About Professor Brian Cox:

Professor Brian Cox OBE is a particle physicist, a Royal Society research fellow, and a professor at the University of Manchester as well as researcher on one of the most ambitious experiments on Earth, the ATLAS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. He is best known to the public as a science broadcaster and presenter of the highly popular BBC2 series Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of the Universe and Star Gazing Live. He was also keyboard player in the UK pop band D:Ream in the 1990s.

Not supported by the developer by the look of it

The videos which are essential to this app do not work. I tried contacting the developer but got no response whatsoever! Don’t waste your money or time… unfortunately it looks bad on Prof Brian Cox… perhaps he could ask the developers why it’s not working!!!

As mentioned in previous comments this used to be an amazing app but the videos (most interesting function) stopped working. I would expect Apple to do something about this since ppl might buy and customers have paid for something that is not working as expected.

I seem to have the same problem as a few other other customers. Purchased this app a few years ago and loved it, found myself wanting to work through this again but no videos. Please can the videos be brought back or if not a refund as the app has some of its content removed.

Absolute Rubbish

I had hoped that a big company like HarperCollins would sort out the fact that previous purchasers have complained that the videos don't stream on this app or their other Brian Cox app. Without the videos the app is just a bunch of fancy graphics to swipe around. Don't buy this app until you see that it's been updated since Jan 25 2019. If you want to see how an app should look, go to Solar System by Touch Press. Better still, look at all of their apps.

This app promoses much and should be absolutely superb with Professor Brian Cox presenting the BBC videos. Unfortunately after waiting 5 minutes for the videos to stream and no video appearing, the app is virtually useless.

The app should be removed from the app store until the developers have rectified the problem, which seems to have been going on for several months now.

These comments apply to both the Wonders of Life and Wonders of the Universe apps. I have purchased both and tested them over several days, in the hope they would start working. They were tested on iOS 10 on an iPad 4 and iOS 12 on an iPad Pro 12.9.

If you try to report a problem to Apple from the link on your invoice, you just link to the massive Harper Collins website where there is nowhere to report a problem.

I would like to request a refund since the app does not function correctly and there is no way to rectify the problem.

My daughter really loved the app but we cannot view any videos. I have bought the app few years back and they were perfectly fine but my girl was too young to understand them properly. Hopefully you will be able to fix the issue. Thanks.

Disappointed

I bought this app when it first came out and it was amazing. Now a few years old I’ve re downloaded it for my 6 year old son as he has a big interest in space ( and has asked for a telescope for his birthday) so it should have bee perfect. But to my dismay NONE of the videos work. Please please sort this out. Where can I get the original app from. It had all the videos built into the app so you didn’t need to stream it from a server that doesn’t work anymore

Amazing Amazing App

I am 7 years old iPhone user and have purchased more than 2 thousands apps. Being a PhD student I have keen interest in Science and I can confidently say that this app is by far the best app I have downloaded so far. Such an amazing development skills and amazingly full of knowledge. Off course there is room for improvement and more topics to add but it's surprisingly good piece of work.

There is just one little suggestion for Prof. Brian Cox. The area of research where is trying to find facts from history and religions, he should add Quranic point of view as well. Being a PhD student I am amazed to study Quran in terms of Creation of Universe, it's process and different stages. It is aligned with current scientific studies even though it was revealed 1400 years ago. I would humbly suggest Prof. Cox (if he hasn't yet) to study Quran and he will be amazed to see amazing facts in it in terms of creation of universe, evolution of life and end of all times.

Over all congratulations to build such an amazing app.

It seems we are expected to pay twice for Wonders of Life although while the new app is available for £2.99 the old app we have already paid for has not been updated to include Wonders of Life in full.

Don't pretend that it shouldn't be included as it has had a section for month and even gas a teaser for Wonders of Life coming soon!!!

Very viewable , very informative. Just one error to point out in the article " realm of the sun". The diameter of the sun is 1,400,000 km and not the 40,000 km as listed in the app. A typo I'm sure. Otherwise a great app.

