Unable to complete peer feedbacks

Without a doubt it is a great service and an app that provides opportunities to continue or re-start education!

Anyway, my concern using this app on iPad is that whenever I am doing a peer feedback, I cannot complete it for the final person. After attempts, it keeps telling me to “Try again in a few minutes”.

It would be a massive help if this bug can be resolved soon.

Good content but this is a great use case for the iPad unfortunately the app doesn't support basic keyboard shortcuts such as pressing space to pause/play. It would be great if the developper could work on supporting these features.

Loading forever, unusable

I’m sorry to say that it just does not work for me. Everything takes forever to load. Upon submitting something it freezes and I have to quit the app. Now when I load up the app I can’t even change the page or do anything, it’s been stuck on the same page with the loading sign. I uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail. I hope this gets fixed soon. I can’t say for the design or ease of use of the app because I’ve barely been able to use it.

Will always log-out when using SSO

There are two frustrating things about the app:

- any audio files forces you to open it in a pop-up browser which means if you’re on the Tube or Train, you can’t continue with this.

- if you’re using SSO from organisations, it will be super reliable in logging you out every single time, which just makes the app on the phone unusable cause no one wants to go through that process several times a day.

Between these two issues, the app is pretty unusable.

Great features but loose account

The app frequently forget the current use account.

What’s the point of having a course when you can’t get help, when something doesn’t work? I was doing the course online then switched to the app. I submitted assignments but on the app it doesn’t even register that I did. Also I paid for the certificate. The app doesn’t show that either. This is VERY FRUSTRATING. There doesn’t seem to be any customer service. There also doesn’t appear to be tutors who actually mark the work. I don’t mind peer reviews but please make the final decision be from professional staff. This is my first Coursera course. It’s not turning out to be a pleasant experience.

Why offer offline and then not work

Love the concept but needs a lot of work

Of course it is a great idea, but the app is incredibly fickle, sometimes it doesn’t register that I have watched a video, and just now when I wanted to check out my course… my course is gone from my courses page? But then when I search for the course if says I am enrolled… things like this make using coursera a bit unpleasant, but otherwise it’s a good app.

Ancient Philosophy

While you are always conscious that others might not recognise the achievement of completing a course, I have to say the Ancient Philosophy course I did was absolutely brilliant.

The lecturer explains things so clearly and in such an engaging manner. It really feels like a university short course… because it is.

Quizzes on iPad don’t show or format images properly

I have to use the web version to see all the figures in quizzes, as the iPad app either doesn’t format or place them properly or shows white space or sometimes images from previous sections.

Basically as it stands it’s impossible to complete the tests in the iPad app.

For reference, the course I’m doing now is Machine Learning by Andrew Ng.

Expected better.

I can’t believe how shoddy the Coursera mobile app is. Its basic menu screen can’t handle multiple courses without randomly shuffling the units around. Then, it has the dumb note taking idea of taking video clips. But worse than that, if you download videos to work through offline, it can lose your progress. The developers who put this app together should just die of shame.

1. Update to remember manually set video quality between videos.

2. Update to remember full screen mode (i.e. hidden Notes | Transcript | Attachments split screen) between videos.

It’s so frustrating having to manually reset the above two setting every video.

Poor With Intermittent Internet

Quizzes often load the same image for each of the multiple choice options, whereas the website does not suffer from this defect. Furthermore, after changing network the app gives unhelpful error messages which are only resolved by logging out and back in again.

Coursera itself is great, but using the App is not: transcripts not available, missing section, and technical support constantly assumes using a PC. Really disappointing, took six weeks to get help: so far not resolved issues. Also cannot change language in app.

I am a big fan and regular user of Coursera. Unfortunately video can’t be viewed on my phone since last update.

Excellent idea, somewhat poorly realised.

I am currently on the Google course via DWP.

Firstly, all elements of the course should be available in the app, but I have an assignment which requires me to go to a laptop because I cannot do the assignment on my iPad. Annoying.

Secondly, in the reading section I am told I need to buy the certificate on completion. I want that certificate. So I follow the link down the rabbit hole. This ends in endless waffle without stating the price. Just state the price. Don’t be coy about it. I do not mind paying for things, I do object to wasting time searching for information that should be clearly stated.

“Coursera’s” app could be better

I’m taking one of the full master programs that are being taught through Coursera. I’ve also done many individual courses independently. Although the website works great most of the time with very little, if any, issues, the ios app isn’t that great. Courses don’t appear on the app as soon as they become available on my dashboard on the website. Some courses that I have on my dashboard have not appeared at all on the ios app. Additionally, the app doesn’t reflect the progress correctly of courses that it did manage to show. I think these should be simple and standard functionalities the app should do and will give 2 stars for now, but look forward to see how these issues will be reaolved.

