No longer allows access to issues

I have been a subscriber (magazine and digital) for several years and have always used the app without a problem. Now I cannot access issues after December 2025 without paying- despite having an ongoing subscription. I have restored purchases using my subscriber number but without success. I phoned the helpline but they had no answer. Unsure about renewing my subscription if this is not resolved.

Great mag, app not ideal

The magazine is great but ideally I’d download to read on the underground, but unfortunately it often needs an internet connection to read EVEN when the particular magazine has been downloaded.

New versions never tested update

Every time there’s a new version, there’s problems having to log back in again. This happens constantly. It never accepts my subscription number for weeks and then decides it’s going to. I don’t know if these apps are ever tested before their release to the public, but it certainly doesn’t appear so. The following day another version was released. This works fine. Panic over.

Reading view

I decided to rejoin BBC History Magazine after a break. I am extremely disappointed to see that you’ve changed the reading format. Previously the digital ‘reading view’ was as the paper addition but now we have to scroll down each article.

Is it possible to have the ‘reading view’ as it used to be (the paper format) added into the app?

Great content but the ads

The history content is really great. However, after subscribing and using the app maybe three times, I was faced with an ad, which I could not just exit. Subscriptions shouldn’t come with ads. So, I unsubscribed.

Rubbish ap , shame as the content good

You used to be able to access this via iPhone like a normal ap, but now it is obsessed with making you login and subscribe via the website which never works on my phone (iPhone 12) . I subscribed through iPhone store but can’t access, what a waste of money. Which is a shame as the content is excellent really wanted to read it.

Dire! Unable to access content that I’ve subscribed to!

I’d give “0 stars if I could for this dire app. I have a subscription to this magazine yet am unable to access any content which I’ve paid for. Only option showing is £5.99 for each issue even though previously they were downloaded & readily available. No option available to sign in as “already a subscriber”. All my bookmarks have disappeared as well as all the paid for issues I’ve downloaded and on,y option available is to pay £5.99 for each!! Also get constantly bombarded with emails (to the address used for my subscription) it’s offers of discounted subscriptions to the magazine I’m already subscribed to. Avoid this app!!

Useless App useless customer service

I bought my digital subscription over two months ago but not once has the app worked!! I still haven’t been able to access anything!! I’ve emailed customer service multiple times and they keep saying “sorry we’ll get back to you soon” and disappear!! Complete waste of time and money

Looks good but downloading appalling

I signed up for trial. Despite liking the content I will not be renewing. It takes about four attempts to download whilst it sits hanging endlessly at the 60% mark and I have to start again. Takes about 10 minutes even when it works. Such crap tech. What a wasted opportunity to get new customers.

Pathetic support

The support for this app is woeful. I can’t download editions for offline reading - I’ve contacted them several times for help and support with no response at all. I’ve paid the subscription for this service and it is useless to me.

Update has improved everything

I have to say before the update to the app to optimise for iPhones I didn’t use the app for that exact reason. You’ve brought me back in because it’s so easy to use and it’s now a joy to use the app. Thanks dev team for the great update!

Magazines good, app not good

I love the way they lay out the magazines when I can actually access them, but I have to redownload issues every time I go onto the app, it hardly ever loads, and it doesn’t hold my place when I exit the app. It’s a shame because I really love the magazine.

BBC History Magazine

Great magazine but can’t read any issue as despite purchasing an annual subscription in February , I have not been able to download either April or May’s issue. 30 minutes plus to ‘download’ issue to 100% and then the message ‘Processing’ appears and stays indefinitely. Really disappointing. I want my money back or an app that works.

Updated - Still useless

Yet another updated review. The content is fab so I’m focusing on the app.

It’s wiped out about six months of my subscription so the app is asking me to lay again for some issues. I’ve been in touch but no reply.

The audio option never EVER works. The sound bar moves. The clock/time moves. But does sound come out? No.

I hate this app. I mean really HATE it. I’ve been subscribing on and off for years but I don’t think I can ever subscribe again via the app. I like to have the sound as I can listen to the articles as I walk the dog. I’d also like to have all my issues back.

One other massive problem is that the app developer sends the buyer to iTunes for support if you purchase the subscription through iTunes. iTunes send you to the app developer. On and on it goes. Frustrated and ranty is how I’m feeling right now.

Ugh! Just don’t bother downloading this.

Normally get the magazine sent to me by post but this time missed an edition. Renewed my subscription and was told I had electronic access to all editions including the current one. Cannot get access! Purchased the missing edition and after an hour only able download 18% of the magazine.

Content is great (so I’m told) but the app crashes every time I use it so it’s hard for me to tell. I’m using iPhone 6s+ and my iOS is up to date so I can only assume that there’s a Problem with the app itself. I’m paying for content that I can’t use. Won’t renew.

When are you going to fix the crashing bug you introduced in the last update?

When I tap on Read to read an issue I had previously downloaded the app just quits. The only way to fix this is a complete re-download of the app. You can download an edition not previously downloaded and read that, but then you have the same problem with THAT edition the next time. This only just started happening, and it is very annoying!

Great when it works...

The app is generally really good but it crashes too much. I often have to download titles repeatedly as they get deleted and some issues get stuck and don’t fully download. At the moment the app just closes when I try to open an issue. It’s really frustrating.

Wonderful magazine

New app is much more stable but I can’t seem to delete issues to free up memory after reading. Along press does nothing. A short press opens up the magazine again. Help!!!

Great content, app needs improvement

The magazine content itself is great, but the app lets it down in a big way and is often a frustrating experience to use.

I will most likely cancel my subscription for this reason alone.

Such a shame to see the many reviews saying similar things and still nothing changed.

Won’t work offline!

Very frustrating that despite downloading the issues onto the iPad, I still need to be online in order to open the app? I need to connect to WiFi open the app, and then once I’ve opened the issue ( which is already downloaded) I can then disconnect. Stupid system really!

Otherwise the content is great, but the ‘online’ issue does make this problematic. I don’t seem to have this problem with BBC Focus magazine though.

Can not access subscription

I have freshly verified my subscription online (re-registered using my subscriber number) and accessed ‘locked’ content on the history extra website ok, but the verification details don’t work on the app. No suggestions on the app for what to do about it either.