Amazing! I liked the clips and loved how it added the writing and the pics from the book and how you can travel through the universe! However when I upgraded it to wonders of life I needed to add my Facebook account and I don't have one. I was looking forward to the upgrade and I don't see the point of needing a Facebook account! Having not quite discovered my interest in much at school, about 8 years later i find myself interested in everything. This app allows me a great way to learn about the universe and everything in it, and i've really really been enjoying it.

I've always felt a dragging emptiness when thinking about the universe, but this app has allowed me to see it from another perspective and now i feel both emptiness and wonder... and wonder feels good.

Best app of it

This is what the 3rd gen ipad was made for, superb visuals and great layout. Brian cox makes understanding the Cosmos enjoyable and intresting.

I have to say to those that keep banging on about needing wifi you also complain about the size of the app and having to wait for ages for it to download, do you not realise that if all that video was included in the app it would of been more like a 4-5gb download rather than 343mb! Now that would take a while :)

Just got the latest update 1.20 and wow watching Betelgeuse go supernova is simply amazing, great update and hope theres many more to come.

Great content but frustrating navigation

This App certainly has some great content, images and video. Personally I found it horrible to navigate. Having spent some time with it I am still not sure if I have seen everything.

Seems more like an adventure game to me, trying to find all the video that is probably there but I missed it.

What happened to the old keep it simple method of navigating? Give me a menu where I just tap and off you go. Dragging things around the screen like this is too confusing.

Ok app, but with some glaring mistakes.

Overall I do actually like this app, however want to highlight some of its flaws.

The app has some glaring mistakes in several of the info graphics (such as mixing up hydrogen and helium atoms), this is quite inexcusable. Also much of the text is a replication of what is said in the videos. This app just takes large chunks out of the 'Wonders of...' books which accompanied the tv series' and are they are sometimes confusing when read out of context.

There is also a lot of repetition. Read about the 'Forces Behind The Sun' in the 'Sub Atomic' section and then read about the Sun in the 'Solar System' section, they are exactly the same, complete with the same info graphics.

The user interface takes some getting used to. Instead of utilising a navigation system that is common in so many apps, the makers of this app have tried something different and as a result it feels slightly counter intuitive. Try the Richard Dawkins 'Magic of Reality' app for an example of good navigation.

Within moments this app had me speechless with my mouth agog. Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long time. Oozes quality from the offset, it has such depth and flows so freely, you'll be unable to put it down. The best I've ever bought or seen and at that price, I feel like a thief. Nice adaptation of the greatest story ever told

Cox is as much fun to read as he is to watch, so if you enjoyed the series, you'll probably enjoy this app. It's perhaps best described as an interactive e-book with snippets of video from the series embedded into it. The graphics and sound are lush, and the interface is perfectly intuitive.

My only gripe concerns the video: it's streamed from the publisher's server rather than being part of the app, which isn't much use if you're on the move and nowhere near a wifi access point.

Packed with facts..

Good quality content but the editing could have been a lot better.. A fair amount of repetition, even within a particular chapter. Navigation ok for browsing, but difficult to use if one wants to return to a particular piece of information. There are some sloppy errors, like labeling a picture the solar system, when it was a galaxy. Nearly gave 2* but the content is superb.

This is what Apps are about!

Totally brilliant. Simple to use, informative, you can dip in and out, follow a whole theme through or just do a bit. Follows the TV series, the pictures and graphics are superb, this is totally WOW. The kids love it too, tip romps so many questions from them. It could do with a bit more film, but that sold have made it 6 star!!

Wow this is good

I very rarely review apps but this app is special!!

At first look I was quite disappointed as I have watched all the wonders TV programmes and all the video appears to be straight from the TV series, however after reading the text and moving round the 3D universe I am very impressed.

Do not let the video comment put you off as its great to be able to watch the sections of video in conjunction with the subject you are reading at the time..... It stops you getting overloaded with information all in one go like it is when watched on the TV.

