Avoid for China
Purchased this on first day of 11 days trip to China. On the same day I realized it doesn’t work. When ‘connected’ it doesn’t provide any access to western websites but also bugs normal websites that usually accessible otherwise. I asked for money back within one hour of subscription, but was denied refund. Even tho it didn’t work and I uninstalled the app on the same day. I tried again since I’m not being given my money back. But the same story. Says it’s connected but actually is not. Don’t waste your money.

Used tonqirk well but now Largely pointless as all the companies know its a VPN and won't let it connect. they also auto-charged me, so I got another year of not watching TV in other countries. Not given it 1 star as it used to be decent.

Many servers, but quite unhelpful if you’re in china
I’ve had ExpressVPN for many years now, and pre pandemic it was also quite helpful when I visited china.
But now it’s quite useless on my current trip. I was able for the first 4 days or so to use their dedicated us server for china, but since then I couldn’t get a single server to work (it’s been 4 days and counting). The best I could get was like 5 minutes on 2 occasions where I could use any blocked apps or websites.
I’ve went with another vpn provider that’s a lot more reliable. So won’t be renewing the express von subscription once it expires.

Every time I tried to use it for sky go it said error code 50-2. Waste of money. Didn’t work for Dazn either it just said you have to watch this programme in the country you made th account in.

Can’t find a way to log in on other devices
Created subscription though the App Store so it works fine on my phone but there doesn’t seem to be anyway to login in on other devices, there’s no account details on the app, tried putting my email address in reset password by that doesn’t do anything. So I have an account but no way of knowing what my account details are so I can use on other devices. Not really with £90 a year for one devices is it

Unreliable
I use this to access formula one streams in Austria where they are free. It has been very frustrating for the one month I’ve used it. It’s a 50/50 chance if the live stream will work or if I’ll remain geolocked. Upon trying the same thing with Surfshark it worked straight away, definitely the better option and saves you a tiny bit of money. It’s also failed to gain a connection on most public wifi networks I’ve tried to use it on.

Doesn’t work with BBC or ITVX
Been using Express VPN for about a year now. At present, ITVX and BBC are detecting that I am outside the UK and are blocking access to their TV. Their Help & Support team were unable to assist other than to say they would escalate it to the top.

VPN not 100% - but they don’t tell you that
I tried using ExpressVPN to buy UK lottery ticket while on holiday abroad but apparently the UK National Lottery check for ‘residential’ ip address, which Express Uk Ip addresses are not registered as such and therefore fail.
The question is, why use a VPN when any business can do this check ?
So far 3 weeks into a 3 month trip abroad, my Express VPN has been an issue more time that it has solved anything. By that I mean that when i turn it off, more sites work than when turned on . This is not what I expected and certainly not what is offered advise-wise.
Wondering if my subscription is worth it. So far, not.

Utterly useless in China
Been a customer of Express VPN for more than 10 years, in the past it was a godsend when living in China, now for China it’s a useless piece of bloatware. Rarely connects, and even when you have the joy of being connected there’s absolutely ZERO internet on sites usually blocked by the great China firewall (eg WhatsApp, Viber, LinkedIn, BBC, Google Translate etc). Been using ExpressVPN in Saudi Arabia for about 7 years. It’s been absolutely flawless. I also use it on public Wi-Fi while travelling.
One downside is that over the last few years, some websites like Google Search have started detecting the use of a VPN and consequently make you do these quizzes to prove you’re a human. Ironically, I got this VPN due to Saudi internet restrictions and privacy concerns, but it’s Western websites that cause me the most problems. As a result of Google making searching harder, I moved to DuckDuckGo which is excellent. Also, Bing isn’t bothered about using a VPN. So it makes you wonder why Google doesn’t like users using them…

So disappointing
So 2022 I subscribed. Lots of teething problems but always quick to sort it via email. 2023 what a different company. My vpn does not work. I’ve reported it so many times I can’t count. I’m told to update - yes done that. Use a different protocol- yes done that. Use different location - yes done that. Now I’m told it’s a fault. They can’t tell me when it will be fixed. We are 8 weeks in. I pay a year in advance. So I asked for a two month refund. They stopped answering. Then when I said I’ll make a claim on my credit card they say it’s escalated to manager. Still waiting 18 days later. My advice do not purchase. If they refund me I’ll gladly update my review to say it’s been resolved. EDIT. EXPRESS VPN INVITE YOU TO EMAIL THEM AFTER YOU WRITE A REVIEW THEN IGNORE THAT EMAIL. THIS VPN DOES NOT WORK. DO NOT PURCHASE.

