Not happy

I was taking a look at the app, and it asked to get verified so naturally did so, unfortunately with Apple Pay it was so quick to take it I didn’t have any time to read anything...
Hopefully will get a refund but waiting to see that.

Good community but the app should be improved

The couchsurfer community is great, with many amazing hosts. The app however lacks a lot of basic functionality, such as being able to tag travel companions.

Great, but..

The interface is perfectly fine and functional, love the map you can colour in and the paragraph addition is much welcomed. However, you cannot access your schedule, it just freezes on the page which is annoying. Can it please be sorted out and it makes checking who is staying a complete chore as I have to use the web version instead which isn’t as user friendly (but at least it works), if this was fixed it would get 5 stars hands down!

Actual surfing is meh but meeting people is great

I’ve sent loads of messages but only ever had one person actual accept my lodging request.
However, I’ve used the app loads of times to meet people while traveling for activities and nightlife, which had been great.

Read people’s profiles before sending a request

Have the courtesy of reading a profile before requesting to stay, you can tell if someone has not ..... sadly I just delete there request ...

App review

Couchsurfing.org connects people of all ages from all walks of life in a safe and practical way: perhaps one of the best uses of internet one can imagine. It’s great! The app is functional - just started using it - but from what I can see it’s almost as good as logging in to its website from a browser. I’ll still probably use the latter when looking for hosts before travelling. Great work!

More reliable to pay for accommodation

With a paid service you get a certain amount of control over the end result, be that a bed for the night, or plate of food. There’s a degree of predictability. You get to plan and decide. Conversely in this situation based on receiving the hospitality of strangers you really don’t get the same degree of comfort or reliability. You certainly need a back up plan and if you get lucky enough to find what you’re looking for, and it comes without a catch, then that’s a real bonus.
So it’s a bit like entering raffles. You might win a prize, but you can’t say when or what it will be and you might end up spending as much on the tickets as the prize is worth.

Somewhat limited

The app is a bit quirky. It’s not as intuitive as it could be. I spend a lot of time in menus trying to remember how to do certain things like update my current location. (Why don’t they use , location services to get this info).
Sometimes when you create an event, the app will say the event can’t be created. So you hit the button again, and then later find out you’ve created multiple events.
You can’t see events in another area, which makes it difficult to plan ahead.
There is less functionality than just opening safari and visiting the regular website.

So far so good

The people I’ve met using this app are very interesting and when used effectively, the app is a great way to effectively socialise with travellers and hosts at home and abroad. There are some dodgy people, as with every app, but they are easily spotted with common sense (I.e.: they have no pictures/ no pictures with their face in them and are asking to hangout). Great way to make different friends as experiences stemmed from this app will illustrate that it is not solely about saving money on accommodation. A shortfall of the app itself is the interface. It works but it could be tidier. You are likely to need to switch to other, arguably more advanced, apps for prolonged communication.

Best thing for solo travelers

I’ve travelled the world using Couchsurfing and met some amazing people! I’ve only stayed with people who have at least a few references, it’s always been safe, fun and unique! It’s great to stay with a local person while travelling abroad to experience the local life and culture. I also love to host people in my home, it’s like travelling without leaving your town. The people on CS are outgoing and have some cool stories, boring people aren’t adventurous enough to do this kind of thing. The app is easy to use and functions well. If you’re new to CS, I recommend spending some time filling out the profile, adding photos and maybe getting some of your friends who are already on CS to write you references. Those will appear as ‘personal’ references and are a good start. Then go ahead and start travelling/ hosting and have fun!

Change needed

LET US CLICK INTO PROFILES OF PEOPLE WHO LEFT REFERENCES FFS! How are we meant to check whether those people are real users instead of blank profiles? This is the most CRUCIAL change you need to bring back. Another thing is - why can't we check friend list of other users like we can on the web version? This is important too because some new CSers may not have reference but have some friends who already do couchsurfing - if we can see that it's more likely they are real people and more likely for us to host them!

Force you to put location to always on to use hangouts. No reason for that. “While using the app” would work just fine. If you switch it off from always they won’t even let you to talk to people you started hangouts with.

Verification means signing up for premium membership

I like Couchsurfing as a concept. However when I am asked to verify myself and it will cost me £48 my warning lights go on to me this seems like a bit of a scam. If you want to sell premium membership Then advertise it correctly it correctly.

People make it bad

So the app works really well and Couchsurfing in general is a fantastic concept which I’ve used a few times now and happily so.
I would just like to see admins/ people in charge cracking down a bit more on the fake profiles and something done about the junk/bloat profiles.

Needs work!

Overall this is not a bad app and it could be great but it is let down by a few bugs at the time of writing. The worst offender is the messaging in the Hangouts section: the message bar is almost off the screen on the iPhone app which makes sending a message very awkward, it is also impossible to send a message of more than one line. This is incredibly frustrating - please fix it guys!

The app has always been great but

You need to up the game and release and update for new phones as soon as they are launched. It’s horrific on my iPhoneX. The developers version was released way before the actual phone launch so the fix should’ve been out at the very start. I can’t send messages longer than one line on hangouts, it keeps crashing on it.

Discover a world of social experience.

Stumbled across this app by chance. I was looking for a place to stay in New York prior to my trip and I wondered if such a thing existed as a couch surfing app - turns out yes there did exist such an app - and I've been hooked ever since. This is such a cool way to meet the comers and goers of my local city, from all across the world. I've already hosted a group of Greek girls and we had the funnest week hanging out and I've got more guests to come! I can't recommend this app enough for people who love new social experiences, learning about new cultures and meeting complete strangers and becoming good friends by the time they leave.
