What the title says

Rote memorisation
Can’t understand how this app is so highly rated.
1. Main concern is that it is rote memorisation; there is no explanation for the moves. You are supposed to just memorise them. Which means, especially as a beginner, I don’t actually develop as a chess player, and conclude lines in positions that I don’t understand.
2. Unable to reset progress. “Play the move you’ve learned” - it’s been 4 weeks since I opened the app, I don’t remember?? So then you have to guess, which if you guess incorrectly, you have now mentally reinforced the wrong move.
3. Why are you offering me to “update” lines when I accidentally deviate? Why are you offering me to change the line you are saying is the optimal line?
4. Often I want to study the position once the line is concluded, but once I have done so the board is automatically blurred for no reason whatsoever.
5. Some of the “beginner” lines put you in positions that are remarkably similar to those I’ve seen get annihilated in various YouTube videos, for example in Kings Pawn opening for black, you advise to just keep gobbling pawns all the way to their back rank. Meanwhile their pieces are opening up for a huge attack. Neglecting opening principles is not recommended for beginners by any of the professionals I watch.
6. Why is there a category for openings, and then a random “crushing” category? What is this? Are these better? More risky? Why have these lines been separated?

If you a decent at pattern recognition, this is a very good learning app that shall improve your chess game.

Lotus chess > Chessable
A first rate opening trainer and considerably cheaper than chessable’s courses. The ability to tailor openings to your preferences is a great addition as well. One feature I would love to see, however, is the option to go more in depth on specific lines.

A self proclaimed duolingo of chess
So far this has proven to be a superb learning tool by tapping into intuitive development via familiarity and repetition. If Duolingo is an effective tool for language education ( which it is), then this self-styled equivalent should be even more effective for honing chess opening patterns. I heard of it via Epic chess (James) and he wasn’t wrong to endorse it.