Be honest with your users
The worst thing isn’t the fact the vpn has become completely unusable, all of us living in China understand the reality of how much the blocking and censoring has been stepped up, and we understand how difficult it is to work around for the engineers.
What is unacceptable is the lack of any honesty or transparency from this company now. They don’t keep us consistently updated about the situation anymore, the last problem noted on the China website page was a month ago now , whilst they continue to take subscription fees with 0 communication, no refunds, whilst they could simply just tell us honestly ‘we really can’t do anything about this situation anymore, cancel your subscription if you live in China’.
Please , please do not download this and pay the expensive yearly fee if you are in China, paying monthly and hoping it will soon begin to work is bad enough already, and the company knows how desperate we all are, as other vpn apps are down too , we rely on this vpn with important parts of our lives, it’s disgusting the attitude this company has took, and stressful for all of us paying multiple subscriptions to different apps and hoping one works.

A regrettable yearly subscription in China
I have been with express vpn for almoat four months and did have some happy days when the connection was fine. However, it is rarely reliable for the past 2 months. As a self~employed worke in China highly relying on Google, I don’t have much time to waste trying every location for half an hour each day and end up fail half of the time. This time the days for not being able to connect has hear the record for over a week,which is frustrating. Now I am considering asking for a refund and quit this for good after nearly missing two important deadlines and a meeting. I don’t think the 24/7customer service is any good because what they do is recommend what is already suggested on the webpage and then blame China’s firewall, which is the reason why we need vpn at all in this country.

Throwing money down the drain at this point
I've used Express for 5 years now and China, and for about 80% of that time it had been reliable. It was always known as the VPN that keeps working when all others failed. But this past 1-2 months I have been without a connection, and the service update page has not changed since December 19th. Even before that when they were working on updates nothing improved. I'm paying a lot of money for a VPN that does not work at all. I don't think Express should offer thos service to customers in China if they cannot deliver their service. They are happy to take the payment (and have added a month free to compensate me), but I have had trouble with this app for a long time now.

This VPN does not work in China
Please do not pay for this. Even if they offer you a deal, with extra months free. It is a waste of your money if it doesn’t work. Which it doesn’t. I have had this VPN for around two months and I can count the number of times it has successfully connected (and stayed connected for as long as I need it to) on one hand. It really is that bad. There are far better options, they may cost more, but at least they work. I emailed their help desk for support and they responded by telling me to try what I had already said I had tried in my initial email to them, which is the same info they provide on their support page of steps they suggest you take to improve connection before you email the help desk. Yes, they are really that unhelpful.
This VPN used to be one of the best options for expats in China, and I have in the past fully recommended it to friends and colleagues, but it has seriously gone down hill. I have had to pay for a second, more reliable VPN at extra cost just so I can keep in touch with family and friends. Please don’t make the same mistake I did.

Excellent VPN - lots of points of presence
I’ve used Express VPN for years and love the speed, stability and the fact they have so many points of egress. I remember travelling to China forgetting our email and network access was provisioned by Google (and hence blocked there) but managed to find several points of presence that were not blocked. It is worth the money even with all those cheap deals out there at the moment. Remember you need to find a VPN provider that you trust (rather than some cheap offer) because the VPN provider can potentially watch all your network traffic that is unencrypted within the stream that you think you are protecting by using a VPN.

Shockingly useless
After 4 weeks of non connectivity in China, lack of any responses that are actually useful, I’ve come to the conclusion that this paid for service is a one man show? Looking at the reviews and bulk standard “thanks for the review, please contact us for our technical experts to assist you.” This service is below substandard, it’s multiple updates do not work, maybe they are purely animated updates to make it look like you’re connected, when obviously you are not! 4 weeks paid for within the subscription, I guess you won’t be giving me an extension or partial refund? Avoid throwing your money at this company that just hide and give you no nothing in return! When the going gets tough, find a free service!! Going to a rival me
Was good for a few months then started to have loads of problems, list as long as my arm. Constantly drops connection, Some locations don’t show then they do , An online check for dns leak shows 30 servers to expressvpns 6/8. And non of them are listed as ExpressVPN servers. Can’t access loads of sites and apps using ExpressVPN, ones you can run really slow, ohh and the biggest problem I’ve with them is you can only reset ur password through an email link . (Not very secure) when I clicked the link it would not open it coz it said the link was not secure?? So I’m going to nord vpn . The instant messaging facility for support is an absolute waste of time . The person (I think it as a bot) wasted over 30 minutes asking questions that she new was irrelevant to the issue/problem I was having . Only at the end of the session (30 mins ) did she give me the answer to my question . If it is a real person that messages and not a bot, y can they not message back in real time ? It’s like 5 mins before a reply off them. The excuse is always the same though for ignoring us (the customer). “Sorry I was checking my resources “

