Never buying Sony again

Bought multiple devices hoping for a good quality system but just useless for 3yrs to connect without using the app. Nothing can connect outside app connections so forget using any other device to play music through. No resets work, just a waste of money.

An App Stuck in the 2000s (and in Frozen Mode)

I use this app on an iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 26.0.1 and ULT Field 7. The app frequently freezes when it loses connection and tries to reconnect. When it does work, it looks outdated, like something from the early 2000s. It also has many unnecessary functions that make it feel overcomplicated.

Pointlessly complicated

All I want to do is listen to my music which I pay annually to sync on Match, but it gets harder and harder to find and play the music i actually own. If I wanted to stream I’d sign up to Apple Music but I don’t , I don’t want to be asked every 5 minutes if I’m sure, or for the streaming service I’ve opted not to pay for to always trump my music. I love so many of apples apps but this is by far the most unintuitive and most profit driven in feel.

Very disappointing app!

I’ve just paid £200 for a pair of earphones where I don’t know how to control the volume or customise the playback sound because the app is substandard. I have tried numerous times to connect the earphones to the app and just cannot get it to work. How can Sony produce such superior hardware and such substandard software?? Sony please sort this out as I’m losing out on so many features. I have a pair of Apple AirPods and connection is just seamless. Hugely disappointed

Improved the bass and sound of my speaker

This app has all the things you need to customise your speaker experience and more! Whether it is changing the sound eq to your liking or customisation the light show, everything is able to be customised! It can sometimes be tricky but you can figure it out with a google search! My only complaint is that this app is not available for anyone using a windows pc which means i am stuck with a 3rd party EQ and not full customisation of the speaker. For smartphones though, it runs perfectly

This app forced an update on my SRS-XB43 Bluetooth speakers and it ruined my device. Now the speakers just switches off randomly. Speakers were working well before the “update”. Uninstall this app while you can!

Unnecessary & broken bloatware - AVOID

I struggled to see the point of this app previously - it’s largely pointless bloatware, but since a recent update to the way it pairs speakers (I am forced to repair one of my speakers) it is now completely broken.

Despite following the instructions that are ‘required’ to pair the speaker with my phone and network, the app refuses to progress and complete the pairing progress.

This is despite the Bluetooth connection being established and the fact that I’m actually playing music through the speaker whilst writing this review on how the app is so broken that it says I haven’t yet paired the speaker.

Absolutely pointless bloatware, rendered even worse by the fact that it now doesn’t even fulfil its limited function at all!

Dated but gets the job done!

I’ve used this app for 4 years now and haven’t had an issue with usability! Stable and simple…

Now the downsides… the app is quite dated! Not having reviewed a UI update in over 4 years, it certainly is as basic as it gets, would love for Sony to show the same love that they show when making their hardware and redesign this app!

Apart from that though, it works perfectly fine.. though with minimal customisation!

Would also love to see some sort of equaliser within the app and just a nice facelift that Sony has been giving their other products

Had not used my Sony speaker SRS-X88 for a while and decided to download the Sony Music Centre app and update the speaker’s firmware. The update worked perfectly and the speaker is now back in use. Well worth using.

What’s the point in a £999 wifi speaker if it cuts out all the time? Sony need to re build this app so it’s really simple and quick to connect and it needs to not cut out from wifi all the time (it’s 1 metre from my fibre router!) nothing else in the house cuts out so why does my Sony srs speaker? Awful!

I’m currently stuck with this in my car as the stereo was already installed when I bought it. I thought it should be no issue because Sony has a decent reputation. So wrong! The only way I can connect my phone to the car is via a usb in the front of the head unit, and that only works for music. Calls still come straight from my phone speakers, there’s no apparent way to make it work through the steering controls either. I’ve spent literally hours trying to work out the trick to the Bluetooth connection so that it works more than once out of every 15 attempts. I think I found it… get a new stereo that doesn’t use this pathetic software. If zero stars was an option that’s what I’d rate it.

Definitely an improved app

I’ve never managed to get this app working properly in the past - ended up having to keep reinstalling, and had issues with multiroom.

However I’ve started using my Sony speakers again in my new house and the app is considerably better! I can now play via the network too which stops that annoying connection sound, plus lazily the speakers are left on standby so I don’t have to turn on. It’s still not as slick as I’d expect, but way better and essential if you have Sony speakers.

I haven’t found out how/if I can adjust the bass yet via the app, but I’d very much like to be able to do this please developers :)

Sony, please. You make such wonderful,

and good quality hardware items. I for on love my CMT-X5CDB unit. It’s sleek, good looking, stylish, and sounds great. It takes pride of place on my sideboard where it just sits looking cool, waiting to produce some lovely music, with good bass tones, at the touch of the unassuming and almost covert remote control.