Crash all the time and course videos not loading

It shows error 8 out of 10 times when start up.

Half of the time shows error while playing course video.

Doesn’t work offline. When the course is fully downloaded, the content takes forever to be loaded and played. Not sure why. And more half of the time it shows error.

Not worth it

After spent countless hours doing this course, after spend weekends on their exercises I am unable to finish my specialization because of 2.5% on an exercise because some student decided that my answers were 1 in 5. I am not perfect, but I do my best to learn, I find totally unfair that I can’t finish the course that I out so much worm because some person decides that my answers are useless.

If I knew, what I know today I will never buy this thing…..

They call that feeling of completion, but that is total lie, it feels like a total failure after countless hours of your work just to unable to finish the marathon when is just 10meters to finish.

Total waste.

Since returning to the Coursera app on my phone several weeks ago after using the website exclusively recently, video playback has become horrifically unreliable. I have to “swipe up” and close the app after each video to ensure the next in the series plays. Several specialisations also report an error when I try to view their details from the search screen.

Introduction to particle physics

Needless to say this is a somewhat difficult subject but am very motivated and passed the first grade exam with 100% only to grind to a halt at the second video. The tutor does not have English as a first language and has a very heavy accent coupled with speaking so fast that l am finding it impossible to follow. Am so disappointed and will continue using the diagrams and hope it will be enough.

Airplay 2 does not work with sound

Horrible. Just spent £600 on a smart tv to stream my course to a big screen and work on my laptop simultaneously. Only video transmits - no audio.

Have tested with Udemy, YouTube, every other video app under the sun and they work with video AND audio with my iPhone 12, so it’s isolated to Coursera.

Such a horrifically made app. When will this be fixed?

Quiz not showing pictures!

I love Coursera as a website, but I’m disappointed by the app that I try to use during train journey. The quiz is not showing the pictures, and some include key info for me to pick the right option, so I had to skip. Quiz is an important part of learning, so I’m compromising my learning experience because of the flaw in the app. Please fix this!

Not finding my enrolled course

It works well in general, there something wrong though. After a while, “my courses” tab is empty displaying “explore” button as if I have never enrolled to a course. The last time it happened I fixed this issue by updating the app, but the issue is back.

Style of teaching and functionality of the app is very dated! This course could do with a serious revamp to bring it up to date. Listening to someone talking through verb tables - very dull and uninspiring! You could take some tips from something like Duolingo!!

It’s easy to go for junk food, now more than ever with streaming!

So instead of paying Netflix or sky, how about getting a free education in everything topic you can imagine, and be taught by fabulous lecturers who share their enthusiasm for their specialist subject?

And if you are job hunting, you can get a certificate to demonstrate your new found knowledge.

The perfect app for bite size learning. If like me you struggle with some concepts, then the video replay is the perfect, most patient teacher.

So you have a choice, like Neo from the Matrix, stay with junk food (and stay plugged in like a battery) or open your mind with some free brain food (and find your true potential).

The app works really well on my phone and ipad, obviously not all the video and course material quality is created equally however this is incumbent on the course providers to maintain

Unable to switch from Coursera for Students to normal

The second screen appears automatically after a second and there is no option to ‘Switch program’ on that second screen. Tapping the Coursera logo does nothing. During that first 1 second, the ‘Switch program’ link brings up the menu showing two programs but it does not react to tapping it, and immediately comes the second screen, covering the first. I don’t want to write any review but there is no way to contact you.

Stunning presentation, I was really absorbed into this and finished the lesson having felt I had just whizzed around the Worlds mountains.

With regards to the test I usually struggle with multi choice but I was successful since I went with my new knowledge and own knowledge, trusting myself, if that makes sense.

I have completed my first course on this and it was really engaging and enjoyable. Only problem is the app seems to work oddly on Apple software, yet was perfect on my phone. Customer service is astounding. Would recommend to anyone looking to expand their knowledge!

Continuation frustration

Something I’ve not worked out - when I come back to the course it doesn’t bring me to where I’d got to last time. I’m a time ‘poor’ mother, trying to get back to where I was last time make it feels like I’m wasting my learning time on just getting to where I left off.

Video speed

Good app, but its annoying when I need to change the speed of the video lesson. I have to repeatedly click through all the speeds before I reach the one I need, and go through the whole process again when I need to go back to normal speed (especially problematic when on a music course!)

The cousera tool is truly wonderful for convenient learning. The app however can be a little frustrating especially when working from a mobile device. Overall, the concept and contents available on coursera are top notch.

I’m currently studying the introduction to Philosophy and so far I have found the structure, subject matter and presentation excellent. Primarily I am completing the modules on my MacBook but the option to use the app is excellent when mobile.

