Description

No one is born a leader. But through sheer determination and by confronting life’s challenges, Ant Middleton has come to know the meaning of true leadership. In First Man In, he shares the core lessons he’s learned over the course of his fascinating, exhilarating life.
Special forces training is no walk in the park. The rules are strict and they make sure you learn the hard way, pushing you beyond the limits of what is physically possible. There is no mercy. Even when you are bleeding and broken, to admit defeat is failure.
To survive the gruelling selection process to become a member of the elite you need toughness, aggression, meticulous attention to detail and unrelenting self-discipline, all traits that make for the best leaders.
After 13 years service in the military, with 4 years as a Special Boat Service (SBS) sniper, Ant Middleton is the epitome of what it takes to excel. He served in the SBS, the naval wing of the special forces, the Royal Marines and 9 Parachute Squadron Royal, achieving what is known as the ‘Holy Trinity’ of the UK’s Elite Forces. As a point man in the SBS, Ant was always the first man through the door, the first man into the dark, and the first man in harm’s way.
In this fascinating, exhilarating and revealing book, Ant speaks about the highs and gut-wrenching lows of his life – from the thrill of passing Special Forces Selection to dealing with the early death of his father and ending up in prison on leaving the military – and draws valuable lessons that we can all use in our daily lives.

One of the most inspiring books I’ve read in a long time. This book is brutally honest and forces you to reflect on yourself, both weaknesses and positives, to improve yourself and your own leadership skills in real life. The experiences relayed in this book reflect many hard times and evoke how even when times are tough, positivity and dedication can overcome all. Would definitely recommend!

I’m one of these people who struggles to sit still long enough to actually get drawn in by a book, but Ant, you managed it!!! Every free minute I had, I found myself wanting to read more, and more. This is a must read for anyone with even a little adventure in their soul...

Ant Middleton manages to weave his experiences both in and outside the Armed Forces with teachings on leadership, inner demons and the power of positivity. A compelling read for anyone that either wants to be a leader or never thought they could be one.

Before reading the book I had a totally different idea of who I thought Ant was, he has certainly moulded his own life and come through adversity. Having said that I didn’t feel a strong connection after reading through his story, all of his examples and snippets of war stories left much to be desired and mostly centred around him pulling the strings as a leader from afar. He joined and passed out as a royal marine commando and mentioned one story that didn’t really pack a punch. Love watching him in action on the TV but I really wish he would have put more into a book which costs more than it delivered. I have like to put a book down feeling satisfied.... this left me disappointed

I usually start books and either don’t finish them or take forever. This book had me from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to finish reading it. It is an honest account of his experiences and the leadership lessons he learnt along the way. It helped me make sense of some things I had observed in my own life but could not make sense of. I highly recommended read for anyone.

I read this book waiting for an angiogram in hospital, not only had I arrived in an ambulance, I have Norovirus, a chest infection and cardiovascular issues.
After reading this story of Ant’s life so far, I realised I only have a scratch and stop thinking in a negative way, so thanks Ant thanks to you I will soon be back fighting fit and positive about the future.

A decent read...

I really enjoyed this book. Ant tells and has many many great stories to share and sooo interesting.
I could relate to a lot of what he had to say having served 6 years in Intelligence. I served from 80 - 86. Went to a “disco” at Pirbright whilst I was in basic training, heard many tales of Breacon etc. When I left I ended up in Essex and know the Anchor in Danbury. I enjoy watching the various tv programmes he’s been in and look forward to many more, well done Ant and especially well done with what you said about your lady wife. A gent.
Buy the book!!

A must read book.

Excellent account on one persons life and it’s lessons. Positive thinking, Honesty, integrity, self belief and sharing experiences. Above all, gritty determination leading to a point of huge achievement in becoming a far stronger and better person. Respect.

A pretty decent read but it's really more of a self help/life lesson book than any kind of action/SAS thriller.
Ant is very likeable and I'd love to hear more from the operational side of things.

Having watched the odd episode of SAS I thinking this might be another Andy McNab type journal, but I was pleasantly surprised to see this book had real depth and feeling about all that Anthony has experienced. Don’t get me wrong I do like reading some of the modern war books, but this has a lot more to give. Good luck with the future and hope we get to see a follow up book sometime and see you on TV a bit more. Cheers Tim

A bit disappointing to be honest. Interesting life story and obviously a very capable, driven soldier/marine but had to start to skip through the lessons learned/summaries between chapters. There are only so many metaphors a man can dish out before becoming boring and seemingly self righteous (especially the final chapter). Not really a biographical book if that’s what you’re after. More of a metaphor encyclopaedia.

A strong, forceful and honest account of Ant’s life and challenges grips you into questioning the way you lead in your own life. He’s truly an inspirational character, that is honest about his flaws throughout his life. I was waiting impatiently each night to open this book and start reading and I couldn’t let go of it. He doesn’t add any ‘maximisers’ in his writing, no exaggeration, just blunt, respectful truth, which lead him to being the person he is today. I am truly impressed with this book and the life-lessons it has taught me and I foresee myself returning to this book another time for now.

Ant Middleton writes well with what appears to be genuine brutal honesty. His positivity and honesty shine through and make you realise:
a) everyone is more physically capable than they think.
b) a weak mental attitude ultimately is self destructive. If you life depends on something you DONT lie down
c) giving selfless support to others in the right way bolsters your own pathway.
d) no man is an island.
Well done Ant, an inspirational read.

Inspiring and motivational. Brutally honest accounts of life experiences . I cannot rate this book highly enough and recommend it to anyone who wonders what the experiences of a man whose gone to hell and back and come out the other side shining ,may entail. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope you do too...

I could hardly finish it, not an indicator of my ability to “get the job done” merely how boring this book was.
The standard childhood beginning dispersed with the odd fragment of Army life. While I’m sure this book was not intended to follow the SAS/SBS action “pull up a sandbag” kind of book, it could go some way to keep me interested.
