute the TV and stop listening on your phone.

Tap on channel/app thumbnails to go straight to them. Very convenient.

It's a great remote app. Does everything you need.

My only request for future updates would be the option to listen on your phone AND the TV at the same time. It would help people who can't hear very well and also those living with family who constantly talk loudly over everything!

App terrible on iPad

I have no issues with the stick or app running on iPhone, on iPad though it is the worst experience ever. If you are multitasking and put the Roku app on split view or slide over, it becomes useless, literally you can not access the remote buttons. UI is terrible, not optimised for the iPad’s larger screen, instead is just the iPhone’s zoomed in like 400%. There is also a bug where private listening won’t work with apple tv+, you have to force quit the apple tv app on Roku (the stick) and open again for it to finally work. Hopes this gets fixed so can give it more stars.

Very handy app

Very handy little app, does everything the remote does and more. Allows you to mute the telly and listen through your phone’s earphones instead which is great for late night listening without disturbing others. If they could just add shortcuts to allow you to go straight to series or tv programmes you were watching recently, that would be even better, but all in all a great app as it is. Also if the search function allowed to search for a film or tv show across all the platforms, that would be even better!

Very Useful App

This app brings so much functionality to our Roku stick. It makes it easier to type passwords and you can listen to your tv with your headphones (that’s by far the most useful feature for me, personally). This app also comes in handy when you can’t find your remote or your batteries have just gone flat. I’ve used this app for years and haven’t hit an issue yet.

Good but has faults

This remote has been so good, between kids losing original it has helped me to keep them entertained by having it on my phone. HOWEVER, over the last couple of months there has been connection issues. I’m directly in the same room connected to the same network and the remote crashes and will not work. Even when phones and device is restarted the issue still doesn’t solve.

Roku problems

My Roku is excellent when it works, which is quite rare to have no glitches. It seems to forget everything from day today, I have to go through the resetting of everything and even then there can be problems. The plug in part gets very hot behind the TV which makes me anxious I tried using the app on my phone for controlling it but I couldn’t get that to work either. Sadly it’s not as good as expected.

Works but inconsistently

It’s a great little app when it works with a channel menu so you can easily navigate to your favorite apps. Downfall here is that it will not always connect to the tv and when it does sometimes disconnects fairly quickly. The only way to get round this is by disabling Wi-Fi closing the app the reconnect to Wi-Fi before relaunching the app. This is a fairly consistent method to get around the connection issue.

Constant crashing - Private listening

The Roku app seems to go through really good periods and then really bad periods!

For the last few months the app has been unable to find any of my Roku devices, the only thing that changed on my network was the Roku app was updated!

Now finally after two / three months and the latest update it can find the Rokus but every time I click on the private listening feature the app instantly crashes! So frustrating as I use the feature all the time due to both my wife and I working shifts!

Mehh.. when it wants to work it’s great

So the app decides when it wants to work. I’ve had it a while and have 2 devices a Roku tv and a tv stick. It connects to them both sometimes. And then maybe one and not the other when both in use. Nothing changes they are always on the same network. It’s frustrating!

Changing it to one star.! Tried everything still temperamental one min works and then for months it won’t connect. I have the Fire TV remote too and not one issue.!

This app stopped working when I upgraded to IOS16. It can’t see the two Rokus on my network anymore. I have another iPhone that is not upgraded to IOS16 that still works fine. Support ticket raised. Nearly a month now with no response.

Convenient until you lose your remote

After the buttons on my physical remote started becoming less reactive, the app remote worked as a better alternative. So much better that you forget you’ll need your physical remote to connect to new wifi servers 🙃

Very easy to use

I really like the Roku app. We have a NOW TV box and the controller either runs out of batteries or falls down the back of a sofa.

My phone seldom suffers from either of these issues so I find the app really handy.

It is also great for using the phone keyboard for searches as the usual cursor nonsense on the apps is very tedious.

Good app with broken feature

I used to use this app a lot, but one feature broke in recent months which makes it useless for me. The headphone connection keeps dropping. It used to work flawlessly, so I’m not sure what’s changed. My headphones stay connected to my phone as normal, but the direct link with the app drops out after a minute or so and I lose the audio connection to what I’m watching.

EDIT: 2 app updates since I wrote this review but private listening is still broken.

Private listening stopped working about 5 months ago

Roku app was pretty awesome at pairing with my now tv stick and using the Bluetooth so I could listen through private listening. Great for somebody like myself that stays up late - tv doesn’t bother anyone.

Past few months it’s stopped working - will suddenly disconnect after about 30 seconds. Won’t work with any apple device at present. Pretty pointless app now - was using it a lot but that was mainly the reason. Other than that it’s basically a remote but I have one already and there are plenty of other decent free remotes out there on the App Store.

