Description

Access Git repositories on the go. Clone, edit, commit and push while allowing other apps access to repositories.
Git is a important part of our work-life and iOS can take part in this. The ability to commit even when offline has added utility on a device that moves in and out of network coverage. Cloning repositories gets you a local copy on your iOS device with commits for all branches. You can browse the content from within the app and make changes. Other applications supporting the Files app, WebDAV or x-callback-url has access to these files. Changes made can be committed and the commits can in turn be pushed back to the remote.
The idea of doing significant programming on iOS might seem far fetched when you are used to a large screen, a physical keyboard and a full IDE. But just as it turned out that not every email is serious prose, then not everything that goes on in Git is significant programming. Sometimes you just want to update a TODO file or make adjustments to your Jekyll site. Sometimes you just need to add a file the designer sent after hours.
If you ever make reminders about small things to do with the code-base, then you should give Working Copy a try. You will spend less time moving stuff around and you will get much better commit messages when you write them for fixes that are still fresh in your mind. You won't be leaving your computer behind any time soon, but sometimes it is faster to just fix things with the device in your hand.
When you do need to perform real work on iOS, Working Copy is a powerful tool. Editor has syntax highlighting for more than 50 programming languages and a built-in color picker. Preview images, Markdown and HTML files with a Javascript console pointing to errors in your code. Create new branches and merge or rebase them back, with a brilliant merge-tool for handling conflicts. If you need to automate your work there are Working Copy actions in the Shortcuts app for most operations.
Even if you never edit a line of code on iOS, Working Copy is a great companion for reviewing and discussing code. Repositories are cross indexed and with powerful fuzzy search you can quickly jump from a symbol to the declaration or reverse from the declaration to all usages. A graph of your commits lets you zoom out for a overview of the commit tree or zoom in for specifics about each commit, with speed and beauty you won’t find in desktop Git applications. Review the changes your files have gone through with a diff viewer that is great for text and images. There is even hex-dump mode for that obscure occasion.
Working Copy is a free download but you need to unlock pro features such as the ability to push commits and manage more than 5 repositories. There is no venture capital, large company or ads funding development and your support through in-app purchase directly sustains development. Try out pro features with a 10 day free trial.
When you pay to unlock you get permanent access to all pro features at the time of purchase as well as any added the next year. When 12 months have passed you keep all existing pro features but any new ones introduced are locked until you renew your unlock.

What's New in Version 6.7.5

Repositories have icons auto-detected from project images and remote avatars. Tap the icon on the Status & Configuration screen to customize with another file from the repository, clipboard contents, photos library, or image files.
Working Copy is localized to Danish and German.
Repositories can be reordered by drag-and-drop.
Directory filtering can hide entries starting with .
Apex syntax highlighting with SOQL support.
Includes enhancements from latest versions
Switch away from Working Copy during Git operations and have them continue in the background. Clone, Fetch, Pull & Push operations show progress as Live Activities. This requires iOS 26.
Create and use SSH keys on Secure Enclave for Git authentication and commit+tag signing. Each use requires either Face or Touch ID and there is no way to export private keys, but otherwise they work just like regular SSH keys. This is a pro feature available to anyone who purchased or upgraded their pro unlock on December 15, 2024 or later.
Support for signing tags with GPG or SSH keys.
Tag Commit action for Shortcuts app.

Nice-ish app with buggy features (AI slop?) Rebase support incomplete.

It's a promising app with some nice aspects, the basic clone+view+navigate+iosFolder integration is mostly very nice, I can see why so many people recommend it; but despite the docs suggesting that there's rebase support, it is only for pulls, and not against SHA/Branch - which makes fixing bad merge/rebase resolutions impossible. NB: the user-docs do clarify that rebase is a pro+pull switch, the main page suggests full rebase support.
Also there's no abort-merge, abort-rebase (from pull), reset --hard , etc.. The premium price would be very worth it with these.
It would be possible to live with the above but the current version's conflict resolve is very buggy; if I want to discard the upstream patch and there's no way to restart the merge/rebase/pull once it's been cancelled. Or at least I gave up before I worked out what I was missing.
Also, worryingly, the resolve UI's status bar floats during resolve, obscuring text - clearly not a well human-attended/maintained/tested feature - that said the underlying principle of dragging-in/out patches is an absolutely genius idea on mobile, hence two stars instead of zero.
Finding and accessing the repo's settings is non intuitive.
"Revert" seems to actually hard reset which is incorrect semantics. Correct terms in git-cli are: "revert" does inverse-apply-commit, "restore" does discard changes, "reset" does discard changes and move to sha.
The iconography and colouring are a bit weird at times; what's yellow/red green mean during commits/conflicts? why a fingerprint? etc.
Overall feels like the UX is sloppy and unclear, and feels like either it's been badly thought through to get to MVP/POC/ROI, or it's been vibe coded - the latter is more likely having read the various articles about it and looked at the ai-features in it.
NB: Nothing wrong with using AI Agentic dev; I train LLMs and use AI for dev, *a lot*. We just need to be super diligent act like a engineering manager/SRE over our agents/teams... for now.
i'll stick with iSH for now, even though it's v slow for git on decent sized repos.

