Description

Heard a bird and want to know what it is? Just tap the red button to make a recording and ChirpOMatic will do the rest. The app will check your recording against a library of birds from all European countries and provide you with a match, along with a photo of the bird, and a clear cut description of the sound. If you don't have your phone with you, you can use your Apple Watch to record sounds for identification later.
Your recordings are stored along with the date, time and location. They can be shared using AirDrop, WhatsApp, Messages, or Email.
Whether you are completely new to birding or a committed birdwatcher, you will find ChirpOMatic useful.
Why is ChirpOMatic the best app for you?
• No subscription and no need to register. This highly accurate app is yours for little more than the cost of a high-street coffee.
• We respect your privacy. We do not collect recordings, or any of your personal data, from the app.
• Frequently updated, so you can be sure that the app will always run on the latest operating system.
• First-class customer support. We reply to emails within 48 hours.
Why is ChirpOMatic the best birdsong app for birds?
• Recordings of bird songs disturb nesting birds, distracting them from the essential tasks of defending their territory and feeding their young. ChirpOMatic is the only bird sound app that is safe to use anywhere, at any time, because it's the only app with 'Bird-safe Mode'. When this is switched on, you have to hold the phone to your ear as though making a phone call in order to hear the sounds. This ensures that birds are not disturbed.
• ChirpOMatic is the only bird app that changes to ‘dark mode’ at night. This prevents light from a bright screen disturbing birds.
"Top of the pile of bird song recognition apps" - Bird Watching magazine
The only birdsong app that can safely be used on nature reserves!

Version 3.4.4
Worked fine until the winter. As I hadn’t used the app for a while it disappeared into the cloud. Upon reinstalling it simply didn’t work - eventually I realised that the “recordings” were silent. The permissions had changed so there was no permission for the microphone, but the app never suggested that. Surely microphone access should be flagged? It went through the motions of “recording” and “checking”, and the troubleshooting just said I was holding the phone wrong or to switch to the bottom Mike.

It’s really enjoyed using this app, walking round an arboretum. It really increased our awareness of the variety of birds that were present and in doing so added to our enjoyment of the place. Look forward to using it many more times.

I’m sorry to say that in my experience this app is unreliable and comes out with rubbish. For instance, I used it to try and differentiate between a dunlin and a sandpiper, and it told me I was listening to an eagle owl!!! That’s just one example - I’ve listened to warblers and it’s given me one which is totally alien to the area I’m in … I could go on, but I have no time to waste on either the review or the app

The ChirpOMatic App is quite simply the best app I have, in any field. The service it provides is seriously good. From a knowledge base of zero, I am now able to identify and recognise a large number of birds by ear alone. All hail the group of spirits who conceived the idea firstly and went to to create the app itself. “Tick VG” is nowhere near good enough a compliment to pay them.

Like most people, I love sitting in the garden on a sunny day. Despite being a half decent bird watcher, I have never made the effort to learn each bird’s song.
When I’m sitting in the garden I very often can’t locate the bird singing. This app enables me to do identify what bird is singing.I find the app extremely useful, and easy to use. 10/10 from me.

Version 3.4.0
To my shame, I do not know too much about our native birds in the UK. But with this app I am beginning to learn more, and it is very enjoyable to do so. I hear a bird singing in my garden , on a walk, or wherever. And out comes my phone, tap on the app, tap on ‘record’ , wait a few seconds….. then, by way of identifying the bird, you are either (a) given the name of a single bird to consider as the actual provider of the sound you have heard and you can select yes or no (you do this by playing the app’s own recording of the suggested bird’s sound, then agreeing or disagreeing) OR (b) when the quality of your recording is less than perfect (background noise etc), you may be given a shortlist of candidates, and by the above process you may be able to whittle it down to one bird. Once you have identified the bird, the app provides a bit more information about the chirpy chappie. And you have the satisfactory feeling of knowing a little bit more about the natural environment you live in. And your recording gets added to your ‘library’.

Great app

Have found that after recording the app sometimes (actually quite often) seems to get stuck at the ‘waiting for results’ step. Useful if there was a way of cancelling if this happens as the only way I’ve found of getting round this is deleting and reinstalling app.

I am so disappointed. Once you pay your £3.99 and download, you discover that the list of birds is minuscule and doesn’t even come close to achieving the diversity of species in Western Europe. This is basically completely useless to me, and if you have any sort of bird knowledge and are looking for a app to build that up, do not choose ChirpOMatic.

I have been hearing a bird at night and had not a clue what it was. Downloaded this app and in a few minutes I knew. Turned out to be a young tawny owl.
This along with the RSPB are without doubt the best apps I’ve ever had.
Considering the recording was made with a fair old breeze and about 80 metres away from the bird I am amazed.

So impressed!

Thank you so much for providing this incredible app.
Clearly it cannot produce 100% accurate results, but in my experience of using it over around 6 months, providing you give the app a fighting chance by trying to record the song in isolation (of course this is often tricky to do!) and without extraneous noises, I’m amazed at how frequently it gets the right results. Such fantastic technology always at hand! What a thrill to identify one of the less common birds! I could go on!

Pretty good but...

 –
Spacepod21
 –
2020-05-26
...what it really needs is a ‘search me guv’ response rather than always coming up with something. There really isn’t much commonality between the song of the skylark and the collared dove. Wind made the recording less clear, I get that. So don’t guess !

