CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS WILL BE ADAPTED FOR A BBC THREE DRAMA, PREMIERING IN MAY 2022!
***SALLY ROONEY'S NEW NOVEL, BEAUTIFUL WORLD, WHERE ARE YOU, IS OUT NOW***
'This book. This book. I read it in one day. I hear I'm not alone.'
- Sarah Jessica Parker (Instagram)
'Fascinating, ferocious and shrewd.' - Lisa McInerney, author of The Glorious Heresies
'I really like Conversations with Friends. I like the tone [Rooney] takes when she's writing. I think it's like being inside someone's mind.' - Taylor Swift
Frances is twenty-one years old, cool-headed and observant. A student in Dublin and an aspiring writer, at night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend. When they are interviewed and then befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre. But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, the sharply witty and emotion-averse Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time.

This book is very impressive for such a your writer. It feels honest and the prose is so simple. At the same time there are just enough passages to show us that the writer made the choice to write simply, not that she couldn’t write differently. Strongly recommend as both an entertaining story and good inspiration for great prose.

Incredible story line, honest characters and taught me a lot about myself. Couldn’t recommend more and was just as incredible as Normal People!

Nice thoughts and language
Less profound as compared w “Normal People”

Masterpiece. Definitely not ‘surface level’ fiction.

This book is incredible. It doesn’t move quickly in terms of ‘events’ but that is for a very real reason. It tells the story from the undercurrent. The deep, raw emotion rather than a string of fantastical life events. Don’t expect the story to be glossed over and fast paced, it’s an absolute literary masterpiece if you can understand the depth and integrity Rooney writes about the characters. The situations the characters face are very real, very relevant and told from the perspective of a deeply troubled internal monologue.
Some of the key themes approached include:
- the main character projecting her capability. proving she has control of her situation (in relation to ‘fitting’ the generalised view of a young woman + her academic, social and home life, an uncomfortable dance trying to fit in multiple versions of themself to please different sets of people)
- The book illustrates the dynamic between food and self worth & relationships and self worth + the absolutely critical balance
- deals with a difference in socioeconomic class; IE, wealthy people overlooking privilege. not literally in money terms but the benefits of being born in a ‘higher’ class equating to being ‘up a rank’ /// the playing field isn’t level // characters are at the same place in life but their access routes and daily struggles differ vastly)
- Calls out normalised negative behaviour in everyday society
This is not surface level stuff. It’s an absolute masterpiece.

Enjoyed this book and read it quickly, just felt the story was a little slow paced, and often, not very realistic.

Loved ‘normal people’ but didn’t love this book. Felt like the story never went anywhere which was a shame.

Expected this book to be better. Strong characters. The story just didn’t go anywhere. I kept thinking, hurry up and get to the point. It never did.

Just a great read, well written from start to finish. Several great characters, all of whom are deeply flawed, but who draw you in. I loved how the story unfolded slowly and it felt almost like it meandered along, but it really didn’t.

Resolve..?

I don’t know how I feel about this book. On one hand, it was very interestingly written, and sometimes the descriptions were a pleasure to read. However, I just feel that the story was a bit lacklustre, and that the ending had no sort of resolve? Maybe that’s just me.

A consistent piece of work, with well built characters and a real/strong enough plot to be enjoyable for whoever enjoys reading.
Far from epic, but a very good book.
