Version 4.28
I had a car accident in rural Perthshire back in January and was having problems giving the location to the emergency services. A driver who witnessed us leaving the road asked us if we had called for help. I told him we were having difficulty and he took my phone and gave them the three words. Truly amazing, we were pinpointed in no time at all.
Thank you

I love this app and use it regularly but to make it great it should be carplay compatible so you can select your saved destinations in the car from the carplay screen. Also the alexa skill needs to be improved so it actually works.

Great for finding new developments and addresses thart aren’t on Google maps yet.
Could be better if we could save the location as a contact address in the apple address book. More of an issue for apple and saved it in Notes but a field for What Three Words would be useful.
It would also be good to be able to dictate to Apple Watch who you want to share the location with from the apple address book. Had to manually do it.

I'm so glad the emergency services here in the UK are using what3words and encouraging people to download it, I've read several stories where the emergency services have used what3words to save lives. I'm blind, and as I can't see landmarks or street signs what3words would be very useful in an emergency, so thanks for making the app accessible with VoiceOver. I've got all my family to download what3words, and I urge everyone to get it, you never know when it could save your life.

I was picked up an hour and three quarter later due to the ambulance not being able to get into the park but without doubt this is a brilliant app

I’ve been using What 3 Words since it became available. I use it for more precise navigation with Waze. I work as a chauffeur and have used it to have clients find me in areas they don’t know or for pickups after drops. I have used it to arrange meeting place. I have used it to assistance after I broke down in the middle of nowhere.
I have used it for fun, just typing 3 random words and seeing where it is in the world.
This app is a must have.

2022-12-11
This is the end of satnav as we know it. This app is so precise, it would be remiss of car manufacturers and designers not to incorporate it into vehicles now and in the future.
Each home should just write their What3Words for their home address in their phone notes in case of an emergency call and it helps support them whist out and about too, say for car breakdown or accident etc.
I use this for documenting safety procedures and have replaced the old GPS coordinates for hospital’s etc., for W3W due to how exact it is with very little tolerance that is worth me worrying about.

This is an app everyone should have on their phone.
We were first on the scene for a car crash. After I phoned the emergency services, a nearby driver had What3Words, using that we could quickly tell the ambulance, fire and police where we were on a rural road in Cornwall. The ambulance came soon after.
This app could save your life or the life of someone else. Download it.

Confusing!

 –
Lost again trucker

2022-05-10
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m finding this system decidedly confusing. Every time I open the app the 3 words allocated to my front door seems to change. I think the system is a very good idea, but a little confusing in my case. Hence only one star because it’s accuracy needs to be improved.
UPDATE:
The developer informs that the different names I get for my front door is because of the GPS on my phone. So she said that if I zoom in on my front door, in the app obviously, then the reference names I get will be more accurate. So I’ll give that a try, it does make sense. Thank you developer for taking the trouble to explain this to me, I have changed my rating.

Good idea but interface needs a bit of work.

The idea and technology behind this is a great idea. But after testing it today I found it lacking when trying to find the car I'd parked. I stored the location of the car, great, easy, done.
But when using the apps compass pointer to locate the car on the way back it leaves you uneasy it has the distance to location as a tiny figure in the top right corner. So small I didn't even notice it until I finally found the car. Rework this feature please by moving the compass pointer higher up the screen and placing the distance to location below in larger obvious font and you've got a genuinely useful location tool. Bit obvious really.

What a waste of time

2022-02-18
What is the point of this app? The blurb says “ What3words is a proprietary geocode system designed to identify any location with a resolution of about 3 metres”
What3words gives you 3 totally unrelated words which are all but impossible to remember!!! So what do you do, you write them down, you lose that piece of paper or you save them on your smart phone; which means you have to setup something or somewhere to store them.
GPS coordinates do exactly the same but you just press a button and store them; and are at least as accurate if not more so!
W3w is used in adverts so again you have to make a note, somehow. So why not just use coordinates!
W3w is the solution to a problem that doesn’t exist!!!!

