Description

Researchers at Monash University have developed the low FODMAP diet and a corresponding app to assist in the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Monash University FODMAP diet works by swapping foods high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), with low FODMAP alternatives. Around 75% of people with IBS experience symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.
The app comes directly from the research team at Monash and includes the following:
- General information about the FODMAP diet and IBS.
- Easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the app and the 3-Step FODMAP diet.
- A Food Guide detailing the FODMAP content for hundreds of foods using a simple 'traffic light system'.
- A list of branded products that have been certified by Monash as low FODMAP.
- A collection of over 70 nutritious, low FODMAP recipes.
- Functions that allow you to create your own shopping list and add notes to individual foods
- A Diary that enables you to record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels. The Diary will also guide you through step 2 of the diet - FODMAP reintroduction.
- The ability to adjust units of measurement (metric or imperial) and activate colour blindness assistance.

Version 3.0.1
Just a few hours ago I wrote a nice review about this app. But I have to change that because I cannot change any of the entries into the diary because the pencil icon is not large enough for human finger to touch. Why does an app that has links on it that you’re meant to touch on a touch screen but the hot area of the touchable area that will actually open that link is physically smaller than the width of the finger that touches the screen. This app is meant to make people stress less and manage their diet but instead it’s starting to piss me off more.

This app has changed my life!

And the low FODMAP diet itself. Thanks to Monash University my IBS symptoms are now at bay making my life so much better. The app is incredibly helpful and I use it everyday to determine what I can eat on the low FODMAP diet. I still want to have a varied diet and quantities of food can vary to turn them from low to high FODMAP. This is where the app is very helpful, especially the new update. I love the traffic light system and how you can easily see the different quantities at a glance.

Fantastic app - latest update is amazing!

Version 3.0.1
I’d previously downloaded some free Fodmap apps, but wish I’d just bought this one straight away - it’s so much better and well worth the money!
The latest update has made it even better - there’s a really helpful guide to the FODMAP diet, the traffic light system is great (and is broken down into 6 different types of FODMAP when you click into the food).
The food/symptoms diary is really easy to use and the Reintroduction part of the diary comes preloaded with types of food to reintroduce for each FODMAP group and suggested amounts to eat for each Reintroduction day, which makes everything SO much easier!
The filters are great if you want to filter out particular types of FODMAPS, which will be great once in Stage 3 of the diet (Personalisation). All in all it’s a brilliant app, and the money goes towards more research into FODMAPs - win win! 😄

I have been following a low-FODMAP diet for years and this app has always been my holy grail. I am so so so happy for this update, it was looong overdue.
The app is so easy to use now, everything is logical and user friendly. The new recipes are really great and easy to make, and the food guide has a new look which makes viewing recommended portion sizes so much easier! I really like the new option of seeing newly tested products together under one tab as well.
Thanks for the great update and all the testings/hard work done to help us, IBS sufferers!

Having been on a low fodmap diet for several years under guidance by my dietician, this is the only app I trust. No, you can’t scan pre packaged foods but it gives you the safe portion sizes where appropriate and you can see at a glance which foods can be eaten more freely. Some foods are high fodmap but when you click on the item for further info some of them are tolerable in small doses so you can add to soups etc. The price is worth it and goes towards helping support further testing of foods which benefits all of us who need to download the app in the first place.

Version 2.0.9
This is my first review of any App. The App enables me to understand the scientific background well. However, I find that it would be more useful if the app could update my input e.g. shopping list from one device to another. I spent a long time reviewing the recipes , then making a shopping list on my iPad, thinking it would update automatically on my iPhone and only then realising that was not the case. Other Apps have this facility. Frustratingly I also found that when I scroll down the recipes to find “other” to input my own recipe it wasn’t there...I couldn’t find it. I need to be able to do this so that I can accurately chart my food intake and be able to see the chart results at the end of each week and report to my dietician. it would be very useful in any future development of the App, to have a barcode reader for items bought so I could check the food product with the low FODMAP diet. This is available on another similar App. It is fair to say the traffic light system is easy to follow on the various food categories. Finally from my personal experience ...It would have been so useful if there had been some contact information to assist me in the use of the App.