And adequate app, but would having some text on the icons be that much more difficult?

I appreciate that it can take time to add translations for a large amount of languages, but it was extremely frustrating (even as a native English speaker) trying to decipher the frankly obtuse amount of pictograms in order to work out what they represented - some of which were easy to understand, but others less so. For an app that wants a not insignificant sum to unlock pro features, I think that's pretty unforgivable. I appreciate that over time this would become second nature, but I shouldn't have to spend my first time with a new git client with trial and error. Simple (even toggleable) text underneath each icon would be a lifesaver. Or even a long-press on the icon to reveal its function. It's easy when you've spent time using the app to go "Well clearly that icon is a push and that one is a fetch", but looking at it with fresh eyes as i've done, it's not that obvious, and that makes the app more frustrating to use.

“Free” until you push

The free version lets you clone and edit files which is good and all, but the moment you need to push you’ve a paywall in your face. I’m all for developers making a living but maybe let your users know that pushing is a paid feature before you go and surprise them with a £30 fee? If you want to level with your customer base don’t do scummy practices.

So useful

Exceptionally useful. Shame there's a negative review right at the top because it's brilliant. I use it for merging branches and triggering deploys when I don't have my laptop with me and it's invaluable for that.
The developer is super responsive and helpful too. App store needs more apps like this in my opinion.

Full LFS git client on iPad

I think this is the only true fit client that fully supports LFS on the iPad. It works great, a few quirks, more due to the iOS operating environment than the app.
I am able to easily sync work between my work pc and iPad allowing seamless work off site on large image files.
Customer support is excellent, a recent update caused some issues with LFS support, I emailed the developer and within a couple of hours he had uploaded a fix for the problem.

incredibly buggy

super clunky UI, needs usability fixes, many features missing. Fetching and pulling from large repositories leads to progress bars stuck with no explanation. Hiding the logs view doesn't remove it from the screen, but sticks it at the top as a an unreadable line of 5 pixels height at the top.

Great app, but £18 is too much

I’ve been using this app for perhaps a year now, and since then it has been free to stage commits from my iPad, absolutely no problem! The app is clear and intuitive, buttery smooth to use, and integrates very well with the iPad, so normally I would recommend it to anyone who intends to write code on the go.
But recently they’ve decided to charge £18 for a feature set that used to be free, and so now I’ve unsuspectingly started a new project on my iPad, thinking that I can just send it to GitHub, but now there’s a paywall out of nowhere.
It frustrates me when developers do this. I understand that there has to be some give and take between the developer and the end user, but not like this. It’s the same feeling as receiving a present, only to find 6 months down the line that you now have to either pay for it or return it.
If it were slightly cheaper (say £4.99), was crowdfunded like some other programming apps or the developer decided to place ads within the app, I could accept it, but a full £18 is past the threshold for me, so unfortunately I will not be using this app any more.

Best of the best

I was impressed when did start to use Working Copy app. It has everything what can be usefull on-the-go and more above.

Version 5.1.3
2022-03-22

Great app, but it’s not really free

This app has a lot to offer, really pleased and very well made, However in order to push commits you need to pay after your allotted trial.
I have no problem with you wanting to have a “try before you buy” app, but it’s not immediately obvious that you need to pay in order to get the ultimate functionality of pushing your changes. It’s a good job I had the option to trial for 10 more days otherwise I would have wasted quite a bit of time with my commits. That’s the reason why it’s 2 stars.

Phenomenal app

As a developer, Working Copy is indispensable on iOS and iPadOS. I love the way that it walks you through things rather than throwing error codes and messages - missing an SSH key? Buggy and expensive

When copying files, they randomly go into a new directory, sometimes says files to be committed when there aren’t any, diff doesn’t show old file names (when renaming a file).
Better off using a laptop and free native IDE’s/ github. too expensive for what is a very basic tool.

