Brilliant app

It’s my go to browser. Those annoying adverts that not only slow down page load, but also interfere with viewing the site just don’t happen anymore. I suspect the iPad app doesn’t have the full functionality that I might find using my windows laptop. I’m going to check that out. It is a superb iPad browser.

Great But…

App is great for people wanting a privacy centric browser some minor UI improvements would make bookmarks easier to use but major oversight is visibility of what the ‘Manage Cookie Pop-ups’ (best effort cookie management) has done when the capability is enabled. DDG does not allow you to review what actions have been taken, so that you can confirm if, for example, Legitimate Interest claims have been objected for you or if you have to make the effort to object. Also it’s impossible to manually surface a web sites cookie banner after DDG has’ managed’ cookies so the function is useless you trust DDG’s best effort cookie management (note DDG warns that it’s best effort cookie management does not work for all sites).

After having been sim hacked and spyware put in my new Samsung z4 I bought the new iPhone 14pro and installed ddg it’s stopped and warned me of 7 attempts in 3 days of firing up the new phone I’ve now got rid of all my Google accounts and feel safe again top bit of software.

Nuke the cookies

I’ve used Google for years (simply because it’s Safari’s default search engine ) but was getting more and more annoyed with them. I don’t know if this is really the case, but it seemed to me that they quite deliberately try and obstruct your efforts to opt out of cookies and tracking.

Then I discovered this search engine, with it’s wonderful, nuke the cookies button - two taps and they’re GONE!!

Peaceful internet browsing

I was becoming overwhelmed with being bombarded with ads and pop ups, and I hated that I could see my previous browsing history on another website trying to sell me the very thing I have just bought or left behind.

DuckDuckGo has really changed this for me and for those of you that don’t remember the internet of the past with no ads and pop ups: this is the closest you’ll get to it.

Very quiet internet browsing and my desktop is performing better too.

It is alarming the amount of information that is harvested from you. On my desktop, DuckDuckGo identified circa 12k tracking attempts in one week.

TWELVE THOUSAND.

and those are the cookies the browser could stop. You just know some of them slip through the net.

But at least we have a chance now.

I love it but….

It’s fast, pages load very quickly, it’s shocking to see all the trackers web sites try to download, I like the burn button that cleans everything out. BUT I really need bookmark syncing across devices to make this my default browser.

Excellent app, improving all the time

Thank you DDG 🫶 for this excellent app and all you do. This app keeps getting better, and the auto cookie complete is a godsend. Every time it handles those PITA cookie pop ups, I raise a smile.

Third party companies based around the world that I have never heard of have absolutely no business collecting, tracking, selling, misusing my internet activity, so when I see pre-ticked legitimate interest boxes, it really makes my blood boil; especially when there are 100’s of them and the service provider makes it as difficult as possible to opt-out by not providing a bulk opt-out button. That’s against everything GDPR stands for in principle and they abuse their privilege everyday with millions of victims.

DuckDuckGo makes a stand and they should be proud for standing up for us all. Well done.

Why has it changed?

Duckduckgo is a good browser and does mostly what it says on the tin. But it seems since recent updates, it is not blocking the Facebook advertising tracker. This is the type of tracker I would like blocked, it helps prevent FB data profiling a user. So I am disappointed that they are not being blocked now.

As FB is not being blocked, I have changes to another Browser.

I've set DuckDuckGo as my default search engine on Safari, but the DuckDuckGo app takes it to another level! It's creepy seeing the amount of trackers that are blocked, and I love that the app can take care of the cookie consent popups on websites as well!

If security and tracking etc is your main concern they are good, the browser aesthetics however are poor, someone needs to jazz it up and at times it’s depressing using the browser when I can visit the same website in chrome and it makes me happy.

A shame, please look at urgently

I have used this app as my go to browser for some time now. However after the last update a couple of days ago this app had twice destroyed my battery, dropping 80%+ overnight. I woke to find my phone dead, luckily I woke before my alarm which wouldn’t have gone off.

I’ve had to delete the app and use another browser now, as I can’t have it hammer my battery life. I might swap back, but getting used to the new browser.