No Bird Sounds

Worked fine for the month I have had the app. Now when I analyse a bird song, the app no longer shows a list of potential birds for you play back the sound to identify which bird. I use an iPhone 6 so not sure if it has anything to do with this. Please look into this as this was something I enjoyed doing while out on my daily dog walks.

Just bought the app and immediately whistled a bird song i had been hearing outside - a tuneful 5-note song. I whistled it well 🙂 The app made a terrible set of suggestions (pigeons and woodpeckers) 😕 When i looked inside the app i can see it has a very limited database of birds so pretty disappointing...

Great concept that I love, but.....

The but is all about being able to record bird song without it auto analysing when out in the countryside. A setting that just permits sequels of short recordings which then can be analysed when you are back on 4G or WiFi would let me give it 4 stars. And save time. Five stars would come from wider birds and their songs already being resident within the app. Sparrow Hawk? Red Kite? Etc etc. Developers do your stuff, after all, I paid for this.

Bird safe not working

On first download, couldn’t hear any of the sounds in the song library. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app and can now hear the library sounds, but turning on bird safe mode doesn’t work - no sound can be heard when holding phone up to your ear and when turning bird safe mode off again, there is still no sound. I have to quit and go back in to hear library sounds again. What am I doing wrong? Will keep persevering, but a few too many glitches have made it more frustrating than fun so far.

Unless I’m mistaken you can’t actually upload birdsong - which can be a nuisance when the app is busy loading. I did not feel the selection made by the app was accurate when I did get the recording. Good idea idea but looking forward tp further improvements.

Try recording twice. Results are highly variable.

 –

2019-05-29
1) I repeat tested on a single bird. It gave different results each time I repeated the recording. The recording quality is fine.
2) No indication of certainty is given for each bird species identified. This needs to be added. For example, I recorded by friend talking. The app suggests she is either a cuckoo, robin or a starling.

Usefull but confused by background sounds

 –
Journeyman007
 –
2019-05-21
Probably impossible to get this app perfect because it is rare to get a recording without either other bird sounds or background road traffic which cause spurious results. However I have found it a useful guide and it is better when you get home and use online analysis. Also you have evidence a species was present at a certain area on a recorded date. I got it to help identify warblers and although It hasn’t got the result correct in first place very often if you take several records and compare with the sample recordings you get the correct identification. At present I do not trust it without a good sighting to verify. I expect to get more proficient with practice and I’ve only made around 30 recordings so far and expect to be more confident with increased use.

At last my frustrations answered

I’m hopeless with birdsong, so was delighted when I found this app. Works quite well for me but I don’t find the playback features and the layout particularly user friendly. More at hand explanation needed. Also playback seems a bit random. Not always easy to hear, but then that’s the great outdoors!
However very pleased to have the app and our walks are so much more fun!

I use the app to get to know more about strange birdsong and have had it some time. I like the idea very much, and it's useful to have the A-Z index for other occasions. The pictures too are informative. Two qualifications: it seems to take a long time to load initially. The birds don't always stay around before the search function kicks in, so I miss some birdsong. Also, the index is a bit off - why 'House Sparrow' when 'Sparrow (House)' would be much more user-friendly? And I still find the symbols (top RHS) a little confusing. That said, I would recommend it.

Works great

I said to my hubby I wish there was a Shazam for birds. Right enough there was. I know it’s more difficult app to make so don’t mind paying £3.99. I live in the county so birds a plenty all chirping at the same time. Your app pretty much nailed it in a kind of order of who was the loudest. Well done. I’m sure there’s lots to add especially the birds that have unique songs/calls like a blackbird or birds that mimic but I was presently surprised.

I have tried several times to record now when hearing both Chiffchaffs and Ravens but it hardly picks up the sounds even though I hear them loud and clear and there’s no wind or other background noise. I also know my mic works since I make regular phone calls.

Used through an iphone6 and given it several attempts to get it right. Been careful about back ground noise and wind over the mic. During my trials pheasants and buzzards have been easily the loudest birds but were never picked up. Singing blackbirds have also been present and not identified. Only correct example I have found was a robin. Today I was no more than a couple of metres from a pair of little brown jobbies I didn’t recognise. They were both singing away loudly and continuously. App said siskins! I know siskins, we have them on our feeders. Siskins they were NOT! Every recording I have done has identified ‘Collared Dove’. I have yet to hear or see such a dove at the time of recording.
From my experience of this app I can only conclude that it doesn’t work and not worth buying and installing.

Excellent app

This is a really excellent app. I recorded a bird call which it couldn’t immediately identify. It gave me the option to refer the sound to the developers. Within two days i got an email identifying the bird and confirming it would be added to the database.
Excellent support and a great easy to use app.

Really good!

I get a lot of birds in my garden and apart from the ‘obvious’ ones I have always found it hard to identify birdsong. This app is usually spot on - just had a couple of blips when the analysis has come up with a blatantly wrong bird. Great value

Rubbish!

I pointed my telephone at a loud song thrush. Very little ambient sound. This app said it was a wood pigeon! It has never got the birdsong correct. I’ve kept up with the updates and reinstalled it several times, even bought a new phone. So, today I was in a marsh listening to a reed warbler a few feet away - a robin said the app! I’ve now deleted it. Waste of money.

Great app for bird lovers

It identifies correctly as long as you can get a good clear recording within the 12 second timescale. Admittedly it can be a bit hit and miss as you can’t get birds to sing on cue, but with a little patience it pays off. Great app which I return to again and again.
