IOS version

I've used the Rockfax app since it started and impressed with the loyalty payment I still pay. Not many companies keep the price the same for those that joined early. The app is impressive. I've used all over the UK and abroad. The topos are clear and at the usual Rockfax standard. Parking and map detail is great too. If logging a climb is important with you the ability to do that is easy. Guess only issue is adoption of this sort of system. I wouldn't normally carry my phone on a climb. So this works brilliantly for me on single pitch climbs. I still take photos of multi pitch route descriptions with a proper camera as that is nearly always with me. But that's a personal opinion.

This really works!

I’ve been climbing 30 years so am very experienced with using book-style guide books. But now I’ve tried the Rockfax App and used it to visit a new crag and revisit one I’ve not been to for years I will wholeheartedly recommend it. Such a time saver.

Southern sandstone

This app is useless now it doesn’t show the English grades for southern sandstone. This is not sport climbing. Most of the anchors are off trees and there is no leading. Most importantly they were put up as English grades routes and some muppet from Rockfax sat down and converted everything to French without ever climbing most of the routes! Crucifix harder than Lager Shandy?! Clueless.

Great app with some potential killer developments

I used to buy the printed books and they still have a place, for instance on a bright sunny day when your phone screen is hard to see and books don’t run out of battery.
That being said this app really is great with tons of detailed information.
However.. There are some features in the printed books that aren’t mirrored in the app. I often use the “Destination Planner” page which shows very clearly the grade spread for a particular crag compared to those within the area. This way you can quickly find a crag that has a good spread for the level your group is at. Having something like this in the app would really aid planning around location filtered by climbing level and style.
As another user suggested a real “tick list” filtered by crag can help you keep track of what you wanted to climb so you can get going quicker. At the moment they’re blended together across crags and you have to manually filter the list.
How to make the app even better... it’s gotta be said... Augmented Reality. Some lines are hard to pick out even with a picture. Especially on large blank faces with few trees or gullies to help identify which part your on, a problem I do encounter on first visits. Overlaying the phone’s camera with the route = killer app for sure, can this be considered - I’d pay twice the amount for this feature if it worked!
Another improvement - friends and partners linking so you can log a climb and update each other’s ascents. Ie Rob lead, Jayne followed, and Freddy toproped with this linked to their individual profiles.
I could also see a use for “looking for partners” where you set your style, grade, equipment and intended location to help find someone to climb with. Might seem a bit Tinder-esque though...

Awesome guidebooks - now in an app

Rockfax guides are amazing, they were the first guidebook outfit (that I’m aware of) that respected people’s desire to arrive at an unfamiliar crag and quickly & easily identify lines.
This allowed me to spend my weekends climbing rather than trying to interpret long prose from uninspiring books which required I first find a route 5 meters to the left of mine, and before that, another route next to a holly bush that no longer exists.
Their photo topos and maps are excellent and the geolocate / crag finder feature get me climbing quicker. I love being able to log my climbs at the crag and sync them to the UKC database.

Fantastic way to pack light at the crag

I love an old dog-eared guidebook as much as the next person, but it’s convenient to have everything in your pocket and to have the ability to link to UKC logbook in there too, has really revolutionised keeping track of my climbing. I find it a bit clunky and slow if you use the app for a long amount of time but that may just be my phone. Not to mention it’s an absolute bargain considering you’re getting all the Rockfax guides in one place!

Great app, great guides

The Rockfax app provides a useful, well presented and feature-rich digital version of Rockfax’s huge range of guidebooks. It also has lots of useful digital-only features such as location tracking (ideal when you’re trying to find your way to an unobvious crag) and a direct link to the UKC logbooks.