This app is a life-saver. We came across an injured person in woodland today and were able to share the exact location with the ambulance control team as we sought assistance. It was so hard on the spot to describe where we were - and to even remember names of roads is hard in an emergency. What Three Words solved that immediately and gave us great relief that the ambulance would know exactly where to come. Thank you clever folk who came up with this. Xx

A friend of ours who told us about What3words told us how it saved his life. He was in a remote place and rolled his quad bike and was trapped. He broke ribs pelvis had a collapsed lung and many other injuries. He used the app and the emergency services were able to get to him very quickly. It probably saved his life. I now recommend it to family and friends and at times use it as a sat nav when meeting friends.

I had this app installed because my parents told me it would he useful in an emergency. They were right! I was walking an unfamiliar route home because of road closures and I ended up having to call an ambulance for a passer by who had fallen down some stairs and injured themselves- they couldn’t breathe. I had no idea where I was and it was a dark night so I used this app to tell the ambulance call handler where I was . They were able to locate me no problem with the 3 words the app displayed . Thanks to this app the ambulance could find me quickly and in time to save the man’s life.

This is undoubtedly the app of the year how it gets 4.8 rating is beyond me there is no way this can be considered anything less than full compliments only thing I would change in it is more storage and because of the job these guys have done I would even pay for that “ reasonable amount though please “ it’s a fantastic app and should be handed an award for its reliability and in-depth precision no one can fault this keep it going guys please look forward to what you have in mind next. This is only a small amount of what I could say about this app “How can this app only get 4.7” it’s a 10 every day of the week

I’ve had this app on my phone for a while because I thought it was a good idea, and never had to use it until today when a friend collapsed on the street. Whilst on the phone to the emergency services I loaded up the app to get the 3 word address only for the emergency service agent to tell me that they DONT USE THIS APP AT ALL, and refused to allow me to even attempt to give the 3 words provided by the app.
So instead of the app providing a 10 second location, I had to explain for 6-7 minutes where we were and what was around us as they would not allow use of this app.
I don’t know if this is a failing of the app or the agent on the end of the 999 call, but for an app that advertises itself as for use in emergencies by the emergency services, only for the emergency services to tell me they don’t use the details the app provides is horrific especially during an emergency.

We owe this app everything!

My partner was driving his hgv on a duel carriage way, when he started to lose his eyesight, he managed to pull over safely but was deteriorating quickly, suffering from a stroke. He couldn’t see well but managed to call the emergency services but couldn’t tell them exactly where he was. luckily he had the app and was able to open it and the ambulance was able to reach him in time to save him from having a massive stroke. If it wasn’t for his quick thinking to call 999 and this app things would have been life changing for him and our family. Everyone needs to download it… it’s life saving.

I knew the village where the farm I wanted was so drove there and then opened the app and typed in the three words. App showed the square on the map but as soon as I touched the map to scroll & zoom it for a better view the Stupid App MOVED the highlighted square to where I had touched and displayed the three words for that one. It now looked as if the location I wanted was right nearby (as that is where I touched to scroll) and not farther down the road where it really was.
So much too centered on displaying the three words of a location and hopeless to actually navigate to a place. I have since found out the app will open google maps but all I needed was to see the location of the farm on a map - didn't need google to give me directions. If wanted to google would have used their plus codes.

I originally downloaded this app because I saw an advert online saying that it helps the emergency services and upon reading the reviews that has been proven. It works amazingly and is very easy to use. I’m also very happy with it because I live on a new build estate and most maps don’t have us on but what three word does. I would definitely encourage people to download, if for no other reason to help in case of emergency.

I use this all the time, it’s the best app for so many things. I paraglide, and during a recent accident, friends were able to direct emergency services to the exact location of the injured pilot. This is not something that could have been achieved without the app due to the terrain and the simplicity of W3W. Locational coordinates could have achieved the same result, but they have multiple formats and are complex. This is great for the layperson. I’ve used it to meet people in new venues in London, including obscure large architectural treats and locations in parks. I live in Sussex and have also used this app to meet friends out walking on the South Downs during lockdown. I can’t recommend it more!!

I’ve been banging the WTW drum since I first heard about it a couple of years ago. I own a pub in the middle of no where and constantly have couriers and visitors asking for directions. Particularly to barn conversation type properties. This app solves all those problems in an instant. I would suggest to the developers that they contact rural estate agents/realtors and encourage them to use WTW. If prospective buyers use the app to find their dream home I’m sure they would adopt it as part of the properties address. Also association’s like the pony club and the kennel club. Keep up the good work.

