Latest update is crashing on my pad before I can read anything!

“Support for larger screens” - larger screens can do one. App is unusable since a couple weeks ago. Shows splash screen then crashes. Have rebooted iPad as well as reinstalling app. Nothing works.

The App has suddenly stopped working on my iPad, it just shows the splash screen and then crashes. Not good enough as I am paying for content that I only read via the app and there is no support mechanism if you can’t load the app.

I constantly have trouble trying to read the magazines. It keeps telling me I have no subscription. I have to log out then re-login. Sometimes it won’t let me read some issues then another day it allows me. The telephone help line are beyond useless. GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK

I have just discovered after wondering why the October edition of the magazine wasn’t available the the latest Top Gear App update isnt compatible with my iPad OS and I have the latest software update on it.

Non existent support

New Version not Great

So the app asked for a new review so here it is.

Downloading an issue doesn’t work properly, and it still won’t remember your place in the magazine.

If you want a higher mark than one star developers, how about fixing fairly glaring errors that were never prevalent until you decided it needed a new look.

Poor Quality App

App is confusing and not at all user friendly. The subscription policy is unreliable and I know that I will not re-subscribe, although it has cut me off from my subscription two months early thus preventing me from viewing the last paid for editions.

The content of the magazine itself is ok, although the writing is at times so pretentious to be unreal.

Latest software is frustrating

The old downloadable magazine was a solid performer and took minimal space on a modern smartphone. The latest is slow, reliant on connectivity even in download form with frequent request timeouts interrupting.

The “specials” content is great but the reading format seems to be incompatible with a smartphone and is forever scaling and hard to read.

Shame as general content is very good.

Sometimes less is just less.

There has been a gradual decline in the functionality of this app and the new update has sunk even lower. At one time it was possible to resize the pages on the screen, click on links, images and additional content. Now, sadly, the resizing is no more and links virtually none existent. I’m sure the photographers put a lot of thought into taking the shots that fill the magazine, only to find that many are too small to really appreciate when they appear in the magazine’s app.

Save for doing a bit for the environment by saving on paper and transportation costs there’s now little to gain from going digital.

Well that’s the end of that then

I have been a subscriber of Top Gear Magazine for many years, but, the latest version of the app has caused me to cancel my subscription.

The previous version worked excellently, on my iPad, in landscape mode, when sat on my desk. The latest version doesn’t even support that.

The navigation is poor and I find I am spending more of my time fighting my way around. It’s a shame that, although the content is as always fantastic, the new delivery mechanism should fail in such a catastrophic way.

If you ever bring back the old version, let me know and I will resume my subscription.

Latest update is awful

I’ve been happily enjoying this for years, but the latest update is hateful.

It won’t bookmark pages.

You can’t zoom in at all, even to enlarge the text, never mind the photos.

I haven’t seen any interactive content yet.

Basically it’s now a pdf version but without the zoom option.

I probably won’t renew my subscription because great content is hidden behind a substandard app/interface.

If you’ve subscribed via iTunes app then you’re screwed as it won’t let you read your past issues unless you subscribe directly and pay again

Have reinstalled app. Still doesn’t work. Have reported this twice through the apps own bug reporting function and no reply in 2 weeks. My subs finish at end of this month and won’t be renewing.

I’ve been a digital subscriber, via iTunes, for many years. However, with the recent ‘upgrade’ I cannot access any of the magazines, even after hitting ‘Restore purchases’, which always used to work.

Dodgy pricing. Contact links don’t work either

Unfortunately when trying to ‘subscribe and save’ at the advertised price £23:49 for 12 months with auto renewal, the actual price becomes £34:99 without explanation. £2:99 per month similarly becomes £3:99. The provided links for support all derive from apps.immediate.co.uk which doesn’t seem to work on my iPhone either. If you go long hand and type or search immediate, on the website selecting top gear magazine actually becomes a cycling magazine instead.

So I don’t think I’ll be subscribing to the dodgy price or link! What other help is available?

Why do you force the app into landscape mode on iPad

This seems to be the only magazine app that forces landscape mode on when using. I don't want to hold my iPad like a TV, I want to hold it like a magazine (ie portrait). Very annoying.

Woeful loading time.

Not sure if it is the fact that I inadvisedly updated my iPad 2 to iOS 8 (bad move) but whereas this app used to load quickly and was a joy to use, it now refuses to load in the time span I need between haircuts. Shame as the magazine itself is truly fantastic.

Useless help function

I upgraded my iPad, and had to log back in to the app. No account recognised (all my user names / passwords are backed up separately, I know my details are correct), no ability to send a password reset, no support email address. No TG magazines. They've now informed me (4 months later) they're about to renew my subscription for another year. Terrible support. Deleted.

