Description

Butterfly Id will help you quickly and easily identify species through the Id key and through photo recognition. Butterfly Id is great fun to use. Identification can be enjoyed by the whole family. For the enthusiast there is anatomical, ecological and taxonomic information too.
Butterfly Id can be used to keep a log of your sightings making it easy to build a record of all the butterflies you've seen.
In contrast to other apps Butterfly Id covers all species with hind- and forewings illustrated!
Butterfly Id has been created by professional published ecologists, and uses images selected with the specific aim of aiding identification.
SUNBIRD apps appear in Countryfile's top 10, and have been described as "incredibly useful" by ITV's Seth Conway and "lovely" by Adam Vaughan of the Guardian.
SUNBIRD field guides are the only products on the market that use the KUSAM species identification methodology. This state of the art method is a modern taxonomic keying system designed specifically for use on mobile devices.
The app does not need an internet connection, all content is downloaded when the app is purchased.

Disappointed

Paid for the in app purchase to be able to take photo to id but no ability to do so that I can find. Have searched everywhere for the option to id from a photo

Butterfly ID

Disappointed with this app, no instructions to help users, and far too complicated. I feel like I have wasted the download costs.

Not enough photos

For many of the butterflies there are not enough photos. At a minimum for many species you need 4. Male, female, wings open, wings closed. Yesterday I was trying to distinguish chalkhill blues from common blues and there just wasn’t the information. I wished I’d had my book with me.

Poor

I thought by paying this money it would be Better than the free Seek app and more accurate, no is the answer, gets the commonest ones worryingly wrong , waste of time and expense, wish I hadn’t bothered, I’d love a refund

Bait and switch

This app claims to include automatic recognition from photos. Perhaps worth the cost of download? Ah, but for that, you have to pay still more. Save yourself the money and buy a book. This practice shouldn’t be allowed by Apple in its App Store.

No stars!

I have used this app to help identify butterflies, from good photos taken on my iphone. Started my trial with ones I knew already, didn’t get a single one right. Finally took photo of Speckled Wood from the high quality chart we keep at home - app told me it was a Scotch Argus, next choice Blue Pansy!! Good thing it was a cheap App, now deleted

Low Tech App

I have an app to identify plants from a snap, the same for wine from a photo of the label, so I expected this app to identify butterflies from a photo. Sadly it’s just a photo album in an app, that relies on ‘twenty questions’ to get you the result. After spending £3.99 on the app, I had to post my picture on Facebook to get the answer from friends. It turned out my subject wasn’t on this app anyway, because it was a Jersey Tiger Moth, a day-flying moth that looks like a butterfly. But a moth, and this is a butterfly app.

Poor

Females rarely depicted. Some butterflies only the underside included others the reverse. Not an I.D. guide at all. £3.99 and a could have used the internet for free.

Not what I thought it would be

From reading another review I thought I could take a picture of a butterfly and the app would identify it- I have other apps for birds and flora that do this. But it does not do this, so you need to record all the details and it gives you a list of all the possibilities. So not really what I wanted so beware if you think you can go out, see a butterfly, take a picture and get the app to identify it from the picture.

Very impressed

I like this app so far. It seems easy and enjoyable to use. I went on user ratings rather than price (there are cheaper apps) and so far haven’t been disappointed.

A lot happens in a year...

5* but the app needs some TLC... a lot happens in tech in a year. The scrolling is a bit slow and I’m sure there are a few other upgrades that could be addressed. Show us some love iOS Developer 😘

Butterfly I D

The family picture is in fact a Camberwell Beauty not a tortoiseshell. Although the Camberwell Beauty is mentioned in all British Butterfly books it is omitted from this app!

Brilliant

These apps are well worth the money

More photographs needed

This app just isn’t worth the money. To be of any use you need at least four photos of each butterfly - open and closed wings of both the female and the male. The females are rarely shown and yet they are much more difficult to identify.
A distribution map would also be helpful.

Always available

“The best camera is the one you have with you” is an adage for photographers. Likewise the best reference book is the one you hold when you see something for the first time. I usually have my mobile to hand when out and find this series of apps very handy for identifying flora and fauna. This enhances my exploration of the countryside. It’s like having a knowledgeable companion for company.

Wrong and expensive

I don’t know that much about butterflies but I’ve already spotted three mistakes which in a guide to butterflies isn’t exactly w hat you want. There are photos wrongly categorised and butterflies that don’t ever come to this country included. It feels a bit amateurish. The free Butterfly conservation ID app is much better. Free!

Great Teaching App for the Curious.

If you are like me and don’t know one butterfly from another then you must get this app. I am a long distance walker and found it frustrating to see beautiful and plain butterflies and did not know what I was looking at. I like nothing better now than photographing one and then identifying and recording my sighting. Get it!!!

Butterfly Id

I find these apps are so useful when out and about. So often I see something and wonder what it is at times I wouldn’t normally have a guide with me - on bushes in a supermarket car park or inside the local cafe. I have failed once or twice but put it down to user/observer error as the likelihood of my finding something too rare to be included is remote. I haven’t got all of them but they certainly make taking the dogs for a walk more interesting.
alfiestride
2018-08-03

Disappointing

I would have expected at least two photos per species, one with open wings and one with closed wings and ideally four, showing male and female variations. This could be much better then it is in fact.

Good app - but....

Just bought this app in a bundle. I first glance it looks good, but after 5 minutes saw that a photo of Camberwell Beauty was labelled a Tortoiseshell, and on searching for Camberwell Beauty, no results came up. Sloppy

A good app. Please update it for 64 bit compatibility. I intend to update to iOS 11, but at the moment I will have to leave your app behind

Could be better

Not all the specimens have pictures of them with wings closed. I tried to list a sighting and none of the instructions worked and I ended up going in circles but couldn't list a sighting.
I've seen a butterfly that is not listed so I am not sure if the listing is complete.
The app doesn't really help users to navigate so, with the comments above, I can't give it top marks.

Great but not updated

This is a comprehensive and great app but it has not been updated since October 2014 so my up to date iPhone IOS warns that it may slow my phone down, which it does a bit. Perhaps it could do with some tweaks to sort this out. Otherwise a super app for on a be go identifying...:

These apps are really very good

This app is just what I was looking for excellent, well done. I am very pleased with all these apps in the series, the only one I haven't purchased was the one about snakes etc' not really my thing don't really see them, but if I do then maybe I will complete the set. Promising App

I like the Isoperia apps very much; the photographs are excellent, accompanied by informative text. This app is easy to navigate. I do hope that moths will be added in the not too distant future as, at present, the app appears to be in its early stages.