I have a fully updated iPhone SE 2020.

Default Browser

I have been using DuckDuckGo since I have become more privacy and security minded person. I care about my data and what is out there. However, I lack few features in the browser. The most important one is to be able to switch between windows by swiping left and right. I don’t understand why it hasn’t been implemented already, the fact that you have to go to your open windows and then select the window you want to open every time is mind boggling for me.

I tried to give you some feedback but there was no free text option

Is it just me or are others having the following problem?

Today I have noticed that DDG has reported to me several times that ‘it cannot load this page as it could not connect to the server’.

If I use another search engine it works fine. I am have an up to date version of DDG App and using a fully ultimate iPad running 16.5.1 (c).

I have rebooted my iPad and deleted cookies and still DDG won’t open the requested web page.

I love this App and used it a lot up until a couple of days ago when I found that it was depleting my iphone11 battery overnight! I have background app refresh turned off but it still drained my battery from 86% to 19% in 11 hours!

When the tech people get it sorted I’ll reinstall it.

This is a wonderful search engine so wish I had heard of it sooner it was only by accident it was mentioned to me when I was frustrated with for example increasing flight prices when I was researching for dates and going into sites several times. This way of searching offers both privacy and protection and so therefore every search is new so no chance of getting caught out as per above. Previous history is cancelled and the safeguard continues. Thank you very much highly recommend.

Love it, but…

Since the last major iOS release, he app performance has been terrible. Pages load partially or not at all and, at an estimate, approximately 80% of the time I have to follow a link to a page, wait for the page to partially load, then hit refresh and then I normally see it load in a reasonable amount of time. If I don’t hit refresh I get nothing more than a few page artifacts and lots and lots of emptiness. Please, bring back the browser behaviour I once knew and loved.

Just what i was looking for

DuckDuckGo has been my search engine of choice for a while but when a recent update made the default browser show open tabs as tiles i have been looking for one that uses a more list like function. Unlike other browser options DuckDuckgo has this option and is now my browser on my phone too. It is a relief that i can be a little less diligent rejecting cookies. Also weirdly one website i goes to shows more articles using DuckDuckgo, very odd.

Great browser with latest update fixing issues

My go-to Apple browser on mobile and desktop. The one big improvement would be to sync bookmarks and favourites across devices. I recently got an iPad Pro 12.9 M1 which is a wonderful tablet. Immediately put DDG on (had to set-up all favourites and bookmarks ☹️). I have 17 favourites and randomly they display correctly (5 icons wide) and other times in one long line at the top of the browser window. The change can happen in the same session, back and forth. Weird. Still the best browser despite the issues. 19 Oct 2022 update - still broken.

I don’t know why I didn’t switch a long time ago! I am so tired of websites that don’t allow you to reject cookies. I keep being told just don’t use them, then. But sometimes I can’t avoid using some websites, so the option to incinerate everything at the end of a session is great. I love the flames too, great touch. I feel much more secure knowing I’m not being constantly tracked without my consent.

Someone called you ‘woke’ - badge of honour, I’m in.

Anyone saying something is ‘woke’ means it as an insult, I think understanding that this is a technical product protecting your privacy from people flogging your data as a ‘commodity’ completely robotically, and it must have some ‘steer’ to it’s filtering is important. Does offer to block cookies on my ipad pro m1. Does work. Woke’s fine. The opposite it turns out, is not ‘asleep’ but often over-sensitive to other people’s issues, the complainer doesn’t even get affected by, most of the time. So, count me in. Woke as…! DuckDuckGo was the best option out of all the main search engines… until they started getting involved in politics. The CEO and company lack integrity and have decided to make it harder to find the obscure (truth) articles that were missing from Google and Bing search results. Deleted from all devices and will use Brave search until I find something better. The DuckDuckGo app was never anything special but I installed it in support of their search engine. I no longer support them so have no use for the app anymore. 1 star because it’s not possible to give 0 if leaving a comment.

Ad and intrusion free......