Great when it works

Very useful app with loads of routes and crags, and easy to view topos. Log book is great and is the main benefit over using a book in my opinion.
Only issue for me is most of the topos for stanage edge are missing pictures. Not sure if this is the same for everyone or a local issue for me, but either way it’s where I’ll be going regularly and not being able to see the photos on the topos makes it completely useless because it’s impossible to find the routes.
Update:
Support got in contact and solved the issue overnight. Great job!
Well worth the subscription fee to be able to instantly look up any major crag wherever I may be rather than shelling out for a guidebook for single visits.
Also great way of tracking my climbs including the dates, style of ascent and partners, then filtering/sorting based on grade etc. to see my progress.

Having to buy content twice is a joke

Bought 2 guidebooks (£50 worth of guides) from the Rockfax website assuming that; once purchased, I could add them to the app through a code. No. You have to buy them all over again or purchase a membership.
I’ve already paid Rockfax for the content once. Having to pay again is a scam.
I’ll be returning the books for sure. There’s far better guides on the market that are much easier to use. Bet you eat like kings!

Few bugs

Nice app, been using it for a while. It’s a bit buggy but you get used to it. A new recent issue which is quite annoying is all my ticks have turned orange, whereas before you get a nice green tick for onsight/ red pointed routes so you know what to get back too

Very good useful app only one critacism

The only issue i found with the app and i don't know if its because i’m missing something is the ability to minimise the specific guides and countries in the my crags section. For example if i owned two england guides, a greece guide, an italy guide and a norway guide. I would have two scroll down through all 4 previous guides to reach the norway guide. The ability to be able to just select a country and then select a guide book then select crag etc would be very handy.

Guide books don’t work

Guide books I have purscahsed don’t appear,
App keeps crashing.
The purpose of guide book is to guide you when off climbing, I’ve wasted over 4 hours of my day trying to “trick and use the “ the app. Since I’ve wasted 19.99 on a book I can’t use returning business will not be occurring.
I thought maybe I I had techno issue but, no it just isn’t working in any way.
Great ideas, hence 1 * but wasting time when trying to use is defeating purpose.

Crashes Shortly After Opening

Used the app successfully for several years. Content has always been excellent.
Recently purchased the Rjukan guide for a upcoming trip and updated the app to the most recent release (which coincidently claims to fix the crash on startup bug) but now find that within 5-15 seconds of starting the app, either from fresh or while already open it crashes.
Issue experienced on an iPad running 12.1.1.
App would receive 5*s if not for the issue described above that makes its unusable, and effectively renders a significant amount of purchased content useless.j

Good app but buggy at the moment

I have the Dorset pack, when I tap on a crag from the list it loads a completely different crag, for example when I tap on blacknor north it opens battleship back cliff, in general it's a really good app but this bug is really annoying

Almost awesome

Useful app but fails to trump the equivalent guide books as it doesn’t scrape enough info from UKC. Sometimes the topo is out of date, and the best info is on the user comments on UKC (loose rock, dodgy anchor, etc). Also the average user grading from UKC is really helpful.

Great app, well done

Being an old school climber, lots of manky, out of date guidebooks! This has brought a breath of fresh air to my climbing. I still use the books as the app can’t cover all the climbs but the photos help a great deal. Keep up the good work.

Great app but...

It doesn’t seem to show routes I’ve added on the UK climbing site in the UK Climbing tab of the Logbook
Edit: Ignore my stupidity I was looking at the wrong tab.
Would it be possible to have the digital versions for free of the hard copy guides I’ve already bought?

Tons of Info - Expertly Presented

An incredible app with a wealth of information. Despite so much info, everything is displayed cleverly so that it doesn’t feel cluttered. Very impressed.
Yes the cost of the different areas can add up, but the slickness of the app and the data within makes it totally worth it.

