Description

App Store Editor's Choice!
Space Age is a game of cosmic adventure. Set in the retro-futuristic sci-fi world of 1976, it follows a small but determined band of intergalactic explorers who land on a seemingly uninhabited planet, Kepler-16. They soon discover there’s something both strange and familiar about this alien place… And what happens next is a clash of old and new, a battle of past mistakes and future fallout.
“Presented through gorgeous pixel graphics straight out of an adventure game from 20-30 years ago. There's not much else like it out there.”
- Techcrunch

Essentially boring

Moderately charming, but hollow. Almost no gameplay. Not open world, no real puzzles, lead by hand linear activity, nothing clever, and very very short. It looks retro, but it didn't remind me of 90's point and click at all. Perhaps ok as a free to play intro to a more expansive franchise or to keep an 8yo quiet for a couple of hours.

Looks lovely, plays like a dog.

A real shame, this. Initially seemingly packed with oodles of promise and charm, you soon realise that there is almost nothing by way of gameplay here, and even by point and click standards it can be tooth-grindingly obtuse. Disappointing.

Neat

A enjoyable little number with a fun story and a eery atmosphere but the gameplay is very basic providing no difficulty excluding the final boss.

Bring your waking shoes

Cause you'll be walking around a lot and when you're not walking pointlessly you won't be skipping through the cut scenes.
"Game"play is very basic and just not fun. Storyline is okay but I've seen Saturday morning cartoons with more plot

Excellent game!

Excellent game, reminded me of playing all the Lucas Arts point and click games when I was younger. Hope they release updates to add to the story as it was a little too short for my liking.

Emotional

A beautiful, emotional, space age journey. The occasional frustration with controls cannot distract from the wonderful story this game tells. Also - awesome ending! Bravo!

It's not bad

Waited for this to drop in price and bought at 79p.
It's good graphics, style and sound but the game is just so s-l-o-w with limited interaction.
It's not bad but I'm just finding it so frustrating waiting to actually do something. The captions as mentioned by another reviewer are very fast but that is the only saving grace, if I had to wait around any longer I would have stopped playing a while ago.
So is it worth it? Well sort of. It's okay but it's not a classic and you may tire of the pace of it before seeing to much of it which would be a shame because a lot of effort has gone into it.

"Not sure what to do here..." Oh wait, I know!

There is a bit in the game where you don't seem to be able to do anything or move anywhere and the main character muses to himself, "Not sure what to do here..." Me neither. But then I realised: DELETE THE BORING APP!

Patchy game, but great atmosphere

It is hard not to fall in love the with Golden Age scifi feeling evoked by this game’s visuals and its music, but the game itself is lacklustre. Initially it seems like you will get to explore the beautifully presented Kepler-16, but it turns out that you are led by the hand through a number of minimally interactive situations, all controlled with a rather odd system that I can only imagine was taken from a failed RTS prototype. The sequel could be great, either a golden age scifi version of Red Alert, or an action/exploration game set in space. The developers will need to choose however.

Incredibly Boring and Predictable Story

I have no idea why ppl liked this game: the gameplay is extremely repetitive and even if you want to enjoy the story, there is nothing there that you wont have figured out completely before the ending. Not worth the time and money.

Great game

Took me a bit to get into. But when I did there was no stopping me. Shame it's quite short and the first quarter of the games feels slow. I hope Big Bucket expand on the style of game they have here. Very unique, the camera placement, the character selection and the old school adventure game style inventory, just don't expect a novel of an adventure. It's more like a short story, but is played out very well.

Really terrific game but with difficult/awkward control system

This has to be one of the most brilliant and frustrating games I have ever played! A fantastic storyline that had me completely gripped and wanted to see how it unfolded. But some fairly major flaws that spoilt my enjoyment (sadly).
It starts off as a point and click graphic adventure that I used to absolutely LOVE in the 1990s (and still do!). It’s very nice to see their return, along with “16-bit” graphics.
However the control system is clumsy to say the least and almost had me throwing my iPad across the room at several intervals! You cannot direct the characters accurately anywhere which invariably ends up with them getting killed, particularly in the arcade sections. This reminds me of the “Leisure Suit Larry” series where one false move killed you off. I wish they’d used the LucasArts approach where you solve puzzles to move forward and there is more logic to it.
On top of that there are these tiresome arcade sections which require quick-timing and accuracy, which I’m not very good at and made even more difficult by the tricky control system (switching between characters, forgetting to unselect a character, thereby getting them killed or ridiculous circuitous routes that had me tearing my hair out!!).
An excellent story, spoilt by poor control, and arcade sections, which could have easily been avoided. I eventually made it through, but only with a lot of frustration and swearing. The last level is nigh on impossible!
Real great shame as it is worth persevering to see how the story ends and the final end credits are absolutely brilliant. Possibly one of the best end-game sequences I’ve seen to date! Worth persevering IMHO, but only if it doesn’t end up with a broken iPad screen!
Guys, if you make another one of these, can you PLEASE avoid these very frustrating arcade sections and just stick to point & click? Leave the arcade sections in games such as The Incident (which I don’t get anywhere in) and keep the adventure side pure. Thank you!
I will play through this one again, the story is really good and modern games could take heed to what a good story / game is all about…