It’s crapware

It’s one of those programs that’s free to edit your files, but has a pro feature “save files” that exploits the loss aversion fallacy. Even though I may have considered purchasing a program that charged the full price upfront, I would like the developer to know that such exploits are immoral.
I’m quite sure that you’d not like to be on the receiving end. So here you go.
Edit: the developer’s claim that there are no people that regretted the purchase is highly exaggerated. Look closely, ther are multiple people that requested refunds, on this very page.
As for whether this is fair. An Apple dev account costs money, so it’s natural that you try to monetise your app. I don’t take issue with this not being a free application. I take issue with this advertisement, a shareware or a lite version not being clearly labelled as such.
Why one star? I’m a stupid person, I saw an application, it didn’t say lite, didn’t say trial, didn’t even say it had in app purchases. I clicked on it and the app doesn’t do what I want it to do. I can’t edit a file and commit the changes. It doesn’t do what it advertises. I would give it zero stars if it were possible. It’s worse than non-functional, it wasted SSD space on my iPad, and my valuable time. I guess I should be thankful (to Apple) that you’re not allowed to install viruses.
I’m sorry, but I did into so-called free applications, and I punish developers that have no regard for honesty.

Brilliant app

I have been using an iPad Pro 12.9 (2017 & 2019) to replace my Linux desktop and laptop usage, where I previously used Git via the command line. WorkingCopy has allowed me to keep my existing ways of working, but modernise my approaches, and switch to a more iOS centric GUI approach to working - but without loosing the power and flexibility that Git provides. Highly recommend - is one of the best tools I have bought for use on my iPad, and I have only just started to scratch the surface of what it can do.

Love the ability to clone, update and push changes from repos stored on different platforms from Azure to GitHub. No crashes and easy to use.

Wow just amazing for my data science work

I had not expected to find so feature rich and clean app at the same time which is so intuitive for a technical process like git. Love it, paid for it (a bit steep price but worth it for any meaningful work to be done on iPad). Plays very well with Juno app which I use for Jupyter notebooks. All in all great complete app for what it’s supposed to do.

Perfect App

A great git tool for IOS it has more features that git offers then any other app I’ve seen recently.
It also is linked with github’s Education pack, making it more widely accessible to students.
When getting support via email the response times were always < 20min.
Overall the best git app I’ve seen yet !

Making my iPad truly Pro!

Working Copy makes it trivial for me to work with GitHub from my iPad Pro. Since buying the app a week ago, I’ve used it to do all the work on my personal website on GitHub Pages.
This means creating directories, uploading images, creating new files in MarkDown and more. All using the iPad Pro and Working Copy.

Intuitive and functional

I wish all application user experiences were as intuitive as Working Copy. Features just work, smoothly, and with user feedback. I had an issue with a project that used large files, which was quickly and efficiently fixed. I wish my desktop tools were as good as Working Copy.

Blows me away - exactly what I needed

This is what apps should be like. It makes great use of iOS functionality such as linking in to other apps, file manager etc. And setting up certificates is super-easy. I was up and running in about five minutes with a document repository, able to edit it and push an update, and see that update on another computer straight away. I emailed the developer with an idea for bookmarks, and in less than a day got a suggestion to hold down the ‘go back’ arrow in the top left and get recently used documents, thus making it perfect for my use case. Looking forwards to investigating the heaps of other features it offers.
The kind of app that doesn’t just solve your problem, but gives you ideas.

Opens up possibilities

Working Copy offers a comprehensive set of Git features in a well thought out iOS-native interface. It plays very well with others, and in combination with apps such as iA Writer, Textastic and Pythonista enables powerful workflows — and yes, "real" work — on the supercomputer in your pocket.

Got me started quickly

I didn’t expect that you can get it going faster than on a Mac. Can edit Markdown directly in WorkingCopy. Good app.

Astoundingly comprehensive

Well thought out, covers everything you'd want on the go, including editing! Slick GitHub integration - I imagine other services Are also as slick. Full JavaScript runtime with console included, which might appeal to some. Great stuff!

Perfect git client and more

I don’t have high end git needs, but Working Copy fulfils everything I ask of it. It’s also a great iOS citizen, supporting document provider etc.
Just brilliant! Better than any desktop or mobile git client I’ve ever tried. Worth the 💵

Amazing but...

It does all the things I need. But it really needs notification option. I want to know when someone is making a push.

Brilliant App, A Developers Best Friend

I don’t usually leave reviews but this app is amazing, much better than the other competing apps and works perfectly.