I think this Magazine is fantastic for those Car loving fans like me. Top Gear is an amazing TV show that has been going on for years now, and so i thought i needed more than just the TV program. The one problem i have found with this magazine is that you have to pay to buy the magazines and £2.99 for each one comes to a lot of money in the end

I mean if you are buying every single magazine every month for a whole year means your spending over £36!

Well what can I say against this app? Nothing.

What can I say about this app? Plenty, the price of the real paper mag is a hell of a lot more than this very expertly presented app. The content is the same in both mags, although I'd rather have this app for the convenience of what you want to see plus the amount of videos that you can't get in a paper magazine.

What more can I say?, nothing, so which mag do I prefer?, well I think it's obvious.

Just don't buy it

I regularly buy Top Gear, Car and Autocar and thought I'd tidy the house up a bit by getting this app. Seriously - don't bother.

Upon getting the app and eventually figuring out the subscription approach, I was set and... no magazine. I assumed I'd get the latest edition to start the subscription but no. So I bought a one off edition for that month to find that days and days later - the same edition appeared as part of my subscription.

However, this month's issue is stuck there as a Click to Preview. It's out on the news stands and it's offering to sell me the edition but my subscribed edition has not arrived. Beyond frustrating. Yes I'm logged in. Yes I've looked at the outdated FAQs (summary - turn it off and turn it on again). Doesn't seem like the developers understand the Newsstand app is like the undead - you can't kill it without a stake through the heart of the screen.

Only Harvard Business Review comes close to this annoying level of incompetence.

Steer clear... look at the other reviews....Terrible app - I want my money back on my useless subscription.

Totally unreadable app. Magazine OK

I took up top gears offer of some 99p issues and thank god I only bought 2. This app is all over the place. I can't read a single page without it jumping about. There is no zoom facility (just a mag glass with a line through it???) so you have to sort of gently swipe about to read the different columns. And it doesn't go where you want it to go either. At one point, I ended up back in the library section when I was trying to read a bit at the bottom of the page. This 1 star is for this hopeless app. The magazine is fine.

Good things come to those who wait

When I first got my iPad in 2010, I was anticipating TG would bring out an interactive version. Two years passed and, whilst there were loads of amazingly cool implementations of other magazines to the iPad, TG was nowhere to be seen. There was the miscalculated AR version of the print magazine and then the PDF version on iPad. None of them had the interactivity or immersive potential seen on other mags.

Then this came along. Suddenly I could read TG again and have some awesome videos, audio and other features. Personally, can't wait to get a retina iPad to make it even more awesome.

Have had this app since January and love it! The special effects and features applied to this app just make it worth every penny and especially love the little extra vid's on it.

It just keeps getting better having recently had an overhaul, credit to the Top Gear app team! Loving the latest PCOTY, which looked like the ultimate in boys and their toys road trip!

Ambitious, but rubbish

Since the 'upgrade' a few months ago this app has become effectively unusable. It's all very well having tons of interactive features but when the download size has ballooned to 600MB per issue, when the download fails more often than not and when the app crashes half the time on any given page, it's an utter waste of time and a massive turn for the worse.

I want a magazine I can download and read quickly and reliably. A mostly non-functional 'interactive experience' which majors in being an experience in frustration isn't what I want.

Amazing!

The app has been updated and now the option for existing subscribers is available and I can use my print subscription to access access the digital copies again.

The contents of the new interactive editions is brilliant! Loads more pictures and videos all integrated. January's edition is just as good as December's.

PLEASE NOTE: because its now interactive, it's released 5-7 days AFTER the magazine is released! This isn't a problem for me but I had to email their support team to find out.

Wahey it's arrived

Subscribed last month after last months brilliant issue but still no sign of the new issue and no news on when it will be available, Would be 5 stars if it had come out when it said or if there was something notifying of a delay

Edit:Sent an email to their support email and received an email back from their support team saying the magazine is out 5-7 days after the day stated in the magazine, Have bumped the star rating upto 3 but will go to 5 as long as it does come out in the next few days

Edit:Glad I've subscribed to the ipad version even if I have to wait abit longer for it to arrive, wish the app developers mentioned this in the description then it saves any confusion for future subscribers and current

Now working!

Second update which apparently sorts the problem for current print subscribers being able to download issues but it doesn't. I filled in the form to create an app account with my print account number which tells me I can now login except when I try to I get authentication files and I still can't do anything. Waiting for a reply from support so hope they can sort this ASAP. UPDATE: After emailing support I got a new password which allowed me to login and download my previous purchases. I love the new interactive editions. The HD videos are superb and the photography as amazing as ever. Very happy.