Crashes every time I try to open it

This app seemed great until I added an extra filter option to either show trad or sport climbs in Dorset, I had purchased the entire Dorset booklet as such and all worked ok. We are climbing specifically in Portland which is known for its sport climbing and many site are full of sport climbers so we were looking for an area more suited to read climbing, added the filter no problem as described then as soon as I turned it on the app crashed, tried to open it and the app crashed, reset my phone and tried again and the app crashed, even deleted the app re downloaded updated purchases re downloaded the booklet and tried the filter again - app crashed. Advertised as being suited to this type of search but now can’t even open the app to send a trouble shooting query to the designer....... also as seen in other notes the climb length would be handy, it does sometimes show the height of the top of the crag but not a noted distance for each climb which is a bit disappointing. In general it’s a good idea but needs a bit of work to make it worth while. And a fix for the issue would be great

Cheaper to buy the books. Friezes iPhone.

Nice idea but it's cheaper to buy the books brand new from Amazon. Only managed to give this app a brief look as it kept completely freezing the phone. Only a hard reset would unfreeze it. An augmented reality feature where you hold your phone up to the crag and it overlays the routes would be amazing.

Great app

Was a bit unsure about this app as I love having guidebooks to physically hold, but this has certainly changed my mind. Seriously good layout and so easy to use. And it being linked up with UKC means you can log your climbs really easy too. Well worth it.

Mr

This is a great app that I've had for over 3 years.
However, be warned - maybe, consider when you "update it" off the App Store it sometimes blocks and stops the crags you've bought from displaying on your iPhone
Whenever the next update is I'm not pressing update....

Very useful accessory to guidebook

As guidebooks are becoming bigger and more cumbersome this app is a welcome addition because you can simply stuff your phone in your pocket or in the top of your rucksack and leave your guidebook nice and pristine. You can record your climbs easily and even use the mapping function to direct you to the crag. The only reason I haven't given it five stars is because there are a couple of crags on KalymnosTopo that are missing. (dolphin Bay).

Great display of routes

Used this app yesterday to find some DWS routes on holliday, it gives a bit of beta and a clear line of the route. It is nice paying for a set of crags only. This app has great potential and I like the UKC link.

If you're a boulderer- don't

I bought the eastern grit pack as I regularly Boulder in this area. It needs some serious work before this should be sold to the public as including bouldering. So much of the well established bouldering even at stanage plantation which is an incredibly popular area is completely missing. The bouldering filter just seems to show any climbs under 10 meters too, with little consideration towards using the app practically. The apps a great concept and with a lot more development it would be brilliant but I don't think it's worth the money at the minute for bouldering. N.B. I think if I was regularly trad climbing this would be much better suited to my needs.

Excellent support

Excellent support when the app stopped working after an update even though it was the Beta version . I had. The Guys at Rockfax were very quick to reply and sort ou the issue for me (sorry I'm not as quick at rating...) used on an I-phone 4S and have found to be excellent (Portland mobile signal not withstanding). Keep up the excellent work.

Jury's out..

I've only just downloaded the app, so time will tell if it's worth having, but my initial thought is that if you have to pay full price for a guide, you might as well have the book!?!
Before downloading, I clicked on in app purchases, to see how much it would cost, and everything is listed as free.... Nothing is free!

Great now will be excellent in the future!

After initially giving this app a bad review I have changed my mind after some excellent communication from the team and UKC. While I feel it's not fully there yet with some of the things I would like. It works well for what it does. It will be good to use it out on the crag and when I'm bored on a night shift!
The photo Topos are very good and the range of crags is excellent so far but I would find it hard to pay twice as I already own a lot of guidebooks which out and about limits the uses of the app for myself.
But for someone who is new into climbing the attraction to have everything online will be quite significant I'm sure.

Great app, functional and great looking. Very useful for short trips to the new climbing areas, when you don't need a whole new guidebook. Also a lot lighter than a book! Logging climbs on UKC and keeping a record is now even easier.

Well made app

Great app. A Lot of work has been put into this.
The app can be kept up to date by applying any new updates straight away. If you want to download a specific area but don’t need all the others then this is perfect. You can still add your ticks and add notes.
I will still use the main guidebooks as these are great for flicking through to look up your next project and to be inspired by the printed photography, but the app is good if you want to ‘travel light’.
