The is good, nice quality on my alba hifi with detachable speakers but please don’t presume what I would like to listen to. I play some Ween and you think I want to listen to an album of college rock, I don’t even know what that is but it sounds like detritus. Stop spamming me with compilations of nonsense, I pay for this xxxx

Version 2.8.2
I’m reviewing the IOS app, not the TIDAL service (other reviewers appear to confuse the two). It has less functionality than the Windows desktop app. In particular I don’t see a way to access settings. So you can’t disable autoplay, which means when your selection ends the app plays something you didn’t ask for, and perhaps even really would never want. I almost want to go back to Spotify whose IOS app does have this option. A way to get rid of unwanted suggestions would also be an improvement in all forms of the app.

The sound is fantastic! But a number of features need improvement;
- recommendations are too based on what tidal push and not what my music taste is
- you can’t add to playlists without online collection (so frustrating!)
- the credits don’t download with the album (it’s just text!)
- an EQ would be amazing! (With différent profiles for différent listening devices)
- improves navigation of downloads

Love TIDAL the sound quality, surprisingly large catalogue, exclusives and most of all that it’s a Black business!
But it’s been a couple of years now and it’s time to step up. Compatibility with other apps and just versatility in general would make it significantly better, e.g Chromecasting, Nike fitness or a fitness app, Genius, Shazam, etc in addition to better playlists would go a LONG WAY. Bless

I use Tidal through lots of different devices, some of audiophile grade. For portable purposes though I desperately need an equaliser built into the app to compensate for hearing loss in the upper frequencies that good equipment overcomes but portable players and head/earphones can’t. I am sure I can’t be alone.

Happy again .

Take nothing away from the sound quality, by far the best-sounding steaming service out there.
The only issue I’ve had is the need to also have Spotify alongside as Tidal doesn’t seem to have everything in the way of ‘Underground’ or Film scores.
All in all, the layout is perfect and I’ve had people ask what app I’m using once they see the ‘Downloaded’ section. Arranged beautifully. Been using the app for over 2 years now. I love it.

I am quite a discerning audiophile - sorry! I have to say listening to both HiFi and Master quality on Tidal blows the competition away by miles. I was a little sceptical at first - the trial period means good bye Spotify. Love Tidal and would highly recommend. In fact would go as far to say you’re missing out if you don’t give it a go. You won’t be disappointed. MD

Version 2.8.1
Great sound from my iPad and dragonfly, especially from the master quality recordings, which are generally 96k quality
Worth spending the extra for the master quality in my opinion.
Pretty stable product with good user interface, but it’s the sound quality that sets it apart. The master quality set is expanding rapidly, which is good news.
Two improvements I have suggested to the support team are to enable a filter to allow restriction to master quality only, but with the rest of the interface being the same. This should be easily fixable and would be a great plus in my opinion.
Second suggestion is a utility to identify and upgrade your hifi quality downloaded tracks to master quality when they become available.
These suggestions have been submitted to the development team, so let’s see .....
Very happy overall with the product and would highly recommend it if you are after superior sound quality.

Version 2.8.1
I was an early adopter jumping ship from Spotify to Tidal purely for the audio quality, which remains superior. Playing like for like tracks, there’s just more fine detail, and much more space between instruments. Spotify feels physically not just digitally compressed in comparison, especially with large scale classical works or movie soundtracks.
But initially, the app took some perseverance. But gradually over the years, the app’s quality, ease of use and personalisation in particular has significantly improved.
Personalised suggested ‘radio stations’ based on music you have been listening to and ‘you listened to this, so we think you’d like this...’ suggestions on the Home Page.
My remaining gripes relate to the way the genres are categorised. The whole app is still way too rap and hip-hop-centric for a service that’s allegedly supposed to cater for all musical tastes. Frankly I hate hip-hop and rap. I wouldn’t miss it at all if those categories were entirely missing from the Home Page. And no, Jay z, no matter how many times your app tries to ram this crud down my throat, i will never learn to like it. Why do you assume all your listeners will like it? I think that’s arrogant.
Also, IMO, they could really do with separating folk from Americana. From a British listener’s perspective, these are two quite different categories. I would like to be able to view folk without Americana being bundled in with it.
Finally a wish: in the albums I designate as my favourites, I would love to be able to sort them into genres. At present my favourites albums (which run into the several hundreds) are just in one long list. Yes, you can sort them into different orders, but it’s still one jolly long list. So in that state, it’s easy to forget or overlook music that you may have liked to listen to if you were in a particular genre mood, which is often how I listen: ‘ooh I’m in a jazz mood today, what jazz have I got.’ That’s how I organised my CD collection and I’d like to do the same with my virtual collection too.
But for me, despite the above reservations, Tidal remains the sweet spot in terms of overall ease of use, reliability, sound quality and price. I use with Chromecast audio with the ethernet adaptor and optical out into an Anthem MRX710.

