Buggiest Streamer

Not sure how or why this app fails to do what every other streamer can do. Download offline is buggy af, loses progress each time and if you get signal whilst watching offline the app just crashes. I’ve also tried many times to chromecast or airplay to no avail. Avoid Rakuten.

No AirPlay

The mobile app has no implementation of AirPlay (it used to, but it was removed without warning), so I’m unable to cast from my phone to my Apple TV, and the Apple TV app does not allow you to sign in to your account, so you can’t play any of the media you have bought.
Overall a very poor experience. Please either bring back airplay or accounts in the Apple TV app

Apps are awful

Both the TV app and phone apps are terrible. The TV app is extremely poor quality with frequent artifacting throughout. The iPhone app is awful too, neither airplay or Google casting work at all. If I didn’t get free rentals from my energy company I would never use Rakuten and will never pay for a rental from them when they are the worst option available by far.

Inconsistent

Price - I had a voucher, and looked at watching one film. If you go on the website, the renting price was 50p less than what was stated on the app.
Watching - when watching the film, it was glitchy throughout the film, even though it is a very recent film release. It was that it needed to buffer, it sound static every 10 seconds which made the watching of the film frustrating

Painful

Painful to sort through your content and find what you want. No option to mark favourites or sort/filter just a huge list of titles that you have to scroll through.
Painful to track downloads, especially for series - what have you viewed? No ‘next episode’ button. No easy way to navigate back.

Good selection of films. Poor functionality

Okay - let me start by saying the selection of films is pretty good. They are reasonably priced BUT what really grinds me is that I can be watching a film on y phone, typically downloaded for when I am at the gym running and then I close the app and it loses all reference of where I was up to. Netflix can do this, Amazon can do this, Disney can do this. Why not Rakuten. Such a frustrating thing to have to search for where you got up to each time.

I received a code to rent a premium movie. I can’t watch it on the Apple TV app because that doesn’t include premium content. And I can’t airplay it from my phone to my TV. So it’s not really a useful service for me until the Apple TV app can play rentals.

It’s like they don’t want you to use their app

I very rarely write a full review, but this app is something else. It’s not that Rakuten can’t technically make a good app, but it the odd design decisions that seem to deliberately not make it easy for consumers.
I wanted to watch a film, and theoretically the underlying code bases for iOS should be similar between iPhone and Apple TV.
Except you can’t sign in to access the film you rented on the Apple TV app (you can on the iPhone version).
Ok, fine. Get the iPhone app where you can sign in, and see if you stream it to the TV (I don’t want to watch a film on an iPhone screen). Wait! On an iOS phone you can’t AirPlay but you can chrome cast (which my Samsung tv does not do).
Third attempt - on Mac and airplay it. Wait again! Rakuten doesn’t work on safari. Try Firefox - it wants to play in SD mode, and even then won’t mirror.
Final attempt was an old laptop hooked up via HDMI.
Rakuten could make it easy to just log in with the Apple TV app but haven’t. It’s deliberately just making it difficult to use their service. And the frustrating thing is that it’s not due to technical difficulties. It’s just that they have not bothered to enable it and it’s difficult to fathom why.
Would avoid this app until they fix the issues.

Poor app features

App doesn’t allow casting, nor play movies via mirroring or nor play from a projector via HDMI. However, adds and trailers are playing with no issues but not movies. I would suggest the tech to develop these features that can enable to play movies via casting or HDMI or apple mirroring. Very disappointing

Cannot use vitality coupon

Cannot use vitality health insurance coupon on any of the apps mobile/ipad/Apple TV there’s simply no option for it. We have to go on a browser to put in the code before watching it on our tv/devices

Use the Apple Store instead

No log in function on the Apple TVos app for the ability to play rented films and No airplay support for the iOS app to “cast” them, read the small print, it says you need a chromecast. this app is only for watching on your device. The Apple Store is so much better, Rakuten even have the nerve to charge the same as the Apple Store prices for much less functionality and picture quality.

