Description

Mystery Walks are a bit like an outdoor escape room combined with a mystery tour, and a fun social activity to do with family or a friend.
For each one, there is a story with an overall mystery to solve.
To do this you'll solve puzzles to unlock each direction of a walking route. Initially you'll have no idea where it's going to take you or end up but you'll get detailed, well-tested walking directions and a live map that shows where you are at all times, which way you are facing, and the next location you're headed to.
The route guides you through historic parts of Cornish towns or villages, often with spectacular views.
The puzzles also gradually build up a set of clues to solve the overall mystery when the end of the walk is reached.
The puzzles are primarily designed for adults although children may enjoy helping to spot clues and helping to solve some of the easier ones. The puzzles vary in type (e.g. words, numbers, logic, or spotting things) and initial difficulty. Every puzzle also has a ladder of hints starting from harder and progressing to very easy to cater for a wide range of aptitudes.
The walking and puzzles typically take around 2-3 hours although this varies slightly with location (the summary for each one has more detailed info). Unlike an escape room, it's not a race so you can take your time, stop to take some photos, refreshments etc and have a relaxing day out.
Once a mystery walk has been downloaded, it runs totally offline with no need for a phone signal or data/internet connection (it's designed and built in Cornwall to be Cornwall-proof).
The app is free to download. Mystery walks are purchased from within the app for £14.99.
Only one download of the mystery walk is needed per family or group of friends, so the price is shared between the group and you can pick the person with the best phone (bright screen for outdoors, good battery etc).

The initial release contains the first 5 mysteries. We'll gradually be adding some more locations in Cornwall over time (each mystery takes 1-2 years to produce but several are already underway).

Fun day out

As the app suggests, the overall experience is akin to a good quality ‘Escape room’ except with a bigger room (a town or village) and often with great views. We have done 2 of these so far and have thoroughly enjoyed both. They provide a fun day out for 2 or more people and therefore very good value for money. The app gives you suggestions on where to park and navigates your there and then directs you to the start point of the town/village you are going to explore. From there, each new direction has to be earned by solving a variety of puzzles and finding things all within the narrative of a story. We found that doing half followed by lunch before completing it was optimal for us. Took us about 3 hours of ‘work’ to complete. Some of the puzzles are quite tricky, but there are several hints available to help you if required so you will never be completely stuck. The app itself is slick, well designed and works without the need for a cell signal. I recommend reading the ‘before you go’ section as it provides useful and some essential info.