Yes - tried trouble shooting and tried all the advice I could find but doesn’t make a difference. Happened after an update on apple devices and also the Roku app was updated too.

Pretty redundant app now.

Good but problematic

Works as an alternative to using the provided remote, which plays havoc with various remote controlled lights, however I need to switch off the 5ghz channel on my router to use the private listening function, and even then it doesn’t work properly as the audio drops for between 2 and fifteen seconds every ten seconds or so. Ultimately a flawed app which doesn’t really work in a standard setup

Since the last update, private listening repeatedly drops out every few minutes.

Roku recommends restarting the box to reset, but this is only occasionally effective.

No problem with private listening until the last update. Sad because private listening is a very useful feature to have.

Make usable when on Mobile data

Love this app so much but please make it so you can use your mobile data to access the app because I hotspot my tv and like using privet listening but i can’t because it won’t let me on the app when using mobile data.

Jan 20th 2022 - okay so you have now made it that you can access the app but can’t connect to the device on mobile data? I can connect manually but when I hit the little remote icon it says I have to have a wifi connection. Really getting on my nerves now.

Currently not working

This app can no longer find my Roku device, when both my phone and Roku are connected to the same network. Have also put in my Roku’s IP address and get a message saying “Roku cannot be found at this address” even when the device is online with the IP in front of me from the Roku settings menu. Tried deleting and reinstalling the app, tried restarting both the device and the app and still nothing. Something has gone seriously wrong recently. Please fix!

Good remote + Great headphone feature

Great app works as a remote when I can’t find where the kids have left the other one, but it really comes into its own in allowing me to watch the TV and send the audio to my phone which allows me to use my headphones from my phone, great for not disturbing the family late at night. Plus it’s free, can’t say fairer than that.

Okay

I’ve had this remote since I got the tv, the actual remote is rubbish battery only last about two-three weeks so I decided to download this one. Was working perfectly without a hitch. And since I have two now tv sticks in the house it always picked up both fine. Than last week it just suddenly stopped working every time I go on to the app it would freeze and crash. And now it doesn’t even bother opening in up.

Great remote app but missing on functionality.

The remote feature is great and works seamlessly. However, I wish there was a feature to turn the TV off from the app. Of course it’s possible to do it with the remote feature, but that’s only possible if you can see the screen. It would be great if there was a button just to turn tv off so that you can just press on it from wherever in the house.

Great apart from the one feature I wanted

Been suffering from audio issues when using headphones with the remote and one suggestion was to use the app instead. However, while the app looks like it would be great if I lost the remote, I can’t get the headphones working with it at all. The help/FAQ says to open the app and plug headphones in, but that has no effect. I’m on iOS and have the latest version of the app (it certainly says it supports headphones) but no dice. So kinda annoying. And remote batteries are fine, have restarted roku, and no I’m not fiddling about with wifi channels.

Worst app ever

This app has stopped working suddenly it tells me Roku is not connected when it is connected and has excellent connection also says no roku device can be found when I type the IP address it tells me there is no device on this network when there is and tells me I need to enable permissions which have already been enabled and even when I turn the permissions on and back off it still won’t detect device even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app still not working this app is beyond belief you would think after years of this problem Roku would have sorted it by now but no it’s a case of we have your money so stuff you we won’t bother fixing issues with our own app which means you can’t use your phone to control the device like we promise or use private listening never mind the fact this constitutes false advertising Roku have known about this issue for years now and still not sorted it customer service and care non existent with this company.

Temporary

When I first got my Roku I used the app a lot to download new channels and pause the tv when my kids were watching and ignoring me. I really liked it. Today I’ve gone to use it to search for a channel after not using the app for a while and suddenly my device is no longer listed. When I search for the device it tells me it isn’t connected to the same network (it is), I’ve tried doing the manual option and it tells me the same thing. I’ve also done all the troubleshooting options to no avail. So now the app is redundant for me.

Doesn’t work for My Roku Express on my iPhone XR

This app wont work for my new Roku Express on my iPhone XR which is up to date on iOS and working off the same Wi-fi network. I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps but no joy. My iOS Air picks it up straight away - very annoying.

Awesome App

This app is amazing and I love it. It makes controlling the TV a whole lot easier. If you have a ROKU box than I recommend you use this app.

I love how it’s free and if you loose the remote you can just use your phone. I honestly think this app is better than the normal remote as the buttons are easier, it’s easier to search and I love the voice part of the app.

