Description

"Every amateur astronomer yearns for clear, dark skies, and this exhaustive app helps you find them."
- Sky At Night Magazine 2017
"Several astronomy-oriented weather apps are available, but Scope Nights has become my favorite… it does a fine job of summarizing the data in a clear and understandable fashion."
- Sky & Telescope Magazine 2015
"Conventional weather forecasts meet the needs of Earthly dwellers; news of cloud cover when sensible folk are asleep is hardly required. Now via this wonderful App… local forecasts for nocturnal weather… are now available."
- Astronomy Now Magazine 2012
If you’re a stargazer, astronomer or astrophotographer, analysing conventional weather forecasts for favourable night time conditions can be very time consuming, you just want to know when to plan your stargazing trip or set up your telescope. Scope Nights analyses night time weather forecast data for you and shows exactly when and where to go for the darkest and clearest skies, as well as offering customisable stargazing ratings to suit your telescope and observing habits, stargazing notifications, and a detailed light pollution map showing nearby dark sky sites and observatories. Finding clear dark skies and discovering the night sky has never been easier!
PLAN YOUR OBSERVING WITH CUSTOM STARGAZING RATINGS
• View at a glance which nights will be good for astronomy using smart weather analysis with clear stargazing ratings and animated weather icons to quickly see if it’s worth preparing your telescope or planning a stargazing trip

Doesn’t scale to iPad Pro

Doesn’t work on the iPad Pro - the stuff at the bottom of the screen is truncated. I normally wouldn’t have given a one star review for this but I can see someone else saying exactly the same thing three years ago. Not fixing it in a five quid app for three years is unforgivable. Gonna request a refund.

Unstable - forecast not available.

In principle a good all, but frequently states “forecast not available” which you have to click about 10 times to bypass.

Used to be excellent but

Hasn’t been able to give my results for my local location anymore. Gives one for a location 4 miles away. Cannot reply on it at all now. Shame, it used to be excellent. Not worth paying for now

This app doesn’t work

This app doesn’t work. What is it still doing on here.
None of its problems have been sorted I assume the developer has just given up on it.
Although last year I think they posted something on Facebook (a picture) other than that I’ve not seen any other movement to get things sorted.
ay! ok. I'll choose another

New to the app

Overall seems very good although seems dated in respect of updates. Find the global weather not available pop ups a nuisance as they seem to duplicate as do my sites but sure will Dort out. Not sure how to get on watch though

Scope nights

So far so good! Need to fix the weather unable to connect bug! Quite annoying. Has been over a year and weather bug still not fixed. Beginning to make me think of using something else.

So so helpful..

Finding a forecast app that is tailored so specifically to astronomy has been a godsend. Longer range forecasts to start that sense of anticipation that the clouds might actually be parting sometime are still necessary but having a detailed breakdown of the next five days together with moon stats is a superb resource, and clearly designed by an astronomer
AlexG-C

Potentially so good

Used for a number of years as first choice app for astrophotography weather forecasting but now no longer fits on my iPad Air screen correctly and on both my iPad and iPhone each time I open the app I get multiple messages for my saved locations telling me that “The global forecast is not available” for each location. I then have to click on OK to get rid of each message and have about 10 saved locations. Does this mean that the forecast that is eventually displayed is accurate or not?
Come on developers! Please sort this out. These problems should have been pointed out by multiple users and persist.

Rubbish

When I search for locations, dark sky locations in Galloway Forrest park Scotland and Tiede National park in Tenerife it says the locations can’t be found and doesn’t give me any data

After being disappointed with a previous upgrade it's only fair to complement the author on the most recent upgrade. A great app and an essential tool for planning your astronomy nights. Great job.

This used to be my go-to app for astronomy weather however, it appears to have been abandoned now and been showing errors for a couple of years. Pity, as it really was a great app for plannning with.

Good but buggy

Works well but has an annoying bug where it continually adds duplicate locations. Also lots of annoying “can’t get weather data” pop up messages even though the weather data appears fine

Useful guide but battling against UK weather

So far so good on the whole, biggest issue as ever is that our weather is so hard to predict.
I get a comment each time that weather info is not available
It also struggles to refresh so I get info going back a night or two.

App is dead

Purchased this app expecting a great weather app. Unfortunately it no longer works, only provides a weeks weather which is no good as we know weather changes. The developers Facebook page informs customers of this issue and that was a posted a year ago with no change. There is no information on the App Store and If you purchase this app and want your money back apple won’t give it back. Had to put a claim in through PayPal which I won.

Total rubbish now

This software used to work. Now it does not work at all! The developer acknowledges that there has been an issue but it is not fixed and their explanation that you should still get uk/us weather is wrong, you cannot!
Was four star, now no star.
Also the ‘support’ page is impenetrable if you want to contact the developer

Star Performer!

