Description

NightCap Camera is a powerful app that takes amazing low light and night photos, videos and 4K time lapse. Long exposure produces beautiful photos in low light and unique Astronomy modes capture the stars, Northern Lights (Aurora) and more!
Do you find your photos and videos dark and grainy in low light? NightCap will help by unlocking the full potential of your iPhone or iPad's camera.
AI camera control makes it easy by automatically setting optimum focus and exposure for a brighter, clearer shot. All you need to do is hold steady and tap the shutter. If you prefer manual control then instant gesture based adjustment is always available, and special camera modes give you DSLR like results. You can even shoot photos, videos and time lapse in black and white if you want to.
Try Long Exposure mode for amazing motion blur effects and reduced image noise in low light. NightCap has an ISO Boost feature that allows 4x higher ISO than any other app, producing much brighter low light photos with low noise in Long Exposure mode!
Light Trails mode preserves moving lights - ideal for moving traffic at night, fireworks or light painting.
These modes are stunning when combined with HD or 4K time lapse!
There are 4 dedicated astrophotography camera modes. Stars Mode is ideal for a starry sky or Northern / Southern Lights (Aurora), or leave your device capturing in Star Trails Mode and watch the stars paint circles in the sky! There are also modes for easy photography of the International Space Station (ISS) and meteors (shooting stars).
Visit nightcapcamera.com for tutorials.
Features:
• Video recording with special Night Mode and full manual control.
• Time lapse recording with adjustable speed, long exposure and light trails support and up to 4K resolution on iPhone 6s or newer or 1080p HD on older devices.
• Aidie, a fully automatic AI camera operator chooses the optimum camera settings for you automatically, meaning brighter, clearer photos in low light with less risk of blurring the shot. All you need to do is hold steady and tap the shutter.
• AI enhanced focusing in very low light for fast, reliable focus.
• Automatic camera modes for Meteors (shooting stars), ISS (International Space Station), stars and star trails make these difficult tasks easy.
• Innovative manual camera controls designed for photographers: intuitive gesture-based control of exposure, ISO, focus and even white balance. Simply swipe to adjust.
• Long Exposure mode: Capture detailed, noise-free low light shots.
• Light Trails mode: Perfect for light painting and even astronomy: photograph star trails with unlimited exposure time!
• ISO Boost allows up to 4x higher ISO than any other app.
• Light Boost instantly boosts brightness while preserving image detail.
• Noise Reduction Mode helps reduce image noise.
• 8x Zoom control (camera-style for easy, smooth zoom).

This has really helped me with my night time photography and introduction into astrophotography. A really good app I would recommend to anyone. Very user friendly too with excellent tutorials.

Useless app

2023-11-05
This app is absolutely useless, especially if you try to take pictures at low light, even at dusk. The photos come out very dark and unbelievably noisy. I tried to take pictures of Aurora, had to delete all of them. It was good I took some with original camera app on iPhone 14. I wonder how this scammer still is not kicked out of AppStore.

Night cap is fantastic! With it I can produce better qualities of astrophotographies! No matter planets, moon or deep sky targets, Night Cap is definitely a must-have app to take photos of them! Though I don’t think it can actually take photos of galaxies or diffuse nebulas because they are too faint. But the photos of open clusters and globular clusters are solid! However, it would be even better if it support .RAW format

I've used this on the moon to photograph it alongside Pollux and Venus, however, I was wondering if it was possible to get any detail from other planets by zooming in by 8x. For example Jupiter, I'd love to know if it's moons would become more visible by zooming in using this camera.

This app is so good for capturing spectacular firework photographs, or the International Space Station streaking across the sky! I’ve had the app for a good few years, and the developer keeps it supported and updated. If you’re thinking about getting this app - just get it! It’s that good!

Version 9.8.1
Just got an iPhone 12 Pro and was blown away by native app and night mode.
Decide to buy NightCap to see how it compared. I’ve got some great night time/Star pics from both native and NightCap, images do have diff qualities between them.
Still trying out NightCap to it’s full potential, but I do find it quite slow at times, even though it’s on an iPhone 12 Pro? There are long delays between changing exposure for example and then the live view updating and also when switching between modes.
Dev, any reasons why it would be slow at times?
Looking forward to fully testing diff modes.

The various modes are great for astrophotography and for low light scenes.
I have used it a lot to capture the ISS and various meteor showers and star trails.

But would it be possible to get RAW support?
Also would it be possible to add a feature that follows stars artificially? ie, crop the image to a specific section of the screen and rotate and follow the stars (can be custom settings to get the speed right) this way it’s a fake motorised mount but would allow for multiple exposures if the sky.
Other than the above two requests it works great.

I don’t normally leave reviews for apps but I was so impressed with this app that I thought it was worth it. I’ve tried various low light photography apps over the years and haven’t been that impressed with the results. This app changed all that. It’s very easy to navigate around, clear instructions, cheap (£2.99 in the UK) and really great results. I couldn’t ask for any more than that. Definitely one of my favourites!

If you own the iPhone 11 Pro then the stock camera app performs better than this.
I’ve really tried to give it a good chance. But without exception, every shot is worse than can be achieved using the standard camera app. The iPhone 11 Pro has great low-light imaging and this app clearly cannot so anything to enhance it. If anything it’s way worse than the stock app. Disappointed, but also chuffed to know just how good the stock app really is!

