Description

Brick was created because we believe that life is better when phones help us do more of what matters, instead of constantly distracting us with things that don't. As two young guys, we were raised on smartphones - so we decided to make something to help us use them the way they were meant to be used.

Brick is a combination of software and NFC-powered hardware that temporarily removes distracting apps (and their notifications) from your phone - leaving only the powerful tools you choose.

With Brick, simply open the app and tap your device to block all distracting apps and notifications. Until you return to the device, you'll be free to engage with what really matters - whether that be getting productive work done, spending time with friends and family, or simply going for a walk. Once you're ready to reconnect, just tap the device again to unblock everything.

The Brick app allows you to:

- customize the apps you want to leave unblocked while Bricked

- track your usage history to see your improvement as you spend more time undistracted

- contact the creators to give input for feature requests and any necessary improvements / fixes

Blowing my mind!

I have tried so many different ways to change my relationship with my phone. I had started to feel hopeless and powerless. Brick is changing things in the most unexpected and amazing ways. I don’t know why the ‘external’ nature of Brick changes the way I think and feel about not being on my phone but it’s incredible! I highly recommend!

Good idea, execution is bad. You have to buy a £50 physical brick for the app to actually work. 1) I wouldn’t pay £50 for it 2) inconvenient unless you only need it when you’re at the same spot day in day out I.e. office. 3) unnecessary clutter

This is insane

I used to be so bad on my phone when working, I’d literally scroll on IG reels inbetween waiting for Chat GPT to finished its answer - that’s crazy.

Break your bad habits

I use this to block social media apps which were draining my time. Within a week the addiction had broken and I no longer bother to unblock them. I have also set a pretty drastic bricking to help me cut down on screen time before bedtime. Brilliant tool, I’ve recommended it to lots of friends. I think it would be useful to enable supervised and careful use of social media for young people as well.

My Brick actually arrived broken which was a real shame as I was looking forward to it.

Really changed the game

I have really struggled with phone addiction. Tried every app blocker, technique etc. I thought as a last resort I would try the Brick as to buy it outright is cheaper than maintaining an app subscription for the year. I put my Brick in my car and I have been achieving Bricked periods for 23 hours most days with a stint of 50 hours as my best. Keeping my Brick in my car means I am not tempted to un-brick and also I have to be really intentional if I do want to unbrick for a short period. It has made social media feel ultimately quite boring and now I scroll for a short period before getting bored. It no longer has the appeal. It’s still early days but this has had the most positive change for me. I did wonder how the Brick would differ from what is already on the market but to keep the Brick in my car has been a game changer for me. I am sure there are other ways you can be creative if you don’t have the car option.

Really good! But a few tweaks would make it perfect

This has been really useful in helping me to manage my phone usage. However I’ve lost the device a couple of times, and think a GPS snapshot showing where you were when you bricked or unbricked would be really helpful in those times so I could retrace my steps. The history schedule could be more detailed showing how much time spent in each mode (and how many bricks and unbricks went on etc). Finally, a way to attach it to your keys would be useful too as then I’d have a better chance of not losing it!

Overall though it’s excellent and I’m so glad to have one!

Started off well but now unusable

This was exactly what I was looking for to help me use my time more intentionally. However after a couple of months the app now doesn’t work and logs me out. When I try and log back in you need a code which if your phone is bricked you then can’t get. I have to then go on my laptop, get the code. It works for one day then stops again. Destroying my screen time!

Thanks to the Brick my screen time has plummeted both at home and away. Brick has NAILED the psychology of having a barrier to picking up your phone every time you have a spare 3 seconds between activities. It works either in the other room, or leaving it at home, or leaving it in the car. Buy a Brick to take your phone back.

My Brick is A Brick

App never sends the verification code through to my email (or any email for that matter), so can’t activate the app and can’t use my brick. We’re now into day 2 of the thing that is supposed to keep me off my phone keeping me at my phone with customer support and still no fix. I’ve been asked to uninstall and reinstall, screen record my process, I’ve checked using other email addresses, other phones. I had none of these problems using my previous software based lockout.

Solid clean design that works with only one potential issue

Really clean app that just works. Of course it’s much better than other apps in its category due to the physical Brick. My only issue is that it doesn’t seem to block websites. I do use a different browser (Vivaldi) so that might be the issue but it would be nice if it could block websites too

Instagram in particular is my vice, I was finding I was getting drawn in to lots of political feeds which was getting me down and making me overwhelmed and helpless. This couldn’t have come at a better time. I still use Instagram but limit my self to 10-15 mins a day just to see what friends are doing quickly and the off again. I’m far more productive at work and home. Also, only being able in one place really limits you to being able to re-enter apps, Great! 10/10 from me!