Scope Nights is a brilliant app! It helps me to plan my astrophotography with a five day tailored forecast, both for my viewing location and my viewing criteria. It is generally accurate over a five-day horizon, enough to make preparations and viewing plans, and is very accurate within 24-36 hours. Of course, this depends on the quality of the local forecasting feed for your viewing location.

Dead app - that used to be good..

This was the only app I used to use to check the conditions before planning to get my kit out. It now just gives me an error message when trying to look at the weather conditions for my area. Looking at other reviews over the last 12 months, it seems this is not an isolated issue. The app appears to be dead now and I will be looking for another. Developers - please can you give an update on this? The app appears to be available on the App Store still so presumably people could still be purchasing it when it appears that it is no longer supported.

Seems to have partially stopped working! I’ve used it for years and it was reliable, but now with my iPhone XS it sticks. Showing the weather for last Monday and today is Wednesday. No longer sure it’s reliable, which is a shame.

Best Astronomy Forecast - Broken since March 21

This is the most accurate forecast I have found. A truly excellent app and would have received 5 stars except it has had a problem since March 21 ( now September). The app still seems to work for local forecasts I. The Uk but is showing an error message that global forecasts are not working . No update from the developer since March. Still, if you can put up with ok’ing the error message each time you use it it is still the best forecast out there.

The best and the only app you will need, but not anymore

I've been using this app since long time. It's was one of the best, and very accurate information about the weather forecast. I always rely on this application before setting up my telescope. However now it no longer works since months, and no any new news. Looks this application is dead.

Really Useful for astronomy

This app is just what I’ve been looking for. It gives you a weekly forecast of good viewing conditions. So you have a bit of a heads up on when you can get your telescope out.

Time to get the issues sorted out

Used to use this as my goto clear sky forecast, then the ‘unable to get global forecast’ messages started. There’s a good explanation by the developer about why it’s happened, but it’s about time it was sorted. There’s no easier way to alienate your user base than by not providing regular updates, even if it’s just a “sorry, I’m still working on it, this is what’s happening” message. I’m sorry to say this app is getting VERY close to being deleted now, which is a shame.

Excellent Stargazing App :-)

Probably the most used App which I have on my phone. It is the most accurate App I have used for predicting if I am going to be getting my scope out during the next few nights, and although I do not really believe what it is telling me in more than fours nights time, I think this is true for any weather forecasting. Would recommend to anyone into Stargazing and one of the upgrades, which gives you a 'Dark Sky' map, is handy when you are travelling and want to find an area to visit with some binos.

No better app for amateur astronomy

Seriously this app tells you what a nights observing is going to be like.
It showed -1c and sure enough I had ice on the tripod . If it says fair you will have some good sky and some rough. But when it says excellent it’s time for the thermals as it will be horizon to horizon clear.
I can’t praise highly enough.

Scope nights

I found this app to be very useful in the past. I have had the global forecast failing and was most impressed with Martin’s narrative to let us know.

Has stopped downloading global forecasts

This has been my go to app for quite a while. There isn’t an app around that is 100% accurate, and this is no exception, it once you are within a few hours of your planned observing time it is usually good. However just recently it has stopped downloading global forecasts and only gives forecasts for 5 days ahead when it used to be around twice that. Disappointingly I’m not getting any response from their support either.

Stopped working

The developer is seriously arrogant if they cannot be bothered to reply to any communication. This used to be a great tool but has completely stopped updating since the last IOS update and clearly there is no further support for it.

Useful but....

I’ve been using this app since it came out and I do rely on it but the weather info provided to the app is not as accurate as I would wish. I now find myself cross checking with other sources of met data to see what the consensus is.
But my biggest problem now is that the app no longer scales to my iPad Pro. This presents itself as the app screen is too big to fit on my iPad screen. So crucial boxes such as the search box is almost impossible to access. I reinstalled the app but it made no difference. I contacted the developer but have not received any reply.

Lack of Updates - app left to die.

Was an excellent app, clear to read and generally accurate enough to plan actual astronomy sessions.
However after multiple iOS updates it seems that this app no longer functions - which is a shame.
Hopefully the dev takes an interest in this app again at some point, but after two years, I would presume the chance is slim.

Useful planning tool

This actually works. It’s massively better than looking at the standard weather forecasts and trying to work out if it’s going to be ok for observing or not. I do astrophotography and Scope Nights offers me the ability to really see when it’s going to be usably clear with all the detail I need that impacts the photos, and not just clear to the eye.
Great app, love it, it’s now my primary weather planning tool.

Ignores High Cloud Cover

The app IS useful and well presented and I always use it first, but I have discovered it tends to disregard high cloud, such as cirrus. I am wondering if it just uses the data the BBC/TV stations uses? So, to double check I have to use Metcheck.com, which is highly accurate and gives amounts of low, medium and high cloud. An example I am thinking of is today, Scope nights is saying clear skies (less than 10%) but Met heck.com is saying 54% cirrus.
Metcheck. com is free. I think you should get your data from the same source.

