Frozen since update

What happened??? This used to be a great little app but since the update, it’s just been completely frozen. I can open the app but that’s about it. When I tap on anything (chats, profile etc) nothing happens. I REALLY need to contact someone on this app asap but it won’t let me do anything 🤷🏼‍♀️

security is good, app is not so stable

i have been trying to access a very active group chat and every time i open the app i get more messages loading in, but can’t actually enter the chat. works fine if it does open, but as for now can’t access anything.

Storage management broken

I like the app but the storage management is broken. I’ve deleted all messages and media but the app still used a 4.64GB of storage for data. Please fix this.

Some suggestions

Absolutely love this app, using for years now. After latest update, time next to read icon is not when the message was read, but when it was sent, would be great to get it back as it was, so it’s clear when recipient actually saw message. The other thing is, would be good to have more options on reacting to message or media, not only “like” or “dislike”. Adding some emojis would do a big difference. Overall 10/10.

For the feeble

Threema is an unbearably poor messenger service that merely survives on the back of the reputation of its E2E quality and open source backend, but the truth is none of this matters if the actual app services are so incredibly poor. The servers are slow and lack capacity, and the encryption is not even close to what others can do, meaning a voice call will always require peak connection of both devices, meaning the app will probably only send 2 out of the 5 photos you want to send first try and also forget the caption, meaning don’t even think about a video call. Furthermore, the owners can probably not remember the last time they’ve invested in app features, meaning the app will not be remotely close to the messaging features (polling, questions, reactions, sharing locations, interactions with other apps) of competitor apps. Meaning the app will have issues with your Bluetooth devices and cause other synchronisation issues. Meaning it’s a sad excuse of a WhatsApp competitor and I could have gotten half a coffee for my money.

Great app - not great for iPhones

I love the encryption settings on Threema which is the main reason I've been using it alongside WhatsApp (difficult to get around) for years. But also for years it's not running well on my iPhones or those around me - it crashes and freezers frequently and stutters along quite often. It also doesn't allow for group video call on iPhones which is a shame. Hopefully and given the number of iPhone users out there this can be improved over time.

Features

Not bad but still lacks what are these days basic functions. Please add the ability to make admins on groups, and timed messages on chats! Features which both Signal and WhatsApp have and make total sense. Also more reactions than thumbs up and down for individual messages would be a nice to have. Keep up the great work!

Freezes on private chat

I like threema a lot and would give probably 5 stars but can’t as on private chat freezes then need to be completely restarted app. PLEASE FIX IT

Was amazing now crashes almost ever other sentence.

Even on a new phone I find the app slow to open eg takes 8 to 13 seconds to pop up with Face ID check on iPhone 15 Pro. Find the app crashes almost ever other sentence. Never used to be this bad. Tried remove old history and tried fresh install but no difference

Excellent App

Threema is concerned with one thing, and one thing only - privacy. To this end, Threema is, imo, the most secure messenger app out there.

Nothing in life is free which is why I like paying for my privacy and security. Great app, keep up the good work.

Nothing worth buying

Whilst this secure messenger does what it says to a degree there are other applications that do it for free. I’ve had most video connections not connecting and saying trying to connect when both phones have got full signal. This I know for a fact, as I have trialled them side-by-side and can see what is on the display in both instances. I certainly don’t think this company yet has the sufficient infrastructure for video calling compared to the likes of Facebook et cetera hence bad quality calls even when they are connected at best. The other slightly annoying thing is, you cannot customise one or two of the notification sounds you end up with the default one which is horrible and for a paid app this shouldn’t be the case.

Pretty good

Ive been using threema for years now. Security wise its good. But i still think it lacks features.

1- id like there to be sending/delivered/read notifications on group chat messages.

2- the same thing many people have requested for yeaaars! Is auto deleting messages.

Yes, but its still a good feature to have, and has been requested countless times. And its not just about security. It saves memory, time and hassle. Ive had chats that end up lagging a LOT and i have to empty the chat, but it can take a good 10-15 mins to empty and i cant do anything else until its done. Just add the auto deleting feature and add a disclaimer.

I suspect theres another reason why they wont add it and wont say what it is.

atrocious ecosystem

wanted to switch over from Signal and purchased this app based on good reviews. whilst the ios app is somewhat working, the desktop versions of win/macos are absolute abysmal. the app logs you out every time your desktop goes to sleep/laptop changes location, forcing you to go over an entire logging in process, and reconnecting, and waiting, and loading...

dude!!! who's works like that?! q-anon agents?! ...

and often there is no indication on the session logout. so you write a message just to find out that you're logged out right after you pressed submit - and guess what, your message is gone!

if you just need some ios messager app for sending "secret links that reveal pizzagate truths" that is for you - the security here is a total overkill and you won't get "caught"...

if you care about having a seamless messaging ecosystem, reliability, speed and productivity than Threema isn't for you.

Best Secure App

This App is very secure and does what it says on the tin: deliver your messages securely. Friends have messaged chat and video from China, where not all apps work. It is so secure that you can lose your own messages unless you back them up yourself: the App explains how to do this. Also great is that you do not need a linked phone number: friends without smart phones message me from iPod touch, iPad etc.