Eats up mobile data

The app ate up my 5GB mobile literally over night - the usage showed that it used over 5GB roaming data (I had no WiFi because I was in a hotel abroad without good WiFi connection). It seemed to have just stopped after it had no internet available any more. The option ‘download on WiFi only’ was enabled; that clearly did not work.

Writing a ticket to the support to making them aware that the app downloads huge amounts of data over mobile network did not work. The interface was not responsive. I wonder who coded this buggy app.

Pathetic teaching

The lecturer that I have been assigned to does not know how to teach anyone anything. This is an introduction to engineering mechanics that I am doing but he does not understand that, he does not explain anything in detail, he expects you to know everything already and it is really getting on my nerves. He is a pathetic teacher and the impression that he has made on me has influenced me not to carry on with this site Coursera and to try with all my being to keep my friends and family from coming to this excuse for education!!!

Updates keep breaking things

Updates recently have resulted in the app being unusable at best and frustrating otherwise.

In this latest update it crashes during the exam and when I go to repeat the exam it is just blank. I also have a peer assignment sitting incomplete as I have no way to mark my peers (another crash after I marked one peer, but I need three).

In the previous update the course content was (badly) out of order/sequence, (surprise, you are studying the wrong content).

I’m on a paid course with deadlines. Its not good.

Great content, terrible app

I’ve been using coursera for a few years and the app just continues to get worse :( it seems like every update introduces more bugs. I’ve tried reporting it through the app, but of course the bug reporting page is broken(!)

I’d say in every half hour session of using the app to study I spend about 5-10 minutes fighting with bugs before I can get a video (or the right video) to play.

But despite that, if you’re willing to fight through the inconvenience the actual course content is really good! It’s a shame some of it is paywalled now as I’m not likely to pay for it when it’s so hard to consume.

App Corrected Its Wrongs

Edit: after my previous review, there were several bug fixes and I was notified that they had resolved my issues. All in all, I’m very impressed by the Coursera app as it is now. Great content and a reliable app.

Somehow, the app has taken a step backward in the latest update. With the last version, I could depend on this to function well in offline mode. With the latest update, any use offline will eventually log me out and request I log back in. Since I’m in the tube or on a plane with no service, the app becomes useless. Other apps have this same flaw that somehow passes testing. Also, the latest update drains my battery very quickly. With an iPhoneSE I go from 50% to dead in 20 minutes, where I typically last a day and a half or so without the app in use. Sadly, this app is as bad as Udacity’s now.

Bugs bugs bugs

Latest update killed the ability to watch videos offline.

You download the video, pop one open in the subway, next thing you know at the end of the video you are automatically logged out of the app (with no ability of logging back in there being no connectivity in the subway...). Even worse, your downloaded videos are cancelled and you have to download the whole pack again.

The Apple TV app cannot display certain videos. A red icon appears in the bottom left angle of the blank screen - maybe a codec issue? How can the app not be able to show a video, what’s the whole point of the Apple TV app?

Unusable with no internet

App allows you do download courses to view offline, but when you actually try to view it and it has trouble of connecting to the internet, it said session expired, and then logs you out. After connecting to the internet (via tethering on mobile) I found out that all downloaded courses were deleted. This happened 2nd time this week. It’s really unreliable if you want to pre-download courses to watch offline on plane or train.

Good but some bugs let me prefer the website

I love the possibility to download the video for offline viewing but I’ve faced a bug: opening the app in airplane mode I couldn’t see any course, so impossible to access the downloaded video :(

I faced a bug with quizzes too: while looking at the quiz sometimes the underlying video resume automatically!

An Amazing Resource

The Coursera app is very smooth and easy to use. All courses come with tons of different resources, videos, lecture notes, transcripts, exercises, so you can learn in different ways at different times. There are a huge volume of courses often by the best universities and lecturers in the world.

The Coursera app is everything that the internet was supposed to be, an exemplar of modern technology in spirit and delivery.

Missing features available on a browser

Very straightforward interface, very easy to use. Unfortunately doesn't give features such as the lecture notes that are available on a browser. Also there's a problem with forums: it only shows some of the ones I've written to. Gives the impression that I was the only person there!

Tried to uninstall and use Safari but it insists on re-installing the app and blocks signing in to the web page in the meantime. So f.frustrating.

Easy to use and great for eager people

I’m a old Coursera user going back to 2013 when I started to undertake my first course. One of the best experiences!

Back then was very basic, but now is a complete game changer. I used to be a military police and unfortunately I didn’t had much time to start a bachelor degree as I was mostly all time involved in exercises and always on duty, with Coursera I decided to invest my spare time with certifications and later a specialisation to extend my professional knowledge.

It has been quite handy and useful to have such achievements to demonstrate skills and competencies.

Totally worth of giving a try!
