Description

The original and the best, accept no cheap imitations !
Record a bird singing and use Automatic Recognition to help identify it. Unlike all other apps, no internet or mobile connection is needed.
• The Times Newspaper said the app "Does what it says on the
tin" and were amazed that "this astonishing piece of software
costs about the same as a cup of coffee".
• "In direct comparison Bird Song Id showed better results than Chirpomatic". - naturschutz.ch - Swiss Birding Magazine
Copied by a few, bettered by none, Bird Song Id is three years
ahead of anyone else in this field !
• The Telegraph Newspaper said "Bird Song Id is a good walk improved, and may even put a spring in your step".
• over 1000 good ratings
Automatic Recognition takes place on the device, no connection to the internet or mobile network is needed.
Automatic Recognition needs good quality recordings to work. See the HELP below, or follow the Developer Website link to find out how to improve your recordings.
Automatic Recognition will help identify a good cross section of bird song in the British Isles, but you will need a good quality recording. Lots of blue and green peaks reaching to the top of the analysis graph is a good indication of a quality recording. Help and examples are included in the app to guide you.
How successful is it ? Our aim is to get the correct bird in the top three of those listed. In our testing of over 1,000 samples we found the success rate to be 85%.
Follow the Developer Website link to see a demo of Automatic Recognition on YouTube
--------------- HELP ----------------
Automatic Recognition needs a good quality recording of the bird.
-------------
Only record when a single bird is singing, or when a single bird is dominant
-------------
The analysis graph should have plenty of blue and green colors with few or no black peaks.
-------------
The peaks on the graph should reach all the way to the top. Low peaks indicate poor quality and recognition is unlikely.
-------------
The Audio Quality, shown at the top of the results screen, should be at least Good, and preferably Very Good or Excellent
-------------
The highest score should be above 70% to be useful. Below this and the system is telling you it is not sure what the song is.
-------------
A difference between two birds of less than 10% is not that significant, so listen to the samples from both to help you further
-------------
See the samples for how the analysis graph should look (to see the samples press the sample button at the top right of the help page)
-------------
Make sure it is very quiet apart from the bird song which should be nice and loud
-------------
Be as close to the bird as you can be without disturbing it
-------------
Be patient, dont expect miracles, the system works but needs good clear recordings
-------------
The microphone is at the bottom of an iPhone, point the bottom of the phone towards the bird
-------------
Remove the case from your iPhone if you use one as this can dampen the microphone
-------------
Record a single bird at a time
-------------
Capture at least two singing episodes if you can.
-------------
Record for the full 30 seconds
-------------
Avoid windy conditions. Air moving over the microphone will mask the bird sounds
-------------
Make sure there is plenty of life in the battery. Your device will reduce power going to the microphone as the battery runs down
-------------
Playing songs to the app from recorded material on the internet, other apps or CDs is unlikely to work as this material is digitally processed and edited (inter phase gaps are often shortened). They sound very different to recording birds for real on an iPhone or iPad in the natural environment. Its a bit like putting rocket fuel in a lawn mower.
-------------

Useless on an iPhone

If you were expecting to identify an unseen bird vocalising close by, on an iPhone, forget it! Time and time again it produces ridiculous matches.
If you have a fair idea of what the bird is, it’s a useful reference tool, but there are better and cheaper alternatives.
A waste of money.

Less is not more, poor app.

Not enough bird calls on this app, many British Birds missing.
Get a different app.

Not fit for purpose

I think the birds would need to be trained to stand in front of a microphone in a professional recording studio and have a few training sessions to make it on to a short list of three possibilities.
Rubbishy rubbish

Very Poor

Very disappointed with this. Very rarely seems to identify birds correctly. I recently tried this app whilst very close to a Cuckoo which was very clear with no other bird song evident and got a ridiculous range of birds (the top match came up as a Wren ! Don’t bother with this app.

Disappointed

Very limited number of birds and information way out of date, for example the distribution of the red kite. Likes to call all marshland song as Mallard when there were none in sight!

Hopeless

Every recording I make returns the same list of results. The top hit every time is a ring necked parakeet. I live in the Wiltshire countryside. I can’t think of many birds that I’m less likely to see. Unless I’m doing something wrong I wouldn’t waste your money.

Only once has this worked

I frequently stop to record a clear bird song and it has only once ID’d the bird. It normally comes up with a huge list of birds that sound nothing like the call I can hear. Needs to improve its artificial intelligence

Poor

I’ve not been able to get a proper identification out of this app yet. It seems to like ring necked parakeets for some reason which makes this very unreliable. I’ve only been using it for a week or so and I will persevere with for a while longer and then assess it again. I’m not expecting much improvement though! Don’t waste you money on this one.