Better than Apple Music & Spotify

If you value high quality audio, then this is the app you need - and yes, you can hear the difference.
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that the search engine isn’t great and it can be quite difficult to find the correct version of the track you are after.

Version 2.8.1
Sound quality is good. MQA a dead-end because so few devices have this (closed system) built in - straight forward hi-res would be more useful. Interface within the app (and really, who uses a desktop for this sort of thing?) is terrible. No facility to create playlists by algorithm. No facility to sort by date or alphabetically. And there are mysterious holes in the catalogue. Still, the sound quality is good...

Version 2.8.0
I’m coming to the end of my free trial and not sure whether to continue or not.
3 stars:
Choice of music suits me.
Availability of Master quality recordings... although MQA is not my choice. Having said that it’s noticeably better that Amazon’s Ultra HD, and I haven’t run out of storage space yet. I have 20 albums downloaded, because I’m often without a connection, and the app is only using 11.7 GB Amazon would be using over 45GB crazy but true!
A nice tidy and useable database of artists and albums. No Apple style album splitting or duplication and no “click here to see the full album” shenanigans. The less said about Amazon’s complete cluster F**k of duplicate albums and Ultra HD albums with only one 24 bit track the better. Sorry.
The recommendations here are really good. I’ve found artists I like but had never heard of despite using Apple and Spotify for over 3 years. Apple could never work out what I liked, Spotify was reasonable, Amazon recommendations were nonexistent.
Only 3 stars because:
I’ve never seen the wait cursor so much in a streaming app. I’m on 76mb Full Fibre to the premises but often cannot open certain artists or albums, others open instantly but some are inaccessible for hours.
The app often pauses playback for no reason and crashes at least 10 times a day.
The latter is really frustrating and totally unacceptable for a premium subscription. I put being able to play an album all the way through without crashing above ultimate sound quality! Also the tedious navigation and the apps inability to recover playback position, or even last album played, after a crash exacerbates this.
Sorry but I cannot find anything positive at all to say about the app. I’m a software engineer and know you cannot please everybody but I cannot believe this has been put through any form of user acceptance testing.
For the price being charged this needs to be first rate. The developer, I’m presuming there’s only one, could learn a lot from Apple, Spotify, and Amazon.
Personally I have issues with the following.
I can sort albums by artist, great, but not by artist / album.
Its common practice to ignore a “The” prefix when sorting but not here.
When I add an album the artist is not added to my collection automatically I have to add the artist separately. I cannot imagine why this has been done.
When I click on an artist in my collection I expect to see the albums for that artist in my collection but I see all the albums available online for that artist... but I’m viewing my collection. Amazon have a perfect solution for this, but here I’ll have to suffer the next issue.
I have over 250 albums in my collection after only a few weeks and it’s one extremely long list that is really impractical to scroll, by Christmas I’ll probably be over 500 and this will be unusable. Provide an index down the side to jump to “T” for example to get to all those pesky “The” prefixed albums, or better still group albums by artist, like Apple, like Spotify, like Amazon... well like everyone else does for some reason!
Downloads? Has it started? Has it finished? No idea. If I go to “Downloaded” the full album is there instantly, my broadband is fast enough but not that fast. Really annoying when trying to make sure an album has been downloaded before leaving for work. Sometimes downloads don’t start for quite a while.
The apps just crashed while I’m typing this.
When I go to downloaded I can only seen 2.5 albums because it’s a horizontal line and I have to press “View All” several times a day to see them all WHY!
Playback has just paused while I’m typing this.
Clicks / spluttering on playback start and finish, reminds me of dropping the needle on a 45 in the 80s.
Bluetooth playback always falters 6 seconds in. Won’t play for several minutes sometimes despite only playing downloaded albums.
Gapless playback? Live albums fade in and out between tracks. Is this an MQA issue? Quality goes up but experience goes down.
Cannot manage subscription in app settings, button does not work. Surprised no one tested that it’s pretty important especially when...
Visiting website to continue subscription redirects me back to the app when I try to sign in! This is a common problem not just with Tidal often requiring users to uninstall apps to use the websites again.
Hey am I being unreasonable? While I’d have being paying £19.99 for a streaming service with obvious issues you’ve been spending you’re time adding Waze navigation!
WOW!
