Devastated, Harriet can no longer bear to see Charlotte. No one could expect her to trust her friend again.
Only now she needs to. Because two weeks later Harriet and Charlotte are both being questioned separately by the police. And secrets are about to surface.

This could have been one of the better books relying on the missing child theme. It was overall very readable with a good storyline but I felt the writer threw too many writing gimmicks at it.
Parts are written in the third person while other parts are written in the first person from the points of view of the two main characters. Charlotte’s thoughts did add to the story but, for reasons outlined by other reviewers, I felt Harriet’s were too ambiguous at the start and unhelpful.
The story jumps about in time too much. I’m not sure how necessary this was, or useful to the story telling, but it was on occasions rather confusing, for me at least.
Mainly because of the jumping about in time, some of the story is in the present tense which I personally find very jarring to read. Awareness of it in this book distracted me from the story, interrupting the flow and tension.
I’m left feeling that Heidi Perks is a good writer (I gave 4*) who, without the writing gimmicks, could be an excellent one. They were too distracting for me in this book and prevented the story from being tighter knit.

Excellent, unexpected, and heartbreakingly real

If you want to wait for around 200 pages for anything to happen....after the child goes missing ....then go ahead. Read it. Reading book was like watching paint dry. It’s just desperately poor.

I devoured this book in a day, I just could not put it down!
Full of twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. Just when I’d think I had figured out the plot, a curveball would be thrown in and suddenly I’d find myself in a whole new direction.
A thriller that is full of heart and brilliantly written...I would definitely recommend this book.

At times the story was gripping but mostly it was slow moving. I skim read the last two chapters just to find out what happened at the end as I’d lost patience by then!

Unputdownable!!!

The best book I’ve read in ages, I’ve not been able to put it down. Started it yesterday, and finished it less than 24hrs later, no housework done today, riveting story, I got embroiled in Harriet’s character, could never do what she did , but totally got her reasons for doing it. Shame she couldn’t have confided in Charlotte though, save her all that anguish. Brilliantly written.

What a page turner this turned out to be. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and finished it in one day Really enjoyed how the story evolved and the characters in the book . Would have liked there to have been more about Harriet and Brian’s relationship and is a pity the author only touched on this fleetingly Nevertheless still an excellent read and definitely recommend you read this

If you want an unpredictable story that put you on the edge of your seat, unable to stop reading despite the fire alarm going off because dinner is burnt then I highly recommend this book.
I love to read and escape reality, it would normally take me months to finish a book though because I’d put it down, forget about it for awhile and pick it up again. But this book I couldn’t stop reading! I bought this to read while I was waiting for my appointment at the hospital and I was so into the book I nearly missed my appointment because I completely zoned out and didn’t hear the nurse call my name!
As soon as I got home I was back reading and I was reading whenever and wherever I could. I want more, I need more of these books from Heidi Perks she is truly an amazing writer. BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!

This was totally gripping and devoured in one sitting, possibly because I related to both Harriet and Charlotte so very strongly.
My own toddler disappeared from my side once in a street market and the sense of panic was overwhelming until I saw her looking scared and being comforted just two stalls away.
And I was once asked coldly by a friend if I’d been the person who had betrayed a confidence. It wasn’t me, but the false accusation stung and the original suspicion affected our friendship, which quietly fell apart.
Both events took place many years ago. Those same feelings of panic, guilt, desperation, secrets, lies, betrayal and anger are the emotional forces that drive this most excellent debut novel. The characters created by Heidi Perks are very real. They spoke out loud to me on each page and I believed every word.

Great read, highly recommended!