This is a great app and has helped me a lot. I hope they add an end time as well on the schedule section, sometimes an app is scheduled to brick an hour before i go to sleep, however the next i may forget to unbrick it and go to work, then at work I am unable to use that app. A feature where the apps are scheduled to brick between certain times would be great.

Life changing

This has been what we needed. We don’t have to get rid of social media but we’ve managed to take control of it again. We brick out the evenings and get to sleep much faster and sleep better and it’s turned into a completion as to who between my wife and I can stay bricked longer. It’s such a simple concept but it’s made such a significant difference almost immediately. I love that there are no subscription fees, no ads and you can use one brick for multiple people or buy multiple bricks for multiple places like the car too! Literally amazing. Wish I could brick remotely

All works well, but I am finding it very frustrating that I cannot brick the device without tapping the brick. I misunderstood when I bought it and thought you only had to tap to UNbrick, not both ways.

This makes the device much less useful to me- I want to put the brick somewhere mildly inconvenient to access for unbricking, but this means it’s also inconvenient to brick it. Bricking should be accessible anywhere out and about in my opinion. I’m sure it is possible to change this feature, because there is such thing as “emergency unbrick”. I hope the developers change this in an update!

Break the cycle

I’ve used a number of ways for reducing my screen use including using native iOS app limits. But at some point, it becomes automatic to remove them. Then comes Brick…a device that I keep on my fridge and all the infinite scroll apps I use are bricked….just having a physical barrier to needing to get up and touch the brick to unlock is just enough time for me to think that it’s not worth it. Result, app use down by 40%! It might seem expensive at first look and of course the technology can be replicated. But it does what it needs to and unlike others, has no charge for the software so doesn’t lock you into a pesky subscription!! Keep up the good work lads

Perfect!!

This little device has changed my life!! I Brick my phone before bed every evening and it stops me doom scrolling for hours! And I use it for work so I don’t get distracted. Great if you don’t know how to get around the settings

I got the brick to help me stop getting distracted at work. Very easy to set up and to get started. I was looking around at the settings and seeing what I can block and not and I came across a pretty significant floor if you’re using it personally. You can go into screen time even while bricked and just turn off the permission and all of you apps come back. If you’re doing this on a child or partner’s phone and you set a password to make screen time changes then fine but personally I would rather it wasn’t so easy to just turn it off without touching the brick. It’s a great tool to make yourself accountable for how much you depend on your apps

I would recommend this kind of tool to everyone who is disappointed with themselves for wasting too much time staring at screens. I’ve tried Screen Time and other 3rd party apps to block sites and apps etc and none of them work like Brick. Has made a huge difference

I use this to block social media and streaming apps and keep the brick in my car. This means that these apps are usually blocked for 10-12 hours at a time. I wish I didn’t need the brick but having it has massively reduced my time spent doomscrolling.

A brilliant idea

I have been using the brick for a few months now. It’s absolutely brilliant and has stopped the ‘habit’ of picking up my phone and opening Facebook, in the same way you’d use a lollipop to reduce smoking.

The only criticism is the app does crash, so the device is great but let down by an app that crashes when selecting which apps to block/ allow

Update: Brick has released a scheduling feature which is a great idea! Set it up to use today.

The ‘workarounds’ no longer work and I can’t get online via a link in another app like notes.

I still have issues with the app crashing when selecting apps to block but I copy and paste the app name into the selections now which for some reason stops it crashing rather than just typing in the name so it’s an easy work around. Saved my sanity around my kids!

Old review; I bought Brick and as a UK user had to pay quite a lot to get one. I do really like it but 1) It was problematic trying to block safari, the instructions didn’t work brilliantly but I got there in the end. 2) I have found work arounds for example if I have a hyperlink in my notes app I can follow it and get online even if the browsers are locked, when I find one I try and block the app which leaves me to

My biggest issue 3) the app crashes when setting up which apps are blocked. Brick acknowledge this and I eventually get there but it has been annoying that I have to try repeatedly before I can block an app and finally 4) I don’t have any emergency unbricks for some reason which means I can only brick the phone when physically near the hardware as I don’t want to have to delete the app and start all again!

Overall though it’s a useful tool which is allowing me to be much more present at bedtime with my kids.
