Description

“I love Magic Letters, a great app with a terrific story line. I can't wait to use with kids at school!”
Libby Curran - USA Teacher of the year 2012, People Magazine
Rated 5/5 and Recommended by educationalappstore.com, official advisor to the Tablets for Schools scheme.
Learn to write the letters of the alphabet with Magic Letters. Explore a magical world where you learn to cast spells by writing the letters of the alphabet correctly. Use the spells you learn in your spell book to help you meet interesting characters and solve simple problems, all the time practicing your writing skills. The more you write each letter the more spells you master.
With over 70 problems to solve your child will have plenty of opportunity to practice writing while enjoying solving unique problems.
How to write the letters is explained and demonstrated for each letter to help your child learn to write the whole alphabet. The basic phonic sound of the letters has also been included to aid learning. The whole story and all guidance is spoken aloud so children don’t need to be able to read. The speech can be turned off allowing your child to practice their reading skills.
Some of the main features include:
•Demonstrations and lessons explaining how to write each of the 26 letters of the alphabet.
•18 Levels with over 70 unique problems allowing your child to learn and practice writing.
•Story and guidance is spoken aloud (can be turned off to practice reading skills).
•Listen to the sound of the letters as you learn them.
•Auto save; saves your child’s progress, allowing them to carry on from where they left off.
•Pick from multiple routes through the game making the order different each time you play.
•Note: children have to write the letters fairly accurately to proceed, but if they fail too often they are allowed to move on

"This a fantastic app to get your children acquainted with letters, words and writing out the alphabet.
The metaphor of the app of casting spells and actually practising spelling is wonderful to motivate children for playing the app. Our children loved the idea of 'mastering spells' as they progressed through the app.
We really enjoyed this app and think that it is a great addition for four and five year olds who are in the process of learning how to write and read. They will be enchanted by the magic in the story and will feel very motivated to continue playing, learning and casting 'spells'!" educationalappstore.com

Nice App - Terrible Voice Over

Nicely made app and my daughter really enjoys practising her letters, but seriously what were they thinking with the voice over?
A boring voice who cannot tell a story and sounds like it was recorded in someone's kitchen with a £10 microphone from Argos.

Excellent App

My son used this at school and it was recommended to us for some extra writing practice. The extra practice has paid off (in only a few sessions) and he loves playing it. In case its not clear (I didn’t read the description), your child is asked to write letters in the sky with a wand to cast spells. So your child learns to write to correctly and is rewarded by producing a spell. The spells are then added to their spell book and they go out and use them in different situations around the castle (Like summoning a cat to scare away a mouse or a yo-yo for a jester that has run out of ideas). It is a brilliant app, definitely one of the best apps we have bought.

Best Letter Writing App

My son loves this game. Unlike many other writing apps (and we have tried many others - including several paid ones) this one really held his attention. He’s learnt how to write the whole alphabet in basically a week and because its a real adventure with interesting little challenges he’s really into it!

Excellent App, needs a tweak or two

This app is excellent and has really helped my daughter with her writing. I'd tried a bunch of free apps and took a gamble on this one and it paid off, it's by far the best on the apps store. Just a couple of small details could do with a tweak, the ability to sync progress between devices is a must. Having to repeat ground already covered when her iPad died and I had to lend her mine really annoyed my daughter and almost put her off. Also, the voices are a little robotic and are not very emotive.

Great App

Excellent app that teaches the correct formation of letters. We use this app across our infant school, and the children love it.

Outstanding

Of all the writing apps we have tried (and we have tried most of them) this is easily the best. Our daughter loved helping out around the castle and can now write each letter without help. It was a struggle to get her to write more than a few letters on the other apps we tried. With this, she was desperate to learn how to write the letters to be able to cast the next spells!

Fizzie

This would be great app except that I can't find a way to go back to the beginning. I've tried it out for grandson who would love it BUT each time I go back to the home page, it says Continue. I don't want to continue. I want to go back to Start.
Any ideas?

Flawed realisation

I bought this for my daughter who has a tendency to write letters starting in the wrong place and going in the wrong direction. While this program helps her to start in the right place, it doesn't seem to care what happens after that. In the case of an "O" for example you can write it clockwise or anticlockwise. See how many ways you can write an "a". This is not helpful at all and, as a programmer, not hard to fix. Needs to be improved before I could recommend it for this reason alone. On other points, the "voice talent" is anything but, being very dull and quite annoying. The "story" is weak and my kids were not at all inspired! A waste of money, however little it cost!

Writing can be fun too!

A bit quirky but definitely good fun. I like the wizard story and the 'letter writing' adventures around the castle. Love this App, Surely its a classic.

Dross.

The narrators voice is infuriatingly dull and slightly regional English accent, although I can't quite tell exactly where she's from. The story is read in a dreary, dull, drudging kind of way, slow and plodding in that monotone voice... we were getting tired of it before we even reached the first challenge.
But the writing part of the game is frustrating too; it demands more accuracy than my 5 year old or I could manage. There were only so many times we could bear to hear that dreary voice telling us "that's not quite right" before we were ready to throw the device across the room. After a few set backs my son started cheating; a spot or a line to get past the "that's not right" until the app offers the option "do you want me to do it for you?" after the 3rd attempt. I couldn't blame him, it's really very unforgiving and not at all encouraging.
In all honesty I resent having paid for it.

Very frustrating

In principle this is a good app, but it is so frustrating.
The woman's voice very quickly got on my nerves!
As for tracing the letters, unless your spot on all I got was "that's not quite right..." Thought it was my fat fingers, so used a stylus, even then not very good.
So, my 3.5 year old who's really learning quickly but struggles to support a pen for a long period found this app very frustrating.
Overall not too bad, but use it in conjunction with other apps.

Learn to write

The app helps kids learn to write by showing how to write a letter then getting them to try themselves by using their finger on the touch screen and tracing the letter, success rewards them with a spell. The narrator reads the on screen text as well, the illustration style is fun bright and attractive. When letters have been learnt they are added to a spell book and the spells can be cast to help with tasks around the game world. There are multiple location to visit from a home screen where different spells can be used. My only criticism would be the voiceovers seem to be only recorded by a single female narrator, it would be nice for different voices to be used for the different characters in the game, great app though and the kids will have lots of fun learning whilst playing the game.