Today I had to perform CPR on a jogger I had discovered while dog walking in a country park. The location was a distance away from any drivable roads and although I knew where I was when asked by the 999 operated for a location I could not describe my location quickly, thankfully another passer by had this app and was able to quickly give a precise location. I have now downloaded the app and will be telling everyone I know how to use it.

A few months ago, I was on a long walk in the middle of nowhere with my best friend, her mum and her 5 year old brother. Her and I were running around, hanging out, while her mum was busy looking after her brother. Eventually, we found a tall tree so my friend started to climb up it while I waited at the bottom. Suddenly, while she was at the top of the tree, the branch she was on snapped, and she fell out of the tree (about 15ft high) she was on the floor in pain and we didn’t know what to do. Her mum was with us at the time and she got out her phone and used what3words to tell the ambulance where we were. After a while the ambulance came and took her safely to the hospital. I have no idea what we would do without what3words.
Please download this app, because you never know it could save your life.
Stay safe everyone hope you have a great day and ty for reading ❤️

I’m an emergency services worker, and this is fantastic

I’m an emergency services worker in the UK. I’m on a team covering a very large rural area, and this is incredibly helpful. Not only is it a slick app, but the concept behind it is a real game changer. Our control room use it when people call for help, and we use it to help each other reach locations. The ambulance service in our area also use it. I urge everyone, especially those in rural areas, at least find out what the 3 words are for their home location and write it down and keep it near your phone because postcodes and maps are wrong more often than people would think. But also have the app installed if they break down in the middle of nowhere. Sure there are other ways, like GPS coordinates and OS map refs, but they are not easy to memorise and this simplifies things for people in a stressful crisis. Top tip - there will be a few sets of words near you (each 3M squares), so choose ones that are easy to communicate without ambiguity, for example avoid words that sound the same but have different spellings (lead, led, etc) or can be tricky to spell. Stay safe.

I seen this a while back on App Store and as I hike regularly with the dogs I thought ok so downloaded hoped I never had to use it or so I thought ! Recently whilst hiking I came across someone who was ill equipped for the weather ( ice ) ie no equipment for winter walking this man had fallen & hurt ankle really bad turned out after looking ( EFR AED 1st responder first aid trained ) it was broken He had been in -15c windchill for 2 hours, I walk regularly I had recently changed mobile network for best coverage on hills + spare mobile on different network & managed to get a call out to emergency services I used what3words to give my exact location & the man was rescued from the hills I hope I never have to use again but I feel safer knowing I have it this it will save lives !! FACT !! Please if you walk , climb or just anyone download this it could save a life

This morning I witnessed a road traffic accident on my way to work. Lucky person was okay but needed the police and ambulance just in case. Someone called 999, but wasn’t sure exactly where we were and the dispatcher wasn’t local so didn’t understand either. I got out my what3words app and we were immediately found. Very helpful and got the services to us without delay or confusion. Recommend this be advertised more as the person that called 99 didn’t have a clue about what it was, but was impressed at how helpful it was.

I've only just gotten the app and it's a great system, however the first thing I did was to try it in airplane mode, and although I can see the 3 word address to my (inaccurate location), I can not load the map and at least have some idea of where my accurate location is.
And when I see in the bottom left of the screen that it is using Google maps anyway, I'm surprised we don't have the ability to download maps for offline use (or better yet, automatically tap into the maps I've already got on my device in Google maps).
This seems like an obvious feature to add with the next update and would make the app 5 star.

Must have!!!

I cannot thank what3words enough. I did not have a sat nav and my maps on my phone stopped working. The floods were horrendous and I could not find a route home as lots of routes were blocked with flooding. My partner told me to to go onto “what3words” and send him my location and he could come and get me in a better car.
This was the first time I had used this. It was so simple to use and yet so useful in getting me out of a sticky situation! I’d probably still be stuck if it wasn’t for what3words! A definite must have!!!❤️👏🏼🙏🏼

I hope I never have to use it!

