Children create a monster and take it on a magical journey over three extensive games - meeting a host of colourful characters along the way and improving their reading skills as they progress.

The game is rigorous and works with any phonics scheme so it’s perfect for use in school and at home. It’s developed in collaboration with leading academics at the University of Roehampton.

My son isn’t a reader, he doesn’t enjoy reading books. But he loves playing this game, he’ll ask to play it and enjoys it when he does.

He’s made big improvements to his reading, phonics, and spelling all thanks to the app.

He’s now starting to enjoy books more but still regularly asked to play this game.

It definitely makes reading and phonics more fun!

We love the Teach your monster to read game! We have it on most of the phones and tablets in the house. It has really helped my daughter progress quickly with her reading. She loves making new monsters so she can start again too, which has been a great way for her to practise and cement her knowledge of the earlier sounds.

She enjoys the different challenges set by the various characters she meets along the way. It is a game that she comes back to almost every day, she never gets bored of it and she sees it as a reward/treat. I can definitely see the improvement in her reading ability and I think this game has played a big part in that.

This is definitely a 5 star app. It starts off quite slow but I’d encourage people to stick with it. We have nearly finished all the levels now and the developers have done a great job of keeping things new and interesting but without changing things so quickly as to lose children who, I’m learning, enjoy routines and can play similar games many times without becoming bored. My daughter is in Reception class and I would recommend this to any parent of a child of that age. Thank you; I tried a few apps for learning and practicing phonics but this is the my daughter goes to first.

I downloaded this for my child a year ago & this is bar far the best app to teach a child to read I’ve ever found. I downloaded this for my daughter not long after she started p1. At first it was a great way for her to practice and remember the new sounds she’s learned but now she just loves ‘playing the game’ oblivious to the fact she is actually learning and progressing each time. We have this app on the phone and kindle. Only downfall is she’s further ahead on her kindle than she is on my phone, would be good to sync them both! Other than that, this app is superb and I highly recommend it. Such a fun way for little ones to build and develop their confidence in their letter sounds and reading.

I absolutely love this app for my 4 year old and as an Early Years Assistant Head Teacher, I highly recommend this app!! It’s great for learning new sounds in an interactive way. I love that is involves simple sounds, words, common exception words and sentences!

My two little recommendations would be;

1. Common exception words (especially at the beginning) often start with a capital letter which makes it harder for my child to pick up as he then has to sound it out, rather than sight reading.

2. A little something... it is in the letters and sounds order. It would be great (for my reception classes) if there was an option to either play in letters and sounds or RWI.

Other than that.... I love it!!!

My son has really been enjoying this game, it really helps with his reading, so much so he’s reading level has improved at school! He has got as far as the ‘ he said I need that goat’ and it just stops. He can’t pick the goat up it just ‘traps’ the monster and he can’t move any further? Not sure how I report this app issue??

A great app - fun, educational, exciting.

My only issue is some of the letter sounds are incorrect (and not due to dialect) for example the 'u' sounds comes out as an 'o' (my daughter keeps saying, 'why is it an o when it says an u?' Also, some of the example speech (the lady) is very quiet and hard to hear as well as the monster and narrator.

Was looking for a good app to help my boy 7 that has Dyslexia to practice the sounds and letters.

I read the reviews of this app and though it will help but the games are poor and repetitive.

Some games are not explained properly and we don’t get how they work. Equal frustration that I am trying to avoid with my son that is reluctant to read.

What a brilliant App.. reading is hard and can sometimes be boring but this app is amazing and it teaches all the important part of Phonics - “Hear it, say it” is so important and this game captures it perfectly. My son is 4 ( August baby) and in reception and is learning to read so naturally I tried every way I know ( I’m a TA) to encourage his reading but he was more than happy for me to read it for him and then this app showed up somewhere and I downloaded it. This app and lots of practice with other methods has brought his reading, writing and spellings on so much, I can’t recommend it enough. Not only can he read better but he’s so much more confident now. He spends about 16 minutes every other day playing on the app, it’s a fun way for him to rest, relax and learn!

Also as a school and someone who works intensively with SEND through out key stage 1 and 2 this app is huge hit! You’ll find it helps with everything from Fine motor, reading, concentrating to blending and sounding out and spelling/phonics.

If any children are having trouble with any part of the app please sit and spend a few minutes going out the sounds, words or phrases.. it’s a very independent app but could be used as part of some quality time together learning and relaxing.

Well done to the creators, you have made a brilliant educational app. Huge fan and I know all the children I work with are to.