Cancelled after being loyal customer for years
After requesting this BASIC feature for YEARS with customer support, you have still not implemented a simple DARK MODE in your app. This is something that EVERY other app on my phone has, and your app is literally ONE screen making it far easier to implement than most other apps. Clearly ExpressVPN care very little about their customers and prefer them to use their app less and less until they cancel and use a competitor. I have had enough with the blinding white eye-strain and false promises from customer support, so I’ve cancelled after being loyal for years and have gone elsewhere. Well done for not listening to simple requests from your loyal customers about how your app is negatively affecting their health. Ridiculous.

Super Expensive Unreliable VPN
You know why it’s secure? Because you can’t get on the internet in the first place. The constant reconnection. Sometimes, (and this is hilarious) it says it’s connected and it’s all green WHEN ITS NOT EVEN CONNECTED!
I have never left a bad review in my life but I forked out a lot of money for something that isn’t even scratching the surface of the bare minimum. We can’t even get to comparing speeds against other VPN competitors because it won’t past the first hurdle of connecting to its own apparently amazing server locations. How can Express VPN call it self express when it’s the complete opposite of fast. It’s not even slow, you have to enter the race to be considered fast or slow.
Don’t get this, it’ll be fast when you pay for it but after the money back period they will give you subpar performance.

Current iOS and Mac version
The current iOS and Mac versions for China don’t work. They have been down for at least seven days. This is my second edit of this review. Support consists for reading back to you the details provided on the China support page. Then rolling off the same excuse about China security. Despite this astril vpn which I had to swap too continues to work. Overall very disappointing. I’ve been with ExpressVPN for many years. General the service has been good and consistent. However the lack of quality help and the fact 7 days later service has yet to be restored. Without a vpn in China the internet is not fit for purpose for even the most basic searches. Still waiting.

No use in China
I have had Express on and off for the 8 years I’ve been in China. There are periods of good connection, however recently, the problems with connections outweigh any good performance I might’ve had in the past. It’s strange, because after downloading other VPNs, I’ve found that there is no problem with their connection. So this is not a China problem, it is an Express VPN problem. I’ve connected with their online support they always promise that “they are aware of the problem and their engineers are working on the problem”. Well, get better engineers? It’s been two weeks now without a connection, and whilst offering me 2 weeks of free service is a nice gesture, it’s useless if I cannot actually connect. It’s unlikely I’ll be renewing my subscription, and instead I’ll continue with the subscription I’ve been forced to simultaneously take with an alternative provider.

Consistently reliable, disconnectivity on rare occasions
I’ve been subscribing the service for 4 years now, and to be completely honest, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the people working on it, they have ABSOLUTELY worked to the bone to make this magic come true, whenever a connection issue occurred, they were always keen to resolve it in a timely efficient manner. I know I’ll have to wait a while, with this disconnection proving to be rather persistent, but I have my faith, I know it will not be long before I experience the same perfect connection again.

It just stops working for days
Context: I live in China where I need a VPN to keep in contact with the outside world. When express works, it works as it should, but other times it just doesn’t work at all and there’s no explanation as to why it’s not working. I go to see their ways to resolve the issue and it’s always the same crap like, “change to automatic” (which it is already on) or, “wait for it to fully connect” (which it will not, no matter how long I wait).
To top it off, when I try to go to the support page, it requires a VPN to even access it. What idiot thought, “hey, let’s give them a support page they can go to when their VPN isn’t working. However, let’s make it so they need a VPN to see that support page”? I mean… seriously? Fix your app or at least give your customers something as a sorry every time your app doesn’t do what the customers are paying for it to do.

Hoping to offer balance.
Naturally when an application doesn’t work well, then people turn to ratings and reviews. This creates an imbalance and puts some off trying the application. Having used this vpn for a few years I’ve experienced both sides with some connection issues and other times with really excellent connectivity. I live in China so this connectivity is never going to be completely reliable but for the most part it is rather decent and stable. In the last year it has certainly improved. I’m due to renew my subscription with no qualms.