Watching purchased content

I have a collection of films and tv series that I have bought from Rakuten over the years but I can no longer watch them through the Apple TV app. Neither can you airplay or play over HDMI on to a TV. What was Rakuten’s explanation for this? Nothing - not a word. They seemed to have changed their business model from renting and selling quality content to streaming free rubbish. Really poor behaviour Rakuten, you will not be getting any more custom from me.

Frustrating to use

The Apple TV version of this app is useless. This version doesn’t allow mento cast even with permission and being on the same network. The settings button link in the app doesn’t respond and the app keeps telling that cannot find my Apple TV while all the other apps on the same phone cast perfectly

No HDMI support?

I didn’t even think this was possible in the modern age, but somehow this app doesn’t support mirroring my iPad screen to my monitor via HDMI! Had to watch my movie rental on my tiny iPad screen instead - wouldn’t have rented if this was made clear beforehand. Movie goes black screen when I plug in the hdmi cable but works fine the moment I unplug. All other apps are fine.

Rakuten have deliberately disabled access to movies I had previously purchased. The AppleTV app no longer allows you to log on and gain access to your Rakuten movie library. It only works on your mobile device. I will never go anywhere near this rip-off company again.

A lot better than I expected 😇😄

I have tried to watch a lot of live to shows on different platforms without signing in for example I tried to watch Paralympics on channel 4 for free but I can’t but when I want to watch something on Rakuten TV the app is just quote-on-quote GOLD the one issue is that want to watch some original live sports like UEFA champions league or NFL etc but that’s a normal problem since the platform is only one year old but over than that I’m impressed 😁

Barely functional - look elsewhere

As a rental platform it offers nothing that Amazon doesn’t. Except the following
1 No Playback of rentals on Apple TV
2 Only SD playback of rentals on a MacBook
3 No AirPlay support for casting
So if you want a crappier experience than the competition, but at the same price - Still don’t use this. There are better options.

You can’t stream to an Apple TV Device. You can’t pair the Apple TV app with your account. So if you are in the Apple eco system, you can only watch your purchases on your phone or tablet. Absolutely terrible.

Can’t use it on my Mac

So Having become a subscriber via my mac, they now won’t support video on a Mac through safari. I must download another browser like Firefox, which plays video hotter than safari so is detrimental to my equipment. Oh, I can watch trailers and ads, no conflict there, just can’t watch my library. Not impressed.

Spanish on UK Apple TV, no AirPlay either

What is the story with this app - it looks good on iOS yet their app on AppleTV shows Spanish only and doesn’t allow you to sign in with a UK account. Worse, the iOS app only allows you to AirPlay the audio - no video. This is a shame - because they have what looks like an excellent service if only their would pull their finger out and get the apps to work correctly in UK market.

Poor Viewing Experience on iPhone

The app letterboxes movies at the top, bottom and left and right when watching on an iPhone, meaning you watch movies in a strange small box, there is no option to zoom, there once was a zoom option, it got removed, it came back briefly but has been gone again for a very very long time, if this could be fixed then I’d have no qualms in saying it’s a solid app.

Useless App if you want to watch on the big screen

If you have an Apple TV the app is only available in Spanish, if you have an XBox the app is not around, if you have a PlayStation the app is not around. If you get the app for iPad then it will refuse to stream to your app TV. Only option to run on a web browser on a Mac and stream it to the Apple TV. Why even make an app if you have to use on a web browser. Very disappointed.

Some people are hearing impaired, you know!!

Not happy that subtitles are hard to come by, and then when you get a foreign film with some English thrown in, there are no subtitles for the dialogue. I need subtitles as someone who is hearing impaired. I’m not even deaf, I have hyperacusis, extreme sensitivity to sound. These services are so discriminatory. I’ve avoided Rakuten because of this and only came here to watch a foreign film I couldn’t find elsewhere. But I was unable to follow the English language parts. Very disappointing.