This is probably the best app I have on my iPad. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Informative in a down to earth manner, Professor Brian Cox is truly amazing at getting his message across in an easy to understand way. There is so much information here, I know that exploring it will take some time and be most entertaining along the way.

This app really is brilliant, it is so worth the money that is asked for. It is actually one of the most expensive apps I've bought, but it's probably one of the best. Everything is smooth and lots of information is contained in this app. I cannot recommend it enough.

Amazing!

I've always been interested in astronomy from a young age, I never went to university or even a career in any field associated with it but I'm a huge fan of the prof and watched all his shows. This app is 100% what you'd expect from him, fantastic pictures, very easily explained and just wonderful to look at. Great job done and a snip at just £5. Highly recommend!

Does not work on iPad 1 by JJ

I know it states that it is compatible with iPad 2 etc; however, I foolishly assumed it would work with iPad 1.

If they are going to start making different apps for each version of the iPad it will be hard to think of a reason to recommend one to anyone.

Normally things are backward compatible and to find apps that don't work on an iPad1 so soon seems a bit riculous to me thats why I give this such a bad score.

For all of those who have an iPad 2; this could be you soon!!

Loads of info, but not very interactive.

There is a lot of info packed into this app, but it is quite traditional, text, photos and video. Where the photos are used to illustrate a topic, it feels a little lacking, I was expecting more given the gushing reviews. If you're expecting a jam-packed, interesting book with videos, you won't be disappointed, if you're expecting a step forward in iPad edutainment, you will be.

The fact that this app allows you too view the universe from a quark level at the centre of our sun to the Centaurus Great wall is very impressive in itself, but the fact that it also allows you to see celestial beings from the lagoon nebula to the entire andromeda galaxy , coupled with all the extra background information, photos and video clips make this app the most amazing application on the market , absolutely worth the money !!!

This app is an amazing exploration of the inconceivably spectacular universe we live in. From subatomic particles to the universe as a whole, Brian Cox presents the material in a straight forward and knowledgable way. I wish I had resources like this at my fingertips when I was growing up.

Perfect

I've just spent an hour totally absorbed in this application and here's why, it's just amazing! I loved the series and this contains all the magic that Brian brings to the world of the universe and physics.

It's also very easy to pick up and use. The user interface is spot on and the production quality is to be applauded. I actually feel like I'm zooming around the cosmos with Brian at the helm. Of course is goes without saying this would be an amazing tool for anyone studying topics covered by this app.

Very interesting but repetitive.

Well truth be told this is a very well put together app which takes full use of the iPad and it's strengths the videos are very informative the animation is truly fantastic and the brake down of the graphs and chemical compounds in to easy to understand formats is some thing that others who are looking to replicate this app should take in mind.

This said there is one flaw that really bugs me and that is the repetitive nature of the information an example of this is that we are treated to a short video with the prof talking to us explaining about the " Big Bang " and how the first simple structures came into being.

Then we are then given text to read which repeats what the prof has just told us then further down the slide again it is repeated.

This happens a lot.

Don't get me wrong this is a superbly informative app with a lot of eye candy which you and both I will not regret purchasing but I really do wish that the size of the app and it is a large app was not taken up by the amount of repetitive comments.

Hence my rating of 4* which is not fair as this should really have a rating of 5* and would have if not for the repetitive information.

Just too repetitive see how annoying it is when some one or some thing is just repetitive too much if there was less repetition it would certainly get the coveted 5* that it deserves.

Beautiful

I am a massive fan of the Wonders series and Brian Cox himself. When I found out about this application I bought it straight away and I have not been disappointed.

This is the most beautiful app I have ever seen, I have the new iPad 3 with retina, even without the optimised graphics it's outstanding although I do wish it was retina optimised..

The information itself is fantastic, understandable and easy to use, both occupied with pictures and videos.

I love the way things scroll around, going through space to get to the information. Very clever application!

I won't be putting my iPad down for a long time now! Great work!