If I have to use it that means I’m in a serious situation! It’s something I’m very glad to save space on my phone for though! My two kids aged 10 and 12 both know how to use the app and give the 3 words to the operator if anything ever happened where we were lost and in need of help. I think it’s a great tool to have for anyone! I can think of a handful of situations where a person might need to use it! Such a brilliant idea. Thanks to the developers and person who thought of it!!

I was involved in an car accident not too long ago and had to make an emergency phone call to the police! I was stuck on the motor way in the UK during rush hour traffic in the far right Lane unsure of where I was as it was pitch black. What3Words helped the police locate our accident and had an emergency response team out within minutes to close off the heavy traffic and get our selfs and vehicles off the road and back to safety. Fantastic App and a must have for pretty much all phones, should come pre-installed if you asked me. 👍🏼

Thank you so much! I can’t thank this app enough!
I downloaded this app a moth or so ago as I thought it could come in handy if I got into trouble whilst out walking my dogs around the fields behind my house.
Luckily I did as I was out for a walk with my mum one evening when she fell over and broke her ankle. We were in the middle of no where and it was getting dark! It would have been very difficult to describe our location to 999 without this app! When I used the 3 words for my location the operator knew exactly where we were and the paramedics found us easily.
Thank you so much again! Anyone reading this please download this app, it could seriously help.

Allocating every location with a 3 mtr grid square worldwide and associating three words to that 3 mtr square that are unique to that 3 mtr sized grid square really pinpoints you in remote areas for emergency services ie if out hiking and one of the hike group needs urgent assistance, when phone 999 instead of saying you can see a hill with a quarry to East etc, instead you can use this app to give an exact location for the required emergency services to rush to as 999 call centres are familiar with this GPS initiative

Brilliant idea, app needs some work

Brilliant idea but the app needs basic features adding. There is no search history which is a nuisance. As an example I’m running a training course at a customer site and I need to travel to and from the hotel I’m staying in every day for a week. Because there’s no search history I need to type in the customer’s name every morning and the hotel name every evening, bit of a pain, especially as I can’t remember the name of the hotel, so I have to search my emails for the booking confirmation... In both Waze and Google maps the last twenty or so addresses appear below the search box.
Ok, so I could favourite each location the first time I visit, favouriting is easy, can be done with one tap, apart from adding the label! But I have remember to do that... ugh.
But then accessing a favourite needs four taps, one to save, four to get to! No quick access to your favourites from the search bar either. Even worse, the search doesn’t look in the favourites! I’ve labelled my home address as Home but searching for Home doesn’t find the favourite. When I have a hundred or so favourites how do I search them?
I love the idea and there are situations where this app has no equal but without these basic features Waze and Google Maps are still more convenient to use.
Please add these features.

So I was on a nice walk with my mum and grandma to get out and a car mashed into a someone that was pulling out and some bits of pieces flew off and hit me and my family both in there legs then I remembered I had what3words app and I used my watch to call 999 and my phone for the app and they knew were to find me and my family and the people who got injured and I couldn’t believe it they knew where to find me I didn’t need to tell them what city I was in so I am lucky to even to be typing this thank you

Im an ex military, para with a medic specialty. Used to work for 999 Emergency when retired. The most important thing for us was always to establish precise location. Last Friday i was running down very steep hill with an intention to speedfly. Unfortunately my foot got stucked in between the rocks while i was still running in result it was twisted and almost fully torn off. Still concious i have managed to disconnect of harness, pack it and crawl down to the small space emergency servises could easily approach. When i say easily that means i was on relatively flat ground not a slope. This is when I called Emergency Services and used my app. Without it i would not be able to say anything except North Slope which is many miles long. Multi agencies including Air Medivac were involved and help arrived promptly.

Quite complicated to sort out. I have had several different three words, it might be that I have not idea what I am doing. We are in a remote cottage so thought it useful to have
Thank you for your response, I understand now. I have and iPhone XR. You are absolutely right, the location marker would not stay still even on a table and the three words kept changing, I guess as we were in a very remote area the emergency services would have found us on the one set, hopefully. Fortunate for us we didn’t need them. It is a great product and I feel safer with it than without

Mr 'Pointless' has missed the point! You don't need special equipment, just a phone and the app. I am still learning its many uses - I have only just learned it can be used in a Satnav, or for pinpointing those 'you can't miss it' houses without clear names or numbers, finding your car or tent in a miriad of others and so on. My favourite use is finding amusing or apposite combinations of words! I think perhaps the squares are smaller than necessary- my own house is covered by about a dozen.