Just doesn't work

Open the app on my iPad, there are a few navigation controls and a blank page with a spinning wheel - nothing else happens
Open it on my Apple TV, its in spanish & once logged in I get nothing except error messages saying (in spanish) something like the operation could not be completed.
Website seems to work, shame it is telling me to open the app to watch my rental - because that just doesn't work.

No customer service. DO NOT BUY if you want to download your films

You used to be able to download you films onto your mobile device and this has not been possible now for 6 months despite assurances that it is being worked on. Why does it need to be worked on when it was already working? It has clearly been disabled and loyal customers are being lied to.

Worst Apple TV app ever

Rakuten TV app stuck in Spanish when all my defaults are English on the Apple TV (and phone).
Unusable, attempt to sign in and app crashes every few seconds. Also cannot air play from phone app, only sound transfers.
Situation so poor for so long that it can only be a deliberate attempt by Rakuten to ruin the service on iOS devices, In particular on Apple TV.
Whole service is so poor and ridiculously rubbish that I can’t be bothered to use my monthly ‘free’ Rakuten rentals from my bank account (let alone pay for anything on the ‘service’). Every time I go to try, few months apart, I get disappointed all over again that nothing has been fixed.

Apple TV app does not work

Dear Rakuten - please fix your Apple TV app. It defaults to Spanish and you cannot change any settings and cannot sign in. The app can therefore not be used as you cannot get past a “cancel /retry” pop up screen
This is not a new issue as if you read the reviews, this problem has been around for a long time yet you have not addressed the issue.
The app could be really good, but right now it is just appalling. If you want people to use and and spend money, please fix it!

A little princess

A delightful film. I watched it on my own as an adult and was completely immersed. I was not sure whether the film would interest me at first as the beginning was strange and set in India but of course it was all a part of the story.

Unreliable, Unstable

The most unreliable and unstable streaming app I’ve used.
I used this when it was Blinkbox (from Tesco). Then Talk Talk bought it, under both, no problems. Reliable and had no issues watching any selection from my library.
Since Rakuten acquired it, it’s gone to pot.
Sometimes I’ve had to select a film up to a dozen times and a dozen times the app closes before it’ll finally play.
Also, I bought a special edition of a film but, Rakuten won’t play that edition, just plays the standard edition.
I prefer to pay for what I watch rather than a subscription and, since Rakuten is one of only a few to offer this type of service, it’s the only reason I put up with this dire app. If there was someone else offering the same, I’d instantly switch.

Constant Buffering

This app came baked in with a new TV and I thought it’d be ideal, rather than having to download and then cast a film, this would be a one stop shop. Then came the buffering issue. I downloaded the app to start downloading my purchases thinking this would solve that problem but no. It can still only make it about a third of the way through then the circle of doom appears. I ended up re buying my UHD films through Google Play which doesn’t have any of these problems.

Love this app been using on my smart tv for years always gets the newest films. Only complaint with the mobile app is that the picture doesn’t cover the entire screen and I would prefer an option to enlarge it. Great app nonetheless!

You have no control over screen size

I recently downloaded Rakuten tv for my new smart tv and thought it was great bought a few movies and then downloaded them onto my iPhone in UHD. I then went to watch these movies and to my dismay saw that it took up a fraction of the screen, however remained optimistic as I believed it was like Netflix where simply pinching the screen would fix the issue, however this isn’t the case and you have no control over screen size at all in the app. I found this very disappointing, as well as the fact that the help centre had no information on how to solve the problem. So overall very disappointed with the mobile version of the app and wouldn’t recommend getting it unless you have a smart tv.

I love the app

The app has reasonably-priced offers every now and then and I have been able to build up quite a sizeable library of films I like and that I can watch every now and then. Besides I like the fact that every now and then, even fairly newly-released films are discounted to rent or to buy. It’s definitely one of my go-to-apps for watching movies. Thanks for reading.