Incredibly helpful to check what you can and can’t eat and in what quantities. I would be lost without it! Most expensive app I have brought but is well worth the money. Only slight issue is that it would be helpful if it said what the maximum allowance for all food are so it says 1tbsp of sugar is ok but then doesn’t comment what your maximum should be, which is annoying

This app has been invaluable in following this diet.
I would have been totally lost without it. This despite the fact that I am a qualified dietitian myself, though trained before FODMAPS even heard of.
Would like to see a more flexible diary and more easily understandable. For example would like the option to add notes. However I do understand the reasoning behind the approach taken.
Unfortunately I am unable to make much use of the recipes as I have to eat a very low carb diet because of having reactive hypoglycaemia.
Thank you Monash.

There are filters fir colour blindness. All very good.

If you live in the UK. I’m sure it is a great app with a lot of careful work involved in its development but this is a quite typical problem with the App Store. I regret spending the 7.99 and there should be a refund option as you do not find this out until you purchase it.

I don’t do reviews but seeing the poor review from someone saying they wanted more for £7.99 made me laugh. Some people expect everything for nothing. £7.99 doesn’t get you many doughnuts at Krispy Kreme's. Frankly I would forgo ten times that many doughnuts for this research/app which has obviously taken a huge amount of work. My only suggestion is I found it hard to find the food lists. It took a while to realise these don’t show up (just food products instead) until you set your filters. Very well done to everyone involved. Hugely appreciated !
PS annoyingly I hit the one two and then three stars to rate this before I realised you only hit the fifth one to give five stars. Feel really bad about that and I suspect it happens a lot for novice reviewers. So i advise to ignore all the lower ratings 😉

Version 2.0.8
Having had this ap for 2+ years, as at November 2017 I am finding this useful. I am now looking more closely at using settings and filters. BUT I feel there are not enough UK foods in the list, and especially easily available foods. When I turned it on the UK only, with my intolerance filters (can you use both those at once) I didn’t have much luck with finding things. The Information is pretty American-biassed, unless I have made a mistake using the filters. I know bell peppers means green and red peppers, I have forgotten what zuccini is. Looking for bread I could eat - there is one if I went to Germany! Then I found gluten-free bread, which can be bought in the UK. I would like more information about where things can be bought in the UK, apart from common foods which can be bought in supermarkets. Would be good to be able to buy things on line. Living on my own, difficult to get the SMALL portions listed, without wasting a lot of food. Nevertheless, I’ve found it very useful to come back to this ap, as my symptoms have worsened. I think I now also have some problems with fibre as well as many fodmaps. I think everyone individual is different re what foods they tolerate. My severe IBS was late-onset. Had it much more mildly when young. I don’t regret getting this ap, and recommend it highly, despite the fact that further improvements could be made. If only someone would produce a range of low fodmap ready meals and market them in the UK!

Version 2.0.5
For £7.99 it is reasonable to expect decent functionality, this app is very disappointing. Although the traffic light system for foods is generally good there is sometimes a lack of explanation when standard sentences are merely included. Some of the recipes given include high FODMOP ingredients with no explanation which leads to confusion, and finally, the most frustrating thing is the diary which gives set recipes for meals in the first week and will not allow you to record actual foods eaten nor symptoms thereby rendering it absolutely useless. Would recommend only for the food lists but it is very expensive for that feature alone. Come on Monash, please do better then this.

I am not particularly happy with paying nearly £6 for this app, the two foods I wasn't sure about aren't even listed in the foods you can check (liquorice being one of them) and the less I say about the recipes the better. How is a cheese sandwich or steak and chips a recipe?! As an epp Monash have done a great job to further the research in the whole area of FODMAPS. However, the applicaiton lacks any real world relevancne as scientific reseaerch and customer experience are too different things. The app is very crowded in terms of information being provided and Monash seem to be more interested in selling certifications now to manufacturers. The app is lost with so much information and a really good reference tool but you know what on Google it is free to access the same information. In the UK it requires too much interpretation and not really helpful when cooking for a family of 4 when i need some really easy options.