I recently contacted Thames Valley Police to ask why the aren’t using W3W. Once you try it, you can’t fail to see the possible applications. From meeting up with friends at a new venue in town to saving lives in a dark, unknown location, it kicks the proverbial rear end. I passed it on immediately to my mate in Maun, Botswana. Addresses are a source of some ridicule there, but with W3W you suddenly have a way of letting people know where you live. Also places to meet up in the back of beyond. Wish I had shared. I think it’s a transformative cross-platform location/navigation tool that will affect so many lives, and only for the better.

Amazing!!

Although I am only young I love any medical being a first aider myself. To finally have an app that can let people know where you are in emergency situations is amazing! My father is a paramedic and often comes home annoyed after a long day trying to find people and where they’re in distress. To anyone who counteracts this app and says that it’s “stupid” or “pointless” then please reconsider your thoughts, this app is going to save countless lives and save time for the paramedics getting to the person in need. Understand that this app will better us all in different ways as it can also be used as a map for people who are lost and need help finding their way home ♥️

Seemingly not great on remote islands...?!

I can see this app being useful for those who don’t use grid references / maps but only when there’s signal it seems... I decided to test this out on a remote Scottish island where you mostly only get “GPRS” mobile phone signal. It wouldn’t work for me, so if it does work using GPS, how? Is there a setting you need to change? When I was away from 3G or WiFi the map wouldn’t load - you just got an unhelpful series of grids and it didn’t display the 3 words for your location. You could click on a random square and it gave 3 words but that’s not helpful if you can’t see a map & want / need to know where you are!
In contrast, my other app that is based on British National Grid has worked seamlessly & brilliantly - providing me with accurate grid references all day. Just what I need biological recording.

So simple yet so profound!

What3words has fundamentally changed how I share location information. Period.
At work and at home, with family and friends, it is now so easy to share locations by using three simple words instead of more complicated addresses, GPS coordinates or the like.
What3Words isn’t there to ‘replace’ anything we may currently use - it simply provides a more ergonomic way of communicating location information.
The app is the epitome of What3Words: simple to use, intuitive, and does exactly what it needs to do.

I am a motorcyclist and tragically 2 days ago lost one of my closest friends while we were out on a ride. He misjudged a bend and hit a tree. When we called for an ambulance they wanted to know what road we were on and what the nearest houses were etc. We were in a very rural location, basically in the middle of nowhere. Another mate who was riding with us had the presence of mind to use this app to tell the ambulance where we were and it meant the land ambulance and air ambulance knew exactly where to come to. Sadly he couldn’t be saved, but everyone should have this app on their phone. It could be the difference between life and death for you or your loved ones.

A real lifesaving app!

I only heard of this app a week ago. Last night out ten year old went on a dog walk and went off track. He and his friend got totally lost in the pitch dark with no clue of where they were.
We had police, mountain rescue and a drone out searching but we managed to get data added to her phone and the app downloaded. I managed to find them literally in the middle of nowhere as the app located them exactly.
Everyone - especially parents need to get this app on the family phones!

Vital information to fire service

Downloaded the app and had a look around it but never used it till today. Driving home I came across a haystack fire. This was in the middle of nowhere with no visible landmarks and being dark it also made things harder. When speaking to the fire service I was able to give them the location of the access road leading to the fire.
This information is vital to the emergency services and can help them find you quicker than if you were to give them instructions based on things you see. I highly recommend people get it as you don’t know when you may need it.

To counter the “pointless” reviewer

Writing a review to point out the mistakes in the reviewer who titled their review “Pointless”. At first I assumed that it required data signal to interpret any GPS location into a 3word location. The fact is, once downloaded to try, is that in airplane mode the app can still leverage the iPhone’s built in GPS module to get a location. Furthermore, you can pinpoint ANY location in the world, and find the 3word location. This is impressive: means that it somehow has a full mapping of EVERY 3x3 square in the world, available to identify where you are.
Of course, the issue then is how you’re supposed to contact someone if you don’t have any digital network signal... but in general, say you’re lost in a city and need to find the one and only open gate to a location, you can specify and share to your friends (who also have this app).

