Really good app

I’ve also purchased the MacOS version which is virtually a mirror of this app and works flawlessly. I think the magic of this app is in its simplicity enabling one to focus on the story at hand. Combined with plenty of updates from the developer ensuring confidence in the customer, this has to be the best in its class. Totally recommend!

Nice app, with a caveat...

I like this app. It does its job well.

However, the developer’s decision to release an update every few days with the vague description of, “minor updates to make the app more helpful” is a little bizarre. To my eye, the app has remained unchanged over the last year. If they’re just making bug fixes, I would much prefer if they were released in batches, as is standard. Or in the very least, if the description offered some indication of what bugs are being fixed!

Lovely little app

Love it. Love that you can develop all your characters with photos and characters. Left a negativey review yesterday, but the developers responded instantly and explained and it was my mistake. But I can’t seem to remove that. Ignore the one titled ‘confused’ - I’m not! :-)

Developers please read!

A good app but a few small changes needed to make it really 5 stars and worth the price!

Firstly split screen support for iPad pro would be fantastic for using the app to map the story side by side to a manuscript.

Being able to call acts ‘chapters’ and support for novel writing would also be a great feature.

The dates on each scene bother me when writing for an unspecified time in the future and being able to turn these off (and turn off other features which aren’t needed) would be helpful. However having days of the week would be brilliant for organising timelines in writing! Also a timeline using these dates would be useful.

The ‘info’ pages, for example to show different types of scene and tension level, are great to refer to. A graph showing tension level vs. Position in the plot would be very helpful also to help writers see an outline of their plot.

Please take these suggestions into consideration! Love the app but needs more features and more flexibility for writers.

Excellent organizer for projects

I use this to replace The Board for breaking down the structure of scripts. It does a great job at it and if you take the time to prepare before you dive into the Scenes, it can provide you with some nice stats at the end, such as how many times a certain character appears in the project, which is the most popular location, etc. The more info you give it the more it gives back. After everything is laid out, then I start writing the scenes in Final Draft. So, pretty good tool, does exactly what promises.

Basic and pretty pointless

Doesn't really give you anything that writing notes anywhere else would offer. Yes, the sub categories could be considered as prompts, but there's no "planner" in this story planner. List characters, locations and plots. That's it. Can't customise it. Can't list items. A story without interesting items. Yeah, ok.

What it says on the tin

Ignore the negative reviews, as they're not understanding what this app is actually for. This app isn't here to help you brainstorm ideas. It's a tidy, clutter-free space to sort out and outline your ideas once you have them. In this app you can organise your characters, plots, settings and scenes in one place, ready for writing, editing and later review. A pro of this app is that is syncs well with scrivener, another great app for the actual writing or your story.

Ok if it was free

I regret spending money on this app, because it doesn't have much to offer. I'd hoped for some prompts to help you think about character, scene building etc. If that's what you want, Contour is a much better app (though only in regard to plotting). This app is as much use as a blank piece of paper really. Save your money.

So glad I found this!

I'm an aspiring, young writer and also a visual learner. People always advised that note cards, post-its, corkboards and marker pens were the best way to outline a novel... and I found it totally aggravating and uncoordinated 😡

Then I found this app! Perfect for me to categorise and make a detailed yet concise outline for my WIP. Finally feel like I'm making progress thanks to your app 👍 the 'master cat' example is also excellent for newbie outliners

A Fantastic App

I couldn't believe my eyes when I first discovered and started using Story Planner. It's a great app that not only helped me write and structure my stories but also educated me about the craft of writing and laying out a good narrative.

It's also great that it allows users to export their story plans to Final Draft. I highly recommend this app, 10 out of 10!

Everything you want for a story planning app

This app is perfect! I literally can't stress that enough. Since they added the option for adding photos of characters/locations it seriously can't be beaten. I've got my novel planned meticulously on this app and I wouldn't want it anywhere else.

Great idea, but needs an iOS 9/iPad Pro update

This app is really promising, but I wish it used the iPad Pro's keyboard (rather than an oversized iPad keyboard) and also had been com-lied for iOS feature such a split screen and slide over. Those two omissions make it too clumsy for me, but hopefully this will be corrected soon.

The new update has deleted all my work. I can't recover it because every time I try to open this app it shows an error!!!

Excellent story boarding program for writers and more!

I got this because I struggle to keep focused on projects. I recently started a small indie game group with some friends called Team Pantsu and although the writing for our first game is complete, the more narrative driven games were too complex to hold on paper alone.

This program helps a lot, giving you an organisational tool that splits down to overall plot, characters and locations with extra space for added parts. This allows you, whether novel writer, game maker or D&D player to keep track of what is in your project and pick out any issues that you would otherwise miss. It certainly helped me with a couple of plot hole issues in 'Tatari Mokke', a game that comes out soon.

Even better, it's cheap, especially compared to Scrivener, and still offers bang for your buck.

Unbelievable

At first it was a very friendly layout to organize my short story, but with the push of a button everything I'd written in the last half hour vanished, with simple features like auto save in word why would anyone risk this app? Totally gutted.

Needs work

Potentially a good simple story planning app. Allows you to plan scenes and outline characters.

However, very limited. In a project, you can only plan characters, scenes and locations. A glaring error is that you cannot outline plot lines. The scenes section allows you to attach a scene to a plot line (called P1, P2 etc), there isn't a plots section, so nowhere to actually write down what P1 or P2 are. Are users supposed to just keep all the plot lines in their head?

Interface and usability are good, but needs to be expanded and developed to really be useful for aspiring writers.

Great app, sync would make it perfect

Fantastic story-plotting app. I was able to get a story drafted out whilst on a flight recently using my iPad. Just wish you could sync over iCloud or Dropbox. I use this iPhone and iPad, but once I've started a project on one device I'm then restricted to just that device. Please add sync ASAP!

After buying this app it was useless as it would not open at all. I have deleted it and reinstalled it twice but no joy.......