Birdsong ID

It’s all very well updating this App, but I have IS12, and my IPhone 5 won’t stretch to 13, so I have lost the app I paid for. I am not happy!

Garbage.

So vague where this apps answers that I tested it on a very loud and obvious magpie. It didn’t identify it once.

Is it even a bird?

The closest this app has come to identifying what a recording has in common with a bird is anything that has feathers. Hopeless and frustrating.

Helps to identify birds when I’m out dog walking

I had the old version and it was so much better. Maybe I’m using this one incorrectly but the old one had a great identifier function whereby you could choose various features of the song you heard eg high pitch, melodious and the app would give you suggestions as to what it could be. This version just gives you a frustrating quiz with no information as to what song might sound like. Also when you do a recording it gives suggestions but you can’t listen to the song/call without a great deal of trial and error and faffing. I am thinking of getting a different app 😕

Doesn’t work

I agree with a previous review, I doubt all these 5* reviews. Clear audio of a distinctive bird song and the app is giving be a long list of birds it could be that sound absolutely nothing like it... usually the same list of birds every time... minimal narrowing down. The instructions for getting a good enough audio sample for the app are nigh on impossible, getting that close to the bird and only having 1 bird singing at once for a full 30s sample... pretty gutted I paid anything for this. Waste of money.

Not convinced

I have tried this a lot in my garden and it does pick up what you would expect to be hearing but also some that are just implausible - we are in Surrey yet it frequently suggests coastal wading birds. Also, when I have found myself under a tree trying to identify something I don’t recognise, it just gives the same list and I’m sure everything isn’t a blackbird...

Miss disappointed

This just doesnt work! The results it provides after each recording is just a list of all the birds with varying percentages. Its like saying today will be sunny, windy rainy and snow and that way they are not wrong!

2020-06-24

Useless

I personally have found this app a waste of money and would request a refund if possible! I wanted to know if a bird I could see was a swallow, swift or house Martin.... it was the only bird singing at this time..... the app said ring necked parakeet and none of the above were mentioned!!!!! I have better things to do with my time .... high expectations.... low performance

Great.

Bloody good for identification. Only criticism is that the noise you are recording must be prominent as it struggles to define one song amongst others. Otherwise very good.

Doesn’t work

I have apple se. I’ve downloaded twice. Makes recordings and I’ve followed guidance. Thinks all birds are collared doves or parakeet or some other nonsense when clearly they were skylarks or chaffinch or blackbird. Very disappointed. It deserves no stars. Not possible. Going to delete.

NEW UPDATE BROKEN THINGS

I always loved this app and use it all the time to both remind me of what birdsong is supposed to sound like and compare - but also to record birdsong in the garden. Since the new update the recordings aren't saving - or if they are, the app crashes when I try to open them. I also can't work out how to search for a bird anymore. I have an iPhone XS max. I would love for these problems to be fixed soon!

Can’t believe it took so long to update the UI

The UI on this app has always been the worst I’ve ever seen! So I’m glad they have finally updated it. It’s still not that great but it’s a vast improvement on what it was before.

2020-05-13

Not as hoped

Star rating indicated that it would be really useful. However, I will be giving up with it. I have made recording on the system with little success. Good recordings have been considered very poor; recognition has been way off, not one birdsong has been properly identified and so have lost confidence in it.

Auto recognition needs improvement.

My biggest quibble is that auto recognition is limited. This function was why I bought the app. Too few birds in the library of possibles. Also high probability given for birds that I know for certain are not anywhere near e.g. nightingale
24Cardwell
2020-05-08

Waste of money

Thought it would let me save the recordings. Either you can’t or it’s so user unfriendly I can’t work out how to do it. And I’m pretty tech savvy. Really frustrating app, I’ll go back to the free one I was using. Much easier.

Don’t bother

It is very hit and miss. Mostly miss. Doesn’t recognise birds that are singing persistently that I can actually see and identify. Although it sometimes works it’s unreliable and untrustworthy.

2019-06-09

Very Disappointing

I would seriously question the veracity of the 4 & 5 star reviews.
This App never fails to disappoint. I find it almost impossible to get 30 seconds of good quality recording, which is what is needed to get accurate results. It is also very slow to process the recordings and give results. Since my first review, I have upgraded to an iPhone XS with better processing power. The App still fails to identify very common garden birds. I feel totally let down - a waste of time and money.