DuckDuckGo is so efficient, none ad, none intrusive (unlike google) and I have never had a problem with security ie no scams spyware or endless pop up ads, and no payments for ad free sites because I simply don’t get them with DuckDuckGo! Google, Facebook, Instagram etc are so big now and multi platform owned users get swept into all kinds of ads, surveys, and endless “you may like this” companies trying to sell things. I have 30,000 followers on social media platforms I am pushing them to delete DuckDuckgo You have become a woke lefty organisation. The very reason I switched to your browser Let me ask you a question… You see that there is a global monopoly which censorssearch results on the internet, and you see that scoresof people are complaining about this, so much so that politicians are beginning to take notice. Being the industrious go-getter that you are, you decide to do something about it and start your own search engine which emphasizes uncensored search results and privacy from 3rd party ads. Against all odds, your search engine takes off to much fanfare; people love the uncensored search results, and they really like not seeing all those pesky advertisements too…. Trending: UPDATE: Did We Find Fauci? Then just as quickly as lightning strikes, a petrodollar war breaks out, and you decide to royally screw yourself by getting on Twitter and announcing that you are going to do the exact same thing that global monopoly did—censor results. Doesn’t make any sense does it? Yet this is exactly what Gabriel Weinberg, the founder of DuckDuckGo, just did in a series of tweets. Weinberg was met with scores of people disavowing his product and his company, and if you don’t believe me just click on his Tweets and read the comments—none of them are positive.

No longer unfiltered

DuckDuckGo has began censoring their search results similarly to Google and Bing, in a complete 180 on their previous pledges to their users. This combined with worsening search quality and the poor quality apps has become too much for me personally. Privacy alone isn’t something that DuckDuckGo can sell as a feature anymore since various other privacy-first search engines like Brave Search, Ecosia, SearX, etc, that offer more than just “we don’t track you except for when we use analytics we don’t let you turn off”.

Thanks for responding to literally nothing I said. If DuckDuckGo is so focused on privacy then why does your in-house forced analytics not allow me to see search results if I try to protect my privacy by blocking it

Loads pages twice!?

I would rave about this (privacy, of course, but also it doesn't try to reload the last page you were on, like Safari does - I have to close windows manually every time I close Safari down) but..... Is it really just me for whom DDG loads every single page twice? Annoying if I'm entering a password, or have scrolled down, only to have to start again. No-one else on the web seems to have reported this, but I don't think I'm losing my marbles.... Could a developer take a look? iPhone 6S and iPad 6th gen, always update to the latest DDG. Thanks! I’ve used DuckDuckGo for several years. It’s a perfectly good search engine which does pretty much exactly the same as Google, and is equally easy to use, but without the gross invasion of personal privacy which is the price of using Google. My only reservation is the name, which doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue. (Google has become a verb. Can’t imagine anyone saying “I DuckDuckGoed it”.) But in all important respects it’s great

I was skeptical as to how the search engine would function without cookies, mainly if the content would not be what I’m looking for and if the searching would be random, but DuckDuckGo functions just as efficiently as other search engines. The more I use it the more I see the myths Google propagate around the use of cookies and functionality to encourage us to accept tracking and scrutiny under the guise of ease of use and security. It’s quite shocking. I love the way I can close the tabs and remove trace of my usage of it to avoid tracking and targeted advertising. It’s a great search engine and I will be recommending it widely. Thank you DuckDuckGo.

Convenient private browsing than most browsers

If you want to visit any sites you rather not want browser to track you it’s very good and easy to use. Features are simple and you don’t have to remember a million settings that come with other browsers attached to your Google account for instant asking for this and that permission etc. I call it browse and dump all your history on one button push. Having compared the search results with Google it doesn’t seem vastly different but I noticed Edge is.

Absolutely amazing

I love the fact the it’s so easy to clear all data, helps me feel comfortable with its security. I love how it shows me who would be tracking me on different websites. I love the fact that it gives rating for different website security. Also the layout is very comfortable and easy to get used to (unlike some others).

Different...

Really nice to have a Browser that just does what it says on the tin, and doesn’t feel that it needs to follow you everywhere, and also has the added bonus of blocking the efforts of others who try to.