So, for a companion app I am given Music Centre? This app couldn’t be more of an opposite to everything I wrote above. It either doesn’t connect to my unit, or once connected, will happily disconnect itself at random.

It is clunky, difficult to navigate, and isn’t intuitive at all.

It would make a very good first pass at a beta release for a work experience undergraduate doing their placement year with you.

It’s now 2021 and this really isn’t anything like the kind of quality that I would have expected from a company of your reputation and quality standards.

Please please please will you replace it with something that has been developed to help the user? A true companion app. And PLEASE do it very soon.

Connectivity Issues

It’s nearly all been said, this app looks like it was written in the 1990’s and behaves similarly. Frequently loses connection to my speaker and reconnecting is hit & miss.

The fact that Sony seem to be ignoring the issues confirms the arrogance & complacency of the company, an awful shame as the actual products are very good but let down by poor apps.

Utter Crap.

Just like the endless updates on the laptop that are supposedly so vital to improve the performance but in reality do the total opposite, this latest update has done the same for the speaker. It WAS paired with my laptop, and according to the Bluetooth info on said laptop still is, but when I play something it only comes through the inbuilt speakers. It’s also referring to my laptop as “Jericho”, a name I didn’t give it.

If the speaker or laptop just won’t function without this rubbish of an app and so forces you to have to have it, make it do what it’s supposed to and not just add to the inordinate amount of needless stress that already exists.

Or is that it’s main function? How can something be working OK and then an update totally screw it up? I despise the modern world with its so called advanced technology that is always at best just overpriced tacky trash, and it’s useless, unworkable garbage like this rancid garbage that makes it unbearable.

Give me an old fashioned boom box any day of the week.

Works fine but...

Works fine, probably a bit basic considering the giant Sony is but it does a job. I use it in the car connected to my Sony car stereo, the only real problem I experience is every time they connect I have to set 'Allow' on the phone, is very conducive to a hands free set up.

Simplicity is key. Really well made app

I have to say I was wincing at the idea of using a brand app for the speaker but this one is great. It has so many useful options that accentuate the speaker’s sound and features.

Some VERY harsh reviews on here. As someone who is very wary and easily put off based on reviews I had to write one. I was worried about parting with a big wad of cash for a speaker but this one was worth it and Sony have done a brill job here.

Everything else on the app works. The UI could definitely be streamlined a bit more. The settings should always be accessible at the top or on the top right hand corner.

Never in the history or apps has one as woeful as this utter nonsense been allowed to exist.

You HAVE to use it because it’s the only way to make use of the stereo pairing aspect of ZSRS speakers, but my god... if the app could remember from one minute to the next what was connected to the network that would be useful. Google home manages to find the speakers every time, however does not do stereo pairing... utter crap, please bin this and write a new one #sony

Expectations and Perceptions

Any positive reviews are warranted against a sea of one star reviews. Imagine how the developer feels reading them? When it does, it works adequately, it’s alright to tweak settings etc.

What underscores the negative reviews is the impression it gives, because it’s SONY. If a massive company like this is on the very periphery of commitment, it just instils a lack of trust that the speaker you have made an investment towards.

It’s sad to see them failing at the details when so many attentive names are entering the speaker space like SONOS. This dated looking clunky app is a representation of SONY’s approach to the future and that’s sad to me.

Unable to setup speaker

I recently upgraded my speaker to the Sony SRS-XB32 portable speaker but live in a house where other family members have an SRS-XB30 and an SRS-XB22.

One of the main reasons I purchase the Sony was the big sell point that Sony uses regarding wireless multi-speaker connectivity and your ability to ‘Enjoy the same song, multipled, with Wireless Party Chain. Connect up to 100 wireless speakers, with BLUETOOTH technology and the music lights sync-up so everyone dances to the same beat. Set a random pattern or set the lights to blink in a circle.’ (Quote from Sony’s website).

Unfortunately, aside being happy overall with the speakers performance, the quality of this app is really where the Sony customer experience falls down. The app is clunky and fails to detect the speakers the vast majority of the time - and that’s just in trying to control one speaker. I’ve been unable to sync up the 3 I own never mind the theoretical 100 that Sony pitches with this product. Disappointing from a huge tech name like Sony.

Really requires an update especially given the similar reviews and an a 1-2 star App Store rating. Hope it’s updated soon or I’d be looking at a Sonos or other brand which promotes wireless connectivity in future.