Great if it's working, which is rare
Express worked for a couple of weeks in China and then it essentially became unusable. The only solution support gives is to please be patient. It promises a lot, but doesn't deliver. There are better VPNs out there for China.
Edit following developer response: I contacted your support and what I essentially got was that Express was working on the problem and to be patient. In the meantime, my other vpn just kept working. So if I have already contacted support, why should I do so again? Or do you just respond to try to save face because of all the bad reviews you are getting lately? Just dedicate the resources needed so that your customers don't spend a week without internet, and then you might start getting g good reviews again.

WARNING -FRAUD- takes money from you even when unsubscribed
I advise anyone contemplating trying even the free trial not to do so. I recently cancelled auto renewal on this service as the VPN signal keeps dropping. I did this at least 2 weeks before the renewal date, only now they are claiming that they have no record of me requesting to switch it off and have charged me for this month. I am already using another VPN service at this point and never intended to use ExpressVPN this month. When making this know to them they Ignored my request for a refund for this month. I was only charged 2 days ago and have not even been using their service for at least a week now. They will not even acknowledge that I asked for a refund and keep brushing it off, saying they have now switched off auto renewal and I still have access for another month and what a great service they provide. I do not trust them not to take money from me next month too. BE WARNED - AUTO RENEWAL IS AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED WHEN YOU SUBSCRIBE AND YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN IT OFF.

Too much traffic
I downloaded this vpn to see what it was like before paying a handsome fee for their service. Most of the time it connects no problem. Sometimes it has trouble, not often. I have to go through different servers to get different things to work. Sometimes streaming is blocked. Sometimes websites think I’m a robot as there is too much traffic from wherever it says I am, this happens on quite a few servers. I’ve cancelled the subscription at the end of the free trial, if they drop the price I might give it another go, at the minute it’s not worth the subscription price as I think it’s too high for what I’ve got to do to get what I want from it.

iOS 11.5.0 Concern
Personal experience - IOS update changes offered protocols to Lightway UDP, lightway TCP and IKEv2.
The previous UDP and TCP protocols have been removed.
Given that Lightway is supposed to be faster with better connectivity and security, my conducted speed checks find the protocol much slower.
In order that I maintain better speeds, the protocol best used is IKEv2 (not automatic) as this speed is the same as the Lightway protocol.
I am very disappointed, as I have been excitedly waiting for Lightway protocol, and the first introduction has not been very good.
I have purchased annual subscription so will be watching updates carefully. I have also spoken to the Team via Chat.
They have been courteous and considerate to my complaint.
I genuinely hope that they will resolve this promptly, given that I do like their service. This issue is enough to push me to search for another provider, but do think that they deserve an opportunity to make good on their in-house built protocol.
By submitting this review, I believe it to be fair to all concerned, but advise users to consider whether to update their app to 11.5.0.
Personally, I have turned all devices off auto-update in order to prevent ExpressVPN being updated on my other apple products, and will continue to observe developments over the coming months.

Excessive Cellular Data Consumption
BEWARE!! Based on reviews I’ve read on various websites and YT videos, I decided to give ExpressVPN a shot. Initially all seemed great, good speed, reliable connection etc. A couple of weeks in to my subscription I received an text alert from my mobile provider that my recently refresh data allowance was almost used up. This was unusual and unexpected since most of the time my iPhone is mostly connected to WiFi and I my monthly mobile data usage is very low. Sure enough when I checked the mobile data usage in iPhone settings it showed the Express VPN app had used 3.5GB of data of my 4GB monthly allowance in a week. I contacted their support, but to cut a long story short, they advised to turn mobile data off every time I connect to WiFi!! Their app does not prioritise to use the available WiFi connection and continues to eat up mobile data. Not sure how the app on it’s own can use so much data. Luckily they have a 30 day money back guarantee which I will be taking advantage of. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max on the latest version of iOS

No internet available this stops essential apps!
I trialled this app and it did exactly what it said it would do. However, with the pandemic and areas with no accessible wifi it meant that many of my essential payment and other apps failed to work. There should a way of temporarily disabling the need for internet access. Since there was no way to do this, I deleted the app. The next day I thought I would re-load it to make sure process worked. After 5 hours of my life and many different attempts to get me back into the app from the excellent support staff, I had absolutely no joy. As good as this app is with internet access, without it this app has crippled my iphone function. Deleted it again and cancelled my annual subscription due later this week. Be careful with app!