A nice new feature is the little message that now appears telling you what’s been blocked or avoided ....Thanks Folks for making the Internet at least a little bit safe and trustworthy again ...👍

For so long I have felt totally violated under continuous bombardment from targeted advertisers watching... hanging on to my key strokes hoping I’d be their next target, not to purchase the advertised product or service but loitering to pick up my personal data.

I delivered free papers as a youngster, they were full of advertisements which was expected as the paper was free, at no time did I enter a home and start rifling through drawers looking for personal details of the household, that would be intrusive, wouldn’t it?

After watching the ‘Social Dilemma’ on Netflix I knew something had to change, ‘Duck Duck Go’ is doing it! Since I’ve installed it I’ve not gone back to google/safari, I now feel I’m in a safe place especially with banking, seeing all the followers getting locked out in the search bar is so satisfying. THANK YOU DUCK DUCK GO!

Sick of google and other apps using my data to fine tune their ad campaigns to me to increase profits, squeezing every penny out of me. And what about my civil rights? They know who and what I am better than anyone after God lol! Collecting more data gives them the means to create as many different formulas for me as possible relating and not limited to: psych evaluation, medical condition, likes dislikes, personality type, wealth bracket, intellectual ability/type, current addictions, possible future addictions, vices, virtues...the list is endless.

Thats what it should’ve been called!!! Really quick search engine! After the main search engine started slowing everybody down because their a bunch of tossers, I looked at this engine, I’m glad I did, every search I do its instant also they can tell you who's tracking you and burn em out!!! lol And, the engine does not track you because before I got adverts on other stuff I was looking at, now I never get them!! Bugs

I like the principle behind this app but the issue I keep having are driving me insane. Sometimes when I’m on a page an scroll down the tabs at the top disappear. Not usually a problem as it means the screen is more focused on the page. The problem is when I want to go back a page or look at another tab because now I can’t get the top to come back down. I’m scrolling up and down, flicking like mad but still stuck. I’m forced to click a link to something I have no interest in just to get the top back. This feels like such a stupid bug and I hope it gets fixed soon

Top browser

Finally a browser that does what I need, simple, clear and secure and always find what I’m searching for. Really like that you can see the trackers that have been blocked and other security information my only suggestion would be for some nicer wallpaper on the home page instead of a blank background on iPhone app.

Good to explore

I read about this search engine in an article in the Christian newspaper I get called Evangelicals Now. In it the author said he used Duck Duck so I thought I’d give it a try. I like the fact it seems independent and free from all sorts of information sharing and tracking on the search engine I was using. So far it has delivered the answers I have sought thought I did once have to rewrite the question to make it clearer what I was looking for.

It feels good to be ever so slightly freer of a big tech giant!

Absolutely brilliant… downloaded it, went to one of my favourite sites, and was told that blasted facebook was trying to track me. I have never had an account with the data grabbing lunatics. What I would like to know is if I could transfer all the data from my DuckDuckGo from safari, as I have settings on there that are not available on the app. Apart from that, I would like to give more stars, and if you are thinking about asking to pay for the app, I am well up for that as well.

Dopey me found out how to load my settings from safari, now it is an even better app. There is probably somewhere where I can make a donation, but me being dopey as well as daft, cannot find it.

Brilliant

I’ve tried any number of “secure browser” on the iPad. Most of them are sorely lacking in features and crash every five minutes. I’ve been using this non stop for five hours, not a crash or hint of a problem. Everything works smoothly - it felt just like using Safari - but it keeps thing nice and secure. I logged into a forum I use a lot and instantly got a Facebook tracker blocked that I didn’t even know about.

Thanks DuckDuckGo, it’s a winner.

I liked the idea that this app blocks trackers I got sick of every time I did a search I would get an advert for something I may have looked at, it drove me nuts this tracks and blocks them and I haven’t had as many, plus I like how you tap on the flame and it clears your history and you can even see who is tracking you at the beginning of the search bar...

It’s a good search engine...