For such good speakers and Sony being a giant company you’d expect an amazing companion app to fluidly and seamlessly adjust and altar settings and preferences to the user’s request however this app is extremely poor and slow, it feels like an app made in 2002 thats never been tended to or refreshed and upgraded. I am actually disgusted that Sony would publish an app of this bad of quality to be honest. Constant connection issues, speaker constantly duplicates itself on the device list causing errors and a pathetic excuse of ‘troubleshooting’, I even get to the point when my speaker will not change volume via phone or speaker because the app has gone wrong in some sort of way as per usual, then, after a little while, you obviously turned your phone up to full volume and when the speaker/app finally decides to kick in and work again, it blasts out at 100% volume out of nowhere or whatever volume you left it on hence because the volume mixer had frozen or broke. Fix it Sony C’mon its 2019 for crying out loud.

Since trying this appalling app, my system will no longer ‘turn off’! It goes into standby mode only! The fan keeps running, and trying the factory reset does nothing. Expect a lot more from Samsung and gravely let down

Terrible application! as an avid user of apple due to its easy to navigate and clear UI I thought I would give some Samsung speakers a try, the whole process from installation to app use is completely un user friendly. Maybe it works but you need to actually explain how this works not just expect people to know. I have connected the device multiple times and the app won’t even allow me to go to the next screen to use the full features of my sounds bar and sub. This needs urgent attention and redesign.

Purchased the monster MHC-V90DW and downloaded this app to see if it really complimented it. To be honest, it’s decent. Works well on my iPad, ie Bluetooth, but can’t seem to connect to my Samsung bluetooth, but interestingly has a lot more supported apps. Yes, it is chunky and dated, only bass level and no treble level, but is a useful for what you basically need. An update would be useful by the looks of things. Hopefully Sony sees our views and act on it.

This is the worst App if it’s kind I have come across. I thought Sony would have provided a quality app but no. I have tried to group two speakers the SRS XB20 and SRS XB41 but although they are both connected by Bluetooth to my phone the app consistently tells me they need set up and aren’t. I can see why this app has such poor reviews, so different with Bose app. That is the quality I expect. Sadly it seems Sony has taken its customers for granted and will eventually lose out because of it unless it mends it ways.

Functionality taken away!

So this app wasn’t great in the first place, but at least I could do the basics of controlling my amp from my phone. Now, after only 2 years support, Sony have decided to remove the STR-DN1080 completely from the app!! I wouldn’t have updated the app if I’d known this! The amp

Is still advertised as being Wifi controlled!! No support, no communication from Sony...they have even deleted all the forum posts regarding this issue online!! With my current set up I now have an expensive lump of electronics I can’t do anything with. Absolutely horrible behaviour from Sony!!

When it works .....

....good sound from speaker - but the previous reviewer about the buggy app is right. It is not stable - image keeps fading out and shows several pictures of the speaker that all need connecting (but you can’t) - also keeps going black and closing. Speaker good, app poor. Please update ASAP to correct the app performance! The days of turning it on and off again ... and again .. should be well over by now!!

Full of bugs

Im using this for my Sony SRS-XB21. This app is great when it works, but half the time it doesn't work - it keeps saying I need to connect my device, even though its already connected and playing music. Then when I try to connect it says there was a problem and wont let me. Its really annoying. Ive seen other reviews highlighting the problem, so its not just me. How can a firm as established as Sony have such a buggy app?? It baffles me!

I downloaded this app thinking it’s quick and easy to use Hell NO!!! When you connect the speaker to the app it says troubleshooting and cuts the app off every time even doe I tried everything to step by step to make it work it’s not working period. Come on SONY what’s going on with this app it’s not working period ? HELP Please I love my speakers but I need this app as a remote to work so I can change the lights music eq. Etc .... Negative improvements

Having multiple SRS speakers the multi room option is paramount, it no longer works. The original Songpal app was superb and did everything easily and effectively. Since Music Center has arrived the functionality has steadily deteriorated to the point that it only works with individual speakers, not what I bought them for and really quite ridiculous given Sony’s claims.

Why all the negative reviews. It works perfect for me

I don’t understand how so many people are having trouble with this app. I’ve installed it on my iPhone 8+ which has the latest software. I’m using it with my Sony SRS-XB31. I think the app is brilliant. I wasn’t going to bother downloading it after reading all the negative reviews. I decided to give it a go. You’ve got nothing to lose. If you don’t like it then you can just uninstall it. I can adjust all the settings to my personal preference and it saves them. I think it’s a really good app and I’m glad I got it. Thanks Sony!!

5.11 update has broken the app!!!

It was working fine, until I updated to version 5.11 on my iPhone 6+ and now it is terrible! I tried deleting and reinstalling, rebooting my phone, all made no difference.