0 stars - how do I get a refund. Unable to recognise sing. Shameful

Don’t waste your money. This is a waste on money as a novice in my opinion. Very limited number of birds AND also the % recognition means once does not know difference between similar bird songs. Twice for common warblers bird could not be identified

I thought this app would be a good addition to the other apps I have but have been really disappointed so far it hasn’t identified one bird correctly.

Learning each time I use this App

I have always wanted to know what bird makes which call - this App is teaching me with each use - I make a recording then listen to each birdsong. I am really enjoying the process - have recommended to several friends who are now all using it in their gardens
Artjo1967
2019-02-04

Disappointing

If this was offered on free trial I am sure no one would then pay. I just wanted to identify birds I can hear while dog walking.
Badly designed as getting to the record button is faffy. Recordings have to be of just one bird, close up, with no background noises. Every time I have tried to identify birds it says it’s a low quality recording, even when the bing song is loud.
Very disappointed
Libre app now crap
2018-09-14

Rubbish

I work on a nature reserve and know most of my calls. Thought I would download this app as a teaching aid for some of our visitors. But thought I’d try it out first. I stood nearby a wren singing, a very easy call to id for the novice, the app came back with a 43% chance wren, 43% ring-necked parakeet! I mean WT.... they sound nothing like each other. This app needs a lot of work and is quite poor considering some of the apps out there like Merlin Bird ID, which is able perfectly from really bad photos, yet this app cannot id the simplest of calls. £4 wasted.
SuffolkNaturalist
2018-06-03

Never works!

Good library of bird song but the identifier part is rubbish. I don’t know how close you would have to be to the flippin’ bird for the app to consider the recording good quality!! I’ve been beside the tree the bird is in and when you play it back you can hear it clearly and it still says “very poor quality”. And recommends the most obscure birds that sound nothing like the recording, e.g I recorded a wren and it said it was most likely a wood pigeon??
WindRustle65
2018-05-01

Waste of money

Only 36 songs in the database, it doesn’t recognise anything.
Tried numerous times, either comes up with “poor audio recording” or gives a list of totally irrelevant birds to match.
Even tried a pied wagtail song from another app, came up with a list with all the same birds as before.
Can I have my money back?

2018-04-21

Not impressed

Having been using it this morning with great anticipation it has yet to identify any bird with anything convincing and it’s making crazy suggestions only. In my garden they ranged from a parakeet to a woodpecker blackbird and curlew !!! Wishing I hadn’t bought it now and unless it starts to improve it has been a waste of money. The interface also seems very amateurish. Very Disappointing ☹️

Bird song id

A great app that I have had for a while and has turned out to be very useful. Used this app many times and it helps remind me whenever I forget a sound.

2017-08-06

Poor

Have had this app a few years now. Tried it on many occasions and been disappointed. This morning, definitely one bird song (loud), no extraneous noise, and it came up with a scattergram of possible birds ranging from sparrows, to jackdaws, to lapwings, to nightjars. None of the songs were anywhere near. Time to delete it. Phenomenal idea, I'm sure it will improve with time.

It makes me smile all over

I haven't been into the countryside since I bought this app a few days ago. However, my elderly mother, my husband and myself, all enjoy listening to the songs after lunch. I play a few and they try to guess what they are. I'm sure this will get lots of play

Beginning to be a useful tool

I am learning my way round this app and finding out all sorts of things about the birds around me. Nice selection of calls AND song. Some other apps too limited in what they present as the sound of a bird. Thanks.

Didn't work for me

While there are a lot of recordings and information to research in the App, I'm afraid trying to isolate a single birdsong and get an identification is all but impossible. And none of my recordings were saved. I've unloaded it.

2017-04-17

Great for novices

An excellent aid to bird song recognition even for novices like me. Even if there are other sounds like planes, traffic, heavy rain, other birds, the app will present the right one on a short list, and you can play a good recording to check. My only regret is lack of updates. I Iook forward to additions such as red kite.
Wargrave Mike
2017-03-22

Excellent app, good recordings

I have no hesitation in recommending this app, it is probably the best one out there, with a very good collection of common bird sounds.
The only reason for four stars, not five, is that some cosmetic work on the interface is needed and some of the birds need regrouping to make things more logical.

2017-01-28

Could be so much better

Really wanted this to be helpful. What there is is very good but so many species need to be added to take it to a helpful level. Limited warbler, lark, bunting etc etc. So basic at the moment but can't help feel that the intention is there but more input of species is really needed. Come on guys this could be right up there with the format you have and not just a basic insight as it is now.

My three pre schoolers absolutely love this app, nice and simple to use. More information about each bird would be good and perhaps a few more birds, but good app.