Express VPN in Action
I was previously working in China for several short term postings. With the levels of cyber security and interference which continues within China’s borders, having a VPN is essential to continuing communications with friends, family and work colleagues. I had tried several which gave me no cover whatsoever but on the advice of a colleague I joined Express VPN, it gave me cover instantaneously and was only blocked on very rare occasions when the authorities stepped up their blocking manoeuvres to very high levels.
I continue to operate using a VPN now that I have left China, as it gives me a greater level of protection and reassurance.

Good at first.... but now it barely works
I’ve been using Express (or trying to) almost everyday since I arrived in China in April 2018. At first it was very reliable and fast. However occasionally the VPN would go for periods of being unable to connect (usually for a day or two).
Now the problem has continued to grow and I’ve been paying for an app that is faulty more days than it is working. I have free VPNS that are inconsistent but they still manage to somewhat work whereas Express stops working entirely for days/weeks at a time. (Even when it works only 2 locations work)
Furthermore the customer service is awful. They refuse to refund and their only advice is to make sure the app is updated. Then when the issues are fixed there’s no notifications... so sometimes it stops working for a week and then I didn’t know it was working again unless I’m trying to connect everyday🤦♂️.
At the moment the only thing stopping me from cancelling and finding a new vpn provider is finding a decent vpn owned by a Chinese company so I can pay in RMB not £. (Chinese ones are waaaaaay cheaper FYI)
There’s about 17 people in my company using it that are waiting to find a better solution... I suggest you find another VPN if you want consistency and reliable services with helpful customer service.

From most reliable to feeling like a money grab!
**September 2020 update* downloaded your latest update and now nothing’s working again, i have to say march - August it was much improved, but now it’s not working on any server again 🙄** This is my 4th year In China, I know the restrictions aren’t the fault of vpn networks and what’s happening in Hong Kong is not helping, yes every time you update I have a smooth few days where everything works fine but as soon as china block one or all of your servers it’s weeks before more updates, I’m tired of being told to check your update page and to check for china/app updates.... there aren’t any, also the generic response that is just the same PR machine general answer, directing you to do exactly what I said above is just boring and useless, plus you wait 24 hours to get said response! Express why aren’t you offering those of us who’ve been loyal yearly subscribers partial refunds or discounts for the next year or rebates on the months we can’t log in! You have our data logs you can see our usage! Your advertising is that your the best for china? Prove it or reimburse your loyal customers some how!!

Not the best VPN for China!
I’ve just read a review about a user in China so I’d also like to share my experience of using this vpn. It’s totally unreliable. It connects on average 6 days out of 10 (if you’re lucky!). I’ve been left without a vpn for up to 8 days on several occasions over the past two years when my colleagues who are using another cheaper one (I suppose I’m not allowed to mention the name!) have remained connected over the same time period. It’s been a real hassle and inconvenience to have to rely on your services! I have to reconfigure on a daily or biweekly basis; this is often ineffective. I’ve followed all the other required instructions but to no avail. It’s not like me to leave bad reviews but since you claim to be able to provide a service to your customers and charge quite a lot for it, I believe the public deserves the truth. A free vpn that I found in my App Store actually connects when yours is ineffective! It’s obviously not very powerful but it does connect and has been a lifesaver for me. Needless to say I’m not the only in this situation and would like a refund! Lol! I suppose not all wishes come true! :)

Users in China - Stay away
Despite claiming to be the best VPN service for users in China, in their wide spread and targeted advertising campaigns, the unfortunate truth is they are far from being the best and they have become progressively worse over the past few years.
Instead of spending all their time with marketing, I recommend that the engineers they claim are always working to restore service are actually doing that. I’d also would appreciate the customer service team to not send the same batch response of our engineers are working on this, have you tried the recommended servers, and is your app up to date!
My friends have switch to Astril at the end of their subscription and it’s far better in China than Express. I’ll be doing the same, maybe before my subscription ends as I’m currently 1 week without getting a single connection. Disappointing.

Poor. Keeps locking up my phone.
I have used this now for a year and whilst it was good at the start I have noticed more and more on my iPhone 11max pro, and now my iMac desktop if I have it on in sometimes freezes my system and locks me off the internet. I always go crazy as I can’t find the problem, then I realise it’s the VPN! Everyone. I think it’s related to every Apple system software update on any device? Either way it’s a headache. I now leave it off more than I have it on for this reason. Pointless paying £100+ a year if you can’t even use it.