Great title. Narrative based.

Humorous. Intriguing. Adventurous. Actually this game is so good it could have benefited from higher production values. Hence -1 star. Too bad. Once again it's like in movies. It's all about the writing. The script. No one cares about the number of polygons / cgi without a good story.

Boring as hell

1)I think it is THE most boring portable game I have ever played and nothing happens it's very confusing
2)Has no one noticed the controls? They're terrible like really really terrible and when it's so boring as well it adds to the confusion
3)In the first proper mission (mission two) you find out that when it says head north or southwest it doesn't give you a compass or a map or anything.
These are my problems with this game and I hope other people understand even if they think I'm wrong.

Dull and confusing

I bought this after hearing all the hype about it and I liked the last game by Big Bucket, but I'm sad to say this is rather dull and it's often not clear what you're supposed to do. Most of the gameplay involves trudging around samey looking parts of an alien planet that consists of little but grass and purple trees. The app is also not well optimised for the iPhone 6, with everything so small it's hard to interact with.

More action than you are prepared for

Good dialog, music and design. Has a few frustratingly stressful moments which you fail if you didn't know that you could select more than one character. A bit confusing how to earn stars.

Very, very dull game. Avoid.

I've read the great reviews and thought 'why not give it a shot'. Many reviews compare this game to adventure game classics such as Monkey Island, so yeah, why not.
Truth is, it's not like that at ALL. The merge comparison is an insult to any half-decent adventure game.
The game has maybe 10 things you might call puzzles. Max. The rest is dialogues and some very annoying arcade like games.
And the story. Omg. Forget about it. Lame, lame, lame. Same goes for the juvenile dialogues.
Overall, a very, very dissappointing game.
I seriously wonder if any of the 5 stars reviewers have ever played a point & click before.
Avoid!

Simply great fun, music and style is top notch!

A mix of all the games I loved as a kid, cooked up and served as a delicious iOS masterpiece!
There's elements of Cannon Fodder, Day of The Tentacle, 50's retro space travel and others I can't name (cause I am aged).

Great retro but needs fixes

This is a great game so far, but like other reviews it's missing a few elements such as tutorials on selecting multiple characters at once and other optional control option. Mostly what I find frustrating about the game is that if you miss a 'star' for performing a certain action or task within the mission and want to retry you can't skip the dialogue, which I feel is a little too fast anyway. Some missions have a lot of dialogue and it's very tiresome to go through it all every time.
Great nostalgia for me though. Takes me back to the original monkey islands!

Fantastic

Fantastic writing, and lovely graphics!
I absolutely loved this game! I couldn't wait to find out what happened each chapter.
The text is a little fast and like someone else said, shooting and multi select we're found by accident. However I had a blast from start to finish and even replayed some of the missions for the achievements.

Promising, needs some updates to be great

Interesting little game so far. Definitely needs a tutorial and also needs better control over text speed - I saw one review complaining it goes too fast but for me it goes far too slowly and I'm sat annoyed waiting for the next line so I can play at my own pace.

What am I supposed to do?

The music and atmosphere are great but the game is really frustrating due to some poor design decisions.
The text moves a little too quickly, meaning you'll likely miss some lines of dialogue, but my main complaint is that the game doesn't explain what you can do. I discovered that I could shoot and select multiple characters purely by accident. This leaves me wondering if there's anything else I'm missing. It's missing a tutorial as new actions / abilities become available.

Brilliant return to gaming roots!

Space Age perfectly captures the style, humour and intelligence of the best of games from 25 years ago. It is a visual and audio delight, and the storyline-driven gameplay is unexpectedly and wonderfully addictive. I am hooked! I'd write more but I have to go retry the latest level...