Love this app

I love this app!! I was shocked to see the companies that were trying to track me when I went onto my different sites (uni portal/ shopping websites)

It drives me nuts that websites don’t let you browse without wanting to “add cookies” and track your every move! I never accept them but it is hard to get around sometimes.

On here you see little symbols at the top of the page of the companies trying to track you, then you see a line through them to show they’ve been blocked.

I don’t even use Facebook so was disgusted to see they were trying to track me. I was really irritated because I don’t use “social” media for a reason, so why they are tracking clothing and uni websites ... I don’t know.

I’ve told my partner about it and he’s downloaded the app and I’m going to keep raving about it to everyone. Privacy is so important to me and I’m glad there’s finally an app that protects my info.

Dear DuckDuckGo,

I am, after searching and reading your article about Google, and it been a tracking company using all its algorithms, which was frightening but trying to get your app to load is even more frightening, because it just doesn’t do anything, so why is that happening after all you said? I tried your app a few months ago and now i know why i deleted your app.

I want too use your app , but it just nothing for me, and I guess I will have to take my chances with Google., taking as many precautions as possible, such as only turning off my location services etc.

Fireproof!

The ability to “fireproof” websites means that you can regularly wipe all your cookies expect those associated with particular sites so you don’t have to sign in again every time you visit them. It’s a wonderful combination. Adverts for those shoes you bought a few weeks ago no longer chase you around the internet, and you’re immune to other more nefarious uses of cookies too.

The one downside is that every time you visit a website after clearing cookies you’ve gotta click through a GDPR consent request (if you live in the EU). Would be nice if they could automate responses to those.

Very good but some bugbears

This app is very good, and am glad there is a browser that keeps your data private. However there is a couple of things that slightly annoy me. Firstly even though I’ve fireproofed one website it still doesn’t automatically log in every time, which is slightly annoying. Also I use a password manager and the interface to automatically insert passwords from it into a website isn’t close to being as slick on this app as on, say, safari. However these really are minor bugbears and on the whole it’s a very good app.

Two improvements

The page back and forward buttons on this browser do not offer a history option. I.e on Safari if you hold and press the back or forward button, you can view and scroll through the pages that you travelled to get to the current pageyou are on. Since making DDG my default browser on all my iOS 14 devices, I’ve found myself glued to pages that use JavaScript to defeat history navigation. The back button merely refreshes the page you are on.

Safari introduced a page font size adjust button and it would be great if DDG had this for those of us with failing eyesight.

For the above reasons I can’t give a top score, but it’s a worthy 4/5.

Incredible, but just needs one more feature

This browser is absolutely brilliant, I love the unbiased results that you’d normally wouldn’t get with stuff like google. The UI is great and nice to use. My favourite feature is locking the app with Face ID. However, it could be made better if a night mode for websites was introduced like Firefox. This is the feature where websites such as Wikipedia that don’t already have dark mode, get automatically turned dark through the browser. This small addition would make the app even more of a pleasure to use.

I’ve been using Duck duck go, for a while now, on my Safari browser. Really like that it tells you who is tracking you and that my browsing is private. The big companies have gathered far too much info on people and now even the smallest bit of privacy is most welcome.

I have just recently downloaded the app, it is brilliant, really user friendly and I love the duck popping up telling me the nasty companies trying to track me.

Great but scrolling freezes

Hi developers the app is great but I often experience the scrolling freezing but the rest of the app remains functional it’s just the scrolling itself. The only way to rectify it is by closing the app completely ie swiping up and holding in the middle of the screen and then re-opening. This is of course is really annoying and time consuming as I’ve lost all the tabs and websites that were open.

Can you please fix the scrolling issue?

Personal & Private

With so much Nefarious behaviour online by alleged respectable companies that provide search engines (mention no names) i am so glad that there is Responsible alternates.

I have been using DuckDuckgo for approximately one year now, occasionally at first but after a while it became constantly & consistently. I have deleted my account with the ‘other’ search engine completely now & only use this amazing one.

So if like me you value your privacy do yourself a favour and get DuckDuckgo ASAP.

I am so happy with this service i would give the company 6 stars if possible.