Not full screen

I have iphone X and recently started to use rakuten tv service. Unfortunately not possibility to watch video content on full screen even when you rent or purchase a movie. Hope this will be fixed soon. Even when I tap twice on the screen is still small picture. No point to use rakuten TV on mobile devices.

Buffering

I’ve had rakuten for two years and it’s great on my LG tv but when it comes to my iPhone X and my iPad Pro the films just keep on buffering I’ve tried everything they said to do like turning your broadband off for 5 minutes and turning your phone off and uninstall app and reinstall app and also I tried there free movie sintel in sd and hd and they both buffer the reason why I mention this is because most of my films are uhd and they say that is the reason why I’m getting buffering but like I said I tried there free movie in hd and sd and they both buffer please rakuten sort this out this has been happening for 2 years..

I downloaded this app and I watched the film of rampage starring the Dwayne Johnstone ( the rock) and I enjoyed watching the movie it was fantastic I would recommend this app to anyone as you have a choice of free films or paying to watch a movie or even rent a movie

Latest no longer supports older technology

Just bought a film for the kids to find that the app was updated on Oct 31 and no longer supports anything under iOS 10. That a problem as my kids use the older technology to view via a chromecast device.
I understand that things move on but some warning would have been nice, instead we have had to turn another film provider until I can afford to upgrade the iPads.
Rake ten will have to lose out on revenue from me until then!

This site and app has been perfect for me from the second I signed up, I can start watching a film at home on my smart TV, and then carry on watching the movie on my iPhone plus getting certain films on early release, all I can say is it’s awesome love it!!!....

Rakuten - An good alternative to the others in the market!

Have used Rakuten for several years and found it to be good value. The streaming speed is consistent for 4K viewing and when there have been issues they have refunded me without me having to chase them.

Loads less than 20% of the time

The app will not load properly, it just keeps buffering. Restarting it will, maybe, reach the home page, but then going to my library proves fruitless. Close app, try again, this time nothing. Open and go straight to the library. No luck there. Open again, home page loads finally. Click on new release to check prices, more buffering and eventually give up waiting!
Essentially, I can’t watch the films and TV I have paid for. Waiting for an update or bug fix but nothing.

Latest update makes iPad unusable

Cannot use preferred method of watching as latest update not comparable with older iPad (4). Many £100s now only available on iPhone. Rubbish. Do not have this problem with any other media streamer.

Great, but iPad (2nd Gen.) update frustration !!!

App is excellent. Loads of content and easy to use. Would be 5-stars if it wasn't constantly in my apps to update list, when it isn't compatible with my iOS/iPad combination -- iOS 9.0 or later, yes; iPad 3rd Generation or later, NO!!!

No control over video settings

Unlike Netflix which gives you the option to make videos full screen (i.e. playing behind the screen notch) or to make it smaller (thus avoiding the notch) Rakuten seem to have decided to just play the movie full screen regardless. This might not be much of an issue for an English language film, but I rented a film which requires subtitles, and all the subtitles are cropped off the bottom edge of the screen making the whole exercise pointless and a waste of a rental. I’ve tried making the subtitles larger, but it doesn’t help. I understand part of the problem is Apple’s stupid design flaw, but if other apps can give us a workaround why not this one?

Doesn’t remember your position

If you come out of the app for any reason there is a good chance it will forget your position and make you start from the beginning. This would not be so bad if you could reliably scrub through the film, but more often than not you can’t change your position in the film. This has been an issue for a long time.

The Happy Prince is excellent!!

Loved the film. The story was told with accuracy and sensitivity. The acting was sublime. This is the first time I have used this App, and unfortunately, it was not compatible with my Apple TV, or my Firestick. It is a testament to the quality of the film that I persevered and watched the movie on my laptop, not my preferred way of viewing anything. Great movie, but check this App is compatible with your devices!!