Unreliable in China
I’ve been living in china for two years and unfortunately Express VPN becomes less and less reliable as the weeks go on. Initially it was great. However, over the last 12 months the servers available in China have been reduced to less than 5 and at least once a month it goes down and states that new blocks have been put in place. Seems funny that some free VPN’s which require no sign up can consistently beat the firewall but the expensive service of Express VPN cannot. Also, being from the UK, it would be handy to have a UK server which worked but this has been unavailable for around six months and does not seem to be coming online anytime soon. Unfortunately this app is no longer the No.1 VPN in China and you’ll have better luck with ones which do not require you to pay 80 US dollars per year.

Living in China? Do NOT get this.
Do NOT recommend for China. I’ve had ExpressVPN for almost 1 year now and it is rarely consistent. There is at least one problem each month where you’ll be unable to connect. These instances usually last days and the customer service can’t help, ever. As I write this the app has just had an update and is now not connecting to any location.
I’m sure the app is good in other locations as it has great reviews from other places. It’s a shame because when it works it’s usually very good, but when it’s not working it’s usually a big problem that takes days to fix with no warnings or updates on when it’ll be fixed. There are free VPN services that work better in China and if you’re working or need to access gmail, ExpressVPN can’t be relied on.

Awful Service
I have lived in China for 4 months. I was told that ExpressVPN was the best VPN to use, so I purchased an annual subscription and am sorely regretting it given the cost. Free VPN’s work better than this and stay connected for longer. Even when express has worked, it disconnects all the time. It’s so slow, I can barely load webpages. It works better on data than on WiFi. I understand that China have regular security updates, but ExpressVPN are not delivering a good service in comparison to other VPN’s.
Last month, I attempted to contact support. Upon finding out I was based in China, I was given generic response emails. I’m not even sure if I spoke to a real human as I received such polished information with no help or relevance and no one answered my questions. If you’re coming to China, this isn’t the VPN that you should get, I promise you that. Myself and my colleagues all feel we have wasted our money.

Continued Problems In Mainland China
I’ve used this VPN in mainland China for about three and a half years and for the first three years it was great.
However over the last four to six months this VPN has really struggled to connect at all. Having paid for another years subscription in April, I messaged the support team about two weeks ago to discuss cancellation of my subscription and was told I would receive an email, I have not.
This app is still being advertised online as “the best VPN for China,” however, over the past four months it hasn’t been. I have used free basic VPNs that have connected perfectly well over the past 12 weeks when this one has been completely unable to connect.
If you’re coming to Mainland China and looking for a reliable VPN, (for now) look elsewhere.

Used to be much better...
I have lived in Beijing, China for 4 years and have only ever used Express VPN on my Mac. It was reliable and fast for 3 and a half years. Then the political conferences started. Things have definitely taken a downward spiral for Express since then. It always crashes on my iPhone (doesn’t even let me sign in on my iPhone X) but I use a free vpn on it now anyway.
Express constantly needs updating to the latest app. Even when I’ve updated, it tells me that it’s not the latest update (hang on, sorry?) I emailed to ask what can be done, and all I was messaged was stuff I’d done already (...have you updated, bla bla, bla).
Express used to be so reliable. There are a lot more reliable VPNs for people living in China on the market. I’ve heard Astrill is the way forward. Cheers Express, you’ve had a good run. I’m off to pastures new (of the Astrill kind).

Paid for an app that doesn’t work
Hi to everyone , I been bought this app nearly 12 months ago, with a 1 year and half contract because i was going to live in China .. at begin it was work ok with some up and down... lately the app is start to work very bad in the last 2 or 3 weeks i can’t connect at all .. i have been contact they customer service so many times but the reply is always the same , alway they let you do the worthless troubleshooting that let you waist an hour with no result .. in the mean time i been start to use other free VPN that work until now perfectly! When i contacted their customer service and explain this they really didn’t care to sort out the problem that I have. I will suggest to everyone that go to China to get different VPN instead of this one . Many VPN works very good also the free one .. Expressvpn is too well know and the Chinese gov are on them thats why the app doesn't work at all or very bad

Service getting worse
I’ve had express VPN for almost 2 years while living in China and at first it was honestly great. However, recently it has been absolutely terrible... there are new connectivity problems every week and this has been going on for months and before that there were still problems at least every few weeks. I know of people who are even using free VPN’s here in China and they are receiving better services! I never complain and I always understand that things happen beyond control but it’s just becoming a joke now. We pay money for this service yet half the time we can’t use it. You claim to be the best VPN for living in China and while that might have been the case a few years ago, it certainly isn’t now. As for the automatic response of telling people to email you guys, just a heads up that I have a gmail account so right now no I can’t email you due to the service being down AGAIN. I’m extra annoyed because I still have another few months left for what I have paid... but believe me if things don’t improve I’ll not be renewing, I’ll find another service. I know a lot of people who live in China who have already changed to a different service because of how bad Express has become.