Lies !

Duck Duck ‘Don’t’ is connected to Google and that does save your history, even after you clear the data in the app. Out of all 10 devices tested the history was found in Chrome after deletion. Metadata scrutinised backs this up. It is NOT private, its a get around to fool those who think they are browsing anonymously. Google is buying up these companies due to provisions in the Patriotic Act. Do not download as data is sent from your phone in sleep mode. Or other devices. Should you believe any answer from DDG then more fool for you !

I have only just switched to DuckDuckGo as I read an article about google an what they can actually see an do an watch it sickened me at the thought of google being able to access just on me one person, the amount of info they have alone on myself is scary I don’t like that thought.. my daughter for a very long time has told me to be very careful with what I say an do through my phone? I was more concerned for my daughter thinking she was acting very cautious sometimes paranoid as she would turn her phone of when getting undressed or if she wanted to speak to me about something private her phone would be switched of but now after finding out what google can access just of myself my daughter isn’t the one that’s being to cautious.. I’ve noticed that everything an anything I talk about with my friends or something I listen to on the tv will for sure show up on my phone at some point that makes me think it was just a coincidence but it’s actually not there’s no such thing as a coincidence!! This made me want to switch over from google to DuckDuckGo...

Good, for unresponsive buttons !

Sometimes the button ( being too small, on screen ) are sometimes unresponsive and takes a lot of tapping before they do anything ! Other than that ? It’s very impressive tbh ! A Search Engine that has none of Google’s Antifa Algorithm’s, messing with search results

I love this app!

Although you may think this app is TRICKING US no it isn’t I had searched this app completely and the ad is telling the truth so if you are looking for a non creepy app that is literally the police on your phone your data you have come to the right place. The only minor thing about this is that when I looked at the images section of what I was searching they had very little images but they are quite new so this will hopefully be updated a lot I really recommend this app for you😁

I’m mean, why not?

This browsers works just as well as any other browser and provides added security and anti-tracking, just give it a try.

One improvement I could suggest would be for a keyboard to be there automatically if you open the app after all data has been deleted. At the moment it’s a blank screen with a search bar that you have to tap to get the keyboard up. Having to tap the search bar seems to be an unnecessary step.

Great Browser with tips

I came across the duck after buying a subscription to Nord VPN and a paid email service (Proton Mail which is also brilliant)Like many I had always used Google search and email and had no issues and actually admired Google for their innovation but sadly it got to the point that even I recognised exactly how much they they knew about me and often directed me in a particular manner which indicated how they scan read my emails and search history etc.

With frequent tips from the duck I now feel free and master of my own information lol

I’d like to start off by saying that DuckDuckGo is a very efficient and reliable search engine, and I would recommend it for people who want to protect their privacy and searches. I’ll give a few points for those who are unsure about installing DuckDuckGo:

Privacy is generally a thing valued by most people, DuckDuckGo ensures that you can keep this privacy.

There’s a quick way to clear everything in-app through pressing a button or closing the application.

Flexible and can be used as a search engine for applications beyond the original DDG app.

flaws:

Searches can take longer to load, though it is not too bad.

On mobile, cannot download images from the images tab, but instead need to go to the source of the image.

Other than these, I could not find many flaws with the app. I would, personally, give DuckDuckGo a 9.3/10.

Gotta improve but GETTING THERE

I’ll happily take a performance hit to stop Google. I use DDG in browser on laptop and iPhone. There are issues around image in searches returning as ‘blank’ - yet on google are fine. Smells like foul play by google somehow. Search quality isn’t perfect yet. Invest in your service, ask for payment even but you’ve got to improve constantly just to stand still. Maps is also an obvious issue. Like I said - I can forgive all that for privacy and to stick it to Google.

The best search engine

I’ve been happily using DuckDuckGo and spreading the word for years to friends who also love it. It is the best search engine, gives the information you want and not the information marketing wants you to see. The only downside is I miss the quack the duck made when opening the page which considering all the benefits this app offers, no tracking, no selling, privacy etc is a very tiny downside indeed. Thank you DuckDuckGo!