Too clever for its own good.
You need a device (connected to the internet) to convert a grid reference into 3 random words. You have no way of working out where this is. It could be anywhere in the world. You need a device (preferably connected to the internet?) to convert these 3 random words back to a grid reference. What’s the point of converting a number that is totally understandable (debatable?) into 3 random words that are less understandable (debatable)? Without some sort of device there is no way of knowing if the 3 random words represented a valid location. Anyone who knows the grid ref system would know immediately if the number made any sense.
Why not just use a grid reference? At least anyone familiar with the system has some idea where it is. It can also be used with varying levels of accuracy (I.e. a general location or a more precise location). The 3 word system lacks this.
A grid ref can also be read from a MAP!

The application is amazing, really useful for those addresses where there are not numbers or even street names. It is a really good idea and hopefully many people will be using it soon (car breakdown companies specially). I've only have two little requests for designers, 1) it would be fantastic to be able to order your saved locations. 2) it also would be nice to be able to choose two languages at the same time. I live in the UK and when sharing my locations I do it to different friends being from Spain and the UK and to give them the correct words, I need to be change the settings-languaje to provide to them the addresses.

Great app I think everyone should automatically get this on their device since it makes life easier and quicker in an emergency. Also you might not know the road name where you are and you need the rescue services to come to your aid quickly. It is good for children and teens because they don’t pay attention to where they are and this app will help them if they need it such as life threatening situations or allergies. I rate this app 5 stars and think it is helping the world make progress on safety.

Why struggle to remember the address of where you are going, especially when it’s Postcode covers several buildings that don’t have a number on.
Have you ever had to look for an address that you discover doesn’t have its number on & can’t be seen from outside? I have pulled my hair out at times when trying to find “the cottage” or “XYZ Limited’s” building that doesn’t have its name on? What3Words has been the answer to my prayers!
Same goes for going on holiday where “Sol Mare”, last September I went on holiday to Greece, the coach couldn’t get to the hotel directly due to it being half a mile up a track. So we were dropped off on the main road. Walking up the track on each side we found dozens of places, none of which we could read the Greek name. Fortunately the owner had given the What3Word address. This led us straight to the front door, yet several other travellers on our coach were still looking for their place by the time we were sitting on our balcony.
What3Word is my Company’s addressing system now. We have cut out days of lost time since September 2018- March 2019 in lost man-hours looking for customers addresses.
It even works in my Mercedes too. Just put in the three word address and the car’s Satnav delivers me to the door.

The app just keeps getting better with every update. Runs smooth, allows me in my job to save hard to find locations for future reference, just need more people to be made aware of the benefits of this app, over the old outdated postcode, which in rural areas one postcode can cover a 3-5 mile radius, yet this app will lead you to the front door.
Can’t praise this app enough and 5 stars is underrated for this app.
Keep up the great work developers, you deserve all the praise you get.

What3words is a fantastic way to discuss location. There’s no need for complicated descriptions, erroneous addresses or lengthy coordinates. Simply open the app, press the locator arrow, and BOOM! Your local 3m x 3m grid square is addressed 😎👍 Perfect for tagging your car in a car park, letting family and friends know where *exactly* to meet at an event, or simply to let people know where you are in the countryside.
This breakthrough new way of discussing location is making waves across society, both in industry and emergency services, so the more we use it the quicker everyone will adopt it. It’s great, it’s free, and it’s so useful!
For shoppers or site-seers, I’d highly recommend the partner “3WordPhoto” app, as you can snap your newfound bargain or favourite vista, and instantly be able to locate it again in future!

I found out about this app after a friend of mine on a neighbouring farm had a stroke and despite being told not to follow the postcode the emergency services did so and arrived at the wrong farm. My friend found out about this app and felt medical help could have been given much quicker if the 3 word location had been used. However I am not sure if the emergency services have this yet in the UK so my interest was more out of curiosity than anything. It is a joy, just as a linguistic play. The randomness and spookily appropriate nature of the words generated is a joy. I recommend this to anyone who has a love of language.