Has never worked for me

I've tried to use this in lots of different places but even in the depths of the countryside it tells me that it can't recognise the song. Someone needs to tell the birds to keep singing for at least 30 seconds! How on earth do people get a good 30 second recording to enable the app to work? I find that birds don't keep singing uninterrupted for that long.

Great app

I like the app as a lot of thought and hard work has gone into it. It's not shazzam for birds - well not completely - because around here the birds don't take it in turns to sing. Very rude of them. As a result I get birds suggested that I'm pretty sure are not in my area - eg parakeets. Other than that it's great fun and has taught me a lot about bird songs and calls.

2016-05-22

Disappointing

First I have to agree with one of the previous reviews that the App isn't user friendly. Have used this App daily for approx a week, both in my garden with no other houses nearby only fields of crops and country lanes, I can see a Robin, Chaffinches, Blackbirds in my garden the App with the 84% hit told me there was a Wood Pigeon, there wasn't, not a good start! Today 21st May I walked a different farm lane bordered by hedgerows and the only bird I personally could detect was a Skylark, very close as fields on either side of lane, I tried the App which declared there weren't any birds. I am going to delete it.

Good app

How many times have you heard birds chirruping and tried to fit their sounds with written versions in a bird book "a-little-bit-of-bread-and-no-cheeeese"? To me they could all fit into the same words. But this app really does magically identify the chirps and squawks you can hear coming out of the bush - even better than trying to learn a varied song from a short recording. It enhances the enjoyment of the countryside no end!

Brilliant little app

I live where there are lots of birds. I'm pretty bad at identifying birds by sight and even worse when it comes to their call. Last year I recorded female owls calling to each other in a thunderstorm. No I didn't know what they were but was able to identify them after an online search. Then I thought, someone should make an app that does that. And they have and I love it!

Absolutely great app!

App runs very smooth and is amazing for the price!
Every bird I tried came up correct. I would recommend this app to anyone who enjoys birds or even just wants to know what a bird sounds like.
Absolutely great developer and I would buy everything from them!

So much fun for a beginner

This app is easy to use and for a complete beginner is fantastic to help you recognise the birds around you. I have an excellent book but with no knowledge of birds I don't know where to start with identification. Now I can record the bird's song and use it to help me know which bird to look up.
I use this app every morning during the dawn chorus and I'm learning my birds fast. Thank you!

Very useful

Great when out in the field and you need a confirmation of the bird seen - especially the LBJs. Been using for about three years now and have been impressed with the accuracy. Whilst not perfect it's the best I've found. Hopefully with user support, the app will continue to go from strength to strength.

Not very good

Tried it 15ft away from a very loud Song Thrush and automatic mode failed to recognise it. It also failed to recognise a very loud Wren. Both these birds were singing in total isolation with no competing ambient noise and they were close by. Waste of money and I would like a refund
Also tried it on a Garden Warbler that was less than 10ft away and it failed to recognise that.

Works every time!

I never cease to be amazed by BirdsongID. Even in our local wildlife sanctuary (Stanwick Lakes) where so many different birds exist BirdsongID seems to sort out which of the many songs in the background I'm searching for. Although it gives you three possible answers (along with a probability rating) its first choice has been correct every time so far!
This is the cleverest and most useful app I have!

Birding Tours(Jersey)

Highly recommend this App especially this time of year as Spring brings bird song, pairing, nesting, raising young, fledging.
Excellent for BTO Bird Breeding Surveyors to pin down what you hear but may not see.

Be patient!

This app takes some patience, but, keep at it and eventually identification gets easier. It certainly is the most comprehensive bird id app I have found and I will look forward to using it for some time to come!

Tricky

I re installed this to see if it had improved than a couple of years ago and as far as I can see it is exactly the same, nothing has changed! I'm trying to identify a night signing bird, the app is so tricky to use, I keep "losing" the record button so I have to turn it off & on again, it never identifies the bird, it's very frustrating. HAVE there been any improvements or upgrades?

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

This app is great. No time waiting to connect to site to retrieve bird sound or info. Easy to use very intuitive. Well worth the initial fee. A proper bird lovers tool.

Birdsongs are here!

This app has proven really useful in helping us identify a lot of birds we didn't previously know. Great value for the relatively small fee paid, would recommend.

Very good

As with other reviews here I find the app very useful as I live on a boat and hear birdsong everywhere I travel, other background noise must be avoided though...

It's great

I was surprised just how well this worked. It hasn't failed me yet to correctly identify the bird song. If you can get even only a half decent recording then it lists the right one within the top couple of choices.

Bird Song App

This has proved to be very useful in identifying birds on one of the country parks I visit. Would recommend to anyone interested in birds and their song.