Great, awesome, all those words

Fantastic combination of video and words that will appeal to children of all ages, though especially the ones just before teenage years. But if you want to understand neutron stars or the Pauli exclusion principle in ways that you'll be able in turn to explain to other people, here is where to start.

Inspiring; educational; and the interaction mode is great. Buy it.

No sound here either (at first)

Seems to look lovely, but I can't get sound either. Tried the mute switch tip but doesn't fix it for me unfortunately. Quite annoying for what is one of the more expensive apps.

Happy to revise this rating if the sound issue gets fixed.

Update: OK re-downloaded a second time, sound now working.

Just curious

OK, so I have an iPad 1 and I bought this app. It was late, drink had been taken, I obviously didn't read the compatibly blurb. My fault. But I'm curious. What is it exactly that this app does that means it can't function on what was 22 months ago a state of the art bit of kit? If it relied on a camera that would be understandable, but I'm genuinely intrigued. There are some visually stunning apps that still manage to function via the prehistoric frisbee that is the iPad 1, so I'm not convinced that the processing power caveat couldn't be worked around in the same way that we used to be able to adjust the graphics on video games to allow them to work on older computers.

This looks like a wonderful app and I would love to see it, I'll give it 4 stars because I won't trash it because I messed up, but please think about making it work for the millions of us who can't afford to upgrade a £500 piece of kit every 9 months.

Inspiring, beautiful, educational

Once I'd figured out how to get the sound (in iPad Settings make sure the side switch is set to control Mute rather than Lock Rotation) ... Now settling down to a simply captivating way to learn. This app is absolutely gorgeous and will keep me absorbed for hours as I explore a fab interface and stupendous graphics.

Amazing!

Absolutely love this app. Brilliant stuff, everything is explained clearly. The animations for the universe, stars, planets, moons and so forth are amazing on my iPad (2012) retina graphics look gorgeous. Lacks the some things I'd like to know more about, I can't find Pluto and other outer dwarf planets but hopefully they'll add more information in the future. Best £4.99 I ever spent on an app. All iPad, iPhone apps should be this well made.

Fantastic job

If I had this app when I was in school, I would have been far more interested in science! It's beautifully done and has so much information. Visually stunning too. Great way to learn about the universe starting from the smallest building blocks and working your way up through planets and galaxies.

Awe-inspiring!

This App took my breath away. The level of detail and also material that this app covers is incredible. The interface and the way it interacts is just brilliant. Completely absorbing. What the new iPad was made for. Cannot recommend anymore highly even if the subject matter is not your cup of tea, it's worth getting just to see what happens when you get talented app developers and someone with a passion for something together.

This set a new standard in app design.

There really are two showcase apps, the magic of reality and this one..it was purchased for our daughter but already I have learnt so much from it..one or two little niggles with zooming but don't let that put you off.

The whole design of this app from video quality, structure of information and navigation is an absolute joy to behold.

A must have for any space geek...

Ok you don't really have to be a space geek, but if you have any interest in space at all you will love this app. Full of fascinating knowledge of the wonders of the universe. Presented by the one and only Brian coxs. A professor who will probably one day answer the ultimate question of "life the universe and everything!!.. And I bet its not 42!!! :-)

A new generation of app : WOW!

This is the kind of app that makes your ipad purchase worthwhile. The menu system is amazing and the 3d experience of the universe takes it all to another level. And then there are all the videos and content that explain every element of the universe. Ive been immersed for the last hour.

The downside is that its quite a big app and you need to be on wifi to stream the video. And sometimes it's a bit jittery, but a small price to pay.

If you are into astronomy, astrology or borderline geek, this is a no brainer app to buy especially for parents of kids. New generation of astrology geeks are about to awaken thanks to professor cox.

A intriguing app

I really enjoyed the wonders tv series and the books were great too so i had Downloaded this app today, it very smooth and easy to use. The graphics are phenomenal. Beautiful layout in every sense of the word. Not seen any bugs yet... If you want to learn about what our universe is all about and what are the building blocks for everything we know then this is a great app. Well worth the £4.99 introductory price!
