The eCOS App helps law firms start working with their clients by assisting you in securely providing important information and verifying your identity.
Thousands of people use this ‘client onboarding’ service every week to get their legal matter underway more quickly and ensure that the law firm is complying with their regulated duties to know who their clients are.
Typically, the eCOS Legal Client Onboarding App will assist you to complete detailed legal forms, perform a biometric identity check, and enable you to provide relevant financial information relating to your legal matter.
When you download the App you will see the branding of your chosen legal services provider, this will match the logo on the email that you were sent by your legal adviser to begin the onboarding process. If you have any questions our dedicated eCOS support team or your lawyer will be able to assist you directly.
Any data that you provide using the App will be held securely and only used for the purpose of conducting the legal matter with your legal services provider.

Being Forced to Use an App for Legal
I have to say, the ECOS Legal app is incredibly frustrating when it comes to completing legal forms on a “mobile” device. The screens are tiny, and many of the questions and documents are huge. It’s almost impossible to read and fill out everything properly. For something as important as “legal” documents, this feels clunky and poorly designed. There something you don’t really need an app for and this is one of them!

Incomplete app, support unable to assist
I had a nuance in my application that I did not have to fill in a section of the forms, I queried this with support and they did not even understand why I was struggling and you can’t even download the chat transcript (even though there is a button - huge red flag) for the chat so I needed to take screenshots.

Dreadful
A desperately poor user interface. The ID checking section is cumbersome, slow and difficult. The data gathering part tortuous and inflexible. Unsure how much confidence to have regarding personal data security. Ended up abandoning it and reverting to old fashioned paper and post.

Seems fixed
As of 9th December 2025 this app seems to be fixed and working perfectly. Completed the whole process in about 10 minutes. Camera and upload processes were all flawless.

It was unclear, complicated using legal lingo which made no sense to us mere mortals! I have bought and sold mms t houses/flats, but this was the worst. It stalled many times and didn’t allow me to continue Person/person much more preferable.

Seemed fine to me…
Was dreading using this app for sale & purchase solicitor onboarding having seen the reviews. As others have mentioned, the app kept telling me that my passport was too close/too far away when taking a photo, but there was a camera button to just take the picture whenever you wanted to when your passport is in the frame properly. I didn’t need to wait for the app to accept that my passport was in frame properly before taking the picture. No other problems and took hardly any time at all. Can only think in-app experience must vary significantly depending on who the solicitor is and how they have their forms set up

So frustrating
This app is awful. So frustrating. Taken over three hours to do what should be simple. Dealing with chat bots. Do these app developers not understand we have to work for a living and not waste hours pandering to the idiosyncrasies of what developers think is best for us. Unfortunately tied in with Visa through their acquisition of Tink so that will exacerbate things. Unfortunately use of this seems unavoidable now.

Absolutely infuriating
I had to use this awful app to verify my identity. I spent half an hour trying to get it to recognise my passport, to no avail. I tried a very wide range of angles, distances, positions, lighting etc. It always just oscillates between "too far" and "not in frame" (ie too close). I never got it to work, it's a completely useless app.

Quite possibly the worst App I’ve ever used
The UI is awful. It doesn’t give you opportunities to say why you don’t have a document and offer an alternative. I could go on but it’s not worth my time.

Time wasting
This app caused some weeks delay for my sale. I spent many hours in filling in the data, uploaded the data, received confirmation of receipt, received confirmation that the data had been sent to my solicitor and… that was the last ever heard.
The solicitor flatly denied receiving anything. Hours spent with eCos support achieved nothing. My time wasted.
Much else could be asked; where exactly does personal data go ? why is some normal computer power not brought to bear on the standard legal forms in avoiding repeated questions ? How about being able to edit forms ?
I had to complete the forms, again, on paper. What a terrible waste of time.
This app should be withdrawn.

My onboarding experience
I used this app to onboard for setfords and I must say this was easier than toasting bread. I highly recommend this to all solicitors to use. I can rest easy tonight knowing I am in safe hands!!!

The worst of all KYC Apps
It is the most intrusive of all KYC apps. Takes the longest to complete. Asks for information none of the others ask for like can we share information? (With who?). Some unacceptably ambiguous statements regarding security of the information supplied. I will never use it again.

It’s not that bad
I have just used this to confirm my identity on a property sale. Whilst it’s not a great it wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting based on the majority of reviews. A few frustrating moments but overall it’s adequate.

Poor design & doesn’t work
This is one of the worst ID check apps; getting it to actually focus on a passport or other IDs is impossible and it fails. Would avoid this until the developers improve the app. Save your time; it’s probably quicker to drive to the solicitors and back before this app actually works.