Every letter when you type in the library search field takes ages to register, as if it is in slow motion, but even worse it is not picking up all of the songs in my iTunes library - useless! Navigating around the whole of the app is jerky, slow and laggy, everything was working fine until you released this version, clearly something has gone very wrong with this update. I’m very disappointed and worried that, having spent thousands of pounds on several of these srs speakers, I now find that I can’t use them until you fix this mess. I can’t even roll back to the previous version which was working. Come on Sony, someone please sort this out as a matter of urgency!!!

Connected to my MHC-GT5D via Bluetooth

Bought this karaoke to p*ss off my neighbour who was making ridiculous amount of noises at night time so hooked it to my tv, didn’t realise u can connect to your iPhone via Bluetooth app. Works a dream, connect to my music library. He doesn’t make any noise now.

Useless

This app is useless. I bought a Sony SRS - XB41 wireless speaker.

You connect your speaker to your iPhone or iPad. No problem there.

When you open the app, it shows you’re connected and you can use all the features fine.

Say, you flick off the app to use another app, when you come back to the song app,

there will be another device which says “ Needs to be setup “.

So now you have 2 devices showing. The one you’re connected and the other saying need to set up.

The connected one will be greyed out. If you click the connected device, the app will attempt to connect again even though my music is still playing through the speaker.

It then says please connect to Bluetooth.

Whilst in this state, you’re unable to communicate with the speaker using phone.

You can’t lower volume, skip track etc etc.

When it says please connect the speaker to Bluetooth, I go settings, Bluetooth and then look at the available devices.

As expected, it shows my speaker is connected to my phone.

If I select the device which is already connected, nothing happens as it’s already connected.

Now, when I go back to the Sony app, it’s working.

Basically, everything I leave the app it’s working, when I go back the app is saying need to set up.

I have to constantly keep going Bluetooth settings to reconnect even if it’s still connected & playing my music.

Get a grip Sony.

Very very poor.

Impossible to get past accepting terms and conditions

If an app wants me to read Sony, Google, Gracenote and do not know how many more legal terms, some even in Japanese before being able to use it and not able to get the checkbox ticked I give up. Which is a shame as I have several Sony products. It is same lack of consumer centric service I have experienced before trying to get money back as part of their offer when buying expensive TV. In the end you do not want a Sony anymore....

Scrolling through tracks

It would be amazing if we was able to scroll through a mix when connected to Bluetooth stereo, I have mixes on my usbs and I want to scroll through half way on the mix but I have to hold the skip button on my Sony radio to fast forward and it takes forever please sort this would be amazing

Limited and dysfunctional

I want to be clear, below is from my experience and thus is an opinion, other people’s experiences may vary.

Even when a device is active and functioning perfectly via a Bluetooth connection, the app does not connect to the device and requires the device to be turned off and on for the app to work.

Even when the app is working it offers extremely limited options. Don’t waste your time with this app.

I use Apple Music unlimited and with my Sony Bose SRS-XB20 my phone and iPad and laptop connect perfectly to the speaker using AUX and Bluetooth. The devices are perfectly functional and no app is required.

The app offers no addition (which work) that can improve the experience.

Really?!

I have been considering multi-room system for a while. I invested in a HT-MT500 and 1 ZR5 to start with. Happy with the sound produced BUT the app... really?!.. how can you provide something so basic and limited?

The app, doesn’t find the speakers all the time, you cannot manage easily separate room and separate music, The Music app from apple is not seeing the speakers, tune in same, sound cloud same.

Everything looks old fashion and limited in term UX. I’m really considering put 200£ more and change for Sonos.. unless you are telling me that a major update is coming.. are you? When? With what changes?

Great app could use more functionality

Bought gtk-xb90 speaker the speaker is amazing.

The app is very good connected to the speaker is easy and quick.

Improvements / features :

Ability to control individual lighting of the speaker maybe in the form of a photo of the speaker where you can change different lighting areas.

Also would be nice to have the option to turn the lights to solid without the flashing.

Complete waste of money on speakers

Bought 3 srs-xb20 to use multi room as told they were a 'good all rounder'. Completely unusable. Why is it so hard to connect them every single time you want to use them??? When I eventually manage to get them to work half the time one has a delay so you can't use them in same area. Tried another app and still doesn't work. going back to the shop tomorrow and will be exchanged for a better brand. Expected more from Sony. Won't be buying anything of yours again.

Disappointing from Sony

I purchased the BDP-S6700 Blu Ray Player and then invested in the HT-NT5 soundbar with the SRS-ZR5 rear surround speakers for multi room and surround sound which does work, however if you want to change from surround sound to multi room the app keeps dropping speakers and the amount of time spent trying to get things going again is a nightmare. The app and hardware in today’s world should connect with no fuss. Sony you really need to get this app talking to the hardware no nonsense fashion. Disappointed considering the amount of money I have invested in your products.