Extremely disappointing

Bought a film on website but can’t watch it on Xbox app
Discovered the reason why
They charge more for films purchased on Xbox even though it’s exactly the same film. So if you buy on website it doesn’t work on Xbox etc. The worst service around, they’re disgusting moneygrabbers.
When you watch a film on tablet often the film will chose midway through and restarts again at the start. Because Rakuten are such money grabbers and end up watching the film on a tiny phone or small tablet instead of my big screen tv. Even though they have an app for Xbox it won’t let you watch films paid for on website or app.
Buffering problems add to the disappointment and your credits expire 48 hours after redemption even if you haven’t got to purchase a movie or if you’re half way through one.

Rubbish and a rip off! AVOID AVOID AVOID

Initially I chose talk talk tv for my movies, but then was forced onto this rip off! When my movies transferred I lost probably 25 movies/tv episodes in total, ratuken said this would happen, but that I would be compensated with points to buy or rent other movies and tv episodes that I lost! But the relief was short lived when I realized that I could only by maybe 3 movies with it. I then contacted them about this but I have been completely ignored! So don’t waste your time or money with these con merchants. Alongside this streaming is off and on I quite often can’t even get access to my library.

WASTING MY TIME

When my free 'super points' run out (which I have no idea how many I have left) I won't be bothering with this app. I went abroad and this app was totally unusable. All it does is pick up the app and website of the country you're in. You can't login to the UK version. Having downloaded a film at home, it wouldn't let me watch it abroad. I've never see that before. I was stunned. It really made my day. I won't make the same mistake again. Oh by the way thanks TalkTalk for passing me off to this pile of 💩

Growing on Me

I was not sure about this app at first. One film I streamed was a poor transfer with lots of ghosting. But it has grown on me the more I have used it. I like the range of uhd availability and the value of the offers. I guess this is as much about the service as it is the app. All good!

Inconsiderate procedures - movie expired 15 mins before the end of it and never got to see the end.

I have had Rakuten for ages but really started using it again after I got a free first time voucher. Have rented quite a lot of movies and though service was ok until today - decided to finish watching a movie i got over the weekend and my rent period expired 15 mins before the end of the movie!!!!! There was no warning that the film will just be stopped and honestly i assumed the time i had remaining on the rent would be from when I started to watch it. That is so inconsiderate- either put a warning message to say that there isn’t enough time left on the rental to watch the whole film or change how the timings work, surely if you started watching it whilst you’re still within the 48 hours paid for you should be allowed to watch it until the end ! So frustrating!!!!!

Can’t login won’t let me transfer my library from TalkTalk tv

I can’t transfer my library from TalkTalk tv because rakuten doesn’t recognise my email password combination, I can login to TalkTalk tv okay try to transfer my movies no chance I emailed rakuten many times to try to solve problem to no avail looks like I wasted my money buying movies that you can’t download to your own computer. Never again will I but films from a digital service!!!!!

No Payment Pin

Goo content but do NOT use this app for your children. I made that mistake and have lost a lot of money as a result of my child renting other films simply by clicking on them. She just sees the picture of the film and doesnt realise she is buying them. i contacted Rakuten and the best they could do was tell me they don’t offer a Payment Protection feature on the account. I wonder why?🤔
Would be interested to see how much they make as a result of these “accidental purchases”.

The first app I turn to for new release rentals

I love Rakuten TV and have been using it since the days of Wuaki. I have never had a problem with downloads and enjoy the full experience. They always have the latest films available to rent so quickly that I don’t feel disappointed if I don’t get to the cinema to see a blockbuster because I’ll get to see it quickly enough.

Can’t watch downloaded film

The first film I rented and downloaded to watch at home offline was great, but settled down to watch the second one - really looking forward to it- and whoops! It buffers after nine seconds, and keeps on buffering.... forever. I’ve sent an email to their Customer Support so let’s see if they can unfreeze it for me before the 22 hours I’ve got left to watch it are up. Weird help page on the website invited me to register for immediate support but wouldn’t actually let me do it. Not reassuring.