What am I paying a solicitor for?
What an appalling app. Clunky and definitely not user friendly. Information has to be repeated countless times. This would have taken me one and a half hours using a paper form, instead took me 3 times as long. In much need of an upgrade. This sort of app makes solicitors look incredibly lazy tbh. I’ve rarely encountered a platform so bad, and I was a civil servant for decades.

It asks you to photograph a QR code in order that you can photograph your passport, but the QR code just sends you back to the start again. You need to ring technical support to make it work

Useless
This is now the 2nd time I have been asked to use this app when engaging a new solicitor. When trying to upload passport followed by scanning the chip and taking a selfie, it variously fails at one of these stages (usually after taking the picture of the passport page). Instead of giving you an error message it just takes you back to the start. Unfit for purpose.

Somehow the app pasted a random link from Safari on my phone and now I am stuck looking at something I was looking at on IKEA rather than sorting out my onboarding. Useless and serious concerns around potential loopholes this app clearly has.

Frustrating, poor process
Assumes you are selling and even then asks for 12 months bank statements just because they don’t list my bank. If I am selling who cares how much money I have in my current account? Even as a buyer, why would I have all the money in my current account (earning zilch)? The app would not work in my secure browser (tried my default of DuckDuckGo) and in the end I had to install Chrome on my phone to get it to open. This should be an id verification only app and not try to do things that don’t correspond to the process. I can understand if law firms like it but its clumsy and intrusive for the client.

Started off online but webform froze so I was forced to continue using this app. Unclear instructions, bizarre unresponsive navigation, badly designed image capture, seriously shonky image validation and misleading questions. Apart from that it was fine.

Give me a human!
Useless app and inadequate support. Expected to switch from laptop to mobile repeatedly to complete tasks. Client terms doc for signature was too small to read, even on the laptop. Confusing mix of people, solicitor vs eCOS, so didn’t know who to contact. Then got a load of GDPR obfuscation when what I needed was the contact details for the solicitor. Useless. Humans are often better than rigid electronic systems!!

Time wasting
We lost a week using this app. What would have taken half an hour in direct contact with the solicitor took, by the time we’d familiarised ourselves with it, got the data together and then discovered we needed the sellers data, a week! It’s not the app’s fault, I guess. And beware the app doesn’t seem to accept Building Society accounts that have one bank account for all savers and assigns them individual 9 digit customer reference numbers.

If you’re reading this you probably have no choice but to use the app for a financial process, but just be warned it’s utterly hopeless. Allow lots of time and be prepared to repeat steps endlessly and be asked to do impossible things.

Awful
If your experience was anything like mine, you’ll be pulling your hair out from start to finish. The app doesn’t scan properly, so plan on spending 30 minutes to an hour to take a picture of your photo passport. At critical points the prompt is missing that should show you how to hold your passport, which makes it even more of a time wasting exercise. I use lawfirms frequently and other apps I’ve used such as Firstaml require only seconds of your time to complete successfully. Its hard to believe that any developer has actually released this.

Slow and frustrating
The app is no better than the website. Both take absolutely ages to load and ask the same question in multiple places. Genuinely I would prefer pen and paper, this has wasted so much of my time. Especially as I’m a joint buyer and we have both wasted time on this to provide the same information!

Quality onboarding portal
Found the portal to be very well made.
The system is simple and easy accessible. Really felt reassured by the security steps when uploading my details.
Would recommend this process to anyone looking to onboard through conveyancing

Time consuming and useless
Multiple attempts needed to upload documents. Had nearly completed when half the input vanished. Call to technical support resolved this after a non productive chat on line re the issue which just kept repeating you haven’t completed the forms. Now all is complete but solicitor cannot see some of them.

Not an easy app to work with
The app will not open on my iPad despite having IOS 16.7.8 the app only requires IOS14. When I did get it working on my iPhone half the pages would not open and then when I finally got things going I couldn’t edit some of my answers, and it’s not easy reading the text on the phone. Not Happy

Awful user interface
I despair at apps made this decade that have awful user interfaces. There really is no excuse for it. The email prompts you to use the app, then the app tells you you are “accessing the page from an external app and should copy and paste this link to an external browser”. What. I followed this instruction and was again prompted to use the app, which appeared to clear this message. Stupid.
The manual capture of documents does not work - it clearly didn’t recognise I was photographing a passport and kept telling me to get closer, despite it being out of focus.
At one point is presents several A4 pages of documents, which are obviously impossible to read on a phone screen. And pressing the Sign Here button was like trying to aim at a single pixel on the screen.
TEST your products before releasing them - and think about people for whom smartphone is not a first language!