Well worth the price, I’ve managed to take some great photos I didn’t think would be possible with my phone and all with minimal technical effort leaving me to focus on being more creative. Disappointed that Apple would allow apps like this to exist...sure £2.99 isn’t worth worrying about but it literally does nothing...couldn't even capture more than a few stars in Kielder Observatory (the darkest place in the UK) on a perfect clear night with the sky littered with stars....using what’s supposed to be the star setting.

That’s not intended to deprecate any of the other excellent long exposure apps out there, but if you are looking to take night sky shots NightCap produces visibly better results. A clear interface with a good layout, which let’s face it is important when you’re scrabbling around in the dark, NightCap makes a tricky process straightforward but offers enough control to let the user make informed choices. Apart from anything else, this is a fun app to use.

I bought this app purposefully to get photos of northern lights on my recent trip to Iceland. I read the reviews and this app had the most good reviews so thought I’d pay also liked how could do time lapse. But was VERY disappointed, I read the instructions and followed them plus watching tutorials, when I went out it wouldn’t even take photos of the stars. The night northern lights came and the app didn’t capture it once. I re-read the instructions and tried again and got nothing.

I own a lot of camera apps, been buying them for years. However this App has been my mainstay App for low light photography for years! Now however, thanks to the incredible power of the iPhone 11 Pro the potential for this App will be unbelievable for a smartphone. I am sure they will take full advantage of it soon. In the meantime it’s been updated to take advantage of the extra. camera in the Pro and I can’t wait to try it out.
iPhone apps come and go when developers lose interest in updating them but I have received one free update after another from this developer, well done!

A gem of an app that not only does what it says but exceeds all expectations, I have captured the ISS fly over , constellations and have loads of fun experimenting with the pushing the limitations of the iPhone . I think it uses a type of clever, on the fly stacking process so it works much more effectively than other apps offering long exposure, meaning the image remains vivid with minimal noise whilst you can see areas of light like stars etc ‘ develop’ onto the image as it exposes. Other apps I have tried have been laggy , unresponsive and produce ugly , noise riddled images. 10 out of 10 and highly recommend it!

No matter what I tried I just couldn’t get a shot when I was standing on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere and the stars were spectacular.
My phone was on a mount so it was rock steady and absolutely pitch black shots was all I got
My cousin using a Experia z2 premium got some decent shots with her stock software.
I tried it in a dim room and it does boost the light but it needs a small light source in the first place.
Should have a trial for everyone to test this app before spending their money to be sure it works for their phone.

I can’t actually work our why some people are saying the app is no good. I have an iPhone 8 Plus and I’ve just done a time lapse of the stars and caught a satellite cruising across the sky. Footage is on Facebook and everyone loves it. I think this is a great app and one I’m taking with me wild camping to the summit of Scafell Pike next week.

Bought this purely on the off chance we saw the Northern lights and we were lucky enough to see them. Got the most amazing pictures and the best money I spent all holiday. Every single person on our tour was jealous of my pics and think lots of them downloaded it too!

Are these paid for reviews???

I don’t know if these reviews are paid for or not, but it feels like we are not using the same app!?
This was a complete waste of money. I was on holiday in Iceland and tried the many different settings and capture modes and none of them produced a decent quality photograph of the northern lights...
A woman on the tour with us got a crystal clear photograph with WhatsApp’s “night mode” camera which was 100 times better than mine. Very disappointed and not happy at all with my purchase. I am removing the app today and won’t be using it again. Will try to figure out how to have the purchase refunded.
In summary the pictures were not clear and WhatsApp’s camera does a better job.

This is without doubt the best low light camera app on the App Store. The ability to collect light in low level light conditions is incredible. The app can gather light on conditions other camera apps will either give a very dark fuzzy blur or no discernible detail.
The app offers a multitude of different shooting styles such as light trails, long exposure amongst others. It also includes some very clever like collection algorithms to further enhance Photos in lowlight level conditions.
There is a huge number of options to choose from making this ideal for Astro photography or shooting in extreme low level conditions.

Having not taken my camera Mount Teide, Tenerife, one of the best stargazing spots in the world I put all my hope in this app to be able to capture the stars for me, as I'd bought and downloaded I'd seen a star mode/light trail mode and star trail mode. NONE worked in the slightest. Had a completely pitch black area, no light pollution what so ever, and my photos still turned out a solid black colour, no stars not nothing, useless.
I'm aware of the limitations of iPhones camera for night time photography, but to claim this as a Star Mode app is just scandalous.
I've never been one to want 2 quid back, but this is the most ripped off I've ever felt, and I go to QPR matches..
EDIT - I have received a response from the developing team, sending me to a gallery of images taken with the app. There are some good images on there.
I'm not quite sure why I did not get the same results, I can only guess to put it down to an issue with my phone.
I won't use the app again, as I will bring my dslr all other places, but I will raise my review to 3 stars assuming these results in the gallery are legitimate.

I had been waiting for the update to provide full support for the iPhone 7 Plus and not only has it arrived in style, the developer also added new functionality at no extra cost. The app works so well too. I have created amazing light trails, silky water shots. Shots of the stairs and for a laugh even duck trails which looked cool. In my mind if you're serious about photography you really need this app. I have tried and own many many others but this one works the best. Really pleased with the latest update 👍