Brilliant answer to the printed version

Really like this new interactive interface, it's intuitive and adds a little fun to the reading. I especially like the main menu which, if you tap an article it takes you straight to it. I have no problems reading mine in landscape with the retina display, clear and sharp. Plus it's a fair bit cheaper per issue than the printed version and I don't have to go out of the house to get it! Winner!

Poor text rendering on iPad 1

If you have an iPad 1, this app is not user friendly. The app only works in landscape mode, and whilst the pictures are crisp, the text is unreadable. You can "Pinch to zoom" to get a closer look at the text, but the app takes ages to sharpen the word into a decent focus. If you want to see how a great magazine app works, look at the Stuff gadget app...that is how to do it!

It's great to see an interactive version of the magazine. I've been a reader of Top Gear for many years, the added video's and interactive content really adds to the experience! Appalling

Subscribed in may- an update meant I couldn't download issues for three months, customer support were USELESS and also couldn't refund me. Latest date has solved that but now I can't zoom by pinching, on some issues it also doesn't rotate to portrait view, so have to read it in landscape with two pages spread across the screen. Not to fear I've invested in a magnifying glass to read future issues. Seriously, this app needs much better support and someone who knows what they're doing. don't subscribe to this, get the paper issue.

This is SO much better than the previous flat PDF page-turner. The picture galleries look absolutely brilliant. Love the extra videos as well. Definitely recommend this new 'interactive' version for anyone who loves cars and Top Gear. Wish I could afford the McLaren that James May was driving!

Why? (don't update!)

I used to love the old version of the app, I have a mag subscription, but liked being able to take it with me with the iPad when I was out, the new version of the app breaks that though. There is no way I'm subscribing to the app and the mag separately which seems to be the way you have to do it now!

Why has the option gone? And more importantly why are you not warned that this will happen before updating the app?

I'm hoping I've missed the option somewhere, but doesn't see, to be the case.

This app was great until I downloaded the latest update, I subscribe to the printed magazine but with that subscription on the last version of this app I could log in and download all editions without having to pay for them again.

But now that option has gone you can not log in with your printed subscription so you would have to pay again to have them on your ipad which I'm not prepared to do.. This is very disappointing that they have changed it. If I have missed something I will change my review but for now it's one star DO NOT UPDATE if you already use this app, you also loose all editions you have already downloaded in the previous version..

Useless and lazy App planning

A waste of time, memory and some very lazy presentation by the Top Gear publishers. This is not an app but the ability to download a complete PDF of a magazine - using a vast 350+Mb per issue. Took ages to actually download with 3 unsuccessful attempts. Trying to read it is next to impossible - 1 got as far as page 3 and then gave up, after trying to zoom in on and up and down static columns of text. Shame as I am travelling abroad and it would have been nice but my advice is do not bother and buy a paper copy. Come on Top Gear - surely you can deliver a half decent app that downloads quickly, can actually be read, and is worth paying for?

Lots of bugs with this app.

Unfortunately the download time for this app is extreme. I could get in the car drive to the newsagent and pick up some milk as well as the magazine in the time it takes to download. I've not had this problem with other iPad magazines or papers.

I cannot view the covers of the issues unless I buy them (and even then it's hit and miss). So I am not sure what I'm getting until I've bought it. Reminds me of those covers they stuck on naughty magazines... I didn't think Top Gear is x rated!

When downloading you can start reading the magazine and if you close the app to do anything else the download pauses! So you can't download in the background.

I've got an iPad 2 and a new iPad and I have only so far downloaded on the iPad 2, so I'm not sure of these are iPad specific problems.

Great magazine in theory, and it's often out of stock at the newsagent so if you don't mind being patient for 10 minutes and dealing with a few amateur programming issues for your £2.99 then go for it. Otherwise just get in the car and buy the paper one.

Extremely underwhelmed

I've been waiting for this for ages, having regularly been reading Focus magazine purely on the app for a year now. So imagine my disappointment to see that instead of using the same brilliant format as Focus, this 'crApp' is just a PDF, unreadable on most pages without continuous zooming and panning. Surely this lesson was learned 16 years ago with the web - if we enjoyed viewing content in this way, browsers and HTML would never have been needed.

Very poor 'app'. Somebody needs shooting at TG for not doing it properly like Focus magazine did.

Awesome applitude

This is great, I am lucky enough to own one of the new iPad generation and it looks amazing. It's great because when a new issue comes out you need not wait for it in the post but download it straight away. The only downside is that they do not send out a hard copy to accompany each digital issue this has to be set up manually.

At long last!

As a long time subscriber to the magazine, it's a delight to see this come to the iPad. As someone who owns the 'new iPad', I can honestly say that the graphics are amazing. Very easy to read and interactive.

I'm sure there are many more improvements to come, but it's a very good start.

Also glad to see that I don't have to pay extra to get this, as an existing magazine subscriber it's free.