Version 2.0.1
I've been reading about the FODMAP diet for a long time and never seemed to be able to find a simple, conclusive list of foods to avoid. This app has solved that problem! I'm not on the diet yet but I've been using the app just to observe and confirm my suspicions when I have symptoms.
It's really well made and the extra features are very helpful. As for other reviewers comments on the foods listed - I eat a simple diet of mostly non processed foods and have had no problems so far. You're not going to find a specific brand of frozen lasagne or anything like that. The UK food list is for unusual items unique to the UK, so it's very small, however we get almost everything on the main list in the UK anyway.
I've only given 4 stars as I'd love to see more recipes added, especially vegetarian ones.

2016-11-04
Version 2.0.1
If you're using a low FODMAP diet to alleviate IBS symptoms this app will be invaluable to you. It's a comprehensive guide to what you can and can't eat, which is great - really useful if you're in the supermarket or in a restaurant. But it's so much more than that. It covers in a concise way much of the info that's in the associated book and it's been developed by Monash University, the research body responsible for developing this diet worldwide. So you know what you see here is the correct information, not an interpretation of it.
You can set a country filter, so if you're in the U.K. you'll only see products available in the U.K. If you travel to other countries you can change the filter so you see products from that specific country.
The app also includes a food diary.
At £5.99 it's expensive but for its functionality it's worth it. And if the profits go back into further FODMAP research at Monash I think it's money well spent.

Version 2.0.1
This app has been paramount in helping me to overcome IBS related problems. I purchased the app after finding the LOW FODMAP diet recommended by a dietitian left me with conflicting online information. This has safe portions of the foods I can eat and tells me how much after reintroduction I can eat (if at all) of the high FODMAP foods. All of the money from it goes straight back to Monash and they use it for further testing. In the year that I've had it I've used it every single day and had updates every few weeks with more foods being added to the vast database that already exists! If you were to ask me now, I'd pay £20 for it! It really has been that much of a godsend! Thank you Monash! You made this girl so happy when nothing else could 💞

Version 2.0.1
This is the best app for those following the Fodmap diet. Monash University invented the diet so you know it is accurate. It doesn't have many processed foods, because it is an International app, and recipes vary worldwide, and are always changing. But it has the ingredients, you just have to look them up. It does take a while at first, but you soon get used to it. It also gives safe portion sizes, which most other apps don't. It also DOES work offline, it has a setting for that. Finally, the cost goes back to the University to research more foods for future free updates.

Best FODMAP app, in my opinion

Aplord
 –
2016-08-14
Version 2.0.1
For me, in the UK, this is by far the most useful FODMAP app. I recommend it unreservedly.
The Monash research team provide a great deal of relevant information about each type of food, not just "ok" or "not ok". That's because dietary sufferers like us might be triggered by one or more of four different things: Oligos, Polyols, Fructose and/or Lactose. By understanding the levels of each of these in what you eat, you can over time figure out which of the four types of FODMAP are triggers for you.
Some foods in the database are irrelevant to me in the UK, I guess they are items sold in Australia. But the database has most of the key things in it (various fruits, pulses, cereals, vegetables, and so on). So with a bit of browsing through the database, you are then armed with enough knowledge most of the time to read the labels on what you buy and be pretty confident about the FODMAPs in it.
So whenever I shop for food, and whenever I visit a restaurant, this FODMAP app is with me, ready to advise.
The app costs a lot compared to anything else FODMAP-related in the App Store. I'm ok with that because (a) it has more information by far than any other app I have found, and that extra information has helped me hugely to get my guts under control, (b) it is produced by the most learned FODMAP medical researchers in the world and (c) all revenue from the app goes back into medical research into FODMAP.
So if you need to understand FODMAPs for your diet, I recommend this app for the database of basic foodstuffs alone (and hence whether you are in Australia, UK, Timbuktu or anywhere else). I've never even looked at the recipes or shopping list functionality, so I have no opinion on those.
Good luck, I hope this app helps your guts as much as it has helped mine.