I recommend this App to everyone and some are taking it up: for me the App is becoming more useful all the time. Thanks to the developers and well worth the modest one-off fee.

Not end-2-end encryption?

I’m very unclear whether Threema is any more secure than my iPhone’s messaging. Threema say it is PFS encrypted but I believe it’s only e2e.

I hope someone at Threema can prove otherwise but until then, it’s off my phone.

Solid App

The app rarely crashes. The support team do answer messages after a day or so if you need help. Very occasionally a new release will show up a bug that resolves with shutting down the app, but these are dealt with in new releases. The features feel robust and the app typically gets strong scores on review sites for the design of its encryption.

Sometimes the app will take a while to make a secure connection if you have dodgy signal. In more recent versions that has improved. However it does have a clear indicator to show its progress (or lack thereof) and you have the reassurance of knowing it’s not lying to you for the sake of finesse.

You can only get a copy of your chat history by downloading as a secure zip file, which is then emailed to you. This function does work, and works well, though it feels a little unwieldy.

Threema is not the most popular secure messaging app. Fewer people you know are likely to be using it. Make your own decisions as to whether that is a bonus or a detraction. If you want a more popular secure messaging app then I suggest looking at Signal or Telegram. Last time I looked Signal’s encryption and security was roughly equivalent to Threema but Telegram’s was slightly less robust. This may have changed.

Over three years or so the app has always under promised and over delivered on what it advertises. I recommend it.

Better than Telegram, not as reassuring as Signal

I used to be a big fan of Telegram. I used it for weeks. Then I decided to dig a little deeper and check their encryption further. Telegram is flawed and their encryption model is weak. Google it for further details.

Anyway, I highly recommend Signal for the most secure messaging system available that's also open source, something Threema is not.

Other than that, Threema I believe has the same level of encryption as Signal and is a much better user friendly app and that's why I chose it over Signal.

If Threema was open source it would be perfect, but I can understand why it's not. I note that they have been independently verified by third parties as to their encryption methods and received top marks. But who's to say these third parties haven't been paid off by Threema?

But anyway, I think Threema is secure enough for my needs and I will continue to use it! Unless of course any evidence comes to light why I should not.

Good app but lacks high encryption

Overall this app is really good and I love that you can only be identified by a number or username. No links to your number or contacts. Good verification system for contacts. Clear privacy policy on their website and the server being based in Switzerland means NSA and British Intelligence cannot spy on you or ask the swiz server company to handover information.

There are a few things that will improve this app. Better encryption that is doubled in bit as its not as secure as Wickr. Confirmation if your IP location can or cannot be found using this app. Added Security to include a key to unscramble messages as optional two-layer security encryption (which is re-set every month).

Looking Good!

Only just started using this app but it seems perfect for discreet chats with people you might not want appearing in your regular msg apps. Passcode to open and ability to select specific contacts sold it to me. Game on!

A great app!

Ive been using it since 2 weeks now and love it. The only downside: video length is limited to 60 seconds and doesnt support cropping the video within the app

And a preview of pictures before sending is not possible. Can only see them very little in my photo album when i select them and then have to go straight to "send" without being able to see them in a preview to double check its the correct picture i have selected. These would be my suggestions regarding app improvement. Thats why im only giving 4 stars.

Other than that a great app and its very reassuring to know that my precious photos/ videos of my children are staying private between the recipient and myself.

int SMS and calls are all lies

I have bought this months and months ago and have tried getting a SMS or a call to link my UK mobile phone number , but I still don’t have it linked. SMS texts simply don’t arrive to my UK T-Mobile number and the call backs it says work but they never actually call and then it says it has done a call within the last 7 days , and then starts the same cycle again.

Sounds to me like they are running a rip-off scheme. Has the SMS linking or call back actually worked for anybody outside of Switzerland?

I found this when looking for alternatives to WhatsApp. It just has all the features I want and is very secure compared to some of the more open messaging apps such as WhatsApp for example. I wish I had discovered this app earlier. The creators done an amazing job with this app.

Good, secure

With security in mind, it's not designed to be an all singing all dancing messaging App but it ain't bad.

It's probably one of the only secure IM clients there is with end-to-end encryption. That doesn't use NSA backdoor'ed random number generator.

If you have both a phone number and email for a Contact and add then you get 2* security. All fully encrypted but to get 3* all green you need to swap QR codes.

I did so via FaceTime on my iPad with my friend.

Threema has had a basic vetting by Steve Gibson at GRC / Security Now! And he gave it the thumbs up.

You probably done need this App if it's just to text ur Mom about the lack of OJ in the fridge, but you DO need this app if you want to text your Dr, Lawyer or send ur Dad your bank account details (so he can send you the money for said orange juice).

Go to Threema's website and read it, before you buy. They have a comprehensive security outline.

Unlike other messengers, this one takes privacy serious. The Servers are located in Switzerland, which has one of the strongest data protection laws in the world, and your data is encrypted at all times. And the most important thing: The company behind it doesn't hold a master key to decrypt you messages like the US companies do.

Fast, clean interface

Good app, only criticism is it's more expensive than whatsapp which makes it a tough sell to friends. Otherwise good :)