Decent service but not perfect in preventing geo tv like virgin or sky
Reliable service i can get most of what i need but the bigger deal for me was paying virgin for sky sport subscriptions and not getting it to work, when away abroad, we used to get it here

I noticed I could set up to be fixed as in London but some web sites try to say I’m in the hague or when in america it can say that although set for London, a web site says I’m in Saudi ?

Connection stability is mediocre
Pros: easy to use. lots of countries to select a server in.
Cons: connections to servers are reasonable but do drop out. Servers become unavailable and you end up ping ponging your connection between alternative servers within the same country.
I want a connection that is seamless and consistent.
Another gripe is the dedicated vpn app takes over control of the iOS vpn switches, i.e. If I want to turn vpn off via the iOS switch, the dedicated vpn app will override your iOS selection and turn the vpn back on. You have to turn the vpn off via the dedicated vpn app. Why does the dedicated vpn app not complement the iOS app switches making the vpn connection (on/off) operable from both iOS and the app?
Over all this is a straight forward easy to use vpn service but could do with some small improvements.

Hope for the best expect the worst.
I’ve been with express for over 2 years whilst living in China, and I understand that China is known for its internet crackdowns, but paying nearly $100 compared to other vpn services is too much. Ive gone weeks before with no connection, when its claimed to be the best one for China, it drops constantly, and there are no added benefits for subscribing for another year, I have seen other comments that have complained about the same thing, would be nice to see some sort of reward for staying loyal. Other services have this. Problem with app saying its disconnected when it hasn’t, it completely stops the internet and I have to delete the app and re-download it to get my service back. Costumer service people though are great, always eager to help, a major reason for staying with Express for so long.

Who is the benefactor?
Having lived and worked in China for eight years I found the services provided by Express VPN consistent and convenient, however since 2018 this has become progressively worse and last year I was unable to access their web site. On my return to UK this summer I renewed my annual subscription and ensured everything had been updated to the current version on the same day I returned to China only to discover that their web site is still unavailable and due to the severe internet restrictions imposed by China this year find that I’m unable to access any of my education sites, including the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. I always assumed this was why a VPN was necessary. And despite all the claims made by Express VPN their service is non existent for all my teaching colleagues who have to rely on the internet for their teaching material so having paid a subscription for a full year it’s understandable that I am writing this complaint and ask who is the benefactor, certainly not many who are living in China.

Good for the west only
I have been living in china for the past year and I have to say that the service has been worse than pretty all of the free VPN’s I’ve tried. Even the free ones go down on the national holidays, then get fixed within a week; the only difference is that express costs £100 for two years! Their support is good and in the UK where I’m from, it works flawlessly and it’s really good. Unfortunately, I can’t use it in china almost at all. The connection ratio is like 20:80 it almost never works and when it does it usually disconnects within half an hour. Contacting support makes no difference, you just get copy and pasted answers. I wouldn’t recommend this VPN for china. They parade around how secure it is but at least make it work first and THEN make it secure! Try VPN360 or Astrill for a good, reliable service :)

Unusable
This VPN doesn’t go two minutes without dropping out and taking around 20 seconds to reconnect. I often find myself wondering why things aren’t loading, then opening the app to see the ‘Reconnecting...’ status. I usually have to open the app manually and babysit it to get it to reconnect as it rarely does so automatically. Every time I lock and unlock my phone the VPN spends 20 seconds reconnecting. All this is on the latest version and independent of the server and connection type/strength. Reinstalling configurations hasn’t helped, nor has changing the protocol.
Obviously, being constantly disconnected defeats the point of having a mobile device. This is a shame because when it does work, the service is really fast and useful, especially on other platforms (macOS and Windows). Until the dropping out is fixed, though, I find the iOS version frustrating and unusable.

Excellent App
Express VPN is an excellent app. I would recommend it to any person looking for a reliable VPN app.
My little suggestion to the developers is to include a feature (option) that allows the app to automatically change between recommended server locations when attempting to connect. As a user, I can choose which location I want but sometimes it takes so much time trying to connect only to fail. So I would have to start all over selecting a new server location. Is it possible to make the app automatically connect me to any server available. In China, we don’t have much choices about preferred servers, we are only interested in connections.