Problematic

Running the App off IPhone 8+, had to delete the app several times as it wouldn’t load up properly. After eventually getting it up and running it seems to duplicate scope sites on the scope nights main page. Added 4 scope sites and have now 8 sets of data and this duplication seems to grow after a couple days. Would only allow me to add 4 scope sites and then tells me I’ve reached my maximum number of scope sites...Think there needs to be a major update since the last one 2 yrs ago.

Best Star gazing planing app

Ive been using the Scope Nights App for over 3 years now and it is invaluable for planning my viewing sessions, whether I’m planning a Messier Marathon or a transit of Mercury or a trip to Kielder Forest this app has it all, up to date weather forecasts, select your viewing time, and viewing location either by current location or move the map to a manual location and get a up to date forecast. This will certainly help you find those clear nights!

Best stargazing weather app

Been using this for years & always given fairly reliable forecasts. Saves me a lot of hassle weather watching & scouring weather websites as sends a notification to my Apple Watch when good stargazing expected. Also love the fact that I can customise the ratings to suit my observing needs. Wouldn’t be without it!

Useful but always changing!

I know it’s never easy predicting the weather, and in the UK especially. But I find it frustrating that it often changes (almost in realtime) and I can’t plan much. I also can’t just drop what I’m doing so planning is kind of key in my day to day.

Brilliant

I would definitely recommend this app.
Usually spot on for accuracy. I travel the country in my motorhome and wild camp. When in Scottish highlands this app helps me decide where to go a few days in the future to maximise dark skies with cloudy Scottish weather.

Brilliant

I have tried a lot of apps for astronomy and have to say this one is simply brilliant and the update is great.
It is straight forward to use, informative and well constructed. The dark sky map is a great way to discover new sights.
It would be great if the app could be developed to be able take a basic measurement of a dark sky area using the iPhone and being able to share recommend locations and data. Maybe something along those lines could also be placed on the developers web page?
That’s a five star recommendation from me. Keep up the good work.

2018-08-16

Potentially Excellent - Seems Glitchy

It is possibly a quirk of the iPhone X, but when I run this app it seems to populate my Scope Sites list with the exact same site 20 or so times no matter how many times I delete them. When I then try to add a site I want on my list it tells me the list is full and I have to delete one before I can add any more. Because of this, I can’t look at the weather for the actual places I want to go to, just have to look at the nearest on on my list and hope. Am I doing something wrong or is it a latest version of IOS issue?? Please help, I love the functionality but this issue is killing my enthusiasm for the otherwise great app!

Absolutely love it! ✨

I write as an amateur astronomer of modest experience, but to date this is the best Astro app I’ve used.
It is clear, sleek & very user friendly; the notifications are great for letting you know what’s happening & when - this is particularly useful when you have limited time for observations & have to ‘pre-book’ your ‘astro moments’.
Highly recommended.

Best amateur astronomy app

This app is superb to plan the clear nights when you can get out your telescope. Packed with info about sunset, moonrise, moon phase, weather, viewing conditions, light pollution map and loads more. If you have a telescope or astronomical binoculars then you need this app.

Moon rise and set times

Edit: Initially gave four stars. The feature I'd have liked to have seen added has been included in the 2.5 update. Looking forward to testing it out. :)
Original review:
A good solid app, but it would be a great improvement if it gave to rise and set times for the moon.
If you're wanting to pick a night with no moon, the app will happily point to a night with a new moon, but completely ignore nights with a full moon that's below the horizon.

Indispensable for amateur astronomers

I use this app to plan all my observing sessions. It has all the information that I need in one place, not only informing me if it’s going to be a clear night but also what humidity to expect (important because high humidity may fog up your telescope) but also the moon phase. You can set the parameters that could limit your particular observing requirements so that it only gives you the “green light” when all the conditions are just right. Excellent.

Superb App

I was hesitant about paying £4.99 for an app to tell me the weather for my Astrophotography, but having now used it for a few months it has proved to be the only app that I refer to when planning to get my equipment out. Of course it is reliant upon the British weather, but that's life in the UK! Get it, you won't regret it. Would love a destop version as well?

Love this. Other weather apps might give you lots and lots of data but that means you have to concentrate for a moment and make a judgement call on viewing conditions. If you are an amateur Astronomer or, as I am, a keen Landscape Astrophotographer, this app is a godsend. It provides a wealth of information and customisation that will help you find the darkest, clearest skies, wherever you are in the world.
The forecasts are accurate and the app is easy to use.
Support from the developer is excellent too so it is difficult to find anything wrong with it.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.