Constant buffering, terrible picture

It worked for three months, now it keeps telling me that I’m not connected to the Internet, accompanied by constant buffering and terrible picture when it does work. All other devices in the home are connected to the Internet and working perfectly. I have fibre to premises, so I have a really fast and solid Internet connection with no dropout. It’s not my internet connection, it’s the Roku. I’ve tried all the things I can find advised online to fix it and none of them work.

Great but...

I’ve been really impressed with the Roku stick. It does a lot of stuff I’d expect from a smart tv (my TV is older and it’s smart capability is useless due to constant buffering).

The main limitation I’ve found is that as far as I can see there’s no decent app that gives you access to Freeview channels on a single menu - at least not for free.

Also more recently the internet connection keeps dropping out when watching tv. Whether this is the stick or the internet provider I’m unsure but it’s only noticeable on the Roku - not while using the web.

My opinion on the roku app

The Roku app has helped me out massively, for example when I leave my remote control in another room I can use the app which is on my phone which I have on me at all times. It is also a big help when I what to know what’s on and I have to go it trough tv but with the app I open it and I’ve got all the information I need right in the home section, downloading the app literally change my life, also saved me from hours of searching for the remote when I lost it, very good app and I recommend it to every one who has a Roku stick for their tv. 😊😊😊

Love Apple TV Love Roku

Being an Apple fan I love all things Apple however Roku has snuck into my collection. Needed a solution for a portable small projector and didn’t want to connect my Apple TV, so looked at other options and then came the Roku. The best thing about the aroku is it’s great for travel, hotel room no problem, stick in in the HDMI Port, connect to WIFI and bobs your uncle all my subscriptions all in one place, all logged in.

Would recommend having both the Apple and the Roku, but actually I use Roku 8 times out of the 10.

Simply amazing.

Works excellently as a remote, with access to all the platforms Netflix, Bloomberg several other TV stations etc.

I love the fact that you can use speech to select a channel stream or TV station.

You can also cast the content from your phone to your TV.

It’s amazing.

Replaced lost remote with app

So the normal remote has vanished. We have searched high and low and I was getting in a right state. Suddenly my 9yr old said “Mum just get the app and use your phone”. I then had to get him to show me and it is fantastic. I have also loaded it onto my laptop and my iPad so that I can use which ever one is nearest when I need it.

Jumping back to home screen

I’ve four Roku sticks that have all worked fine until now but they are jumping back to the home screen all simultaneously in one day roku are blaming my internet which it isn’t I’ve restarted and reconnected and low and behold still the same thing customer service is a waste of time as they don’t listen to the fact it was caused by an update if I have to renew all four I won’t be buying roku sticks or anything roku again!

Voice search now works; Roku support still not great

Back in February I said in a review that voice search was not working on my iPhone. The good news is that is now working, possibly after a recent update.

The bad news is that I had completely given up on Roku Support. After very unhelpful service from them,I had not heard from them at all for very nearly two whole months. It was when they popped up once more after that long silence that I checked the app again and found that it was now working.

Faulty

I have had my Roku for about two years and since moving rooms the stick has decided not to work all together. I may have to repurchase which is something I don’t want to have to do. It tells me I’m connected but fails to actually put what I’m asking from Netflix on the screen. It just says casting and then never does

Mostly smooth, but very clunky password system

This can be an absolute life saver. I’m always losing remotes and the roku remote is no different but I always have my phone on me and this works most of the time.

The one problem I have is changing the password using the keyboard. It either stops after a certain amount of characters. Or it doesn’t accept the iPhone password system and I’m never going to remember the strong password that it gives me. This is super clunky and needs resolving on the next update.

Fantastic companion for Now TV

This app is fantastic for controlling my Now TV box as the underlying hardware is a Roku 3 .. surprised at the additional features that the app provides which makes this a doddle to use and much more faster and pleasant experience to use then the physical remote. Things like the personal listening and onscreen remote are a fantastic solution! Nice one Roku!

I’m not trying to use it for anything fancy but as a remote etc it’s works better than my actual remote does. Think it’s great to have this as an option. I lost my remote one day so thought I’d add this, I didn’t think it would work but it did. My phone connected with my Roku box straight away. Really pleased

Crude software mostly designed for paid tv streaming.

I was promised it would be easy to view my pictures from pad and phone via the Roku device. It is anything but!! Finally getting the pictures to just show on the smart tv with roku device connected, if I hit any other option like adding music I cannot find a way to get back. Pages keep freezing and the software options are very limited. The home page has every option for paid tv channels but no “Play on tv “ option. What with that, being forced to give my personal data and credit card details in advance and the difficulty to simply do what I wanted and thought I was buying.., this kit is a pain to use. What a big let down!! This app is incomplete there must be a better way.