Works ok
Been using this on iPad/ iPhone/Laptop/ desktop and seems to work ok, but the price for this service is very expensive so this may be the last before I change to another well known different vpn that offer for the same price a three year deal....
First time had a problem today when updating, just froze the app would not update, the iOS switch would turn off the vpn but would come back on again, in the end had to delete the app turn off iPad and reinstall...... this was all before the iOS13 update that comes out later today....

Amazing
I’ve just come back from Beijing, I was desperate to maintain contact with the rest of the world whilst I was away so I downloaded, not expecting anything more than the occasional ability to log into WhatsApp.
I was blown away; I was able to log into all my social media accounts and messaging apps that I was previously locked out of.
I ran into a connection hiccup about a week in and contacted support. I was texting someone almost immediately and managed to connect through a different server, fantastic service.
Highly recommendand will absolutely subscribe again before I next visit the Great Firewall. THUMBS UP!!!

I used to love this VPN but it’s now a liability
These people have a real glitch with Apple devices. I have spent days in the phone with Apple trying to understand why I couldn’t receive or send mail. Not to mention all the time wasted, the inability not to access mobile email for DAYS on end completely killed any productivity. The cost was huge. It turned out it was Express VPN not allowing mail usage. Of course the cheery little helper on the other end of the phone told me all the settings to change so it would work. But I should not have had to do that given mail is a mainstream app. Have ditched them never to return. Inexcusable

Crashes on iOS - So Unreliable
They seem to issue bug fixes every week on this product that just introduces more issues on the iOS devices. Poor support and terrible product that stops working intermittently. Time to look at NORD!
As an update to the developer response, the connectivity issues occur every time you release an update, which always appears untested. We have tried this on two devices (iPhone XSMax and iPhone 8, both running the latest iOS), each device will connect to your VPN and when it switched to cellular or back to WiFi, the VPN actually stops working but also prevents and data flow until you stop the VPN or restart it. In the last two months we have reported this issue and the application crashing and tried all the diagnostic steps, but to be fair this product shouldn’t be updated until it is tested correctly and it should never be a case of using the customer base to test for bugs!
We have now deleted this software and moved to Nord VPN, so here’s hoping for a better product and less bugs.

Brilliant
I have now used Express vpn for a few months. I must admit to finding it a bit strange to start with (compared to my previous vpn) and although it is more expensive than others I can honestly say from my own point of view that it is worth every penny! It has amazed me as to how many times my internet traffic has dropped without me knowing and the automatic lock has kicked in, stopping any chance of my ISP tracing my traffic. The customer service is second to none and definitely a good part of the package. ExpressVPN will be my provider from now on. JG.

Unreliable
I got ExpressVPN a few month ago and have had numerous issues. Both the PC and iOS app have had some major flaws such as data leaking when trying to switch servers, the PC app never saving any changed settings (so rarely automatically loaded when the PC did), no killswitch option when manually disconnecting the VPN on the iOS, and the killswitch option on the PC can only be turned on when you are not connected to the VPN meaning you are pretty much guaranteed to leak data just to turn on the option to stop that from happening ...
Since the last iOS update the service has become practically unusable in low signal strength areas, when previously it was fine, then the app just sits their saying ‘reconnecting’ but doesn’t do anything till I manually DC it, and then reconnect.
Also the amount of available servers compared to many other providers is poor, and very few work on things like Netflix (Oddly enough some work on the iOS version of Netflix, but not on the website)

These things are always the same for me. Yes, some work and do actually get me what I want in terms of watching things in other countries, but the flaw in this & every VPN I’ve tried, is that it slows down everything I want ant to do on my phone, and not by just a few, or even ten seconds, it literally takes about a minute to load any webpage or any video content while I’ve got a VPN running. I just can’t take that sort of delay in using the Internet. It may be tolerable if I occasionally want to watch a video from another country or something, but if I have to keep turning it on and off all the time it defeats the purpose really. Either it can be on all the time and protect all my activity on the Internet, or it can’t. Unfortunately it seems that no VPN can do that.

Good but unstable
I’ve been using ExpressVPN for a couple of years now. From my experience with other providers in the past they are the better service provider, with uses over multiple platforms, a good support team and a decent software. However, it’s kinda sad that the quality of the connections are so fluctuating, one day you connect to the US and things work okay, but the next it can’t seem to stabilise and makes any kind of entertainment impossible to do. I feel like every so often my wife and I discuss which server has the best connection and go with that for a while until things go side ways again and we have to spend some time finding a new decent server.
